The Bikini (Follow-Up)
By Margaret Jeanette
Martha arrived home still surprised at how well Dave -- aka
Virginia -- had taken to being put in dresses. She wondered where
Trudy had found him. She didn't believe men like that existed.
When she pulled into her driveway she saw Hank and Ralph had done
their jobs and the farm was on schedule. The chores had all been
done as should be.
She went in and unpacked her clothes. She went and checked the
refrigerator and found a left-over piece of chicken there, grabbed
it for a snack, and went to see what mail had arrived while she was
at the all-girl long week-end. There was nothing important there so
she went to check out the barn.
In the barn everything was as it was supposed to be. She saw the
two hired hands had kept busy keeping everything in order.
Having nothing important to do she decided to go visit Mary
Simons, who lived three quarters of a mile down the road. The
Simons' hired hand lived with Hank and Ralph in the farm house that
was between their two farms. She had bought that farm three years
ago for the acreage and now had over nine hundred acres of farm.
The Simons had a four hundred some acre farm and were doing very
well on it.
She had arrived and Mary was glad to see her. They were sitting
at the kitchen table talking when she saw Daniel, Mary's son, come
and check something in the oven. He was wearing a cobbler apron and
Martha thought he looked so cute in it. She didn't say anything but
her mind was working. She knew Daniel was two years older than she
was and that he wasn't a physical hunk.
She asked Mary about Daniel and Mary told her Daniel wasn't
strong enough to work in the fields. Harold, her husband, took him
out there once a year to see if he could hack he work, but he never
seemed to make it. He was such a good help around the house,
though, helping with the cleaning and cooking. She said they'd been
after him to go into town to the dances and meet a young girl but
he was too shy to go. Martha asked if he would make a good wife and
Mary laughed and said he probably would.
Mary said he kept all of their records on their computer so he
was productive to the farming operation that way. Also with all of
his help it gave her time for her volunteer work.
Martha asked her if she thought he could come and clean her
house, since she didn't get at it as she should what with her work
in the fields. Mary said it would give him a chance to earn some
money and get out of the house a bit.
When he came in the kitchen and started to peel potatoes for
supper Mary asked Martha if she wanted to stay for supper and she
agreed. Mary told Daniel that there would be one more for supper
and he acknowledged her.
Soon he came in with two packages of frozen corn on the cob and
put them in a pan of water to start a bit later to cook. When he
had finished Martha proposed to him that maybe he could come and
clean her house a couple of days a week. He agreed to come tomorrow
afternoon to start.
At supper Martha suggested he come with her after supper so she
could show him where all of the cleaning supplies were. He agreed
and she was happy. She and Mary talked about farming problems
while Daniel did the dishes from supper. Martha made note how he
was so submissive.
After he finished the dishes Martha made her good byes to Mary
thanking her for the delicious supper. Mary said she had to thank
Daniel as he had made all of it. Martha thanked him and he blushed,
and thanked her for the compliment.
He rode with her to her house and she showed him where everything
was. When she showed him where the apron hung on back of the pantry
door she said that one was dirty and that there would be a new
clean one hanging there tomorrow. When she had shown him where
everything was they sat at the table with cans of soda pop.
"If you find you need anything to do a proper job of cleaning
just let me know and I'll get it. Your mother and I were talking
and we agreed you would make a great bride for someone."
He blushed and said, "I know mom would like to see me marry but
I am afraid to ask any woman out. I am happy with how things are
but I know both mom and dad would like to see me going out with
others but I am not that inclined to socialize."
"Well, I think you are very nice. You deserve someone nice in
return. You deserve someone who will take care of you and provide
you an outlet for your talents."
"I'm afraid I don't have much in the line of talents. In school
I wasn't into sports and I just got by in classes with the grades.
I wasn't into any of the clubs and things."
"You are forgetting you have a talent for cleaning and cooking.
To me those are important talents. I can cook but only the
essential things and I am not a cleaner although I do clean when
time permits. Now, I am prepared to pay you twenty-five dollars an
afternoon. If you make supper for the four of us, me, Hank, Ralph
and yourself, then I'll pay you thirty-five dollars. If you think
you need more let me know what you would ask and I'll give it
serious consideration."
"I think that's very generous. I can start tomorrow. I can come
for the full day if you like."
"No, in the morning I think your mom can use you to help her. You
have to continue to help her so she has time to do her
volunteering. You can come here whatever afternoons you can and
clean and straighten things out."
"Whatever you say. I will have your house looking spotless. I
have a question for you. Do you really like to work in the fields
rather than work in the house?"
"Yes, I do. I helped my father on his farm and I know what I'm
doing out there and I enjoy it. I never did much in the house when
I was growing up as my mother took care of that. Dad said I was
stronger than my brother and he hated farm work. I bought this farm
when it was six hundred acres and got the chance to buy the farm
next door. We keep the young stock in the barn there and use the
machine shed for storage. The house you know is where Hank, Ralph
and Luke your hired hand live. It works out great for everyone
involved."
He said he had to go and she offered to drive him home. He said
he would rather walk, that it was good exercise and not that far.
On impulse she grabbed him thanked him and gave him a kiss on his
cheek.
He was euphoric walking home, thinking how she was the only woman
other than his mother to have ever kissed him.
The next morning Martha ran into town. She stopped at the town's
leading department store and found just what she was looking for.
She got two extra long white aprons with lace trim. They had a lace
trimmed ruffle on the bib and around the bottom. She was passing
through the lingerie section when she saw panties on sale. She
picked out eight pair of the fanciest laciest panties she could
find in what size she thought would fit him. She felt pretty good
about such a find on sale. She picked up two bras for herself that
were on sale. They were plain white ones but would give a lot of
use.
She was back in time to fix a lunch for the three of them. Hank
and Ralph saw she was in a very good mood. She said this afternoon
she was going to start cutting first crop hay and that Hank could
cut in the field across the road and she was going to do the lower
field. She told Ralph to hook up the windrow rake to start putting
what she cut in wind rows. They both said it sounded good to them.
They were finished eating when Daniel arrived. Martha asked him
if he could do up the dishes so she could get going. He agreed and
she reminded him to wear an apron. He put on one of the aprons she
had gotten and she saw it came to about a half inch from the floor.
With the full skirt it looked like he was wearing a white dress.
She smiled to herself and went to start working.
She finished cutting the field sooner than she thought, and came
into the house and was amazed at how clean the kitchen was. She saw
Daniel cooking supper and liked what she saw. She asked him what he
was making for supper and he told her. She told him the kitchen
looked marvelous and he apologized that it was the only room he had
gotten done. She told him not to worry about it, that he had done
such a good job she didn't care that it was the only room he had
done.
At supper Hank and Ralph raved over how good the meal was. Martha
told them Danny had made it. They said if he kept cooking they were
going to have to go on a diet. Everyone was in a good mood because
a lot of work had been done that day. All they had left was the
milking of the cows. Hank and Ralph went out to milk them.
Martha told him she would help him with the dishes. She asked if
he wanted to wash or dry. He said he would wash, then he could wipe
the table and stove top.
As they did the dishes Martha looked at how feminine he looked in
the apron. With his hair styled he could easily pass as a woman.
She watched him as he washed the dishes and couldn't help but think
how it would be if she was married to him. He wouldn't be the worst
she could do, that was for sure.
They finished up and he was ready to go. Martha asked him if he
wanted to get paid daily or weekly or what. He said it didn't make
any difference to him. She said she would pay him at the end of the
week. She gave him a kiss on the cheek as he was leaving.
On the walk home he thought how she wasn't the worst person in
the world. He was really getting to like her. She didn't seem to be
the distant person he always thought she was. He thought about how
his stomach fluttered when she kissed him. This was a feeling that
was completely new to him. He was very happy.
The next day he tackled the living room. When Martha saw it she
praised how nice it looked. He blushed at her remarks. He left her
to check supper. She was really happy with how he was doing his
job.
At supper he had made meat loaf. Hank said he normally didn't
care for meat loaf but this was great. It tasted different from any
he had ever eaten before. Martha asked him what he all put in it.
He told them he used ground beef, eggs, oatmeal, milk, ground pork
and some seasoning. They all agreed it was delicious. Hank said he
would take whatever was left over for a before bed time snack.
As they were doing dishes Martha told him that she didn't know
what she would do without him. He felt proud of how she was
treating him. He was starting to feel a closeness to her that he
had never felt toward any female before. He was starting to like
her a lot.
He told her tomorrow he would lightly clean the kitchen and
living room and start on her bedroom. She said she would like that.
She told him he looked so natural in the apron and he blushed. She
left for a minute and quickly returned.
When it was time for him to leave she grabbed him and gave him a
kiss on the lips. She then said it didn't feel right, and before he
knew it he was wearing a light pink lipstick. She kissed him again
telling him that felt better. She handed him the lipstick and told
him he should wear it.
On the way home he wondered about his feelings for Martha. He
knew she wasn't ugly and actually kind of pretty in a way. He kept
puckering up his lips and listening to the smack they made. He
liked the feel of the lipstick.
The next day when he arrived, Martha saw he had lipstick on. She
didn't say anything about it but smiled to herself. She left to
start the baling of the hay.
That night for supper he had made a stuffed roasted chicken.
Everyone loved it. Ralph said he had first choice if there was any
left over. Martha was glad neither of them said anything about
Daniel wearing lipstick.
Ralph put his leftover chicken in the refrigerator and he and
Hank went to start the milking. Martha and Daniel started dishes.
They chatted about all sorts of things. When the dishes were done
she said they should check her bedroom to see how it looked.
Her bedroom was spotless and she told him he had done a great job
on it. Then she grabbed a bag off of her dresser and handed it to
him. She told him it was a thank you gift for him. She said he
should wear them all of the time. She took him in her arms and
kissed him deeply on the lips. He kissed her back. It was a long
kiss and both of them were surprised at that.
He left and was feeling light headed. Things were going so fast.
He knew Martha liked him a lot and he liked her a lot but he
wondered where all of this was leading. He hoped things would work
out between them but he knew he would never be able to ask her to
marry him.
At home Daniel's mother asked him what was in the bag. He told
her it was a present from Martha and headed to his bedroom. In the
bedroom he looked in the bag. He saw the panties and saw that they
were all soft and very lacy. He wondered why Martha would want him
to wear women's panties, then decided to ask her tomorrow.
He put on a pair of panties to see how they felt. They felt great
and he wondered why. He left them on and went to take a shower.
When he came out of the shower he wrapped a towel around himself so
no one would see the panties. They felt so great that he didn't
want to take them off. He left them on under his pajama bottoms.
The next morning he got up and changed panties, putting the old
ones in the wash. After breakfast his mother said he could do the
laundry. He was doing it and when he was hanging it up on the
clothesline he smiled as he hung the panties up.
When he got into the house his mother said, "I was watching you
as you hung up the wash. Where did those blue panties come from? I
have never seen any like that before."
"They were a present from Martha. She gave me some and told me I
should wear them. I don't know why she did but she did."
"Are you wearing panties now?"
"Yes, do you want me to take them off?"
"How do they feel? Are you comfortable in them?"
"Oh yes, they feel so nice. They are so soft and feel warm to
me."
"I noticed the other night you were wearing lipstick and now the
panties. I am going to have to have a talk with her. If they feel
that good to you, you might as well keep them on."
When he arrived at Martha's she knew he was wearing the panties
by the way he was blushing. She saw the lipstick on his lips and
wondered what she should do next. She left to work in the fields
and he started cleaning.
He was cleaning in her computer room and saw it was a mess. He
started straightening the papers on her computer desk and decided
to sort them into two piles, incoming cash and bills to be paid. He
ended up with three piles as some of the things he couldn't decide
what they were for.
He started a pork roast in the slow cooker after he had seasoned
it. He saw some frozen unbaked turnovers in the freezer and decided
to bake them off. He was really enjoying himself as he baked them.
When they were done he set them to cool before frosting them.
When Martha came in she immediately said how nice it smelled in
the kitchen. Daniel took her into the computer room and showed her
how he had sorted her papers. She told him she hated having to keep
track of everything but it was a necessary evil. He volunteered to
try to do it for her and she said she would keep that in mind.
That night supper was delicious and when Daniel said there was
dessert all three of them said they could hardly wait for it. When
they were eating the turnovers they all raved at how good they
were. Martha said she could never make anything that good. Hank and
Ralph both laughed and agreed that the cooking had sure improved.
As they were doing dishes Martha told him she was really glad he
was there to do the cleaning and cooking. She told him he was a
life saver in those departments. When she said that he would make
a fine bride she noticed he blushed. She wondered how he would look
in a dress and knew neither of the two she had would fit him. It
was Friday so she paid him for the three days work.
"Here is a hundred fifty dollars. I know it is more than we
agreed on but think of the extra as a bonus for the great work you
are doing. I really like you and you are making this house look
like a showplace. Tomorrow, you don't have to clean but we don't do
much in the afternoon, so why don't you stop and we'll enjoy one of
your turnovers and talk."
She gave him a kiss and he left. When he arrived home he was
surprised to see his mother leaving, right away.
Martha saw the headlights in the driveway and wondered who was
coming to visit. She wasn't really surprised when it was Mary
Simons.
Mary immediately commented on how nice the kitchen looked and
they sat down at the table.
Mary didn't waste any time starting, "I just want to know where
you are going with my son. I see him come home wearing lipstick and
today I saw him hang up some lacy panties that he said he got from
you. What are your plans for him? Why are you doing that to him?"
"Well, it is simple. I am thinking that I need someone to keep
this house and do the cooking. Daniel is a very sweet boy but he is
more like a woman than he is like a man. The way I feel is that I
would like to make him my bride."
"You mean get married to him?"
"Yes, but did you notice I said my bride not groom. He is more
like a wife than a husband."
"I heard you. This is a complete shock to me. I have often
thought he was more feminine than masculine but I never thought
about dressing him as a woman. It isn't the worse thing that could
happen to him. But I don't want him harmed in any way."
"I would never do anything to harm him. I have left everything up
to him so far. You must believe me when I say is all I wanted to
see is if he would possibly go along with being my wife."
"Do you love him?"
"I think I do. It is hard to describe my feelings for him. I know
he is a very sweet man and that he is kind and cares about people
but I don't know for sure exactly how he feels about me."
"I think he is in love with you. He and I have had a little talk
and he didn't say it but I feel he is really in love with you. If
I understand you it seems you want him in a dress. Is that right?"
"Like I said, I see him as my bride and a bride wears a dress. He
would really make a good looking woman with his slim build and his
cute face. I never wore a lot of make up but he would look great in
it. His hair is long enough so it could be done up in a feminine
style without too much trouble."
"I have told him a couple of times to get it cut but he just
doesn't listen to me. I think this can work out. I have to talk to
him and make sure he is willing to do this. If he is willing then
I see no problem with it."
"What about your husband? What is he going to say about it?"
"He has said a lot of times that Daniel is more like a girl than
a boy. I think it's because Daniel never was physically strong
enough to do the farm work and is helping me around the house so
much. He will not be a problem."
"I'm glad you came over. I feel a lot better about things. How do
you feel about losing a son and gaining a daughter?"
"You know, I like it. It is like making it official. Now, I have
to go and have a long talk with Daniel."
"I think we should call him Dani, you know D-A-N-I, spelled with
an I."
"You are right. I am going to have that talk with him now."
Mary left and when she got home she called Daniel to have that
talk with him. He came in and could tell by the stern look on her
face his mother had something serious to talk to him about. He sat
down in a chair opposite her at the table.
"I was just over at Martha's and I had a good talk with her about
you and what she has done to you so far."
His face got long, sensing she was going to tell him he was no
longer to go over there to cook and clean.
"We talked about what she was looking for and how she saw you.
She didn't waste any words and we have come to an agreement. She
sees you as a possible bride for her. Do you know that that means?"
"I think so. She will marry me and I will do the cooking and
cleaning."
"There is more to it than that. She expects you to look like a
wife at all times. That means you would have to wear a dress and
all that goes with it. Do you think you can do that?"
"I am not really sure. Are you sure that is what she wants?"
"Yes. I am sure. If you want to try it I can do your hair now."
She started on his hair and told him she had some older dresses
that were too good to throw out that no longer fit her but would
probably fit him. She sent him to bed with curlers in his hair
telling him she would brush it out tomorrow morning first thing.
He went to bed and wondered about what was going to happen. He
wondered if he really could wear a dress and feel comfortable in
it. He wondered why he had agreed to try it. He wondered how Martha
would take seeing him in a dress. He finally fell asleep.
The next morning he slept later than usual. When he went into the
kitchen his mother told him to eat breakfast, then she would finish
his hair. She smiled when she saw his hair cap on his head. He
quickly ate his breakfast and she started on his hair.
She was combing and brushing it out and told him what they really
needed was a home perm kit or he could go to Kathy's Country Cut
and Curl down the road to get it done. He didn't answer her and she
continued until she was satisfied that it looked as feminine as she
could get it. When he looked in the mirror he saw he looked
completely different. He thought he was looking at a woman.
Then she had him go with her into her bedroom. She took out a
lacy slip and dress from her closet. Then she got a bra out of her
drawer and soon had it on him. It was a little tight but it would
do. She put two water filled balloons into knee highs and then into
the bra cups. She told him he had to be careful with them so they
didn't break. Then she fastened a garter belt around his waist. As
she was slipping the nylons up his legs she told him he would have
to shave them when he took a bath. She showed him how to fasten
them with the garters running down the inside of his panties.
Then she helped him get the slip on. He liked the silky feel of
it. She helped him get the dress on, telling him it was the dress
she was wearing when his father proposed to her. It was off-white
with red flowers on it and had lace trim on the upper half
outlining a gauzy inset that covered the front but showed just a
hint of cleavage.
Then she had him put on a pair of her red flats that he said were
a little tight. She saw he looked completely like a woman. She
couldn't believe this was her son. As a last thing she had him put
on some red, red lipstick.
He asked if she was sure this was how Martha wanted him and she
assured him it was. She said she wouldn't be surprised if when
Martha saw him she wouldn't propose right there. He smiled at the
thought of that. He knew he wouldn't turn her down.
His mother told him he should go to Martha's and see for himself
what she thought. He was afraid this wasn't what she had in mind.
With trepidation he started walking to Martha's.
When he arrived there was no one in the house. He saw the dishes
from breakfast on the sink and decided to do them up. He put on an
apron and started them. He was about half done when Martha came in.
Her jaw dropped when she saw him. The first thing she noticed was
his red lips.
"You don't have to do any cleaning today. Now, get that apron off
and we'll have a turnover and glass of milk."
He went to take the apron off and when he had it off Martha
gasped at the sight of him. She went to him and planted a kiss on
his lips. She held the kiss for the longest time. He knew it must
be what she wanted. She broke the kiss and got the turnovers and
milk for them.
They were sitting at the table with Martha telling him how nice
he looked. She had him stand and do a turn-around. He blushed when
she said he looked good enough to eat.
Then she surprised herself when she said, "You look so good I
have a question for you. I know we haven't really known each other
for long, but will you marry me and be my bride?"
He thought he misheard her and asked, "Are you asking me to marry
you?"
"I guess I just did ask you to marry me as my bride. What is your
answer?"
"My answer isn't as easy as you think. I never thought I would be
getting married and I know my mother would like to see me get
married but I don't know if I'm ready to get married."
"So your answer is no then!"
"No, I need a minute or so to think about it."
"I understand that. You take all the time you need."
He sat quietly munching on his turnover, and then took a slow sip
of milk. Finally he got up and took Martha's face in his hands and
gave her a kiss.
"Yes, I'll marry you."
"Thank you. You will be my bride then."
"I'll be your bride. I know I love you because I can't put my
feelings for you in words that do justice to how I feel. That to me
is real true love."
"That is beautiful. I know I love you and I have to apologize for
making you wear lipstick and panties but I had to see if you fit
what I am looking for. I am sure we will do a great job being
married to each other. Now, eat your turnover -- we have to run
into town."
They were on their way into town when he told her that the dress
he was wearing was the one his mother was wearing when she got
engaged. They both laughed that it must be the dress that caused
them to get engaged.
She took him into the jewelry store and when they left he was
wearing an expensive engagement ring. The matching wedding ring
with its little stub that locked into the engagement ring was in a
little box in Martha's pocket.
She then took him to the department store and told him to pick out
an entirely new outfit. She laughed when he tried on one dress
after another, finally settling on a cream colored one that had a
lot of lace. Then she had him get some new shoes to go with it. He
was in heaven and could feel it.
He was wearing his new clothes when they left the store. Then she
took him to the other department store in town and gave him a one
hundred dollar bill, telling him to get whatever he wanted.
When he walked out he sported pierced ears with glittering studs
in each ear and carried three bags with other items he'd bought.
Martha told him he shopped like a true woman and told him he looked
stupendous with his new earrings. She gave him a kiss on his lips
and told him she loved him.
They walked hand-in-hand back to her truck. He was happy that his
new shoes didn't pinch like the ones he'd gotten from his mother.
In one of the bags there was three more pairs of shoes he had
picked out. He didn't know why but he couldn't wait to wear all of
the clothes he had gotten. For some reason he didn't feel there was
anything wrong with what he was wearing.
On the way back he asked if he could help in the fields. Martha
said if he showed he could handle the work she would consider it.
Then she said when they got back she would see if he was truly able
to do the work in the field.
When she pulled into her driveway she told him to leave his stuff
in the truck, that she would give him a ride home so he wouldn't
have to walk carrying them. She told him to come with her.
She led him up to the hay mow and she picked up two bales of hay
and carried them about fifteen feet then told him to carry them
back. He tried both, then one, but couldn't lift it off of the
floor. Finally she told him he should use the talents he had and
forget about other things. He was devastated but heard what she'd
said. They walked holding hands into the house.
"Let me know when you want to go look at wedding gowns. I'll take
you wherever you want to get one. I am thinking about having the
wedding here and having a spanfarkel for the meal. I have had
Toomey Brothers food before and they do a class A job. You have to
think of who you want for maid of honor also."
"When do you think we will get married?"
"Well, how about the second Saturday in September. That way things
are slowing down here on the farm and it will give us a chance to
get a proper honeymoon. That will give us four months to prepare.
How does that sound?"
"It sounds all right to me. I don't think I have anything planned
for that day."
They both laughed and then kissed. Martha said they should go
tell his mother now. They left and when they pulled in his mother
was just going to go into the house. Her jaw dropped when she saw
him carrying all the bags full of things he had bought.
He laid the bags on the kitchen table then held his hand so his
mother could see the ring. She got tears in her eyes, then gave him
a kiss and told him congratulations. When she noticed his pierced
ears she asked where he had been. He told her Martha had taken him
shopping and that she should wait to see all the new clothes he'd
gotten.
Mary welcomed Martha into their family, telling her that she was
glad everything was working out so great. When Martha told her the
wedding date she said it was perfect. She looked at the calendar
and said it was the day after her wedding anniversary. Martha made
her good byes and kissed him, then left.
Dani immediately started to show his mother all of the things
he'd gotten. She was impressed when he told her he picked them out
all by himself. She told him Martha was odd but a good woman. She
told him she wished him the best of everything, then started
weeping. When he asked her what was wrong she said it was just that
she was so happy for him.
They sat by the table and Dani told her he wondered if he was
doing the right thing. His mother said, "That is something you have
to figure out for yourself. No one else can make that decision for
you. I know it is a hard one but you have to consider what you want
to do. How do you really feel about wearing a dress?"
"I hate to tell you this but they feel wonderful. For some
unknown reason I feel more alive in them. When I look in the mirror
I like the way I look. I know it's odd that I enjoy wearing dresses
but most of the time I really, really like the feel of them. Do you
know what I am talking about?"
"Yes, I do. I have had the feeling of being sexy-looking in a
dress. It is a delicious warm feeling that doesn't come from
anywhere else. When someone tells me I look nice in an outfit I get
a proud feeling."
"That's it exactly. When Martha told me I looked great in your
dress I felt that way. When the saleslady in town told me I looked
stupendous I wanted to hug her. I know there can be problems but I
want to make Martha happy and if wearing dresses is going to do it
then I want to continue."
"The best advice I can give you is to follow your heart. You are
a good boy and when Martha told me how she saw you in your apron
here she thought you would be the perfect match for her. I think
she fell in love with you right then and knew you were the one she
was going to marry."
"Oh, yes, like dad always says 'If a woman gets an idea in her
head you better believe that you aren't going to change her mind,
so you know it is going to happen.'"
"Will you look at the time? I have to start supper! Go put all of
your new things away so I can set the table."
He was really surprised when his father came in and told him he
really looked great. He knew his father was a real ladies man and
liked anyone in a dress but still he was glad his father was
accepting the changes in him.
The next day being Sunday Martha took him with her to meet her
friend Irma. They sat by Irma's pool and had a wonderful
discussion. He was surprised that Irma never said anything about
him being a man. On the way home Martha told him about Trudy and
Dave and the bikini. Now he was beginning to see where Martha got
the idea of putting him in a dress.
They had a leisurely supper that Martha had fixed. She said it
wasn't as good as the meals he'd fixed but it was flavorful and did
fill them up. After dishes were done they sat on the couch and
watched television, kissing during the commercials.
Martha asked him if he had picked a maid of honor yet and he told
her he had not. He wondered who he could pick, as he was never
close to any women, and the best one he knew was his sister who
lived a five hour drive away.
Back at home he talked to his mother, telling her about the maid
of honor dilemma. He told her he didn't know who to ask. She
suggested he ask his sister and he said she was the only woman he
knew who might work out. She dialed his sister's phone number and
handed him the phone.
"Hello, Norma, this is Daniel. I have a question to ask you.
Would you be the maid of honor for my wedding?"
"You would be proud to, thank you very much! There is something
I have to tell you that might change your mind. I am going to be
the bride."
"That doesn't make any difference to you? You will be happy to be
part of my wedding party! Thank you so very much."
"I am marrying Martha Van Hoof down the road. It was something
that just happened!"
"No, it is not gong to be a huge wedding as far as I know."
"What do you mean you are not surprised that I am going to be the
bride?"
"I know I'm not real masculine, but still, it's different wearing
dresses."
"I wear a size 14. Why do you ask?"
"It will be good to see you but you don't have to bring me
anything."
"OK, we'll see you next Friday night late. You don't have to come
special for me."
"I never thought about finding out what color bridesmaid dress
you need to get. I guess it would be good for you to meet Martha
and get to know her better. We'll see you next Friday then. Thank
you again for agreeing to be my maid of honor. Good-bye."
His mother was all smiles listening to his side of the
conversation. She knew his sister had agreed and that she was
coming home next week-end.
The next day he was happy to see that the beef roast he had put
in the refrigerator to marinate was still there. He started it and
when supper was ready he served the meal. He had made mashed
potatoes with peas already mixed in them. With the beef gravy and
the roast it made a delicious meal.
All three of them said how delicious everything was. Hank asked
him where he learned to make such delicious meals. He told him he
just liked to try things and had developed a marinade that really
seemed to hit the spot with everyone. He told them he had put two
beef bullion cubes in the water he cooked the potatoes in also.
Martha announced that she had to run into town right after supper.
He ended up doing the dishes all alone. She wasn't back when he
left to go home.
On Thursday he saw two bulldozers down the road a bit from the
farm house. He knew they were on Martha's land and he wondered what
was going on. When he asked Martha she said some supper club was
going to build there and dropped it at that.
On Friday night he was up later than his usual bedtime waiting
for Norma to arrive. When she arrived she gave him a kiss on the
cheek and handed him a bag. He looked in it and saw a beautiful
dress. It was definitely a party dress. He told her it was
beautiful.
In a harsh voice she said. "Shame on you! You make a better
looking woman than I do. No wonder you are getting married before
I do." Then she laughed and all of them laughed with her.
Saturday Norma accompanied him to get better acquainted with
Martha. She and Martha got along great. Martha thought how when
they were going to school together they didn't have a lot to do
with one another. They had a wonderful visit and Martha was invited
to the Simons's for Sunday dinner.
Monday Martha told him how glad she was that Norma was going to
be maid of honor. She suggested he ask Irma to stand up also. She
said that way they could have both Hank and Ralph stand up as
opposites. He said he didn't know Irma that well but would ask her.
Tuesday as he was cleaning her computer room he saw a form she
had filled out. One thing jumped out at him. It was her birth date.
Her birthday was in a week and a half. He wondered if he should
plan a birthday party for her. He decided to go ahead and plan
something for her birthday.
When the three of them came in for supper Martha said he had a
guilty look on his face. He almost lost it and was going to tell
her that he was going to have a birthday party for her but managed
to keep it in.
By the end of the week he had everything in place for the party.
He had told Hank and Ralph about it and they promised to keep it
secret. He had his mother coming and had called Irma and she said
she would be there. Everything was set for next Wednesday the
twenty-first.
Tuesday night the anticipation was getting great on him. He had
made home-made pizza for them to eat and it was a hit with
everyone. When they were doing dishes Martha told him he was acting
strange and he wondered if she knew what was up. He decided she
didn't know.
Wednesday morning he took the longest time getting ready for the
party. Four times he asked his mother how he looked in the party
dress Norma had given him. She told him each time he looked just
darling in it.
Finally he left for Martha's carrying the present he had gotten
for her at the Farmer's Co-op. When he arrived he set up a card
table in the kitchen and put his present on it. Then he started the
big beef roast he had marinating in the refrigerator. He knew it
was one of Martha's favorite meals.
Irma arrived first just as he was folding the peas into the
mashed potatoes. He greeted her and as he was finishing up with the
potatoes he asked her if she would consider being a bridesmaid for
him. She immediately said she would be proud to be a bridesmaid and
came and gave him a big hug.
His mother arrived next and she was amazed at how he had
decorated the kitchen with Happy Birthday, Martha signs all over.
She couldn't get over at how nice he looked in the full apron over
his party dress. She looked at the birthday cake and thought how it
looked more feminine than Martha was, but didn't say anything.
They had parked their cars on the road behind the machine shed so
Martha wouldn't see them. Hank and Ralph got in before Martha so
everyone was ready when she came in.
Martha came in and everyone yelled 'Surprise.' She was
flabbergasted then said, "Oh my gosh, it is the twenty-first isn't
it?"
Everyone including Hank and Ralph gave her a hug. She didn't know
what to do as she had never had a birthday party before.
They all sat down to eat and everyone including his mother said
how delicious the supper was. Irma asked about the different
seasonings in the different foods and he said it was a secret. His
mother said she didn't know where he got it as she only used salt
and pepper to season foods.
When they had finished eating Martha opened her gifts. She was
really pleased with Dani's gift. It was an ice water container that
mounted on her tractor. It had a clip for the included cup and was
John Deere green with the John Deere logo on it.
She gave him a deep kiss and asked him if all of this wasn't his
idea. He admitted it was. She thanked him for everything. Then it
was time for the cake. Dani cut and served it and everyone said how
good it was. The celebration ended with everyone singing Happy
Birthday to her. She had tears in her eyes by the time it was done.
After everyone had left he started to clean up. Martha was going
to help, but he told her it was her birthday and he would do it and
that she didn't need to help. She insisted, and soon the two of
them were doing the dishes.
"I really want to thank you for the party. It was a wonderful
surprise. I never had a birthday party before and this one was
perfect. I had forgotten it was my birthday."
"Thank you! I was hoping everything would work out. I wanted you
to be surprised and I know you were. By the way, I asked Irma if
she would stand up for the wedding and she agreed."
"Great! I was hoping she would. You know she was married less
than six months when her husband was killed in a car crash. She
says she will never find another man like him. I keep hoping
someone will pop up but I am afraid she's stopped looking. It's a
shame, as she is such a good person."
"I don't know her that well but I like her. She accepted me right
off the bat without a lot of questions about why I am wearing a
dress."
"She has already seen it before and she is one smart lady. For
your information she told me you were adorable. Don't you feel
adorable?"
They both laughed, and when the dishes were finished and he took
off his apron and she saw the party dress he was wearing, she said
it was a shame for him to have to cover it up with that apron. She
gave him a deep, deep kiss as a thank you for everything.
The next morning his mother asked him when he was thinking about
looking at wedding gowns. He said he hadn't given it a thought.
"I have an idea for you to consider. I was thin like you when I
got married and I have sealed my wedding gown in plastic. I could
have it dry cleaned again and we could take it over to Sheila
Gritton's because I know she does a lot of sewing and can adjust
whatever needs to be adjusted. It's completely up to you, it is
just a thought."
"That sounds good to me. I have looked at your wedding picture a
lot of times and the dress is beautiful."
"Good, then it's settled. I'll get it cleaned and I will call
Sheila and set up a fitting for you. It's funny; I always hoped
Norma would be the one to wear it, and now my baby is going to be
the one wearing it."
"Mom, can I ask you something?"
"You can ask me anything. What do you want to know?"
"Do you really think it is right for me to be wearing dresses and
being a bride?"
"I have given it a lot of thought and I see the difference in
you. I like the way you are so happy, and it seems to me that you
have grown a lot as a person since you started wearing dresses.
I'll admit it is different, but everyone is different. When I saw
how you walked with your head up higher in the party dress for
Martha's party. I thought, that is how you were supposed to be. I
was impressed with how you took control of something for the first
time and the wonderful job you did. But like I told you before, it
is up to you to make that decision, whether you want to continue to
wear dresses or not."
"I have to tell you that most of the time the dresses fell
wonderful but there are times I wonder if it is right. I don't know
now if I could go back to wearing pants and a shirt. The memory of
them seems like it was so long ago."
"The best advice I can give you is to follow your heart. From
what you are saying I think you can handle the wearing of dresses."
"Thank you, mom! You have a way of making me feel better about
everything."
"That's what mothers are for. It gives me a good feeling that we
can talk like this."
Two days later when he got home from Martha's his mother said
something had come in the mail for him. She told him when he was
done with his bath to come and see her. He hurried with his bath,
wondering what she had for his surprise.
When he was finally by her his mother showed him a pair of gel
breast forms. She said they were the most realistic ones she could
find. Minutes later she had them glued on his chest. When he
hugged her she noticed how real they felt.
The following Monday morning they went to Sheila's for the first
fitting of the wedding gown. Sheila was impressed with how lovely
it was. She put some pins in while he had it on and said it needed
very little adjustment. She said he looked beautiful in it. As she
was adjusting the veil she asked Mary if she minded if she added
some lace to the veil. Mary told her to go ahead, that it would
make it special for him and not an exact copy of her wedding gown.
That night as they were doing dishes he told Martha he was going
to wear the wedding dress his mother had worn for her wedding. When
he said he saw the walls going up on the supper club, Martha told
him she had heard that it was looking at an end of September
opening date. She said she talked to the construction
superintendent and he said it would be up to the owner, but he
suspected that the end of September was going to be the date.
Their wedding day was fast approaching and things were going
great with them. His mother took him into town to pick out the
jewelry he would wear on the big day. Everything was silver and he
saw it matched his engagement ring perfectly. He also got a pair of
two-inch white satin heels to wear with the wedding gown.
Two days before the wedding and he was a bundle of nerves
already. He had his appointment for Saturday morning set up at
Cathy's Country Cut and Curl to have everything done. He checked
that everything was there for him to wear. He went to Martha's for
the last time before the wedding and saw the large tent going up in
the front yard, and the big grill for the pig to be roasted on was
sitting there waiting to be used. He had butterflies in his stomach
in anticipation of the big day.
He was amazed at how relaxed Martha seemed. When he asked her how
she could be so relaxed she told him only the bride gets the
jitters, then laughed until her eyes watered. She told him when the
minister was told how the wedding was going to be he at first
wasn't going to do it, then reconsidered after she explained
everything. She said everything was in place all he had to do is be
there. She said she would change in the milk house and he could use
the house. He told her she didn't need to use the milk house but
she said that was where she was going to change. She said it was as
clean as the house and had everything she needed to change there.
She gave him a kiss and told him she couldn't wait until they
were married. He wasn't sure that everything was as simple as she
made it out to be. She just didn't get too upset over anything.
When he looked in the tent there seemed to be a lot of chairs in
there.
The next day his mother told him over and over to settle down. He
was so antsy that she finally told him to make lunch for them. He
was starting it when Norma pulled in. She had taken a day's
vacation.
Norma asked him if everything was taken care of. He assured her
it was. Tom and Sylvia Watson's son was going to videotape it. He
had volunteered to do it and both Martha and he agreed it was a
great idea.
Norma told him he looked lovely in the blue sailor dress he was
wearing. She asked him if he had gotten a wedding gift for Martha
and he told her he had. She got him to agree to go into town with
her after lunch.
After lunch they went into town. Norma picked up some make-up and
soon they were at the ice cream parlor having a sundae.
"So, you never told me, how did you and Martha become so close?
I am wondering how things moved so fast with you two."
He told her how Martha had hired him to clean and cook, and about
the lipstick, then the panties, and how mom had talked to her and
he ended up in a dress. When he told her how his love developed she
said it was like a love story in a movie. She said he must really
love her to agree to wear dresses and be her bride. They talked for
over an hour. It was the closest talking they had ever done. He
never felt closer to Norma than he did right now.
They got home just before supper and his mother thanked Norma for
keeping him busy all afternoon. Norma said it was the closest she'd
ever felt to him and that she'd thought he was making a mistake,
but now she thought it was the right thing for him to do.
After supper he took a long bath and packed a bag to take along
after the wedding. He had no idea where they were going to spend
their wedding night but he wanted to be prepared.
It took him a long time to fall asleep that night. Finally he
fell asleep, and when he didn't get up when he should, his mother
woke him up and told him not to put any make up on as that would be
done at Cathy's. Norma told him she would take him to Cathy's and
that Cathy was going to give her a brush out while his perm set.
When he got to Cathy's she said Martha had just left and she was
all ready for him. She clipped his hair and started to put the perm
in. She got it in and had his hair covered, then had Norma come so
she could do her brush out.
By the time he was done he didn't recognize himself in her
mirror. His eyebrows were thinner and his face was beautifully made
up. Cathy handed him the lipstick she used, telling him to redo it
just before the wedding started. She gave him a hug and told him
she would see him at two.
On the way home he saw them putting a sign up in front of the
supper club. The sign was for 'Farmer's Supper Club'. He asked
Norma if she knew of any family named Farmer and she said she
didn't.
They arrived home and he had to scurry to get the bag that he'd
packed and the garment bag with the wedding dress and slip them
into the car. Norma had everything she needed in her car.
They got to Martha's and were surprised that Martha was already
out in the milk house. He and Norma went into the house and saw
Irma there. She looked beautiful and he told her so.
Both of them told him he had to start getting ready. When Irma
saw his panties, which were white with light blue lace, she said he
was just about ready already. She helped him get the full slip on
over his head and then the wedding gown. It took some time to get
all of the little buttons buttoned. Then it took both of them to
get the headpiece-veil just right and pin it in place. He was
putting the heels on and Irma stopped him, handing him a penny. She
told him it was to go in his shoe.
"You know, something old, something new, something borrowed,
something blue and a penny in your shoe. It is all supposed to be
for good luck in your marriage."
He said he had to redo his lipstick and went into the bathroom.
When he didn't come out after a little while Norma went to see what
was taking so long. She found him sitting on the toilet seat cover.
He said he didn't know if he could go through with it. Norma talked
to him as a big sister and when she was done he was ready to go out
there.
On the way out while going through the living room he looked
across the road where all the cars were parked and was amazed at
how many were there. Just before he was ready to go out the door to
the tent Norma gave him a hug and told him he was doing great. She
gave him a kiss on his cheek then lowered the veil.
Irma took his hand and Norma carried the train to his wedding
gown as they walked to the tent. He heard 'Here Comes the Bride'
and when he entered his father took his arm and led him down the
carpeted aisle.
He wasn't paying attention to what the minister was saying
because he had all sorts of thoughts going through his head. When
Norma poked him to say 'I do' he said it.
Martha took his hand and as she slid the ring on his finger and
said "With this ring I do thee wed" She added, "I love you."
He heard the minister pronounce them married and tell them they
could kiss. Martha slowly lifted his veil and then told him she
loved him and kissed him. The kiss lasted over three minutes to
the applause of the crowd.
When they broke from the kiss he saw Martha was wearing a black
pants suit with a black tie. He thought he never saw her look more
beautiful. They walked down the carpeted aisle out into the warm
sunlight. They greeted each and every one of their guests.
By the time they had greeted everyone it was almost time to eat
supper. He hadn't noticed all the tables and chairs set up on the
lawn. While they were eating, a band was setting up. He wondered
who had taken care of all of these things, then decided Martha had
really been busy getting it all set up.
Just about everyone had finished eating when he saw the men head
for a beer stand that was set-up in the corner of the yard. He
noticed some women were there also. He saw Hank and Irma sitting at
one of the tables talking and that they were holding hands. He
pointed it out to Martha and she laughed and said she hoped the two
of them got along.
His mother came and told him he made a beautiful bride and that
she was proud if him. His father was standing there and finally
took his hand and shook it. Then he said he had to kiss the bride.
He gave him a kiss on his cheek and told him he loved him. They
both had tears in their eyes. His dad said he had to leave to help
with chores but would be back as soon as possible.
He looked around and didn't see Norma anywhere. He wanted to
thank her for all that she had done for him. Martha came and took
his arm and led him to meet the girls who always celebrated girls'
long week-ends at Irma's. He was surprised when she introduced
Trudy and a woman named Virginia who was a man named Dave. Dave was
wearing attractive make-up and a very fancy dress. They said they
were staying at Irma's for the week-end.
Quite a while later he saw Norma and Ralph coming toward the
celebration, and they were walking holding hands. He headed to cut
her off.
"I have been looking for you. Where have you been? I just want to
thank you for everything you did for me, especially for your advice
and for settling me down before the ceremony. I was really at a
loss what to do. I love you and want you to know that."
"Thank you, I appreciate it. I was talking to Ralph while he did
the milking. He is really a very nice man. I think you will see me
around here more often in the future. He asked me to go with him
for lunch tomorrow and I accepted. You know what they say --
weddings beget weddings! You never know what or who you will meet
at a wedding, do you?"
She left him and he saw her head right for Ralph. He smiled and
wondered what was going on. First it was Irma and Hank, now it's
Norma and Ralph.
Martha and Dani mingled with the crowd. He got a chance to talk
to Dave and found he was a very nice guy, even though he was
wearing a dress. Dave told him he was now Virgina, and that he had
decided to dress as a woman for the rest of his life. They
compared notes about wearing dresses, and Dave wished he could wear
a wedding dress as pretty as Dani's.
Finally the crowd started to thin out and with about a dozen
people left Martha told him it was time to depart. He grabbed his
little suitcase and she grabbed hers and they were off.
He thought they would be staying at a motel in town but they
cruised right past them. Martha finally pulled up and parked at one
on the edge of the next town.
They were in their room and after a lot of kissing they both said
they were tired. Dani went into the bathroom to change. He put on
a long flowing white gown with light blue ribbons decorating it.
When he exited the bathroom and they saw each other they both
just stared. They were both wearing the same nightgown, only in
different sizes.
"I have never worn a nylon gown before. It feels kind of nice. I
guess we both have the same sense of fashion." Martha said.
When they got into bed a strong sense of tiredness came over both
of them. They were kissing, and both fell asleep in each others
arms. The next morning he awoke first and they were still wrapped
in each others arms. He felt so wonderful. Then he had to go to the
toilet. He untangled himself from her arms and got out of bed.
When he came out of the bathroom he was surprised to hear Martha
say good morning to him. She was smiling and he thought she never
looked so pretty.
"I don't know about you but I am so hungry I could eat a horse.
They are supposed to have a continental breakfast here. Let's get
dressed and see if we can find it." Martha said.
He put on the green floral flowing dress he had brought along.
Martha told him he looked good enough to eat in it. Then they left
their room to find breakfast.
As they were having their coffee and Danish Martha said, "You
really looked beautiful yesterday. I am so happy I could just
sing. We have to be back by one for the gift opening. I love you
and I hope you are as happy as I am!"
"I am so happy it is hard to describe. Yesterday when you lifted
my veil to kiss me I couldn't believe it was as man and wife. I
felt so warm and fuzzy inside. It was like being in heaven. I love
you very, very much!"
"I know you do. I want to tell you something. I think I fell in
love with you when I stopped to visit your mother. You looked so
nice and you were the vision that I have been looking for. That is
why I hired you, just to see if you were the one for me, and I know
now that you are the only one for me."
"Thank you. You know my mother said you probably fell in love
with me then, and I didn't believe her. You women know those
things, and see things we men miss. I have to tell you something.
Last night when I came out of the bathroom you were a vision of
loveliness in your nightgown."
They made small talk and then returned to their room to pack to
go home. He couldn't get the slip and wedding dress into the same
garment bag so he carried the slip on the outside and laid it
carefully on the garment bag.
They were on the way home and almost there when Martha turned
into the parking lot of the new Supper Club. He was surprised, and
wondered why she was stopping there. They went up to the front door
and he saw a big red bow on the door.
"Now, doesn't that look like a present with the bow and all?"
Martha said as she unlocked the door. She led him inside saying,
"Let's have a look at the kitchen."
In the kitchen he saw there was a lot of stainless steel. On one
of the work tables was what looked like a set of white scrubs and
a chef's hat. Martha led him over to the clothes and grabbed the
chef's hat and put it on his head.
"This is your new domain. This is my wedding present to you. You
are such a great cook I figured it was time to share your talent.
I have already hired a manager for the supper club, and he got a
manager for the bar area. You can feature some of the dishes you
served to us. You decide what you want on the menu. I suggest your
roast beef and your farmer's pizza. Your meatloaf wouldn't be bad
also. You look so good in that hat. Remember when I told you that
you had talent for cooking and cleaning? Well now you can use your
talent for cooking."
He had tears in his eyes and couldn't speak. This was the biggest
shock he had ever had in his life. Finally he took her in his arms
and kissed her as deep as he had ever kissed her before. He
wandered around the kitchen looking at everything, including the
walk-in freezer and walk-in cooler. He opened each of the four oven
doors and peered inside. She watched him as he looked around
looking like the boy who had just gotten the perfect toy on
Christmas morning.
Martha asked him if he wanted to take the chef's hat off and he
said he would like to leave it on. She laughed and knew she had
gotten him the perfect wedding gift.
A half hour later they were home. He was still wearing the chef's
hat. She laughed at how he was like he was in another world. The
guests would be arriving soon and she let him wear the hat.
The guests arrived and the gift opening had started. They opened
the cards first and were really surprised when they opened the card
from his mother and father and found a check for five hundred
dollars in it. When they opened the card from Norma they found a
gift certificate for three hundred dollars for the co-op in town.
When he said thank you to her he saw she was sitting next to Ralph
and they were holding hands.
They got to the other presents and when they opened the one from
Irma they found a big electric roaster. She said she knew they
didn't have one and she couldn't live without hers. She was sitting
holding hands with Hank. Martha thanked her and thought and hoped
she had found someone to take her late husband's place.
They had three gifts left to open when the caterers arrived to
start taking down the tents and the small bar area. They got to the
last gift and Martha saw it was to her from Dani. She opened it and
found a beautiful big framed aerial photograph of the farm. She
said she'd always meant to get one but never seemed to do it. She
told him it was the best present he could have gotten her.
Then she said, "You may be wondering why Dani is wearing that
chef's hat. I got him that new supper club down the road. He is
such a great cook I decided that he should share his talent. He
will be the head chef there. I hope each of you will visit him
there. So much for the commercial -- thank each and every one of
you for making our wedding so special."
Everyone there came and wished them good luck in their marriage.
They and Hank, Ralph and Irma helped them carry the wedding gifts
inside. Both of them laughed when Hank and Irma drove off together.
They knew Ralph was heading to the Simon's farm to see Norma.
Dani started to put some of the gifts away as Martha was looking
at the papers that listed what everyone had given them.
They ate supper and Martha went to help milk the cows. Dani went
to get his clothes and personal things from his old home. When he
told his mother about both of them having the same nightgown in
different sizes she laughed. She told him she was so happy for him
and that she was so happy he would be so close. She told him
anytime he wanted to talk to just call.
He had just about everything put away when Martha came in from
milking. Martha handed him a big suitcase and told him he had to
pack for a weeks honeymoon. He asked where they were going and she
told him eventually they should end up in the Black Hills.
When they went to bed they consummated their marriage and as they
lay there in the afterglow each of them was thankful for the other.
Neither one of them had ever believed it could be so great.
The next morning they were off and Martha drove. She drove until
mid-morning when they stopped for a snack. He volunteered to drive
but she said she knew where they were going and it was only a
couple of hours until their first stop.
They pulled into a motel and checked in. After they were settled
in their room Martha told him to hurry up, that they had some
shopping to do. She told him that they were close to the Mall of
America and that the shuttle would take them there.
At the mall he found a white skirt with bows for trim. It was a
straight skirt made of stretch material. Martha noticed that when
he tried it on it emphasized his slim build. They checked out all
of the dress stores and lastly they were in a women's accessories
store and he found a denim hobo purse with lace trim. He loved how
it looked and all Martha could do was laugh at his antics. She
thought he would find more to buy but was happy that he was at
least finding something.
When he asked her why she wasn't getting anything she said they
didn't have a farmer's co-op store there. Then they almost passed
a collectables store. He said he wanted to go in and she agreed.
They found a toy tractor there that was just like the one she drove
