Author's note: This story is part of my continuing effort to expand the horizons of Fictionmania. It's a bit of an avant-garde piece that may not be everyone's cup of tea. The format is a tad different from most every story that you might read in that it has much more of a play-script type appearance. It is supposed to be a written transcript of the news magazine "Dateline: NBC." The story is based on the concept introduced in the now classic story "For A Girl" by O2bxx, and even references it a few times. You may want to read that epic tale first, then come back and sample this one. It's not nearly the powerful force that the original was, and this one in and of itself a sample of what is to come. I had hoped that this short piece and the upcoming "feature length" story would be a full collaborative effort between myself and O2bxx, but unfortunately we lost contact shortly after agreeing to embark upon the journey. If you're out there, O2b, drop me a line! What drew me to "For A Girl" was its use of contemporary issue and setting that was very striking - real locations were used, and it seemed as though it was a real version of our own world, with the one major difference. I found it refreshing, and decided to try and enhance the concept further. FADE TO: Interior - Dateline Set PAULEY: It is a unique time to be growing up in America, especially for today's high-schooler. American kids didn't always have to stay up-to- date on the latest news regarding world affairs, science, and medicine - but this is no longer true today. With the ongoing war in Iraq creating murmurs and rumors of the draft's return, today's teenagers are understandably concerned. The other major problem facing teens today is the continued spread of Gender Biomorphism, or GB. The condition has struck almost 7500 adolescent boys between the ages of 13 and 18; and its causes remain a mystery to this day. For one young person, these two headlines have combined in a very unique and controversial way. Here's Jack Doyle with the story. FADE TO: Headline Graphic. "A Private Matter" Story by: Jack Doyle Produced by: Serena Masters FADE TO: Still Picture. Jeremy Hernandez wearing camouflage fatigues, age 13. DOYLE (voice over): Even at a young age, Jeremy Hernandez knew he always wanted to join the Army. CUT TO: Still Picture. Jeremy Hernandez, age 15, with 4 friends. Slow camera zoom towards Jeremy's image. DOYLE (voice over): He'd tell all of his friends on a daily basis how much he wanted to serve. BILL STEVENS (voice over): Jeremy would tell us stories about battles he'd read about in Vietnam and Desert Storm, and he'd tell us what the soldiers did right, and what they did wrong, and what he'd do differently. CUT TO: Still Picture. Jeremy Hernandez, age 16, wearing a football uniform. DOYLE (voice over): He had what seemed to be a normal life for a teenager. He was a starting wideout for the San Angelo High football team. CUT TO: Still Picture. Jeremy Hernandez, with Sarah Watters, Junior Prom. DOYLE (voice over): He had a girlfriend. CUT TO: Still Picture. Jeremy Hernandez, with SFC Harold Munoz. DOYLE (voice over): And he had his dream. With his parents' permission, Hernandez enlisted in the Army on his 17th birthday. Sergeant First Class Harold Munoz was his recruiter. FADE TO: Interview - SFC Harold Munoz MUNOZ: Jeremy was one of the most enthusiastic young men I've ever recruited. I never had to sell anything, he knew exactly what he wanted. His parents were very supportive. I had a feeling he'd go far in the Army. FADE TO: Exterior - San Angelo High School, San Angelo, TX DOYLE (approaching the camera): Hernandez was at the end of his junior year of high school when he enlisted. He entered into a program known as "split-option," where he would go through basic combat training that summer, return home to complete high school, and then after graduation, attend advanced job skill training before entering into active duty. He left San Angelo in May 2002 for Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, in order to begin the first phase of his training. CUT TO: Exterior - Fort Leonard Wood Main Entrance DOYLE (voice over): Fort Leonard Wood is home to fifteen basic training companies, as well as training battalions for military police and the chemical corps. Many of the soldiers stationed here are either in training or are the trainers themselves. CUT TO: Interview - SFC Antoine Johnson DOYLE (voice over): Drill Sergeant Antoine Johnson was his senior drill sergeant. JOHNSON: Nothing really made Private Hernandez stand out from the other soldiers in his platoon other than his excellent physical training ability. I believe that he was well on his way to maxing out his PT score on the Basic Physical Fitness Test at the end of the cycle. CUT TO: Stock footage - Basic trainees doing push-ups DOYLE (voice over): After about seven weeks of training, recruits go through what is known as the Basic Physical Fitness Test. The Army requires that their soldiers be proficient in push-ups, sit-ups, and a two-mile run. The service maintains a graduated scale for scoring these events, and to pass basic training, a recruit must score at least 50 points in each event. CUT TO: Stock footage - Basic trainees doing sit-ups DOYLE (voice over): Hernandez was on track to score 100 points in each event; known as "maxing out" in the Army vernacular. JOHNSON (voice over): He was always working on PT. Always. CUT TO: Stock footage - Basic trainees running JOHNSON (voice over): On certain days of the week, we do what are called ability group runs, where we split the company into four groups based on how well they run. CUT TO: Interview - SFC Johnson JOHNSON: Private Hernandez was in the Alpha group, the fastest and best runners in the company. DOYLE: Was he up front? JOHNSON (smiling): Not always, but he tended to lead Alpha on occasion. CUT TO: Official photo of PVT Jeremy Hernandez. Slow camera zoom towards Hernandez' face. DOYLE (voice over): Jeremy progressed through the difficult training fairly well until the sixth week of training started. JOHNSON (voice over): That morning in early July, he just fell off the pack with Alpha group. He struggled to keep up and the First Sergeant was almost pushing him along. CUT TO: Exterior - Training barracks DOYLE (voice over): Hernandez felt groggy for the rest of the training day, and chose to put in for sick call the next morning. JOHNSON (voice over): And I can remember; I'll never forget seeing him in formation the next morning, in his uniform, which looked positively big on him, where before it had fit him well. CUT TO: Exterior - Consolidated Troop Medical Center DOYLE (approaching the camera): Hernandez was taken here, to the Consolidated Troop Medical Center, or CTMC, for sick call treatment. Captain John Scott was on duty. CUT TO: Interview - CPT John Scott DOYLE (off camera): What did Jeremy Hernandez look like when he came in? SCOTT: He looked a little pale in addition to being in a uniform that looked like it belonged to someone else. DOYLE (off camera): What did you do? SCOTT: We tested for mononucleosis based on the form which he'd submitted to us, which indicated a groggy feeling and a difficulty running. When our tests came back negative, we started going through the list when it dawned on me about the uniform. CUT TO: Picture of General Leonard Wood Hospital DOYLE (voice over): Captain Scott's fears were soon confirmed when Private Hernandez was transferred to the post's main hospital: Jeremy Hernandez had Gender Biomorphism. CUT TO: Interview - CPT Scott SCOTT: And I just said to myself, 'I don't believe it!' I'd never run across GB during my time here in the service. DOYLE (voice over): In fact, no one had. CUT TO: Pentagon file room - clerk opening a file cabinet DOYLE (voice over): According to Pentagon records, while there are roughly 31 women serving that are known to the Army to have been former men affected by GB, almost half of that number being cadets at West Point, in each case, the transformation occurred prior to their decision to enlist or accept a commission. CUT TO: Picture of Hernandez in hospital bed DOYLE (voice over): Jeremy Hernandez was the first to deal with Gender Biomorphism while in the service, and more specifically, during basic training. SCOTT (voice over): Private Hernandez stayed in the hospital for three or four more days. CUT TO: Interview - CPT Scott SCOTT: And, over that time period, I watched the gradual transformation from male to female. The most visible changes occurred overnight. I arrived the next morning to find a young woman asleep in her hospital bed, with hair just going everywhere, definitely not within Army regulations. It certainly was a change from the buzz cut he'd had when I first saw him. DOYLE (off camera): How did Private Hernandez deal with it? SCOTT: It was a strange reaction. When we first told him he had GB, he was a bit mortified, but as time went on he just kept asking when he could get back into training. He treated it as if it was just another bump in the road. He was so focused on making it through training that I don't think he realized the full impact of what was happening to him until it was finished. CUT TO: Exterior - General Leonard Wood Hospital, ground level shot outside the main lobby DOYLE (voice over): The Army wasn't quite sure what to do with the new woman. Hernandez was adamant about returning to training, while the doctors and psychologists were dead set against it from the start. CUT TO: Interview - SSG Amy Daniels DOYLE (voice over): Drill Sergeant Amy Daniels was in charge of the female wing of Hernandez' training company. DANIELS: We told her that it would be difficult to have her start training again. She'd be required to abide by the same guidelines as every other female recruit in our company. She'd have to live in the same quarters with them, shower with them, and the like. We decided that it was a bad idea, both for her safety and the safety of the other females in the company. DOYLE: But the Army did confuse the matter to some degree. DANIELS: I'm still not sure why they did so, but they issued her a complete female uniform while she was still at General Wood Hospital. CUT TO: Aerial view - Springfield, MO DOYLE (voice over): The doctors decided that the best thing to do for the time being was to send Hernandez to the Gender Reorientation Seminar in Springfield, Missouri. She donned her new uniform and had her hair cut to an acceptable military standard. FADE TO: Interview - CPT Scott SCOTT: And she attended GRS just like that, dressed as though she were on duty. DOYLE (off camera): A little different than most GRS visits, I'd take it. SCOTT: Very different. She stood out among the rest of the attendees. CUT TO: Picture of Hernandez exiting GRS DOYLE (voice over): It was here that Hernandez chose a female name for herself, Maria. It was also here that she fully realized exactly what had happened to her. FADE TO: Interview - Maria Hernandez HERNANDEZ: All that time in the hospital seemed to be a kind of blur to me. It wasn't until I started going through the classes at GRS and choosing a name for myself that it hit me, you know? I'm a girl! And it never occurred how different that makes my world. DOYLE (off camera): How did everyone else react to your uniform? HERNANDEZ: A lot of the other girls asked me why I was wearing it. They thought I was trying to look macho or something. But that's never why I joined the Army in the first place. I ended up taking the class on style anyway. CUT TO: Exterior - Army Obstacle course DOYLE (voice over): By the time Hernandez was finished with GRS, the rest of her basic training class had finished training and had graduated. Her company was in-between cycles, waiting for new trainees to arrive. She was designated as a "holdover," or a recruit who had not finished training. She was placed in a bay with several other female holdovers, many of which remembered her as Jeremy Hernandez, and had never been told what happened to him. CUT TO: Interview - Maria Hernandez HERNANDEZ: Some of them were taken aback when they realized who I was. But some of them were angry with me. They demanded that I wait until the latrine was empty to go to the bathroom or take a shower. They wouldn't let me in there while there was anyone else using the latrine. DOYLE (off camera): What did you do about it? HERNANDEZ: I asked Drill Sergeant Daniels if she could help out. CUT TO: Interview - SSG Amy Daniels DOYLE: What was the reaction when Hernandez came back to the company? DANIELS: A lot of the other women had mixed reactions. They completely cast Hernandez out. And here we were, still trying to make a decision of what to do with her. DOYLE: What did you do to help out? DANIELS: We disciplined some of the females who were being selfish towards her, but that didn't help to a great degree. The bigger problem was the harassment she received from the male holdovers. CUT TO: Interview - Maria Hernandez HERNANDEZ: And they'd say to me, you know, '(expletive deleted) like you don't belong in the Army,' or 'I knew you were a (expletive deleted), you just proved it,' and so on. CUT TO: Exterior - Training barracks DOYLE: With a new cycle about to begin and the harassment mounting, the Army chose to place Hernandez on thirty-day convalescent leave; a move that ultimately doomed her chances of completing training before high school got back underway. CUT TO: Interview - Maria Hernandez HERNANDEZ: I practically begged the battalion commander to help me stay and finish up the training but he insisted that the hospital and the colonel in charge of our training brigade had tied his hands. It was almost as if the Army was trying to just sweep me under the rug or something. DOYLE (voice over): The Army denies this claim. According to a press release... SUPERIMPOSE: Letter from the Pentagon to NBC News DOYLE (voice over): ...the Pentagon chose to remove Private Hernandez, quote, 'for her own safety, and to consider the ramifications of allowing a person afflicted with GB to continue initial entry training.' FADE TO: Exterior - Fort Leonard Wood Main Entrance DOYLE (voice over): And so it was that Maria Hernandez left Fort Leonard Wood and returned home to San Angelo, where the scene that has been played out thousands of times across the nation took place as Maria's family began to adjust to having a new daughter, and her friends began to adjust to her new gender. CUT TO: Interview - Sarah Watters WATTERS: It was almost as if he'd gone off to war and never come home. DOYLE (voice over): Sarah Watters was Jeremy Hernandez' girlfriend and prom date. WATTERS: When I first met Maria, it was like she was a whole different person. After we got to talking for a while, it became apparent that she was still largely the same old Jeremy, just in a different mindset. We talked for about three hours that first time, and towards the end, I noticed the mindset overlapping with the body in a major way. She definitely transitioned well. CUT TO: Interview - Maria Hernandez HERNANDEZ: It was exactly like the clich?d story you see in the news all the time. Boy has girlfriend, boy gets GB, boy becomes girl, girl becomes best friends with her former girlfriend. That's exactly what happened here. Sarah and I still do everything together, but now it's mostly shopping and cheerleading and, yes, we talk about boys. CUT TO: Picture - Side by side, Hernandez as a football player, Hernandez as a cheerleader DOYLE (voice over): In fact, Hernandez went from playing on the football team in his junior year, to being a cheerleader on those same sidelines for her senior year. HERNANDEZ (voice over): It's another clich?, I know. But my whole life isn't, I swear! (laugh) CUT TO: Interview - Maria Hernandez DOYLE (off camera): You seem to have transitioned well. HERNANDEZ: I think being in training at the time had a little bit to do with that. It gave me something completely different to focus on. It was like I was aware of what was happening to me, but it just didn't seem as important. Once I got to GRS and came to a full realization, it was a shock, but I didn't dismiss myself as a potential 20 percenter at that point. FADE TO: GRAPHIC - Pie chart DOYLE (voice over): According to the Center for Disease Control, a trend has developed among those affected by GB. While approximately 75 percent eventually fit in perfectly with their new gender roles, most with no real preference of one over the other, around 20 percent report a distinct preference for being female. These new females often tend to take feminine roles to the extreme. The remaining 5 percent do not adapt well to their physical changes, in essence, becoming a man trapped in a woman's body. FADE TO: Interview - Maria Hernandez HERNANDEZ: I never felt like I was going to be in that range. From the time I found out I had GB, I sort of always considered from what I knew that I'd probably get used to being a woman. DOYLE (off camera): How did everyone else react to you? HERNANDEZ: My parents took some time to fully come to terms, especially my father, since he lost his only son. My older sister helped me out a lot - in fact, I ended up with hand-me-downs for the first time! She and I are a lot closer now. DOYLE (off camera): Your male friends? HERNANDEZ: Most of them were reasonable. GB was something we all worried about from time to time. We really had decided previously that if one of us was to be affected by it, we'd treat them with understanding, and for the most part, people did. I'm very lucky that I haven't experienced the intolerance in school that so many others have. I think the only thing was that my friend Bill made a smug remark that I was the only person who was ever turned into a (expletive deleted) by the Army. (Laughs) I slapped him. (Laughs) DOYLE (off camera): But the Army atmosphere... HERNANDEZ: That was a little bit different, yes. But regardless, I still wanted to continue. I can deal with jerks. CUT TO: Exterior - San Angelo High School DOYLE (walking towards camera): At about the same time Maria Hernandez was cheering at her first football game, the Army delivered their decision regarding her case. They determined that a medical discharge was in order: for Jeremy Hernandez. CUT TO: Interview: CPT Scott DOYLE (off camera): How was this course of action determined? SCOTT: It was almost more administrative than anything else. It was determined that Jeremy Hernandez' enlistment could not continue given his current medical condition. It was mostly saying that Maria Hernandez was a separate entity, which, by court ruling, isn't true. CUT TO: Graphic - Map of the United States DOYLE (voice over): There have been several court rulings pertaining to the legal status of those with Gender Biomorphism. GRAPHIC - Highlight California DOYLE (voice over): The first such case came just after the first cases began appearing, in the state of California. A judge ruled that a person who has completed a GB transformation is legally a female. GRAPHIC - Highlight Arkansas DOYLE (voice over): An Arkansas court ruled that a Little Rock female charged with shoplifting in an incident that occurred prior to her transformation was legally liable for her actions. This established that the transformee was legally the same person. GRAPHIC - Highlight Oklahoma DOYLE (voice over): In Oklahoma, a court ruled that a transformed male who had fallen into that 5 percent area of non-self-acceptance could not be legally recognized as a male. GRAPHIC - Highlight New York DOYLE (voice over): And in New York, a judge ruled that young women affected by GB could participate in interscholastic sports for women. CUT TO: Interview - Teresa Banks DOYLE (voice over): Hernandez contacted the Gender Biomorphism Rights Foundation in Los Angeles. GBRF, on Hernandez' behalf, filed a lawsuit against the US Government. Teresa Banks is the Foundation's lead attorney. BANKS: What the government did was wrong. Maria Hernandez cannot be forced to re-enlist and have to go through basic training all over again. Time and time again, the Army has accepted GB women into their ranks without medical disqualifications of any kind. It appears the only problem that Maria has is that she happened to be in the Army when the effects of GB took hold of her. This is the Army's HIV policy in reverse - HIV is a cause for medical disqualification for enlistment, but it is not an immediate cause for discharge of those who are already enlisted. If those other women are suitable for duty, so is Private Hernandez. She had not chosen a combat-related job skill upon her initial enlistment as Jeremy Hernandez. There should have been no problem with her returning to finish basic training. CUT TO: GRAPHIC - Letter from Army Medical Corps DOYLE (voice over): Senior Army officials declined Dateline's request for an interview. However, in a letter to Dateline producers, the Army insists that they made the right decision, citing physiological differences between males and females that would necessitate Hernandez' restart of basic training from the beginning. It further indicates that the publicity caused by her case is only damaging her chances of being able to restart training without problems from other trainees having heard of who she is. 'Although the Army takes every step possible to protect our trainees from abuse, it is difficult to monitor them 24 hours a day and guarantee that nothing will happen in an explosive atmosphere,' reads the letter. CUT TO: Interview - Maria Hernandez DOYLE (voice over): Hernandez freely admits that the publicity surrounding her case will make things difficult for her in training if the Foundation wins the case. But she insists that the Army is wrong about her needing to go through training again. HERNANDEZ: I've still been doing PT ever since I left Missouri, and if I were given the test today, I would max out in every event on the women's scale, and I would even pass the test against the men's scale. I don't need to learn how to shoot a rifle again, and I don't need to go through the rest of the training again. Basic training is a strain on any soldier. Why should I be forced to go back through it all again? CUT TO: Stock footage - John Kerry rally DOYLE (voice over): The issue has even been garnering the attention of national politicians. Senator John Kerry, the Democrats' presumptive presidential nominee, mentioned Hernandez' case during a recent campaign rally in Georgia. CUT TO: Kerry speech KERRY: The Army is essentially excluding this young woman from serving her country because of something that happened that was completely out of her control. When I'm President, we're not only going to turn the tide against GB, we're also going to make sure that those who have been affected are not discriminated against in any fashion. CUT TO: Exterior - University of North Texas DOYLE (voice over): For now, Maria Hernandez is moving on with her life. She is now a freshman at the University of North Texas in Denton. She is a member of the freshman cheerleading team, and is very active among the college's social scene. CUT TO: Exterior - Interview with Maria Hernandez at UNT DOYLE (voice over): She is also a part of her own community service effort. HERNANDEZ: Along with Soledad Torres from Miami, I maintain and operate a website at GBLatina.com, which is a community for Latinas like us. We have everything from help for those who have recently transformed to makeup and hairstyling tips. It's been heart-warming to hear stories from Latinas all over the country who have found help through our site. We even have a columnist who is a five-percenter, helping others who feel trapped in their new bodies. DOYLE (off camera): But that's not all you're doing. HERNANDEZ: I'm also working with several people across the country to set up state and national beauty pageants just for GB women. We're hoping to change the national perception that GB women are awkward tomboy freaks by offering a positive, feminine competition for them to help enhance their own self-image and assist in their scholarship. DOYLE (off camera): What about the Army? HERNANDEZ: I haven't decided what I want to do. Whether or not I win the case, I may or may not decide to return or re-enlist. This case is no longer about me. It's about the freedom to continue living our lives without unnecessary restrictions. It's a fight that's worth fighting for, and I'll be here to fight it. FADE TO: Interior - Dateline Set PAULEY: We continue our look at Gender Biomorphism tonight with a profile of two athletes who share a common bond. They play the same sport and they were affected by the same affliction - yet they are two distinctly different people. Here is Samantha Peterson with the story of two young girls who have taken different paths. FADE TO: Headline Graphic. "On Thin Ice?" Story by: Samantha Peterson Produced by: Michael Dolan FADE TO: Interior - Mariucci Arena, hockey practice PETERSON (voice over): Children growing up playing hockey in the Land of Ten-Thousand Lakes dream of one-day playing here, at Mariucci Arena, home of the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers. CUT TO: Picture - Rob Tallan PETERSON (voice over): Rob Tallan was one of those children. He started playing hockey at age four, and was always at the rink in his hometown of Eden Prairie, Minnesota when he had the time. CUT TO: Exterior - St. Joseph's prep school PETERSON (voice over): He was good enough to play at St. Joseph's, one of the state's most exclusive prep schools, known for turning out players who excelled at the next level. And soon enough, during his senior year, he got the call he'd been waiting for his whole life; he was going to be a Golden Gopher. FADE TO: Black PETERSON (voice over): Then, his life turned upside-down. His doctor uttered two little letters: GB. FADE TO: Interview - Suzanne Tallan TALLAN: (crying) I really thought it was over. I thought I'd never be able to play again. It felt like I had this debilitating disease. PETERSON (voice over): Just days before his seventeenth birthday, Rob Tallan was diagnosed with Gender Biomorphism. He was pulled out of classes almost immediately and enrolled in Gender Reorientation Seminar in nearby St. Cloud. CUT TO: Interview - Greg Tallan PETERSON (voice over): Rob's father, Greg, describes what his only child was going through. GREG TALLAN: He still looked like himself when I brought him there to GRS. Deep down, I could tell that he was just devastated. Absolutely devastated. There was no cheering him up. Truth be told, I was feeling almost the same way, but I was more concerned about him than I was about myself. CUT TO: Exterior - St. Joseph's prep school gates PETERSON (approaching camera): Greg Tallan had been a single dad for nearly sixteen years. His wife, Sarah, was killed in a car accident when Rob was only 9 months old. Greg was left to raise Rob on his own - not an easy task for either of them. The one outlet that both would find to be a great diversion from their difficult life was hockey. Greg Tallan had been a tremendous hockey player himself, even playing three games in the National Hockey League during his career. CUT TO: Interview - Suzanne Tallan TALLAN: I felt so bad for my father at the time. I think that complicated things quite a bit. PETERSON (off camera): Tell us a little bit more about your dad. TALLAN: He means the world to me, and I'm everything for him. He runs a hockey equipment shop in Eden Prairie and really helped raise me in the game. I was a chip off the old block, so to speak, which made it all the more difficult when we found out what was happening to me. He wasn't quite sure how to raise a girl much as I wasn't really sure how to be one. PETERSON: Your GRS experience was rather difficult, I understand. TALLAN: I was very resistant to the whole thing when I first got there. I had to be sedated on the first night. I changed on the second night I was there, that is, the transformation completed itself. I was completely despondent all the next day and didn't go to any of the required classes - I just stayed in my bed and cried all day while the counselors tried to console me and get me going. PETERSON: Was it around that time that you realized that something was wrong? TALLAN: They'd told us on the first day that most of us would grow to accept who we'd become. That was little solace for me, but I at least figured that it'd happen to me eventually. It wasn't until the third day I was there, when I saw two of the girls that I'd come in with talking about how they could put their past experience as males to work in order to help them get boys that I knew I wasn't going to be able to fully accept being female. When I'd first met them, both of them were distraught at the thought of becoming women, and now they were talking about wearing miniskirts and dating boys. (pause) I spent three weeks at GRS, much longer than most people. Eventually they realized that I was going to be a man trapped in a woman's body, and that there wasn't much they could to do change that. CUT TO: Exterior - St. Joseph's prep school PETERSON (voice over): So Tallan, still using her male name, left GRS and returned to St. Joseph's. She was moved out of the boys' dorms and into the girls' dorms - and given a very special roommate. CUT TO: Interview - Molly Kearns KEARNS: She was depressed all the time and just didn't want to have anything to do with me. PETERSON (voice over): Molly Kearns knew what Tallan was going through. Three years earlier, she had been Eric Kearns, a 14-year-old kid who loved to play hockey from Ann Arbor, Michigan. CUT TO: Picture - Side by side, Eric Kearns posing in hockey attire, Molly Kearns in her St. Joseph's school uniform PETERSON (voice over): Kearns was diagnosed with GB. But her experience at GRS was completely different from that of Rob Tallan. KEARNS (voice over): At first I was dreading what I knew was going to happen to me. Just after the transformation finished, though, I was just this whole different person. FADE TO: Interview - Molly Kearns KEARNS: I knew I was going to enjoy being a girl, and I absolutely do to this day. If they found a way to reverse GB, I don't think I'd want to go back. PETERSON (voice over): Molly Kearns is what would be referred to as a "twenty-percenter," or a GB female who is ultimately very happy with her transformation. KEARNS: I absolutely love it. I think they wrote that song "I Enjoy Being A Girl" about me. (laughs) CUT TO: St. Joseph's rink - women's practice PETERSON (voice over): Kearns' parents were concerned about Molly being able to continue playing hockey in Michigan. Prior to the groundbreaking New York case in which track standout Stephanie Lind won the right to participate in interscholastic athletics as a woman, GB females either stopped participating altogether, or had continued with no argument. In order to avoid the former and to make sure the latter occurred, they sent their new daughter to St. Joseph's, where no one knew of her past. CUT TO: Interview - Molly Kearns KEARNS: I played for St. Joseph's for two years without anyone finding out that I'd previously been a boy. After the Lind case, however, I felt confident enough to let the administration know. PETERSON (off camera): What was their reaction? KEARNS: They were disappointed that we hadn't been forthcoming about it, but they were very understanding. They said they didn't know if what their reaction would have been if they'd known when I applied, but since my work at the school had been exceptional and in light of the Lind case, they dismissed it and allowed me to continue playing. PETERSON (off camera): Did you tell any of your friends at St. Joseph's? KEARNS: No. After I started working with Rob Tallan, I think there were a few friends that might have suspected it but they didn't say anything to me. I guess most of them are probably finding out for the first time now if they're watching. I'm sure they won't mind. PETERSON: So you integrated pretty well into St. Joseph's as a girl? KEARNS: Absolutely. As far as anyone was concerned, I was the genuine article. CUT TO: Interview - Suzanne Tallan PETERSON (voice over): Tallan was not the same way. TALLAN: I felt so foolish wearing the blouse and skirt to class like all the other girls. All of the boys, even the ones who I'd played hockey with, either intentionally ignored me or were jerks. All of the girls, except for Molly, would turn their backs on me when I was around. I felt like a loner. PETERSON (voice over): Unlike Molly Kearns, Tallan was known amongst the students at St. Joseph's prior to her transformation. PETERSON: How did you cope? TALLAN: I tried to bury myself in hockey. I figured that if I just went to the rink and practiced every day, I would forget what happened to me. CUT TO: St. Joseph's rink - women's game PETERSON (voice over): Tallan found it difficult to adjust to the women's game. She was called for several penalties in her first few games because her rough, physical style that she had been used to as a man did not work in the women's game, where body checking is not allowed. TALLAN (voice over): I just kept getting called for checking, which is something that the boys are allowed to do. I understood fairly quickly, but I guess old habits die hard. Those first few road games helped me out a lot, though. CUT TO: Interview - Suzanne Tallan TALLAN: Some of the girls on the other team would say hello to me and were very understanding. Molly really helped me to adjust, too. But I think those penalties spurred me into a kind of forced acceptance of who I had become. Not only did I have to change my game, I realized when the announcer announced the penalty to "Rob Tallan" that it was time that I gave myself a name that fit who I now was. PETERSON (off camera): How difficult was it? TALLAN: Pretty hard. Molly and I worked for a couple of weeks before we found one that fit. It was like naming a baby, I guess. For a while I thought I was going to explode because I didn't like attaching any girls name to myself. I finally settled on Suzanne Elizabeth. PETERSON (off camera): Any significance to that name? TALLAN: Suzanne just sounded right. Elizabeth was my grandmother's name. I didn't want to accept a new name but I didn't feel like I had a choice, so I went with something I knew I could live with and eventually accept. PETERSON (off camera): Have you accepted it yet? TALLAN: (long pause) I answer to it. Some days I wish I'd chosen a different name when someone tries to call me "Suzie." They usually only do that once. CUT TO: Exterior - University of Minnesota PETERSON (voice over): Suzanne Tallan's big concern, however, was for her chances of playing hockey at Minnesota. It was still her big dream, even if the circumstances had changed. TALLAN (voice over): So one day, I got a phone call from the U. They'd heard about what had happened to me. CUT TO: Interior - Ridder Arena, hockey practice TALLAN (voice over): And they told me that they wanted to see me play, to see if my style fit the women's game the way they hoped it would. They came and watched me play, and I was on my best behavior for a change. They were impressed and they offered me a scholarship again. PETERSON (voice over): So now Suzanne Tallan was still going to be able to live out her dream, only in a different manner than she'd imagined. Instead of playing at Mariucci Arena, she would play at Ridder Arena, the home of the Gophers' women's team. FADE TO: Interview - Suzanne Tallan TALLAN: It's still difficult. Every morning I wake up and wish I were a man again. PETERSON (off camera): How has that affected your social life? TALLAN: I'm friends with the whole team, which is good. I haven't been made to feel unwelcome, and we're a very close knit group. I still kinda feel like an outsider, though. One time, one of the girls set me up on a date with a guy, and it made me exceptionally uneasy. PETERSON (off camera): How so? TALLAN: They say that GB doesn't change your sexual orientation, so I went from being a straight man to a straight woman. I find myself attracted to men and not women, but you have to understand that it is a difficult feeling when you also feel as though you are a man in a woman's body. I felt sorry for the poor guy as I sat there wrestling with all of this in my mind. CUT TO: Interview - Greg Tallan PETERSON (voice over): It hasn't been easy for Dad, either. GREG TALLAN: It's been difficult, believe me. I still find myself shocked to accidentally walk in on my child in the bathroom and find her wearing a bra. Sometimes I feel like it's my fault that she has had so many problems making the transition, since I never gave Rob an opportunity to have a strong female presence in his life after his mother died. I just keep wondering if that might by why she struggles today. FADE TO: Interview - Molly Kearns PETERSON (voice over): Molly Kearns is also still playing hockey, but at a lower level. She attends St. Benedict's, an all-women's school in central Minnesota, and plays in Division III for the Blazers. KEARNS: We still talk quite a bit, Suzanne and I do. I'll always be there for her. PETERSON (off camera): Your differences don't cause many problems? KEARNS: We just accept that she'll never understand why I don't find being a woman to be a living hell, and I'll never understand what's not to like about being a woman. I pray for her everyday. She was not as fortunate as myself to make a smooth transition, and in many respects she may never fully transition. Fortunately, we do have a shared experience and a shared love of the game that helps keep us together, and I think we make each other better people. CUT TO: Video - Minnesota women's national championship on-ice celebration PETERSON (voice over): For Suzanne Tallan, her hard work has already paid off. She played a part in the 2003 National Championship victory for the Golden Gophers, scoring a goal in the championship game as Minnesota defeated Harvard for the big win. TALLAN (voice over): Hard to describe how it feels to win it all, but afterwards, the reality kinda sank in for me. As a woman, there's not really much future left for me in the game after I graduate. No minor leagues, no chance at the NHL. Joy and frustration all at the same time; I don't know how to explain it. FADE TO: Interior - St. Joseph's prep school, empty hallway PETERSON (voice over): Two women, making their way in college life, separated by so much, but bonded together by simple happenstance. SUZANNE TALLAN (voice over): If I can't be a man, I just wish I could be a woman. KEARNS (voice over): Suzanne is one in a million, and just such a wonderful friend.
