It was the best day of my life and I was almost ready
to burst from pure happiness. Never before had I even
imagined that I could be so happy, that anything could be
so perfect. Or that I would have the perfect someone to
spend the rest of my life with.
Just a short while earlier, I had married my beloved
Keith, in the most beautiful ceremony that I could have
imagined. It was fairly small as neither of us had any
family, though there were a number of friends. And my best
friend Sharon made a gorgeous bridesmaid.
And at the moment, Keith and I had just started our
honeymoon. I couldn't help giggling as he picked me up and
carried me over the doorframe for our hotel room. The whole
thing was just so romantic.
"Come here beautiful," Keith told me, giving me a
passionate kiss as he put me down. We remained kissing for
another few seconds before finally pulling apart.
"Wow," I exclaimed, "You really took my breath
away..."
"I aim to please," he responded with a broad grin
that spread all the way across his handsome face.
With that, I smiled back, eagerly thinking about how
we would soon be making love. Sure, we had made love plenty
of times before... but not as husband and wife. Then with a
wink, I picked up my toiletry bag and carried it into the
hotel bathroom.
As I put it down and reached for my makeup so that I
could do a touch up, I looked in the mirror and paused. The
woman who stared back was a very attractive 28 year old
with long brown hair. But it hadn't always been that way.
It had been a year and a half since the Great Shift,
though at times it seemed infinitely longer. That was the
day that everything changed around the whole world. The day
that most of the people on the planet randomly shifted over
into other people's bodies. Of course, afterwards things
changed quite a bit. A lot of people struggled to hold onto
their old identities even in their new bodies, while others
tried claiming the identities of the bodies that they now
occupied. And then there were a lot of people like myself
who left the past behind and chose to create completely new
identifies and lives for ourselves.
As I stared at myself, I thought about that day. I'd
barely thought about it at all in a long time. Before that
day, I had been a 14 year old boy. I had been on vacation
with my parents and our airplane had been coming in for a
landing. Then suddenly it hit. I found myself on the
ground... and in the body of an adult woman. And only a
short while later, I discovered that the plane we had been
on crashed on landing. All because of the Great Shift.
Thinking about the Shift was fairly strange after so
long, and a lot of the edge was gone from it. After all, I
wasn't that person anymore and hadn't been since that day.
Of course, nearly everyone had been confused about
what the Shift meant for the world, and their sense of
identity. I like many chose to focus on the now, not the
past. On who I was... not who I had been. Still, suddenly
being turned from a teenage boy into an adult woman had
been very confusing for me at first, especially now that I
was all on my own.
Fortunately, I soon met up with Sharon, who took me
under her wing and taught me all that I needed to know
about being a woman, becoming my best friend and big sister
all in one. She had been a woman from before the Shift, and
though we never talked about it... I was sure that she
strongly suspected that I had been a guy from the first.
But she never said a word about it, and that had been long
past... in another life.
With Sharon's help, I became the woman I am now, in
truth as well as in body. I had a job to support myself and
I had boyfriends. And then I met Keith, who was like me in
that he never talked about his life before the Shift.
Something had clicked from the first and we quickly fell in
love. The day I had met him had been the best day of my
life... until today.
Then I shook my head, not liking to think about the
Shift or the time before it. My hand automatically tried to
reach for something that wasn't there, still having some of
the reflexes of a smoker. I had quit just a month earlier,
but some urges still take awhile to fade. It had been a
habit that I had gained along with my new body, but it was
also one that Keith hadn't really approved of.
With that, I finished brushing my hair and touching
up my makeup, feeling silly for thinking about those things
when I had so much more important things to think about.
Not to mention much more pleasant. It was my wedding night
after all...
"Hello handsome," I purred as I came out and
stretched out for Keith as sexily as I could. It was
obviously having the desired effect as well.
Without a word, I moved into his arms and we started
to undress each other and make love. And as good as it had
been with Keith before, it somehow seemed even better now.
It was probably just my sentimental side, but it certainly
felt like it.
Afterwards, I lay on the bed beside my new husband,
feeling very pleased, not to mention hoping that he'd get
ready for round two... or was that three very soon. I might
be pleased, but I was definitely hungry for more.
Keith just sat up and smiled at me, admiring my body
as he frequently did. But other than the obvious and open
admiration, there was something else in his eyes as there
sometimes was at times like that.
"I love you," Keith told me, making me respond in
kind. Then his expression turned thoughtful and serious.
"You know..." he started slowly, almost uncomfortably, "I
was just thinking that we're married now... but there are
still things that we don't know about each other."
"Oh," I responded, not completely comfortable with
where that conversation was going. The past was the past
and I was perfectly happy living in the present. "Like my
favorite kind of diamond?" I teased him with a smile.
Keith shook his head, "No honey," then he gave me a
kiss, "I know that you like the big ones." Then he added
the phrase I suspected he would, "Like who you were before
the shift. I mean, I don't think that I ever even told you
my original name..."
"What?" I gave a playful gasp of mock shock, "Mr.
Right isn't your real name?" He just laughed at that.
"Well... yes it is," he admitted with a wink, just
before saying, "But I think that maybe we should know at
least something about each other from before... Even if
only a hint. Maybe just our names..."
I rolled my eyes at that, then gave a faint nod when
I saw that he wasn't about to just give up like I had
hoped. "Alright," I sighed in defeat, "But just our old
names."
My handsome new husband nodded at that, then tore off
several sheets of paper from the note pad by the phone,
handing me one of them. However, he paused just before
writing anything, giving me a hesitant look that told me
that he was having second thoughts about this but was
stubborn enough to go ahead. I followed his example a
moment later and wrote my original name on my piece of
paper, feeling strange while doing so since I hadn't
written that name since the Shift.
"Shall we?" I asked as I held out my folded piece of
paper, trading mine for his
I hesitated for just a second before opening the
paper, never having really wanted to know who Keith had
been before. It seemed sort of an invasion. And of course,
I was a little uncomfortable as to how he might react to
the knowledge that I had been a guy before the Shift, even
if my name wouldn't tell anything else about me, even my
old age.
Then feeling silly for my worry, I unfolded the paper
and read the name that Keith had written on it. And to my
shock, it was a name that I recognized. I let out a faint
gasp as I read the name Deanne Clark. It was the very same
name as my original mother's.
Tearing my eyes from the name, I looked at Keith,
seeing from the look on his face that he recognized my old
name as well. We stared at each other for a moment, both
feeling stunned and uncomfortable. Neither of us said a
word. My emotions were confused to say the least, though
there was a bit of relief that the family which I had
thought dead in the Shift was still alive.
But as I stared at the man in front of me, I saw no
sign of the woman who had once been my mother. Instead, I
just saw Keith... the man I loved. The man whom I had just
promised to spend the rest of my life with. I only saw my
husband.
I had long ago decided that life before the Great
Shift didn't matter. That was a whole other life. But it
wasn't my life now. That wasn't me now. I was no longer a
teenage boy named Brian Clark and hadn't been for a very
long time. I was Emily Smith... or Mrs. Emily Newman, which
was my married name. I was a woman and a wife. That was who
I was now. Just as Keith was the man in front of me.
Without a word, I tore the paper in half and tossed
it into the garbage can beside the bed, giving Keith a
steady look. He gave a faint, almost imperceptible nod
before tearing the piece of paper I had given him in half
and throwing it in the garbage as well.
Then a look passed between us, as well as an unspoken
understanding. This had never happened. No names had ever
been read. The past... at least before Shift, was
irrelevant. These were our lives now. This was who we were.
And from the look in Keith's eyes, it was a truth that we
both fully accepted.
"Are you about ready for another go?" I suddenly
purred to Keith, moving forward to give him a kiss.
I was quite happy just to be in the arms of my
handsome new husband, knowing that our life together had
only just begun. At the moment, everything was perfect and
right with the world, and absolutely nothing was going to
ruin the best day of our lives.
