"Sorry, buddy. Well, I feel bad not getting that toaster. But I
think I can hold off till tomorrow."
"Did somebody mention they were looking for a toaster or a tie?"
asked a man's voice from behind Jackie and Greg. They turned and saw
Phoenix, the peddler.
"Yes, sir, I need a tie and she needs a toaster, but this store
closed about 3 hours ago."
"Yeah, they tend to do that around that time. But fortunately for
you, I happen to have the items you're looking for." Greg looked the
man up and down. Phoenix was wearing rags. And he was covered in dirt.
"Pay no attention to the clothes, I have but little. And I sell what I
can so I can go buy booze or whatever. Here, take a look at this tie."
Phoenix produced a black tie from his rags. Not a stain graced
the plain looking tie. There was nothing noticeable at all about it.
But Greg needed one, and this was the best he'd probably do.
"How much?"
Phoenix thought for a moment. "2 bucks."
Greg pulled out his wallet and handed the money to Phoenix and
Phoenix gave Greg the tie. Deal done. Jackie smiled but still saw no
way for the man to give her what she needed.
"Did you say you had something for me too?"
"Oh yes, young lady." Phoenix walked over to a shopping cart that
neither Greg nor Jackie had noticed before. Sitting in it was a
beautiful, clean toaster. It looked to be in perfect condition. "Just
to prove it's not a sham, I'll give you this toaster for the low, low
price of ten bucks."
Jackie reached into her purse and produced a ten dollar bill for
Phoenix. He lifted the toaster into Jackie's arms and with a salute,
marched off into the darkness. Greg turned to Jackie.
"You want some help getting that into your car?" Jackie smiled.
"Yes, thank you. That's very gentlemanly." Greg helped Jackie
place the toaster into Jackie's trunk. They promised to meet up at a
later time. Their date was kept... sorta.

Jackie plugged the toaster into the wall and felt a sense of
relief sweep through her. Megan walked up behind her and put an arm
