Dream Doll
Story by Garath Xion
Editing by Cedric Hasten
"Can we go now?" James asked for the third time since entering the
store.
"Hold your damn horses alright? Geez, we're in a sex shop for crying
out loud. You should be excited at the possibilities. What are you gay
or something?" Ben shot back at him.
James mentally sighed. He hated having to spend time with his cousin
Ben, but he had promised his mom he would. Sure he could just take off
since he didn't live with her anymore and most likely get away with it,
but to him a promise was a promise. However he was very tempted.
"First off, there isn't anything wrong with that, but no I'm not.
Secondly, not EVERY guy has to be into this crap," He replied, hoping
his cousin just found what he was looking for soon. He hated these
stores. They were just one big reminder of what he wasn't going to get.
"Yeah, Yeah, whatever man," Ben mumbled as he looked at a selection of
blow up dolls.
James knew that Ben wouldn't leave until he checked out everything this
place had, so reluctantly, he shut up and just dealt with it.
The two of them were only two years apart in age. Ben was twenty, while
James himself was twenty two. Ben had brown hair and blue eyes. He like
James was Caucasian. Ben was wearing what you'd expect to find on a
punk, (which James thought most fitting), blue jeans, black sneakers
and a black T-shirt with the name of some rock-band. He was the type of
kid you'd see in a gang, though James was sure that Ben wasn't part of
one.
James himself was about two or three inches taller then Ben. He had
brown hair as well, but with brown eyes instead of blue. His hair was
also slightly longer, (about a little over an inch), while Ben had it
to where it was almost nonexistent. James was wearing blue jeans as
well, with white sneakers. His shirt however had the picture of Mega
Man upon it, as he loved that videogame series immensely. He was the
type of guy you might see as the owner of a bakery in some old movie.
Some girls he knew said he was handsome, but they were mostly family
members so he didn't know if he believed them.
James had not wanted to come here, but as stated, his mom had asked him
to accompany Ben as he didn't have any of his friends down here for his
visit. He didn't think Ben should have friends the way Ben was, but he
had reluctantly agreed to come to the mall with him, he was just glad
he didn't have to like it. It had gone okay at first. Places like media
outlets and stores, like Spencer's which He could handle no problem.
Even the sports stores didn't bother him all that much, despite the
fact he HATED sports. However it was this sex shop that had gotten to
him. He was twenty-two and a virgin. A sex shop was NOT something he
wanted to visit. He did wonder why he had never seen it before having
been in this mall countless times. He guessed he just never noticed it
before, as it was near the end he rarely visited. Still there were many
other places he wanted to be right now then a sex store called 'Dream
Doll'
Ben had grown bored with the blow up dolls at this point and had moved
on to the dildo section. Picking one up he showed it to James, the box
as he did so.
"I wonder why women shove these up in there instead of just going for
the real thing?" Ben asked as he practically shoved it into James'
face.
(Probably because they don't think sex with people like you is worth
it,') James thought. Out loud, he replied, "I don't know, why don't we
go ask some random girl if she wants to test it?"
Ben snorted. "Yeah, know what? Fuck you," He said, but he smiled as he
said it.
James grinned himself. At least Ben wasn't all bad, this was about the
only way he could stay sane with him anyway. By making really bad
jokes.
"I'm just going to ask the shop keeper if they got anything good in the
back and then we can go alright?" Ben asked in a chiding manner.
James just shrugged; he couldn't wait to get home so he didn't have to
spend any more time with this guy then he had to. As they neared the
back, an elderly man emerged from a doorway set in the back wall,
covered with bead like strands much like those seen in movies about
fortune-tellers and the like. The man wore a simple gray sweater and
tan work pants. His white hair and blue eyes flashed with gentleness.
To be truthful, James found it strange that a man like this was running
a sex store.
"Yes, may I help you?" The old man asked, his voice sounding like a
friendly neighbor coming over for a chat. Adding to the image of just
how out of place the guy looked.
"Yeah, I'm looking to see if you have anything really special, like
some special new sex doll or something," Ben asked, looking like he
disapproved of the old man's appearance. The old man looked Ben over
for a little while before shaking his head.
"No I'm afraid I don't have anything for you," He said, but Ben didn't
seem to buy it.
"Can you check?" He asked a bit rudely. The old man seemed to anger
slightly which James was certain pleased Ben.
"I assure you sir there is nothing-" The old man began, before
stopping. James noticed that for the first time the man seemed to
notice him standing there. The old man then looked him over for a few
moments before almost smiling.
"Actually now that I think about it, I believe there is one thing," He
said going back into the back.
"Yeah I knew it, you're just senile, probably should freaking retire
and give this place to someone who knows what they are doing," Ben said
as the guy left. If the old man heard however, he didn't reply.
James meanwhile was wondering why the man had changed his mind
suddenly. Did his being here have something to do with it?
When the guy returned he brought with him what appeared to be a female
mannequin, but under closer inspection James realized that the girl
looked almost real. She had no hair and her eyes were closed. She wore
simply a white tank top with a white bra underneath, as he could see
the bra straps. Below she wore a simple pair of blue shorts and
sandals. He was certain she had a matching white pair of panties, but
obviously he couldn't tell.
"What the heck is that?" Ben asked, clearly not impressed.
The old man was openly smiling now and James couldn't help but feel as
if the guy was watching him through the corners of his eyes.
"This sir, is a Dream Doll, it's magical," The old man replied.
This time Ben openly snorted. "Yeah right, what kind of fool do you
take me for?" He asked the man.
James however believed the old man. He didn't know why, but he swore he
sensed... life from this girl.
"I do not take you for any fool, this is a magical doll. She will look
like whatever you want her to. Why don't you try giving her hair if you
don't believe me?" The Old man replied, not a trace of laughter upon
his face.
"Alright so if I imagine her with blond hair, WHOA!" Ben exclaimed.
James had jumped a bit as well when the doll in front of him suddenly
grew blond hair that easily reached just past her shoulders. It was
clear that Ben had immediately bought into the entire story.
"So what else can she do?" He asked, as he looked her over with awe.
"She will become whatever you desire. She will act, look and sound to
you as you specify. You can't change her age however. But if you want
an Asian as a girlfriend, you can. If you want her to be spunky or shy
she will become that. Or if you want something like a Caucasian redhead
to do all your house chores, she will become that." The old man said.
James noticed that the girl looked to be the same age as Ben, so that
probably would faze him.
"Well that sounded kind of racist." James replied.
The old man laughed merrily. "I didn't mean it like that, they were
just examples." He said.
James decided he liked this guy, whoever he was. But he still didn't
get why he owned and ran a sex store.
"How much?" Ben asked, still looking the doll over.
"One Hundred dollars," The man replied.
James stiffened. That was certainty a lot of money, not as much as he
thought, but still a lot. He definitely wouldn't have been able to buy
her. Ben however fished into his wallet and pulled out a hundred dollar
bill and handed it to the guy.
"I'll take it." he said. The old man nodded and took the money, winking
at James in the process.
(What was that for?) James wondered.
"Alright so how do I get her home? Will she obey my commands?" Ben
asked.
The old man nodded. "Say it and she will comply," He answered.
"Okay, open your eyes," Ben told the doll.
The girl opened her eyes, which turned out to be blue, probably Ben's
doing. But that's all she did, she didn't move an inch more, nor look
around or blink. It kinda creeped James out.
"Oh for crying out loud, at least move like a girl would," Ben said.
The girl suddenly shifted her weight so her right hand was placed upon
her hip as her left hand lay at her side. She seemed to shift like a
normal person would if they were just standing around. Her eyes seemed
to look around a bit as she tapped her foot as if waiting for the next
command.
"Okay, now come over here and give me a kiss," Ben said.
The girl immediately smiled and bounded over giving Ben a big kiss on
the lips. She had bounded over just like just like an obedient
girlfriend might. James felt a stab of pity for the girl, even though
he knew she was only a doll. Or was she? It was almost like there was
something with her eyes...
"You need a name," Ben went on.
"I know, Barbie! Your name is Barbie and you talk and sound just like
those teenage cheerleaders do. Got it Barbie?"
"Like, of course!" She replied sounding every bit like the air headed
cheerleader.
James wanted to point out that not all cheerleaders talked or sounded
like that, but he knew it would be upon deaf ears. She seemed almost
human now, except the fact they looked just as lifeless and dull as
those of any doll. However he swore he could see something in her eyes.
"Well our business is done here," Ben said turning to go. "Come
Barbie."
"Yes sir," She said, her voice still the cheerleader's, but absent of
emotion. Just like a doll's would. There was one thing however that
James had thought of however that Ben had not.
"How are you going to get her into Grandma's?" He asked, for that was
where Ben was staying during this visit. "She's not going to let you
just bring some girl in and I doubt she'll let you keep a sex doll
either, even if you can prove that's what she is."
"You're right," Ben said, realizing that himself. He turned to the old
man once more, but the guy was quick to answer Ben's question before he
could even ask it.
"That's the beauty of a Dream Doll!" The guy said. Noticing the
confused looks the two boys were giving him he went on, "If you tell
her to, say, 'appear as air' to all but you or a certain person, the
magic in her will make her do just that."
"Really? Okay Barbie, appear as air to James over there," Ben said
pointing in James' direction. As soon as he did 'Barbie' suddenly
disappeared from James' sight as if the very air around her had
swallowed her up. He couldn't help it, he gasped. At first Ben thought
James was humoring him, but after seeing the general shock upon James'
face he smiled.
"This thing just keeps getting better and better!"
***
James closed and locked his bedroom door, being generally exhausted
after the events of the day. They had left the store soon after Ben had
learned of the 'air' trick. They had spent the next hour going back
into every shop they had visited and a few new ones as Ben showed off
his new 'girlfriend'. Thankfully, James had managed to talk him out of
telling anyone about the truth of her.
(After all,) He remembered saying, (You're the only one who has one
around here.)
Thankfully Ben also allowed James to see Barbie again as he had been
getting creeped out by Ben's clothing moving on it's own due to Barbie
messing with it. He had been almost ready to lose all patience with
Ben's little display when finally he had said he was going home to test
something. James knew very well what Ben wanted to test and once again
he felt a stab of pity for the poor girl. He knew that was silly as she
wasn't really alive, but he just couldn't help it. To be stuck with a
jerk like him.
Sighing, he vowed not to think about it too much. Not that he could do
anything about it now anyway.
Figuring he'd focus on what to do tonight his eyes roamed his room to
land upon his computer. Of course, a little online chatting would do
him well. Turning it on he was soon surfing the web and loading up AIM.
Bling! Almost instantly a chat box popped up. Checking it, James
realized it to be his online friend Cedric, saying hi. He smiled and
typed his greeting back. Cedric had been an online friend of his for a
while now. He was sure that he could trust Cedric with almost anything.
So when Cedric asked what was up, James almost laughed out loud.
"Cedric you'd never believe me if I told you," He typed back.
A few moments later came the response, "Try me."
(Okay,) James thought, (why not?)
"Just don't go calling me crazy," James replied before launching into
the entire story of 'Barbie'.
James told Cedric all he could remember. How he had gotten to be there,
the strange shopkeeper and how the doll worked. When he was done, the
box remained unrealized to. He figured Cedric probably thought he was
lying and was remaining silent on purpose. He didn't like the idea of
his friend being mad at him, but he couldn't force Cedric to believe.
If he thought he was lying then there was nothing he could do about it.
He had been off and on chatting with a few other online friends, while
checking what was new in the message boards for a site called Magical
Sailor Fuku, when a reply came.
"Sorry about that," It read, "My dad wanted me for a second. Well in
regards to your story, I've known you long enough where I don't think
you'd lie about it. So what do you think her purpose is?"
James blinked. Purpose? She was a sex doll. He typed that to Cedric.
"I doubt you believe that, by the sounds of it, you think something
more," Came Cedric's reply not long after.
James thought about that. There was something strange about her,
especially those lifeless eyes. He had to admit, there was something
strange about her. Plus didn't the shopkeeper wink at him? Just what
was going on? This was something you found in an anime, not real life.
"I'm not sure," He replied. "I'm not even sure why this isn't freaking
me out more then it is, I mean it IS a magic doll. In horror movies
those kill people, but I... I just feel that isn't that case here. I
don't understand it myself."
He swore he could almost FEEL the nod in Cedric's reply.
"I wouldn't worry about it too much. Keep an eye on him however."
James thought about that. Good advice. The rest of the night went by
without incident and soon he was off into the land of slumber, ready to
go to work the next day.
***
"Help me..."
James wasn't sure if he had heard these words or they had papered like
text in his mind. But he knew something had made them. Looking around
though, all he could see was smoke.
"Help me... Please..."
There it was again. He swore it was nearby, but he couldn't tell what
direction or even if it was actually being spoken. Frantically he began
to run about trying to fight his way out of the smoke.
"Where are you?" He cried.
He didn't know why, but he just had to help whoever it was who was
calling, but he couldn't find anyone in this smoke and it was getting
hard to breath.
"Buried deep within..." Came the response.
His breathing was getting shallower and shallower, as he struggled to
keep going despite his lack of oxygen, he stumbled falling through an
empty void where the ground had just been.
"Deep in my heart, a voice kept echoing, I knew I'd soon be
wandering..." The radio suddenly barked out, waking James from his
troubling sleep.
Turning the alarm off, James held his head while just sitting upon his
futon.
"What the heck was that all about?" He wondered.
Could it have something to do with the doll his cousin Ben had bought
last night? He didn't have time to contemplate that as he realized he
had to get ready for work. It was Friday, so he got paid today as well.
Gathering his energy he began to prepare.
Work went by quickly and before he knew it he had walked down to his
local check-cashing center to get his check cashed. After that he had
returned home and booted up his copy of Robotech Battlecry for the PS2
to pass the time. As the hours ticked by, James had forgotten all about
Ben and his doll until he answered a knock at the door to find both Ben
and Barbie standing there. Ben looked winded and was breathing slightly
heavy.
"Hey," He said, "Mind if I come in?"
(Hell yes,) James thought, "No, come in."
Ben and Barbie entered the house and were soon in James' room. Luckily
his roommates were out for the weekend, as he didn't want them to know
about Barbie. As he looked at Barbie, he wondered again if she had
anything to do with the dream he had had that morning. But looking at
her eyes, they remained just as lifeless and empty as the previous day.
Was she really only a doll?
"So what can I do for you?" He asked hoping to get rid of Ben as soon
as possible.
He wished he could spend more time with Barbie however, to see if he
could answer some of his riddles, but he didn't see how he could do so.
As if by fate Ben gave his response.
"I want you to borrow Barbie for the night," He said flatly.
James balked. "Wha-What!?"
"I ain't giving her to you," Ben began, "Especially after last night!
She was amazing! The house was empty today too, so I got to have even
MORE fun!"
Well James thought, that explained why Ben seemed winded. But why give
him Barbie?
"Your Grandma wants me to attend some church function tonight," Ben
said snorting, "Boring as hell, but she is putting me up. It's cool
though, I doubt I'd be able to go at it again tonight anyway and as you
are the only other person to know about Barbie, I figured you'd keep an
eye on her. Besides, man you NEED to get laid."
James was about ready to protest at that remark, but didn't feel like
getting into an argument today. So he simply nodded his head unsure of
what else to do. Besides, this WOULD give him the opportunity he
wanted.
"Cool man, thanks, I'll pick her up at nine tomorrow," Ben said and
with that he left on his way home, leaving 'Barbie' in his care. She
stood there standing in the middle of his room awaiting an order.
'Will she obey my commands?' James wondered. It was Ben who had bought
her. Well only one way to find out.
"Barbie, uh, are you willing to do what I tell you?" He asked, he was
still a little surprised when she nodded.
"Yes, Ben told me to do whatever you commanded me to before we got
here," She said, her cheerleader voice filling the silent room.
He sighed. He wished she wouldn't talk like that. A normal voice would
do just fine.
"Like this?" She suddenly said, her voice sounded much more like a
normal girl's would. He nearly leaped out of his skin in surprise.
"How did you know I was thinking that!?" He practically demanded.
"I can sense what you desire me to be," She said her gaze still
unmoving from where it rested upon the wall when she first got here, "I
cannot read your mind, but I felt that you desired me to talk
normally."
James nodded. That made sense; after all, she was a sex doll. Still he
hated thinking of her as that. He regarded her for a while and startled
again when she once again spoke up.
"What do you command?" She asked.
He didn't know if he could command her. Even if she was supposed to be
just a doll. There was one thing he did want however, one thing that
had bothered him ever since it happened.
"I do not wish to call you Barbie," He began, "What would you like to
be called instead?"
It seemed like a simple question, yet unknown to him it was the
beginning of it all. It was a question that would change his life
forever.
"I... I do not understand," Barbie finally said.
He could almost see the confusion cross upon her face. Those dead
lifeless eyes suddenly seemed to have just a small amount of life to
them at that moment.
"I mean, you know, what do you want me to call you? Don't you have a
name that you would like to call yourself?" He replied.
For some reason, it just didn't occur to him that a doll would not have
a name for itself.
"I, I've always been given my name. I... I've never chosen one for
myself..." Barbie said. She had begun to shuffle uneasily, something
that should have surprised him, but it did not.
(Well she is a doll,) He finally thought, (It's only logical she would
not have a will of her own, but then... then why do I feel like I'm
talking to a real person and not something like a machine?)
For some reason he just couldn't see her like that. Still, he didn't
want to call her Barbie. She needed a new name...
"So you have no idea on a name for yourself?" He asked. She shook her
head.
"Okay let's see then," He sighed. This was going to be harder then he
thought. Looking at the various posters and pictures on his wall, he
got an idea.
"Okay then, do you see all the girls I have pictures of on my walls?"
He asked. She nodded.
"I want you to take a look at them, she if there are any you like," He
said. Sure they were all videogame and anime girls, but they'd still do
the trick.
"Like?" She asked, the confusion almost present again. Sigh, this
couldn't be easy could it?
"You know any you think are pretty or nice looking, anyone that seems
to make you feel something inside," He replied.
"Feel..." She said, her voice having a strange tone to it.
Like that of one who had never entertained that particular thought
before. Moving from picture to picture she placed her hand on each
poster she could reach, (some were high up and he had used a chair to
put them there). She held her hand there for a few moments, apparently
studying them, before moving to the next. Occasionally she'd ask a
question.
"Who is this girl?" She asked upon placing her hand upon a certain two
page picture he had clipped from an anime magazine. The girl in it was
lying down, her blond hair spilling out around her. She seemed to have
two strange mechanical objects upon her head.
"She is Chi, from an anime called Chobits. Strange, she's a lot like
you in fact," James replied watching from his seat in front of his
computer.
"Oh," She simply replied before moving on, "And who is this girl?" This
time it was a red head in a blue swimsuit.
"That's Ranko or female Ranma," He replied, "She from the Animation
Ranma 1/2"
"I see," She said again before moving on. As she passed James on his
chair she stopped in front of a set of three posters that had the same
group of girls in each one. Placing her hand on a girl with short blue
hair she turned to James.
"This... Who is this girl? You have many pictures of her," She asked.
She was referring to the three pictures he had placed over his
television. It was true, he did have many pictures of this particular
anime girl, many pictures indeed.
"That... That is Amy Mizuno," He said looking at the blue-haired anime
girl with dream-like eyes, "She is from my favorite anime of all.
Sailor Moon."
"Why do you have so many pictures of her?" She asked.
"Well, I like her. I like her very much," he answered. The sadness in
his voice was unmistakable, this was one thing he always despised
himself for. "She is the one girl I wish I could meet above all others.
That is why I have so many pictures of her."
"Why... is that?" She asked.
"Well," He began, "She is kind and gentle. She's very smart and always
helpful to her friends. Such a kind soul..."
He again looked at the picture mesmerized. He couldn't help it. Then he
sighed sadly.
"Why do you sigh?" Barbie asked.
"Because I swore to myself I'd never develop a crush on a movie star or
someone like that," He replied. "Because I knew it would be a love that
would never happen and yet... and yet I fall in love with a cartoon.
How pathetic is that?"
"I don't think it is," Barbie said, startling James.
(She didn't what!?) He thought looking up. She was looking right at
him.
"What?" He asked.
"I don't think you're pathetic," She said, "Love is something you can
not help. It simply happens."
(How could she know?) He wondered. Wasn't she supposed to be just a
doll? (No,) he suddenly thought, (I don't think she's just a doll. Not
anymore. There must be something else going on here.)
"I think..." She began looking at the girl in the poster again, "I
think I'd like my name to be Amy."
"I think it suits you actually," He said.
She smiled looking at the poster. Amy... That did sound like a great
name for her. He could almost see her looking like Amy Mizuno too. She
wouldn't have blue hair of course. Maybe black? Yeah and she'd be
wearing that blue dress he liked Amy in. The one that looked like a
tank top merged with a skirt. He could almost see her in it now as she
stood there...
When he nearly fell backward in his chair when he saw she WAS standing
there like that. Exactly like that, the same dress he had just been
thinking of and everything. He almost choked. To him, she looked like
an angel who had just arrived from heaven. She turned to him, flashing
a smile.
"Do you like me like this?" She asked, her voice even had the same
British accent Amy Mizuno's did. Meanwhile her eyes actually had joy in
them. Though they still appeared glassy, they no longer seemed so
lifeless.
"Yes very much," He answered. "However, do YOU like yourself like
that?" She seemed to think about that a bit.
"I'm not sure," He said, confusion actually showing on her face now,
"I'm not sure I can like or dislike."
"I'm sure you can," James said, "You picked out a name for yourself,
I'm sure you can like and dislike, try to do so." Something seemed to
happen to her at that moment, but he wasn't sure what.
"I... I do," She said, the joy appearing once more, "I really like this
form and my name. Thank you." She smiled again.
That smiled warmed him to the soul. James was more then willing to do
whatever it took to see that smile as many times as he could.
"So Amy," He said smiling at saying her new name, "What would you like
to do?"
"Me?" She said, "I am to fulfill your wishes, that is what I do."
James shook his head. "Well then how's this? I wish for you to find
something you want to do today." He said, he needed to remember that
something else or not, she was designed to be an obedient doll.
Amy meanwhile seemed unsure of what to do, till an idea seemed to come
to her.
"This Sailor Moon," She said slowly, "the anime Amy is from. You
mentioned it was your favorite. Do you have any episodes of it?"
"Of course," He replied, "I have the entire fourteen DVD set of the
English dub, I only watch the English dub as that's how I fell in love
with it in the first place, though I'd guess you wouldn't care if it
was dubbed or subbed." He realized as he finished looking at her.
She shook her head no in response. "I would like to see it if I could,"
She said.
"Sure no problem," James answered reaching for the first of the
fourteen DVDs. Placing it in his PS2 they were soon watching the first
episode and beyond.
As the shows went on James sat upon his futon watching it along with
Amy right besides him. Unable to help himself he constantly glanced
over in her direction, still amazed by her beauty. Yet it wasn't just
that... There was something else that seemed to play at his notice.
He hadn't known her that long at all, Ben had only bought her yesterday
and they had only been talking in his room for about an half hour,
before beginning to watch this anime which had been a little over an
hour ago. But something about her seemed to 'touch' him somehow.
He could sense kindness from her, but was it a general thing or
something he had done when he made her Amy? He could sense she was very
much like the Amy in the anime Sailor Moon, yet there were differences.
For one this Amy had a childlike wonder, while Amy Mizuno being a
scholar had a more scientific way of acting. Plus this Amy wasn't
exactly alive, but just an animated doll. Yet he refused to let that
bother him at the moment.
He found himself growing to like this girl, doll or not, more and more
as the shows played on. It wasn't long before he wished he could put
his arm around her and have her lean into him. But he just couldn't'
bring himself to do it. In the past he had always been shy, one of many
reasons he was still single and he couldn't' even go up and 'talk' to a
girl. Let alone do something like that.
Which was when he was reminded that she could sense his desires when
she suddenly leaned her head right on his shoulder, pressing her body
up against his. He startled for a moment, but when she looked up at him
for a brief second and smiled, he relaxed and smiling back, putting his
arm around her drawing her close. That was when he noticed two things
amiss.
One she wasn't breathing.
Two she was cold like a corpse.
He almost broke free of their grip when he remembered she wasn't
actually alive, so of course she would not need to breathe. This caused
him to get his bearings again, but he felt uneasy holding a breathless
figure. Thankfully as if sensing his discomfort she suddenly began to
breathe, but he could see it was an unnatural breath, merely a mimic of
the real thing. She also warmed up, but this also felt unnatural, like
putting a hot potato in a stuffed animal. Still it was enough for him
to be able to relax back into thinking of her as a 'she' and not an
'it'.
Things went on again without incident until James began to get hungry.
Looking at the clock he saw it was near dinner time and so paused the
current DVD they had been on. This caught the attention of Amy.
"What's wrong?" She asked.
"Nothing is wrong, it's just dinner time and I'm getting hungry." He
answered getting up.
"Oh," She said. As she looked back at the paused screen, her eyes
seemed to be sad for some reason.
"Do you want anything?" He asked her.
She looked up confused again. "Want anything?" She repeated.
"You know to eat," He said, "For dinner."
"I am not required to eat," She replied, "I can if you so wish it, but
it's not needed as I'm not alive."
"Oh," James said. He had forgotten she was not human, even after the
breathing incident. "Well I guess there's no point in giving you food
if you can't taste it. Uh, I guess I'll just make myself something and
we can continue to watch the show alright?"
"Alright," She said.
Still he couldn't help but notice her sadness. As if not being able to
eat depressed her. Truthfully, he thought that was probably exactly it.
He made himself a plate of leftover spaghetti he had made last night.
His spaghetti was the one dish he could cook very well. Anyone who had
ever eaten it had said it was very good. He only wished he could share
it with Amy...
Taking his plate into his room he sat by Amy once more and restarted
the DVD, allowing it to continue. As he sat there eating and seeing Amy
stare at the screen, his illusion of her realness had faded and so the
night went on the magic damped. They did not embrace again.
Finally as the hours went by, James finally began to grow too tired to
stay awake and so it was time to go to bed. As the last episode they
had been watching stopped, he turned the PS2 off along with the TV and
then turned to Amy who was looking at him with a questioning gaze once
more.
"No more Sailor Moon?" She asked. James laughed, doll or not, she
looked so cute like that, just like a little child.
"I'm afraid not, I'm tired and it's time for me to go to sleep." He saw
the look on her face and said, "Let me guess, you don't need to sleep
either?" She shook her head.
"No being not alive-" She began.
"You don't have any need to sleep either," He finished, "I should have
known. Okay let's see..."
He looked around the room. Well he could always just have her sit in
the closet or on his chair, but neither of those options pleased him.
For one, she may be a doll, but he just couldn't bring himself to keep
her in a closet. The chair didn't please him either, as he didn't think
he would be able to sleep with someone sitting there like they were
watching him.
Getting up he moved his futon a bit to the side opening a space in
front of his shelf of movies a bit allowing enough room for someone to
lay down. He then unrolled his sleeping bag and handed Amy a blue fuzzy
blanket.
"Well I know you can't actually sleep, but for the sake of me, I'd like
you to pretend I guess. You can use this sleeping bag as a cushion and
use the blanket as a cover," He paused and thought for a second, "I
don't have an extra pillow I'm afraid, so I guess you could use the
sleeping bag as the cover and the blanket as a make shift pillow. Sorry
it's not much."
"That is all right, I don't require comfort," Amy said simply, laying
upon the sleeping bag and covering herself with the blanket.
She then rolled over, onto her side, her back facing him. Happy that
she indeed looked like a normal person sleeping, he himself laid upon
his futon, rolling onto his right side, facing away from her. Getting
comfortable, he then attempted to sleep.
Like always though, it wasn't going to happen right away. James was a
light sleeper. Something that had really bothered him when he used to
sleep in the living room of his old house, but those days were behind
him. Now he had his own room, but sleep wasn't any quicker to come.
Lying there, he began to think about what had happened to him in the
past two days. Who would have thought that he'd be sleeping next to a
magical doll that looked almost identical to Amy Mizuno, his anime
crush? Even more, why wasn't he totally freaked out? I mean this isn't
something that just happens in everyday life after all. He didn't
really need to ask that question, he knew why.
It was something amazing, something he had been looking for his entire
life. Maybe that's why he had had that dream the other night. He now
knew magic existed. Real honest magic. The excitement and wonder that
had begun to fill him ever since that day when he first witnessed her
grow hair had made him so happy, he just hadn't had much time to think
about anything else. He didn't even realize it as he played his
videogames and such today. This entire adventure just felt so unreal,
he acted like nothing was wrong.
But it was real, it was happening. There was a girl in his room who was
a magical doll and yet... Yet he wished it was more that she was a real
person, a real girl. Right now she seemed to genital, so kind and most
importantly so full of wonder. She was just so amazing.
(Great,) James thought, (I'm falling in love with a doll.)
But he couldn't help it. She was in the form of Amy Mizuno right now or
as similar as a real person could get to an animated character. He
began to wonder what it would be like to share a bed with her. Lay
there as they cuddled together through the night. Their warm bodies
pressed together like two lovers, her breasts upon his back...
He should have expected it when he suddenly felt two soft lumps press
into his back as Amy was suddenly pressed up behind him in his futon.
She still had the unnatural warmth and breathing going on, but this no
longer bothered him as much. What was bothering him was the fact she
was close. So close, in fact that her soft breasts WERE pressing into
his back. He swore he could feel his face turn crimson in blush.
"Um Amy, What are you doing?" He asked knowing full well the answer.
"I'm cuddling with you," She said softly, "Don't you want this?"
"Well sorta, but are you okay with it? I mean, it's such a big thing to
do..." He replied.
He expected her to answer in her typical unemotional way. Like 'I am to
serve you,' or something, but instead she spoke in the same soft
manner.
"It's alright," She almost whispered. "I don't mind, may I stay like
this?"
"I, I guess," Was all he could manage.
He gulped, he didn't understand it, but this was filling him with a
strange emotion. If he had to explain it, he would by saying it felt
like warm water running through him. They stayed like that for a good
while, until he finally drifted off to sleep.
***
He was awakened the next morning by his cell phone ringing. As he
groggy got up Amy also sat up looking at him with a strange look. It
almost looked as if she longed to lay like that again. He didn't have
time to think about it as the phone was quiet persistent to be
answered. Still sleepy, he reached over and hit the talk button.
"Mmf, Yeah?" He managed.
"Yo cuz, did ya have a WILD time last night?" Came Ben's rowdy
response.
James groaned, not him! Oh well, he DID say he was coming over at nine
AM to pick her up. Looking at the clock he realized it was a few
minutes past noon. What had happened?
"Hey, what's up? It's past noon," He asked Ben, the world slowly coming
more and more into focus.
"Yeah, that's what I'm calling for, you see I figured with as much fun
as Barbie is, (James cringed at that name), I'd go back to the shop and
get another, but when I got there the shop was gone! It was weird man,
there wasn't even a vacant shop where we found the place, it was just
wall! I'm talking bizarre! I suppose it doesn't matter though, I have
Barbie still. So anyway, I was planning on just hanging out here and
was wondering if you could bring Barbie down?"
"Yeah I guess," James sighed.
He didn't want to go to the mall, he didn't really want to see Ben and
he REALLY didn't want to give Barbie back to the jerk, but she was a
doll and Ben did buy her. He couldn't just keep her. He found himself
really wishing she WAS a real person at that point as he had no doubt
she'd decide on her own not to go back. But such thoughts were
hopeless. She was what she was.
"Cool thanks pal, I'll be in the food court, catch ya later!" With that
Ben hung up.
Sighing once more James began to prepare for the trip to the mall.
Going into his clothing box he pulled out a clean pair of underwear and
a washcloth and walked into the bathroom ready to take his morning
shower. It wasn't until he began to take off his shirt that he realized
Amy had followed him in. Taking one look at her and then at his half
way raised shirt, he blushed and immediately tugged his shirt back
down.
Amy, meanwhile, was just standing there looking at him, completely
unaware that what he was about to do was something she shouldn't be
present for. Still if she joined him in the shower... James immediately
pushed that thought out of his mind. What was he thinking!? He couldn't
do that! Lifting both hands, he firmly griped Amy's shoulders and
looked her straight in the eyes.
"Now listen Amy," He began, "I want you to wait outside this room and I
want you to STAY outside this room. You got that? You are not to come
in here. Not even if you sense that I desire for you to come in.
Understand? Stay out there no matter what!"
"But why?" She asked, the confusion back once more, "I am to stay near
you, that way I can fulfill your desires, I sense that you don't really
desire me to stay away."
"That may be, but I'm going to take a shower and for that you should
stay out there!" James said. He could feel the blush overtaking his
face as he tried to contain the rest of his body's excitement.
"Oh if that's the case then there is nothing to worry about," Amy said
matter-of-factly, "I do not break by getting wet, I can take a shower."
"Amy! That's not the point!" James said, his face turning crimson, "I
want you to stay outside this room okay? Can you just please do that?"
"But is it not a custom to have someone to scrub your back? And why are
you changing color?" Amy asked pointing at James' Face.
"AMY JUST STAY OUTSIDE!" James screamed pushing Amy out and locking the
door. Form the other side he heard as Amy replied, her voice seemed
sad.
"If that is what you wish."
James sighed falling against the door. How was he supposed to deal with
this? This would be the end of him.
***
"Must I?" Amy asked.
She looked so sad, James couldn't help but feel really bad that he was
making her do this.
"I'm sorry Amy, but you have to go back to Ben now. He is the one who
got you and I just can't take you from him. So you must go back to
being Barbie," He said, but his heart just wasn't in it.
If she had been a real person, he knew he'd have lost this argument,
but she was not real. She was just a doll.
"If I must," Amy said and within seconds, Barbie, complete with blond
hair and cheerleader get up, once more stood before him.
Her eyes still looked so sad. But how could lifeless eyes show
emotions? He just didn't understand this at all. He wanted to ask the
old man so many questions, but if what Ben had told him was true, that
place wasn't even there anymore. How would he ever find out what was
going on?
"Come on Am- I mean Barbie," James said, nearly choking on the name,
"We have to go down to the mall area," He hated her like this. This
form didn't suit her at all!
Wait, how would he know? How would he know if this form suited her or
not? He had barely known her for two days! Why did it hurt so much to
see her like this? Why?
"Alright," Barbie said in the same air headed voice she had had when
she first arrived.
James cringed; he'd have to hurry to the mall, as he couldn't bear this
much longer. Nodding, he led her down to his car and had her get in.
Then getting in himself he started it up and began the drive to the
mall.
The ride went in silence. Occasionally he'd steal a glance at Barbie to
see her head bowed, her eyes sad. He still wondered how eyes so
lifeless could show emotion. That's when it hit him. They did show
emotion, but they had no depth to them. It was like changing the eyes
of a Mr. Potato Head. They could show emotion but no sprit. This
realization left an empty feeling in his heart.
(Just a doll...) He thought sadly pulling up into the malls parking
lot, (just a lifeless doll...)
Pushing the thought as far from his mind as he could manage, which
wasn't very far, he got out and let Barbie out. They walked that way in
silence, the entire time Barbie kept the same saddened expression on
her face. This wasn't good, would Ben suspect something? James sighed
and directed his attention to finding where Ben could be.
Having entered the mall they began to walk through the walkways on the
upper floor. James hoped Ben wasn't looking for them on the lower
floor, he was afraid they'd somehow miss each other. Knowing his luck
anyway. Luckily that wasn't the case, they had hardly gone past the
Fye, a media video store, when Ben came jogging up to greet them. Ben
was wearing a plain black T-shirt and blue jeans. He wore the same
black shoes he always did. James noticed that for a brief second pain
seemed to flash across Barbie's face.
"Hey James, she's great in the sack ain't she?" Ben immediately said
upon running up.
James sighed inwardly. Why was this the way Ben had to greet him?
Sadly, he noticed some of the guys who were checking out the mall area
had heard Ben's statement and were giving catcalls and whistles to it.
Barbie did NOT seem happy, but she didn't outwardly show it. James'
heart seemed to ache, he only wished everyone would see her as Amy and
not Barbie. Well everyone except Ben anyway.
"Like I'm giving you a play by play run by," James responded.
The LAST thing he wanted was Ben to know he hadn't done anything like
that with Amy, er Barbie. Ben would never let him hear the end of it.
He looked in Barbie's direction again before going on. That's funny.
Barbie seemed happier for some reason.
"So you ready to take her back I gather? I'm not really into hanging at
the mall today," James said getting to the point.
Ben nodded vigorously and began to head over toward Barbie.
"You bet man! Can't wait to try her out again in the sack!" He said a
bit loudly.
James wanted to punch him out. Doll or not She didn't deserve this.
However that was when fate seemed to intervene once more.
"You want to WHAT now?" A teenage girl said walking up.
She had blond hair that was unlike any other James had seen in real
life. It went down all the way to the back of her knees. She wore a
simple white T-shirt with the word 'Venus' written on it in bold black
letters. She also wore a short, but decent orange skirt and a pair of
orange high heels. Last he noticed was her blue eyes. Blue eyes that
were filled with anger.
"I thought you said you were waiting to get something from your friend,
I was coming to take you up on your offer for a look around the mall
and I find you here saying that!?" She shouted.
Most people were leaving the area by now, not wanting to deal with the
girl's rising anger. Meanwhile, James however was lost as to just what
was going on.
"Calm down Mina," Ben said.
James balked, Mina!? Come to think of it, she kinda looked and sounded
like Mina from Sailor Moon. Wow, first Amy, then Mina. How strange is
that?
"I was only joking! I'd never dream of doing anything with her, she's
James' girlfriend. James is that friend I told you about, right James?"
Ben said as he looked in James' Direction.
James couldn't help but smile. Spend more time with Amy? Sure!
"That's right, I just came down here to deliver what Ben wanted me to,"
James said as he looked back at Ben.
Hopefully Ben would pick up on this and tell him just what the heck he
was supposed to be bringing him.
"Yeah, that ten bucks he owes me so I can have money," Ben said with a
grin, "Alright hand it over Cuz."
James glared, ten dollars huh? Figures the little sneak would choose
that as the item. Reluctantly he reached into his pocket and pulled out
a ten-dollar bill and handed it to Ben.
"Thanks cuz, I'll pay you back later," Ben whispered to James as he
took the money.
"You're damn right you will," James hissed back, luckily Mina seemed to
have missed the entire exchange and was happily waiting off to the
side. She even acted like Mina, kind but a bit ditzy.
"Oh okay," Mina said her face all smiles.
(Yep, just like Mina alright,) James thought to himself trying to keep
from interfering.
He didn't really want this girl to go out with the likes of Ben, but
she was a real person after all and as much as he knew Ben would play
her, he wouldn't physically harm her. Still he almost told her to stay
clear.
"Okay Mina, now let's go have some fun!" Ben exclaimed taking Mina's
hand in his own.
As he lead her away Mina looked back at James and 'Barbie'. "Bye! Sorry
I couldn't stick around to get to know you better! Oh and I like your
short hair miss, miss... whatever your name is!"
James laughed, they never did tell her Barbie's name. Hopefully Ben
would be too intent on trying to woo her to mention it. James would
rather Mina know Barbie as 'Amy'.
(Hey wait, didn't Mina say she liked Barbie's short hair? But it was
Amy who had short hair, not Barbie.)
Wondering if Barbie had changed without him knowing it, he turned his
head to look at her. Sure enough, it was not Barbie, but Amy who stood
before him, her smile ever so warming.
"Um Amy," James began.
She cut him off. "I think I know what you're going to ask. I could feel
that you wished for everyone but Ben to see me as Amy. They do. Only
Ben still sees me as Barbie," She said, her voice carrying the British
accent once more.
James smiled. He loved her like this. If only...
James shook his head; he wasn't going to think about that. Why not just
enjoy it for the time being? Holding out his arm he looked into Amy's
eyes. They still held no depth, but right now he didn't care. He didn't
want to admit what he knew deep down, what was happing to him.
"Amy my dear lady, would you like a tour of the mall?" He said smiling
the warmest smile he had in such a long time.
Amy returned it. "I would like that very much," She said taking his
arm.
However she didn't do what James had thought she would do. Instead of
immediately dragging him to one shop or another she simply walked
beside him. Not leading him anywhere. It still took a while for it to
register just why not.
She wasn't real, as he found himself forgetting again and again it
seemed. She was just a doll, designed to fulfill whatever desires he
had. She could be and do nothing more. He wasn't pleased with that
thought anymore now then he had been yesterday. That's when he got an
idea.
(She has to fulfill my desires right?) James mentally asked himself,
(Then what if I desire her to be more like a person and drag me from
store to store like girl from an anime wou...)
He never got to finish that thought as suddenly Amy grabbed his arm and
lurched forward dragging him along with her. Startled, it was all he
could do to keep up.
(I keep forgetting she can 'read' my desires,) He thought as he was
dragged into a particular little shop that sold stuffed animals.
Finally being able to collect himself after the sudden motion he
managed to steal a look in Amy's direction. Her eyes seemed joyful
enough if you looked over the reoccurring flaw. He smiled, sure she
wasn't real, but she was certainly able to cast the illusion. This
could be quite fun.
"And why did we come in here?" He asked immediately taking stock of
what the store had in search of any black panther or cat stuffed
animals. Like always there weren't any. He inwardly sighed.
"Don't you think they are just TOO cute?" She replied as she picked up
a small black teddy bear.
He smiled at this. This was really too good to be true. He had always
wanted a life like this. Not so much as a cute girl next to him but
just the fact there WAS a girl next to him, who was WITH him. She was
smart, funny and obviously had a love for things that were cute. Being
a outward fan of Hamtaro himself he found nothing wrong with that.
"Why don't you pick something out that you like?" He suggested as she
browsed the shelves, having put the teddy back some time ago.
She stopped moving suddenly at that and stood there for a few seconds.
He was afraid he may have actually broke her or something when she
looked at him in that same confused way. Then it hit him.
(Oh no!) He thought.
"Something I like? I do not understand," She said a bit too loudly for
his liking.
The store clerk jerked her head in their direction, but luckily another
customer took her attention away again, much to James' relief. Now, he
had to once again explain things.
"You know, like how you chose your form," He began in a voice barely
above a whisper in order to not attract anymore attention, "You must be
able to feel a little something if you were able to choose that. Just
go with that feeling again. Look at the stuffed toys here and when you
find one you feel that way about, pick it up."
"I... I think I understand," Amy said more quietly this time.
(She must have read my desire to be silent,) James thought momentarily
as Amy sprang into action again, now browsing the many shelves of the
store, looking at each stuffed animal very carefully, as one may search
a CD for scratches. She continued to do this for a while picking up
each and every animal at least twice before she stopped on a stuffed
shark.
"I think I like this one," She said holding it up smiling, "It has a
cute smile!"
James shuddered inwardly. He was afraid of sharks. That was the LAST
thing he'd want to see in his room, but he wasn't about to back out of
his offer, not on his life. He knew people would call him stupid or
silly for thinking as he did, but he just didn't find that as
honorable.
"Alright, let's go buy it then!" James said doing his best to smile.
It was a bit uneasy, but it was a smile. He knew Amy being as she was
wouldn't mind anyway. They made their purchase and were soon out of the
store. They continued to walk around the hallways, this time just
looking to see what was there when James felt Amy tug him once more. He
was prepared for it this time however and glanced up at the place she
was dragging him too.
And stopped dead in his tracks.
She was dragging him into a Victoria's Secret! Upon seeing that all
systems immediately switched to 'anchor' and that was that. James
wasn't budging. This of course caused Amy to turn around and frown.
"What's wrong? Why do you stop?" She asked clearly confused. It looked
like there was more to this confusion then just why he wasn't moving.
"Amy, th-th-th," He stuttered.
He mentally scolded himself. He wasn't a child; it shouldn't be
difficult to pronounce a simple name! He calmed himself and tried
again.
"That's Victoria's Secret! We can't go in there!" To empathize that
fact he trusted his arm out pointed right at the entrance.
"But why not?" Amy asked.
James sighed. Here we go again. "That's not a place I should be going
into," He said. Hopefully that would be enough.
"But all my previous owners went in there with me. They had me try on
various things, I figured you would want to do that as well," She said.
James blushed.
"Well uh er, N-no! Not at all! In fact I desire for us to get as far
from this as we can!" He said hoping she didn't pick up what he had
just been imagining. No such luck.
"No you didn't," She said tilting her head clearly not understanding
why he was lying, "I could sense a great amount of pleasure rise in you
at the thought."
"Well we are not ACTING upon that okay! Now let's go!" James said
grabbing her arm and trying to drag her away. She wouldn't budge
however.
"Is it because of the secret?" She asked.
This caused James to stop. "What?" He asked.
"The secret. It's called Victoria's Secret. I have never been told what
that secret is, do you know?" She replied as innocent as a child.
"Er..." He scanned his mind frantically.
How was he supposed to answer THAT? It probably had to do with the fact
it was most men's secret fantasy to see women in them. Amy's image
leaped into his mind wearing nothing but a black lace bra and panties.
This caused him to turn bright red.
"James?" Amy asked, "You're turning that color again. Are you sick?"
Some nearby girls who had been going into the store snickered and gave
James a teasing look. One grabbed a near by blue set of bra and panties
and held them up while pointing to Amy. She then proceeded to mouth
'She'd look hot'.
"James you're turning even darker!" Amy exclaimed.
James had had enough, grabbing Amy by the arm once more and trying to
hide his blush from the public he nearly shouted.
"It means... that you can't go in until night! Yeah that's it! We'd
best be on our way!" He said pulling her away and actually getting her
to move this time.
"But those other girls are going in..." She said as she pointed to
them.
"AMY WE ARE GOING SOMEPLACE ELSE!" He screamed.
The surrounding crowd snickered.
***
The day had been a blast, Amy had constantly dragged James from one
store to another, pointing and asking about various things. James had
enjoyed every minute of it (Though he could have done without the
Victoria's Secret episode). He was also a bit disappointed that since
she wasn't human, they couldn't share ice cream or any other food, but
with the full force of what the day brought, James wasn't complaining.
To his luck, they didn't even pass Ben and Mina once the entire time.
James was in high spirits when they got back into his car and headed
back to his place. But as they drew near to where he lived, the feeling
that had been eating away at his gut had begun to grow. With each
passing inch of the car, he knew that they were getting closer to his
home and closer to what he would have to face once there. So when they
had parked and were heading up the stairs to his apartment, he felt his
footsteps getting heavier and heavier. His entire body had joined them
when he got to his bedroom door. By the time they were both inside and
had the rooms door locked, he had felt like he had just run the
marathon. But that was nothing to the heaviness he felt in his heart.
Exhausted, he plopped down into his chair.
Amy did not miss what was going on and immediately was by James side,
depthless worry upon her face.
"James? What is wrong? Did today not go as you desired?" She asked,
taking his hand in hers.
He looked down at her hand as he felt it grip his own. It still held of
warmth, but only an imitation. An imitation...
"No Amy that's not it, everything went well to my desire," He said
sadly. It was clear that Amy did not understand.
"Then, why are you sad?" She asked simply. She leaned closer to him
getting down on her knees to better balance.
James took one look into her dark, depthless eyes and sighed. "Amy
there is something I have to tell you, something very important," He
said taking both of her hands into his.
Neither of them noticed when at that moment, the radio suddenly buzzed
to life, the alarm having been set for the night instead of morning.
Strangely, it was just at that moment that a song began.
"Yes?" Amy asked.
Her eyes seemed fearful. As if he was about to tell her to go back to
Ben and stay there. Or so James thought. He wondered if she even HAD
any thoughts to herself. He stared at her for a full half-minute, still
unaware of the song which had switched it's melody. Amy being what she
was simply waited, yet her eyes still shown in fear. The melody however
had become almost haunting. Soon its lyrics began to be sung. Which
James, spoke over unknowingly.
Once in a dream, far beyond these castle walls...
"Amy, I realized something as I hung out with you yesterday evening and
today," He began trying to keep the tears from her eyes.
Down near the bay, where the moonlit water falls...
"Once you became Amy I could feel it beginning, but I didn't want to
admit it. I was afraid of it," He continued.
He swore that Amy seemed like she wanted to cry. But being a doll, no
tears came.
I stood alone, while the mistral sang his song
So afraid I'd lost my soul...
"Amy, I know you're just a doll, I was there when Ben got you from that
store, but I can't help but have a feeling for you, a feeling I'm not
sure you can even imitate." James had broken into tears now, but he
pressed on. He had to tell her. "But regardless of that, I know without
a doubt in my heart, that I Love you Amy."
There in the fog, the song kept calling me
Leading me on with his haunting melody...
Amy did not speak for a bit. She seemed almost frozen in place. Could
she be alive? Could just a small bit of her truly be alive? He had to
know, he simply had to know if there was a soul within this girl he had
before him. Finally, she spoke. Her words almost seemed shaky.
Deep in my heart, a voice kept echoing...
"What is it that you desire from me?" She asked. James griped her hands
even tighter.
I knew I'd soon be wandering...
He looked into those eyes, those eyes that had remained lifeless for so
long, but he knew. He knew there was something else. At that moment, as
he stood there staring into them, he could see just a small bit of
depth and then he knew.
Far beyond these castle walls!
"That was you, wasn't it Amy!" He almost shouted, his tears had begun
to fall freely now.
Where the distant harbor meets the sky!
"That dream I had, it was you trying to call out to me!" Her eyes
seemed to alter.
There the battle raged like hell!
"You're alive in there somewhere aren't you?! You were fighting to free
yourself!" He was shouting now, but not in anger, he was shouting out
her pain. The pain he could now feel too.
And every dove had lost it's will to fly...
"I am just a Dream Doll," She said her expression now unreadable. "I
have no thoughts of my own, I can only do as you desire."
James sat there staring at her. It couldn't be true. It just couldn't
be. He felt despair crushing him. Desperately he looked around his room
for anything not even knowing what he was looking for.
That's when he saw the stuffed shark he had bought her sitting on his
computer desk.
"Amy if that was true..." He began slowly looking her in the eyes
again, "if that was true, why did you get a stuffed shark at the mall?
I hate sharks. I have for a long time. It was not -I- who desired for
you to get it."
Amy didn't answer.
"You are alive Amy!" He said with renewed effort. "At least something
in you is! Something has to be!"
Amy sat silent still. Finally she spoke quietly.
"I had given up hope," Amy said, her face once more downcast, but her
eyes. Her eyes had depth to them. "I remember that I was once alive,
but that was so long ago. I remember hoping that someone would hear me,
that someone would find me. But no one ever did."
"I heard you Amy," James said lifting her hands up to his chest, "I
heard you, what should I do to help you?"
"I don't think you can, I am a doll, my only purpose is to grant men's
desires," Amy said not looking up. "There is nothing you can do to help
me."
"NO!" James shouted as loud as he could, tears streaming down his face,
"No! I refuse to believe that! Isn't there anything I can do?
Anything!?"
"You can tell me your desires and I will grant them. That is all you or
I can do," She replied simply.
Neither of them noticed it, but it was at that point the song seemed to
almost stop. Amy looked into James' eyes, her expression that of great
sadness.
"I do not know what else to do," She said.
James lowered his head. He couldn't take this, the girl he loved was a
doll or a person who was now nothing more then a doll. Did the old man
do this on purpose!? He had seemed so nice. But how could he have done
this to her? How could anyone be so cruel as to make someone just a
doll, a doll who could only grant desires...
James' head snapped up. Could that be it? Could he use that to free
her? He had to try.
"Amy, I know what I desire!" He said.
The song began to pick up again. One instrument beginning a climb up
that was certainly leading to something. Amy looked him right in his
eyes, her expression had become blank. She was almost completely doll
like again. But James wasn't going to let it stay that way.
"I want you to be able to eat and sleep. Feel joy and pain," He began
his eyes burning with his love. "I want you to be able make your own
decisions, to be your own person! To have your own likes, dislikes and
opinions! I want you to be able to feel all the emotions, happiness,
sadness, anger, sorrow, worry, wonder and most importantly... Love! I
want you to be able to live your life the way you wish to!"
"Amy," He said drawing her as close to him as he could. "I want you to
be ALIVE!"
The rest of the instruments suddenly exploded into life and at the same
moment Amy's head reared back as she gasped for breath as if she had
been underwater this whole time and had just broken the surface. An
eerie white glow began to emit from her body as James backed up in
shock, watching the spectacle unfold before him. She began to sweat as
the light intensified, nearly gasping for breath now. The music so
synchronized with the event continued its tune of wakening, before
vanishing into brief silence once more. The light around Amy died out
and she slumped forward, but did not fall.
"Amy?" James asked worryingly.
He had begun to draw closer when he suddenly stopped and let out a
gasp. She was different; he could already see the change. She was
breathing. Not some imitated act of breath, she was -actually-
breathing. That was real sweat that was spread upon her skin. Her life
force, once barley audible, was now practically screaming. She wasn't a
doll anymore. She was a person. She was a real person!
"Amy!" James said, his voice overcome with love, relief and happiness
all at once. "I can sense it! You're alive! Your really a human now!"
At this Amy looked up. For a second James was afraid he'd see anger,
disgust or even hatred on her face. But instead he saw the same
happiness he he
