One who is without hope is bequeathed a power, and a purpose in life. They stand
between The Adversary and mankind, for at the time of the last battle it will be the
deeds of man that count. With the power comes the knowledge of those who have
walked this path before and where death lies waiting for them. For the line must
succeed, the successor must be found and those whose time has passed must die...
"So at this time, you arrive, this is no coincidence," The old man says without
opening his eyes.
"You should know me by now," a voice answers him. "Would I miss this?"
The old man opens his eyes and from his position sitting on the forest floor,
with his back to a tree, looks up at a well dressed, well-groomed man with a black
beard and dark hair, obviously landed gentry.
"You have changed," The old man tells him.
"And you have not" the man answers looking at the ancient form before him.
With the aid of a large staff lying next to him, the ancient figure struggles to
rise. The newcomer watches, faintly amused at his efforts.
"It looks like age has finally caught up with you."
"As will death before this day is out." The old man replies drawing to eye level
with the younger man. He looks at him carefully, scrutinising the younger man, cold
dark eyes regard him back.
"Well, what do you think?"
"Is this the form that The Adversary takes now? Where are fear and the
passion within this form? What does it have to do with your nature?" The old man
demands angrily.
"It is a new world Myrddin, gone are the old ways. Man will find little fear in
things of the world, but in matters of the spirit. Sin is the fear, damnation an
unlimited ocean of possibilities for me."
"You were a fearsome creature in your old form, it was more fitting than this
one."
"Which form would you prefer, the wolf, the serpent or perhaps the wyrm?"
The younger man asks. His smile is not a pleasant thing; it is one to make even the
bravest of men wary.
"Do you mock me?"
"No." the younger man replies gently, "Though you have often been an
irritation to me, you have my respect, that is why I am here at this time. To watch
the passing of the last of his kind."
"You watch people die?"
"Yes, it is a fascination of mine, to see how one such as you faces death is
special though. Rarely have I been disappointed."
"Do you have a name now, to go with this new form?" Myrddin asks.
"A new age needs a new Adversary, I am The Light Bringer, Lucifer."
"But as always one will stand between the world and you." Myrddin states
firmly.
"But not you, your time has passed. Shall we eat?"
"I have the meat if you have the fire," Myrddin indicates three rabbits hung
from a branch.
"Fire is a speciality of mine now." a smiling Lucifer replies.

"So is the battle still the same?" Myrddin asks as they sit before the crackling
flames.
"Nothing has changed, my friend, only the forms. She who you bequeathed
the task to knows nothing of the old ways, Aelfflaed is a Christian,"
"They are invaders, no better than the Saxons or the Vikings." Myrddin replies
with a dismissive wave. "The Latin's have been driven away before."
"Not this time. With that woman Hild and her Convent, the old times have
gone. She turns the kingdoms away from the old gods," Lucifer rotates the rabbits on
the improvised spit as he speaks. "Those of this young religion are so firm in their
faith, with time that will change though."
"Is theirs the true way?" Myrddin asks wistfully, "Have I been wrong all
these years?"
"No way is wrong, you know that. Faith is what gives a man power, faith and
belief. Your master does not concern himself about what name he is known by, it is
enough that he is known. This new way is as flawed as anything before it." Lucifer
pauses and looks up "She is here."
"Come into the open girl, where we can see you" Myrddin shouts into the
rapidly darkening forest. The figure of a young woman in her twenties steps forward,
her clothes are old and worn, though at one time may have been fine garments, these
and her angular jaw, pale skin, long black hair give an impression of nobility,
possibly fallen on hard times.
"I am Morgana." she says arrogantly, "How did you know I was watching?"
"I know all who walk your path," Lucifer replies with amusement "come eat
with us."

They eat in silence, Lucifer observing the actions of the others. Myrddin
seems unconcerned by the woman's presence her unease is obvious.
"Are you the one known as Merlin?" she asks as they finish their meal.
"That is a corruption of my name, by ones who call me heathen. My name is
Myrddin."
"I have sought you for many years, I seek to be the next with the power." She
says urgently.
"Many years?" Myrddin replies with a smile "A mere child speaks of many
years. I have spent longer than you have lived, deciding which path to follow at a
fork in the road."
"The power, I seek the power." She snaps at him.
"I have bequeathed the power to another, she will now stand between mankind
and the dark." he glances at Lucifer who smiles "it is all gone, now all I await
is my death."
"You lie!" she screams, "I am the sister of a great king. I demand you share
the power."
"None believe that lie here, Le Fay." Myrddin shouts, the girl lunges for the
staff lying next to the old man, grabs it and springs to her feet.
"I have it, I have Merlin's staff, I have his power," she shouts with glee.
"There is no power in that child, without power to focus, it is but a lump of
wood." Myrddin laughs at her. The girl closes her eyes grasping the staff tighter
while mumbling a foreign tongue.
Nothing happens except the laughter of the ancient man increases in volume
and seems echo around the forest.
With a scream of rage, the girl opens her eyes and swings the heavy staff at
the still laughing, Myrddin's head. With a sickening crack, the ancient figure is
thrown back. The body lies there; twitching as the life ebbs from it eventually it is
still.
The girl turns to face Lucifer, grasping the staff firmly with both hands, ready,
waiting for his reaction.
Lucifer smiles.
"If it is power you seek you should talk to me. I think we can work out a
mutually beneficial arrangement."
"Who are you?" She demands suspiciously.
"I am the Light Bringer, Lucifer and you my dear have a talent. Come, let us
get to know each other a little better."
