"But, Mike, I don't think that they'll let you join the Brownies," my
Mom said with a look of dismay on her face. "I'm sure that the Brownies
are only for little girls and you're not a little girl."
"But why can't I be a Brownie?"
"Well, because it's part of the Girl Scouts and in order to join the
Girl Scouts, you have to be a girl. In any case you should join the Cub
Scouts, it's part of the Boy Scouts," she explained.
"But Mom, there's no Cub Scout Pack near here and besides my friends,
Diane and Tammy, go to the Brownie meetings and I want to too. Maybe I
can just go to the meetings without actually becoming a member. Would
that be alright?"
"Well," said Mom, "I suppose if it's OK with Mrs. Simmons, the Brownie
leader, then it's OK with me, but I wouldn't think that a six year
old boy would want to be a Brownie."
"Well I do want to be a Brownie because they do all sorts of neat
things and I want to do them too, with my friends! Could you please
call Mrs. Simmons and ask? Please, please?"
Mom agreed to call and later that night spoke with Mary Simmons, the
Brownie leader. Mrs. Simmons said that it was a little irregular, but
seeing as my best friends were part of the Brownie Troop and there
wasn't any local Cub Scout Pack, she didn't see any harm in letting me
attend the meetings. So that settled it and on the next Tuesday
afternoon, right after school was out, I attended my first Brownie
meeting along with Tammy, Diane and five other six year old girls from
our neighborhood.
The meeting was held at Mrs. Simmons' house and was so much fun. The
girls and Mrs. Simmons treated me just like a regular member. All the
girls wore their cute Brownie uniforms that consisted of a cute little
light brown dress that came to just above their knees. They had also
worn their uniforms to school that day so they wouldn't have to go home
to change before the meeting.
On the bodice of the dress was the Brownie insignia and several of the
girls wore the little Brownie beanie. I didn't have a uniform, of
course, because as a boy, I wore a white dress shirt and blue cotton
slacks, just like I wore to school most days.
The first thing we did at the meeting was to recite the Pledge of
Allegiance to the Flag. We had to stand up straight and put our hands
over our hearts. We also recited the Girl Scout Promise. I had to
mumble through it as I hadn't heard it before. I did, however, make a
mental note to memorize it before the next meeting so I could be a real
Brownie.
After the opening exercises we began work on a new project that would
help toward achieving the Bluebird award. What we had to do was make a
bead necklace. Mrs. Simmons had the materials necessary and it only
took a few minutes to learn how to make them. When I finished I thought
my necklace was one of the prettiest and I put it around my neck just
like the other girls. After that all of us put on aprons to protect our
clothes and learned how to make sugar cookies and even decorated them
with icing and then wrapped them up in pretty packages to give to our
Mommies.
Wearing an apron was really neat 'cause it almost looked like a dress
from the front and it tied in the back in a pretty bow. It was all so
much fun, but oh was I jealous of all the girls. I just couldn't
understand why I couldn't wear the same uniform as the other Brownies.
It just isn't fair that boys can't wear the same things as their
friends just because their friends happen to be girls, I thought.
Heck, girls can wear any darn clothes they want and nobody says 'Boo'
to them, but if I was to tell my Mom that I wanted a Brownie uniform
just like Diane and Tammy, I'm sure she'll say, 'No! Boys can't wear
girl's clothes. I don't care if girls can wear pants and boy's shirts
and anything else they want to wear, it just doesn't work the other way
around.'
After the meeting Tammy, Diane and I walked home together carrying our
knapsacks that held our books and the cookies for our Mommies. I was
feeling sad because I couldn't be a real Brownie. How I was feeling
inside must have been evident to Tammy and Diane even though I tried
not to show it.
"What's the matter, Mike? Didn't you have fun? Didn't you like being a
Brownie?" Tammy asked.
"Oh yeah, I had a great time and I can't wait until next week's
meeting," I answered looking down at my feet with a dejected
expression, "but I wish..."
Diane, sensing there was something wrong asked, "What's the matter,
Mike, if you had a good time at the meeting, why are you looking so
glum?"
"Aw, it's nothing really, at least nothing that anything can be done
about," I replied as I wondered, 'How can I tell them that I'd like to
be able to be a real Brownie and be able to attend the meeting wearing
a Brownie uniform'.
"C'mon Mike, I thought you and me and Tammy were best of friends,"
urged Diane. I nodded in agreement that we were best friends. "Well
best friends don't have any secrets from each other, so if you're going
to be our best friend, you have to tell us what's wrong."
My tummy felt queasy. What if I told them that I wanted to wear a dress
and they laughed at me, or even worse what if they got mad at me and I
couldn't go to any more Brownie meetings, or maybe they wouldn't let me
be their friend any more.
"Promise you won't laugh at me and promise that no matter what I tell
you that we will still be best friends and that you won't tell anybody
else what I tell you," I implored with a quiver in my voice.
"Sure, we both promise; you can trust us to keep a secret," said Tammy,
"Remember when you accidentally put that big scratch in my Daddy's
car, I didn't tell on you, did I?"
"And when I told you that I had a crush on Billy Mason, you didn't
laugh at me even though you think Billy's a big dodo. So we promise
that no matter what you tell us, we'll always be best friends."
Taking a big breath, I told them, "Well I did really like being a
Brownie today. It was really neat and lots of fun, but there's one
thing that would have made it even better than it was," I paused,
thinking maybe I shouldn't tell them and but then I plunged ahead, "but
what I'd really like to do is to have a chance to really be a Brownie
and wear a Brownie uniform just like you two. It's so cute, but it's a
dress and my Mom says that boys can't wear girl's clothes. I just can't
understand why I can't dress like a girl if I
want to; it's just so unfair," and I started to sob. "Oh come on, Mike, don't cry, please don't be so unhappy," the girls said as they tried to comfort me. "We're best friends and we'll always be best friends," said Tammy, "but I don't understand why you want to wear a Brownie uniform. It's a nice uniform, but why would a boy want to wear a dress?" Blowing my nose into the Kleenex that Diane gave me and drying my eyes on my sleeve, I hesitantly told them the rest. "Well I just think that being a girl is a lot better than being a boy. Girls can wear whatever they want to wear; dresses, skirts, blouses, pretty shorts, in all kinds of colors, but boys only get to wear pants and shirts. Girls can wear pretty Mary Janes or flats or sandals or even high heels when they grow up, but boys can only wear plain dumb old boy shoes. Your clothes are so much softer and prettier. Tammy and Diane looked at each other quizzically and Tammy said to me, "Listen, why don't you walk ahead and wait for Diane and me on the bench at the bus stop. We'll catch up with you in a minute." "OK, but I hope that you're not mad at me," I replied with a heavy sigh. Diane assured me saying, "Don't worry, Mike, we're not mad, I just need to talk with Tammy for a minute before we discuss this with you." I slowly shuffled up to the bench and sat there wondering if I'd done the right thing in baring my soul to them. Within a couple of minutes the girls
joined me on the bench. "Gosh, Mike, we never realized you had these feelings. Why didn't you tell us this before? If that's what's making you so unhappy, I think we can help you out," Tammy comforted as she smiled at me. "Yeah, if you're going to be our best friend, we want to make sure that you're not unhappy if there's something that we can do to help you," encouraged Diane putting her arm around my shoulder and giving me a squeeze. "I don't think my Mommy or Daddy is home yet," said Diane, "C'mon, we can stop there and see what we can do to help make this the best Brownie day for you. 'Cause we're about the same size, you can try on my uniform." By the time we got to Diane's house my mouth was dry and my palms were wet with anticipation. Diane had said that I could try on her uniform if I really wanted to and, boy, did I want to. Her parents weren't home, so we went up to Diane's room. Tammy and I sat on Diane's bed while she went into the bathroom to take her uniform off. In a few minutes Diane came back wearing a pair of pink shorts and a pretty white top. She was carrying her Brownie uniform. "OK, Mike, here you go. You can go into the bathroom and put it on." I took the uniform from her hand and quickly went down the hallway into the bathroom. Well here goes nothing, I thought, my first chance to wear a dress. My hands trembled as I took off my shirt and pants leaving my underpants on, along with my shoes and socks. My breathing was becoming ragged as I held up the dress trying to decide how to go about putting it on, The dress was one piece with buttons down the front to the waist. "How do I put this on?" I wondered. There were two options, either put the whole dress over my head like a long tee shirt or step into it through the button part and pull it up over my shoulders. I decided to put the whole thing over my head, making a mental note to ask the girls which way was the 'girl' way. My hands trembled as I fumbled with the buttons on the front. I couldn't figure out why I was having trouble until I realized that the buttons were on the opposite side of the opening than on boy's shirts. There was a full length mirror on the bathroom door an in it I saw myself in girl's clothes for the first time. Although with my short hair and clunky sneakers and baggy socks I didn't look much like a girl, I felt fantastic. I turned first one way and then the other to see myself from different angles. I even did a little twirl so that the skirt part of the dress swung around my knees a little. My heart was really thumping hard and I couldn't wait to show Tammy and Diane how I looked. I was a little afraid that they might laugh at me, but then realized that they hadn't laughed at me when I told them my secret, so with a smile on my face I left the bathroom. As I entered the bedroom the girls turned to look at me. My face was beaming. They both smiled at me with understanding in their eyes. Although the only change in me from a couple minutes ago was that I had put on a simple dress, they both seemed to understand that this person standing before them was not just a boy in a dress. This person was another girl; yes, he was physically different from them, but inside him was a kindred spirit, a sister. They both got up and came to me, put their arms around me and gave me a big hug. "Oh, Mike, you look really great in your Brownie uniform," praised Tammy, "but maybe with a little help you can look even more like a girl."
