"I just don't get it?" Michelle said as she was watching
women's professional bowling on television.

"I can see why they have different leagues for men and
women in basketball, soccer and sports like that, but why
can't they just have one league for bowling, golf or other

"That's because most people who have those silly
discussions are men and they are ignorant, pig-headed and
not willing to admit that women are as good as, if not
better, than they are on a level playing field." Michelle
said with irritation.
"Michelle, don't get mad. But I am only arguing a proven
fact. Your best athletes, businessmen, lawyers, doctors,
and even for that matter, chefs are all men. I don't know
why it is, but it is." John said in defense.
"What are you talking about? Have you lost your mind? There
are plenty of great lawyers, doctors and businesspeople who
are women. Look at Marion Jones, Madame Curie, Martha
Stewart and Oprah Winfrey. They all excelled in their
fields and are quite successful." Michelle said with a
quickening voice.
"Don't get me wrong. There are a few exceptions to every
rule, but for the most part men are better than women when
it comes to things like these. I don't say it like it's a
good or bad thing, it just is. Men are better at some
things and women are better at others. It's just a fact of
life. I don't make the rules, I just accept them as a fact
of life and live by them."
"Oh, do you, now? And what exactly do us poor, simple women
excel at, master?" Michelle said in a sarcastic tone.
"Michelle there is no need to get upset. I am simply
stating the natural order of things. Men are the achievers
and women are the nurturers. It has been like that ever
since we first climbed out of that primordial soup. In the
course of evolution Nature has deigned that the male of the
species be the leader, achiever and supplier while the
female of the species be the nurturer and caregiver. One is
not any more important than the other, they are just
different." John explained in an almost condescending
voice.
"You really believe that crap? You really believe that a
woman's sole purpose on this earth is to serve the needs of
a man? You think that we only fulfill our purpose when we
take care of your emotional needs?" Michelle said in anger.
"Michelle, you know I love you and care for you, but let's
be realistic. Our country was great when people understood
their proper role in life. Look at what has happened to the
family when women decided to enter the work force. Look
where our society has gone since the natural balance of
Nature has been disrupted."
"We should only be barefoot and pregnant? Is that what you
think? You think that the evil's in our society today are
somehow our fault because we dared to venture outside the
home into a larger world which we have every right to?"
"You must admit that in the 'good ol' days' a couple of
generations ago many of the problems that exist today
didn't exist then?"
"You are right, but instead there was rampant injustice,
prejudice and intolerance! Whole classes of people,
including women, were denied basic rights. The 'good ol'
days' were only good for people like you."
"Michelle, I don't know how this discussion has gotten so
far off course. I was simply saying that I don't believe

this. We have been going out now for a couple of months and

After Michelle left my house I sat there wondering how

At last Michelle was talking with me again. I wasn't crazy
about going out with Karen and Jason, for I wanted to spend

"I am a Master. My ranking is 2135," John said
"That's great," Karen said. "A Master chess player, I am
impressed!"
"Do you play?" John asked Karen.
"I do, but I don't think I am as good as you are."
"Now she's the one being modest," Jason said. "She is
actually quite good. She beats me all the time."
"Oh what's that? Do my ears deceive me? A woman beat a man
at something? How can this be? Is the world coming to an

Michelle said in mock surprise.
"What are you talking about?" Karen asked.
"She is making fun of me, I believe. We were having a
discussion and I simply said that on a whole, men are

said.
"Did he really say that?" Karen inquired.
"That and more," Michelle answered.

"I didn't say we were superior, I just said we were better
at certain tasks."

said.
"Can't we just change the subject and agree to disagree?" I

"Karen why don't you play John in Chess to see who wins?"

"Why is that John? Are you afraid a woman might actually be
better than you?"
"No it's not that," I said.
"Do you think you are too good for her?" Michelle prodded.
"Karen is probably a very good player, but..." I said as I
was interrupted.
"John I am not afraid to play you. I may not be as good,
but I will give it my best try, Bring it on," Karen said.
"Okay, I will play you, but don't say you have not been
warned," I said.
"Let's go get the game Karen," Michelle said.
"John can you really beat her? She's pretty good." Jason
said as the women left the room.
"I don't think it will be much of a problem. She may seem
good to you and others, but there is a real art to the game
that people who aren't Masters can't understand or
appreciate," I said.
"What's all this about men being better than women?" Jason
asked.
"Oh, it's just a silly discussion that Michelle and I were
having about the pre-ordained roles of men and women. I
simply said, and believe, that men are better at most
things than women. It's not a put down, just a statement of
fact."
"I agree," Jason said. "Women are good at what they do, but
they shouldn't think that they can compete with us. Sure,
Karen can beat me at Chess, but you are right. If she plays
a man who has studied the game she won't have a chance."
"That's what I think. I hope this little demonstration will
teach Michelle and Karen a lesson," I said as the women
walked back into the room.

"Write up the contract and I will sign it." Jason said with

Michelle and Karen left the room to draw up the contract
and didn't return for almost an hour during which time

pieces and not setting up position. The game only lasted 32

than the first for I had to concentrate much more this
time. I wasn't as dominating in this game but felt as
though I still had the commanding position until Karen
played B-KB5. I felt my heart drop. I at once realized that
Karen had set up the board which in two more moves would
capture my queen by her moving K-KR7. I knew I was in
trouble but was hoping she had merely stumbled upon this
serendipitously and wasn't aware of her advantage. I was
wrong. She not only captured my queen but was
systematically painting me into a corner. 12 moves later I
heard the inevitable.
"Check Mate!" Karen proudly announced.
Jason and I sat their with our mouths agape this time.
"Great Job Karen! How do our slaves feel now?" Michelle
asked.

humility. We were gracious losers and you should be as
