The Bravado and the Borgias'

Carlo wondered not for the first time he hitched his star to Caesar
Borgia's. The man had as much honor as an adder! Right now he was the
bodyguard of Lucrezia, hardly an enviable task!
They were on their daily ride with Carlo astride his stallion Ajax.
Carlo had to admit she rode with her Duenna. What a joke her needing a
Duenna! He thought with what the ladies found an irresistible devil may
care grin.
Three masked men with drawn swords burst out of a clump of trees and
rode hard at them! In a flash his blade was out and he galloped right
at them. This surprised the three as they thought he would flee! He
smashed his trained war steed into the nearest enemy's horse and
Carlo's sword went through the man's throat. He turned to parry the
thrust of the taller of the two remaining and he repose went under the
man's armpit into the unarmored body. The man stared for a moment into
eternity. He remaining man hacked at him, but his armor took the blow.
Then Carlo's bloody sword was in his opponent's groin. The man spit at
him and Carlo kicked him off his horse. Lucrezia came up her dark eyes
sparkling with excitement.
"How many men have you killed, brave Carlo?"
"Twenty, my Lady."
"Is it true that you are the best swordsmen in Italia."
He grinned with while teeth flashing under his black beard." No, in the
world."
She laughed, as she found his bravado exciting and attractive.
He dismounted. The dying assassin vainly reached for his dagger and
then fell back.
"Give grace, comrade!" he begged.
"Gladly!"
"Wait! " Commanded Lucrezia. "First who sent you to kill me?"
"Does it matter," the dying spat, "all Italia hates you and your
family? Well if you must know it was the King of Naples - you and your
brother murdered his son, your beloved husband of the moment!"
She nodded and Carlo's dagger found the man's heart ending his agony.
"It's very annoying; people keep associating me with my brother and
father. I really am a sweet, simple girl."
Carlo's eyes had an ironic gleam. Calling herself a sweet simple girl
was like saying a leopardess was only a house cat. He bowed politely
and said:
"Of course, my lady."
She looked at him and smiled. No doubt she was beautiful and a man
could lose his heart - not to mention his head over such a face, figure
and smile.
"You've saved my life! I wish I could reward you - Ah personally, but
my brother would have both our heads - or at least yours!" She laughed.
"And it is too handsome a head to lose! It would be a pretty reward for
saving my life to cost you yours."
On the ride back to Rome she rode close to him and said pensively. "I
truly envy you Carlo!"
"Why, my lady?"
She laughed ruefully. "Well people spit and make the sign of the cross
at me to ward off the evil eye. My body is used as a political bribe.
You have freedom, you're unmatched with the sword and nobody - even my
brother would dare insult you! He's afraid of you, you know?"
Carlo considered. "He probably is - his skill with arms is at best
average. But my life could be over tomorrow - he who lives by the sword
- dies by the sword."
Lucrezia laughed again. "You sound like my father the pope. What a holy
man he is."
"If you say so, my lady."
She looked slyly at him - "You don't believe all those silly rumors
about him being in league with demons, Carlo?"
"No. I don't believe in demons. Human beings have enough evil to fill
hell ten time over."
She smiled and said nothing.
At their parting she asked. "Do you go to see your lady love?"
He bowed gracefully. "With your gracious permission, my lady."
She waved her bejeweled hand gracefully. "Of course, bring her by
tomorrow I would like to meet the female who captivated the greatest
warrior in Italia."
"She would be honored."
"First though, I wish to make our little mishap know to my brother."
She turned to a silent servant. "Call him."
Soon a very handsome man appeared. "Well sister? I am a very busy man?"
"Caesar, Carlo here saved my life. The king of Naples sent three
assassins to kill me."
With a politician's smile he clapped Carlo on the back and embraced
him. Carlo was relieved not to have his purse picked or find a knife in
his back.
"Well done! I name you Don Carlo de Lanai."
Carlo bowed and said his thanks.
"Cheaper than gold, brother." said Lucrezia later.
"Much!" he laughed.
Carlo went to see Gina his lover. She was a beautiful young woman he
had saved from slavers a few years ago. Her family was prosperous and
grateful. She had lived with him since, trying to get him to marry her.
The next day he presented her to Lucrezia who chatted with her in
friendly fashion and gave her a fabulous ring. Gina protested, but
Lucrezia said:
"Do you value it more than my life? Carlo saved my life."
She then sent Carlo to inspect her guards. She then took the
opportunity to talk long with Gina. The girl was very flattered that
the most famous and powerful woman in Europe took so much time with
her. Like many who meet the great face to face Gina felt she had
misjudge Lucrezia.
A week later Lucrezia stared at her brother. "I am to marry Alfonso,
the son of the Duke of Ferrara? You know I will be a hostage to them in
their court. I am so sick of being a political pawn!"
He slapped her. "You forget yourself, sister."
"So do you brother. So do you! Father likes me better than you!"
"Does not!" he replied hotly.
"Does, too!"
"He has agreed to this marriage. Your children will some day rule the
greatest duchy in Italia. The marriage will take place in a week.
That's the end of it. Remember you are a Borgia!"
"People never let me forget."
The next day Lucrezia drugged her Duenna and called Carlo into her
private chambers.
He looked apprehensively around. Was she going to try and seduce him? A
refusal would be death, acceptance would be death. But she only smiled,
fully clothed and offered him wine. He could not refuse - anyway why
should he - what could she gain by poisoning him? He drank. Suddenly
the room swam before his eyes and he could see Lucrezia's eyes,
gleaming like a cat in the firelight.
After he slumped unconscious the woman went to her bureau and from a
secret compartment pulled out a medallion. It looked cheap against her
magnificence clothes and jewelry. She undressed quickly and with
difficulty undressed Carlo. Then she put the medallion around her next
and with a quick prayer that it would work embraced the powerful man.
She felt a tingle and hope was wild within her heart. She stared at the
naked man on the carpet. He was shrinking. His beard was disappearing
and she felt the scratch of whiskers on her own smooth cheeks. Smiling
she ran to the mirror. YES! She was taller and her hair was shrinking
and her breasts were getting smaller. She looked back Carlo was getting
breasts. She noticed her small hammer shaped birthmark appear on his
left breast. His legs became shapely and his ass rounded. His powerful
muscles lost their resolution and became smooth and soft. At the same
time her body and muscles became strong and her breasts were totally
gone. Effortlessly she picked up a heavy chair in one hand. Lucrezia
looked in the mirror again and saw Carlo's face. Carlo now had hers.
She felt for her womanhood and found instead a budding male organ.
Carlo's masculinity was fast disappearing on him and reappearing on
her. Soon it was over.
Lucrezia dressed quickly in Carlo's clothes. She grinned at the
apparent Lucrezia lying naked on the floor. She picked up the 'woman up
and was surprised at how easy it was to carry her to bed. She put her
nightgown on the new Borgia and tuckered 'her' into bed. She then put
her rings on he new Lucrezia's fingers. Then the former Lucrezia took a
large bag of gold from its hiding place and grinned again. Thank God or
the devil for the medallion! She had escaped her fate, her life. It has
hard on Carlo, but - well he would be beautiful, young and rich. She
could turn him into a beggar and just have Lucrezia disappear, but she
wished him well. She really did she wasn't a monster like her father
and her brother. Really she wasn't.
"Goodnight sweet Princess." the new Carlo said and feeling ironic
kissed the sleeping woman's hand.
He got on Carlo's great stallion - women couldn't ride stallions and
galloped to his quarters. 'He' was looking forward to seeing what a man
felt like during sex. Gina was very beautiful and very cooperative when
he took her in his arms. Later Gina said with a smug smile.
"Gods blood! But you were eager tonight, my love." she said.
The new Carlo had a satisfied smile on his handsome face as he laid
back and grinned. That was great and no worry about budding with some
brat! 'I am now the handsome, dashing Carlo, the greatest swordsman in
Italia!' he thought
"I don't trust the Borgia's," 'he' said to Gina.
She shrugged, "Who does, Carlo? Who does?"
"I think its time we moved on. Let us got to Florence and get married."
"You mean it?" She was happy.
Inside Carlo's stolen body the former Lucrezia smiled. She knew
marriage was the lure and the drug that would cause Gina to ignore any
changes in her man.
They were packed and out the ancient city before midnight. A foolish
bandit tried to robe them outside the city, but 'Carlo' killed him
easily.
"The man was an idiot to attack me - the greatest swordsman in Italia!"
the new Carlo said with satisfaction.
Gina nodded thrilled. "What a man!" What protector she had - what a
husband! At the thought of her marriage she was transported into waves
of happiness.
It was noon before Carlo awoke from the drunken slumber. He looked
around. "Jesus save me!" he thought. I am in Lucrezia's bed! I am a
dead man if I can't get out of the city!" He tried to stand up but his
legs didn't hit the floor. He felt - unreal somehow. He could have
sworn he had breasts swinging! Then he looked at his hand. It was
smooth a delicate and expensive rings were on his slim fingers. The
rings belonged to Lucrezia Borgia. He suppressed a scream. Dashing to
the mirror he saw the terrified face of Lucrezia staring back at him.
Black Magic! He thought. Somehow the witch has stolen my body and
trapped me in hers.
Carlo sat down and stared at his creamy skin, lovely young breasts.
Hesitantly he felt between his legs. He was shocked but not surprised
to find female organs instead of his male ones. What was he going to
do? He cried for a while. If he said he wasn't Lucrezia he would be
imprisoned in a mad house. First he had to find out if the witch still
was in the city. He put on a robe of China silk and rang for Lucrezia's
maid.
He kept quiet and let her talk. Carlo found out he was to be married in
a week to the Duke of Ferrara's son. What a splendid marriage he
thought sardonically. I wonder how longer Caesar and Alexander will
allow this one to live? With the maid's help she dressed this new weak,
but lovely temptress body. The clothes were heavy and awkward, hard to
move in. The maid then dressed the long, gorgeous hair that went down
to a slim waist.
"Isn't madam, going to put-on make-up?" she asked as Carlo moved
towards the door.
Carlo grimaced. "Get it over with!" he told himself. Carlo was
surprised he did it well. Her body remembered, he thought. Over
breakfast she asked if 'Carlo' had come in.
"No my lady. When he left last night he told us that you have given him
a week's leave."
"That was generous of me," said 'Lucrezia' with irony that was lost on
the servants.
He knew all their names. It would be no trick to impersonate Lucrezia.
He wondered how she was treating Gina and his fury almost boiled out of
control. Was she in bed with his mistress? But that the least of his
problems. Was this a prank or did she mean to keep his body forever. He
was afraid it was forever - he remembered how lightly he had been
amused when she said how much she envied him. He sent a servant to his
old quarters, but they reported back the Carlo had left the city with
Gina and no one knew where. His new stomach tied itself into knots. It
was hardly a surprise but still a shock. That night he had to have
dinner with his 'brother' and 'father'.
He smiled like Lucrezia and talked like her all through dinner. 'Her'
father the pope was congratulating himself on making such a splendid
marriage for her beloved daughter.
At home in her palace the new Lucrezia was thinking about running away
- but to where and for what purpose? No, I am stuck she decided. As she
walked down the aisle in to be married by her father she was thinking -
At least I am a beautiful bride! No more fighting, no more killing -
just babies! God's wounds what a thought. But she kept the smile on her
face. At least this way she would be free of her brother and her
father! She vowed to do her best to protect her husband from them. He
was a decent young man and deserved better than an early death. There
were much worse life's than the one in front of her. She would be a
Duchess and rich. Outside she look at the poverty and terror that
Alexander and Caesar had brought upon Roma and thought there are much
worse things.
Epilogue
'Lucrezia' pleasantly surprised people in Ferrara. She seemed devoted
to their welfare and on her advise they rejected helping Caesar when
Alexander died.
A few years later Caesar Borgia died in France on the battlefield. The
victor - the famous Bravado Carlo - said he was never very good with
the sword - only with his mouth or his dagger in the back.
