Maiden of Rome II
By ShannonQ
It is seven years after leaving Rome for Spain. Maximus, Penelope, and
Attia are enjoying their sunset years as Tiberius dies and the new Emperor
Caligula is reeking havoc on the people in the capitol of the Empire.

In part one Druses Marcellus was a Tribune in the XVII Legion which was
attacked by the Germans under Arminius the chief of the central tribes.
This was the battle of the Teutoburg Forest when Augustus was the Emperor
of Rome. Drusus was taken captive and sent to the witch Dagmar. Dagmar
developed a fondness for the Roman and for months they engaged in sexual
encounters frequently. The food and special berry wine given to him turned
him slowly into a woman and was given the name Penelope. Dagmar cast a
charm on her to accept her new female persona. With reluctance, she sent
Penelope back to Rome where she met and married Maximus Lepidius. She
killed Arminius' son Groat with an impossible shot across the Weser River
with an arrow. She also slew two large German men who was sent to Rome to
avenge Groat's death. She also gave birth to a son Agrippa and a daughter
Attia. For her great feat of killing the son of Arminius, she was given a
Wreath of Honor bestowed upon her from the Emperor Augustus.
There are no transformations in Part 2 of this story. The transformation
took place in Maiden of Rome One. It is just a continuation of
Drusus/Penelope saga.
ONE
"Caesar, there is a delegate of Greek acrobats awaiting you outside. They
want to put on a performance for you," Tribune Agrippa whispered into the
Emperor's ear.
Caligula was at the games and he was very bored by the lack of men being
killed in his honor.
"Really? They've arrived early?"
"Yes Caesar, they have a new special act to show to you. No one but the
acrobats has done this before. They insist that you be the first to see
it."
"Well then, we shouldn't keep our guests waiting," Caligula grinned at the
prospect.
Agippa led the way and the Praetoriun Guard fell in to flank the Emperor.
On a signal from the Tribune Cassius, the father of the plan, the men
surrounding him drew their swords in the private passage way for the
Emperor and his guests. No one knew who was the first to thrust their
sword into the flesh of Caligula as he received stab after stab.
"NO!" he screamed in pain. "You can't kill me, I'm a god."
"Then die as a god, Caesar," one of the Guard sneered stabbing him again.
"Agrippa, you are in this too, you must use your sword on him."
Agrippa had mixed feeling about this. He hated the Emperor but he had
sworn allegiance to him. With Cassius' urging, he plunged his sword into
the dead man's stomach. He grabbed a rag to wipe off the blood.
"Now we have to kill his wife and baby," Cassius said.
"What do you mean?" Agrippa argued.
"She's a harmless woman and has just given birth."
"We don't want any of his seed to remain."
"I want no part of this," Agrippa said.
"We agreed to kill Caligula then sack the palace for gold then leave. I
think killing his wife and son is a bad mistake. You'll regret what you
do!"
"Then get the hell out of here," Cassius snarled at the young man.
Agrippa turned and walked away with a few others who were against the
murder of the woman and baby. The rest followed Cassius to finish the job.
Agrippa headed to the new court room of the Emperor which contained a
solid gold throne. He was accompanied by six others. Caligula was dead.
Rome was without a head of state. There would be chaos in the streets,
riots, looting, murder, and rape. The Praetoriuns couldn't deal with such
a mob. Turning, he spotted a small room just off the main palace. He saw a
pair of feet behind a curtain with its edge just six inches from floor. He
drew his sword took it to move the curtain. He saw a frightened Claudius.
"P-p-please d-don't k-kill me," he stuttered.
"Uncle Claudius," Agrippa smiled.
"What are you hiding from?"
"I-I heard about C-Caligula being s-slain. I w-was afraid."
"Of what?" Agrippa asked. Then it struck him. Here was the new Caesar!
"Men," he called out. "Get in here quick." They raced in with swords
drawn. "Give hail to our new Caesar."
"Claudius? You have to be joking," a man laughed.
"Not at all," Agrippa said. "He's related to Caligula. He'll make a fine
Emperor," he winked at the others. "And we'll pledge our allegiance to
him."
"Of course!" another exclaimed. "A new Caesar to guard. Boys, I think we
don't have to sack and leave. Our new Emperor is right before us."
"I-I d-don't want t-to be Emperor," Claudius protested.
"Yes, you do," Agrippa smiled, putting an arm about the old man's
shoulder. "You will be perfect. Unlike your nephew, you aren''t mean nor
bloodthirsty. You are well read and behind that limp and stuttering tongue
is an intelligent mind."
"I-I'm a f-fool."
"Ah you made your family think so but we of the Guard know better. I've
seen you with your beautiful wife Messalina, you don't stutter then. Your
limp is real but exaggerated. I think of you sitting in Caesar's seat with
such a lovely wife will be good for the Empire."
"Do I have a choice?" Claudius asked without a stutter.
"I'm afraid not, Caesar. We only murdered Caligula for being the monster
he was. We won't do anything but protect your life and that of your wife."
Resigned to the inevitable, Claudius became the new Emperor. By the time
the Roman people learned of Caligula's death, Claudius was presented as
his successor. He stood on the balcony with his wife at his side,
receiving praise from the people. Claudius waved to crowd while Agrippa
appeared before the Senate to tell them that Claudius was the new monarch
and they had better accept it or deal with the Praetoriun Guard. Claudius
had condemned Cassius and a few of his men to death, not for Caligula's
demise but for the murder of the late Emperor's wife and child. Cassius
pronounced a curse on Claudius then was escorted to his death.

Penelope had been nursing Maximus as he was dying of cancer. The pain was
so bad that she had to resort to giving him raw opium in his wine so he
could sleep in comfort. She sat at his side every waking moment. She loved
him as much or even more so than the day they met at her father's feast.
They had their arguments but what couple married this long didn't? But no
issue they heatedly debated could come before their love for each other.
At first, Penelope wanted to selfishly hold on to him. However as time
passed, she was ready to let her beloved to die in peace. Either she or
Attia would run to get opium from a trader if they ran low. When she was
sleeping Mary or Isa took over in caring for him. In the meantime,
Penelope trained Attia in the same swordplay, spear throwing, and archery
as she did when she was Druses. Attia had inherited her mother's speed and
agility. In fact Penelope believed that her daughter was better than she
ever was. She enjoyed the exercise even though Penelope was slowing down
with age. Many times Attia had tricked her by going one way then pivoting
and slapping her in the same manner her mother did many years ago. Only
not in the ribs but stinging her ass.
Now that Dagmar was gone, there weren't any magic potion for her to make
her husband well. He was the only one she ever had sex with. She taught
Attia to remain chaste until she married a man she loved. Penelope even
showed her daughter how to masturbate to relieve the strong sexual urges
that came with a beautiful seventeen year old body. She had the long
flaming red hair and slight build of her mother. Breasts were small but
pert. Noticeable when wearing a gown just like Penelope did at her age.
Attia had many men from noble families that lived in southern Spain but
none had caught her eye as yet. She like her mother would know that man
once he walked into her life.
"How do you feel today, Master?" Mary asked Maximus upon his awakening.
His face grimaced in pain but then smiled. "I'm not so good, Mary," he
replied. Before coming to Spain he had freed his two slaves at his wife's
urging. "Can you get me something to drink?"
"Happily," she rose from her seat and got some wine pouring in a bit of
the drug to relieve his agony. She lifted his head as he drank half the
cup.
"Thank you," he turned his back to her.
Only sleep seemed to ease the ache of the disease that was eating his body
away. Maximus knew he had just a short time to live but accepted his fate.
"Sleep well, Master," Mary shed a tear.
She felt a light touch on her shoulder. Turning she saw her former lover
looking at Maximus. Since they converted to the Faith they never touched
each other in lust again. Both vowed to each other to remain celebate.
"The Master won't last long," Isa said with a tear rolling down her cheek.
"I wish he would swallow his pride and become a Christian like ourselves."
"I pray for him too," Mary patted the hand on her shoulder. "I only hope
it won't be too late. I don't know when Attia is going to announce that
she is a Christian."
"We must keep our word and not say anything until she feels ready to tell
her mother and father. I caught her humming a hymn the other day as she
sewed a new seam in her gown."
"She is very beautiful and I love her attitude. Brought up with all this
wealth and power and it's never gone to her head. She could have easily
become a spoiled brat."
Maximus let out an uncomfortable moan as he tried finding a more suitable
position as the opium made his pain subside. How a powerful man like he
was when they arrived was now down to almost half of his stature.
They had not entertained in over a year when he first took ill. Blood in
his bowels was the first clue that there was something wrong. Gradually he
became weaker and weaker to the point where guests were no longer invited
to their house with the patio that now overlooked the Mediterranian Sea
and the large rock of Gibraltar. Before his illness he had taken Penelope,
Attia and the servents to see the primates on the rock. It was a very
enjoyable day for them all.
"Mistress, come quick," Isa shouted frantically.
"What is is?" Penelope dropped her wooden sword she was practicing with
Attia.
"Master! I can't awaken him."
"Oh no!" Penelope mumbled as she raced to the house with her daughter
close behind.
They ran inside to find that Maximus had died. Penelope and Attia wept.
Penelope wished to be at his side when the end came. Mary and Isa were
sobbing too. The four women cried until there were no more tears. The
servants cleaned up the mess he left then Penelope dismissed the rest. She
undressed him and saw how much weight he had lost. She held his manhood
for minutes thinking all about the lovemaking and creation of their two
children. Oh how she wished for another. A younger son or daughter would
be wonderful. Penelope wanted one more but it wasn't to be. She to be
satisfied with Agrippa and Attia.
THREE
Six months later they were back in Rome. Caligula was dead and Claudius
was now the Emperor. Not by his own choosing but by his Praetoriun Guard.
The Senators had put up a mild protest but with Agrippa and several of the
Guard standing behind him, they gave in and asked him the Emperor of the
Roman Empire. At first Claudius declined. After the second request, he
accapted. Claudius still had a fear of the Guard. Not for himself, but for
his gorgeous wife Messalina.
After Maximus' death and burial, Penelope closed the house and the four
women had returned to the center of the Empire. Agrippa was at the dock in
Ostia as the galley eased up to the pier. He jumped into the boat to hug
his mother, sister and the servants. On his advise, he encouraged Attia to
carry a sharp dagger strapped around her outer thigh due to the crime
against many women in the city. He even gave her one of his already to
strap around her waist and leg under her gown. Penelope wore her Wreath of
Honor that was awarded her by Augustus.
She even heard news of Livia's death. She outlived both sons. Germanicus
and Tiberius. Penelope didn't feel any sense of loss. The woman frightened
her when she was Attia's age. Livia's shadow was still larger than life.
People either loved or hated her. Being the Emperess at Augustus' side,
Livia cast a long shadow across the land even after her death when she was
in her ninties.
***
Returning to their house in Rome, they took their time settling in.
Penelope looked at the patio where she sent two of Arminius' assassins to
their deaths. She assumed the second was dead after all these years. The
wooden dummies were gone but she could have more made to practice for
herself and her daughter. She found the faintest traces of blood seeped in
the stones of the porch.
"It's good to have you home, Mother," Agrippa grinned.
He was now in charge of the Praetoriun Guard. A reward from Claudius for
not killing him and his protection from his enemies in the Senate. He had
the royal purple cloak that only the leader could wear.
"Under the circumstances, it's good to be back. I couldn't live in that
villa without your father. He gave me such a happy marriage. I am truly a
lucky woman to have loved and been loved by your father."
"Yes, you and Father did get along well."
"What about you? Any girl on the horizon?"
"With all those gorgeous Greek whores? A man's got to be crazy to marry
these days. I mean you get what you want at a reasonable price without
having to worry about her and kids. Why do I need to marry?"
Penelope gave him a playful punch in the arm.
"Your father had a Jewish prostitute he was crazy about. I couldn't make
myself to have sex with him for almost two months after giving both of you
birth so he went down to that house on the river that only serves
noblemen. She must have been someone very good because he always wanted
her."
"WHERE IS THAT SHE-DEVIL?" Gaius walked in trumpeting his arrival.
"GAIUS," Penelope ran into his arms. She could feel that his muscles had
turned soft. "You are getting soft my Brother."
"Too much of a good thing in Rome," he hugged her. "By Jupiter, you've
kept your shape for a middle-aged woman."
"Attia keeps me in shape with our sword play," Penelope announced with her
daughter standing right in back of her. "She's better than I ever was."
"Oh shit!" Gaius groaned. "I'm not about to take her challenge. I'm so out
of shape since my return three years ago that I get tired in less than
five minutes."
"She'll take you in two," Penelope boasted.
"Welcome Uncle Gaius," Attia stepped forward and hugged him. "It's been so
long since I've seen you. You look wonderful."
"True! And you're as beautiful as your mother was when she was younger."
"Thank you." Penelope smiled. Attia was showing her feminine side at the
moment. If Gaius or Agrippa were crazy enough to take her on, they would
be in for a big surprise. She had beaten both many many times and knew her
daughter could do the same.
***
That night everyone in the family reclined at the table for a late dinner.
Vispsania and her two grown sons were there ogling Attia regretting they
were related. Attia knew the boys were staring at her but she pretended
not to notice unless one spoke to her then she gave them a smile at some
of the compliments thrown her way. She had given Agrippa a run for his
money with wooden swords including that pivoting and whacking him in the
side with the blade. Her brother still felt sore as Gaius laughed telling
him how Penelope had hurt him up in Gaul.
"So was Father in a lot of pain at the end?" Agrippa asked, rubbing the
sore ribs Attia had given him.
"Yes but we had enough opium to put in his wine to ease the pain and let
him sleep. He died in his sleep," Penelope informed everyone. "Maximus was
a great Roman."
"Yeah, he kept us all in line," Gaius said lightly. "One never knew when
he was going to show up at night checking the sentries on guard duty. He
had a few publicly flogged for sleeping on the job."
"And how did you run the Legions after he returned to Rome?" Vipsania
asked.
"Just about the same as him. I had a few flogged myself. It teaches the
rest to stay alert. If the barbarians tried to sneak over the bridge they
would be on us like a swarm of wasps."
"I think the killing of Groat took a lot of wind out of their sails,"
Agrippa said. "Mother really made that almost impossible shot that killed
him."
"It must have been pure luck," Agrippa grinned.
"Luck or not, he's been long gone," Penelope popped a grape into her
mouth. "I hear it's quiet on that boundry up there."
"Yes, and Claudius has our men in their territory clearing a mile wide
path of trees. He thinks if we push them back over the Rhine River it will
be a lot safer for our troops," Agrippa said.
"It makes sense," Gaius stated. "It's a wider river and if he doesn't
build any bridges across it, that will make our postion a lot more secure.
We can bring in some Gauls to cultivate the land for more grain."
Penelope wondered if that hut that she stayed at as Drusus was still
standing. Drusus had a fond memory of Dagmar but now that he was a she,
she tried shaking it out of her mind. She found it difficult recalling how
Dagmar had made Drusus' penis longer and thicker so he could satisfy her.
For more than eight months he had bedded her, or was it she? Whatever,
they had a wonderful time having those relations. Penelope felt kind of
weird being such a beautiful woman and having a cock until that very last
night when she was given a potion to drink and the next morning she was a
complete female. She even had a hymen for her husband to tear when they
made love on their wedding night.
***
The next morning bright and early Penelope and Attia walked to the market
place. She wore her Wreath of Honor as she stopped by all the carts.
Penelope was unarmed but Attia had her very sharp dagger just under her
gown with a hidden opening where she could pull it out if any threat came
their way. Penelope inspected every bit of fruit and vegetables before
buying the best they had. Of course she dickered with them for a lower
price. She was happy with this part of Rome. The last time she was here
was when that horrible Caligula talked to her. Then they walked to the
meat area. The ducks looked like they were freshly killed. She bought
three for tonight's dinner. The beef looked bad so she passed that by. She
bought a lamb to have delivered to the house after it was slaughtered and
finally she purchased several dozen eggs.
"Ah, the Lady Penelope," a voice behind her said.
She turned to see the Emperor Claudius standing there with a very
beautiful woman who had to be his wife. She had heard of Messalina and it
wasn't all good. She looked to be so young and innocent but appearances
were deceiving. However Penelope had to admit that she was a lovely
looking woman.
"Hail Caesar," she said then Attia said the same.
Messalina looked at the young redhead with envy. She admitted to herself
that she was very pretty. She then looked at Penelope and could see the
mother-daughter resemblence.
"Messalina, this is the mother of Agrippa."
Messalina broke into a smile, "Agrippa saved my husband's life and was
responsible for making him our Emperor. He has our gratitude forever."
"Thank you," Penelope replied. "This is the woman I told you about that
killed Groat, Arminius' son. She shot an arrow across the Weser River and
got him right in the eye. Augustus rewarded her with that Wreath she is
wearing."
"I heard about that," Messalina's smile never faded. Something about this
woman brought a disturbance within Penelope.
She felt that Agrippa just might be right about her. She also saw several
members of the Praetorian Guard standing nearby. One had his eyes upon
Attia. Attia's heart skipped a beat seeing how handsome and strong he
looked. He was the first that caught her attention since back in Rome. She
later learned that his name was Lucius Cincinnatus.
"I'm off to court to judge some civil cases so I must hurry," Claudius
apologized taking his leave of them.
Messalina followed staring at Attia as well as all the guards. Attia gave
a bright smile to the man she felt attracted to.
After the Emperor left to hold hearing on complaints from the common
people, something that had not been done since Augustus' time, Penelope
and Attia walked back home. They each carried a leather pouch and had the
meat in a basket they shared by toting a handle on each side.
"I saw you looking at that young Tribune," Penelope said knowingly to her
daughter. "He is quite handsome, don't you think?"
Attia didn't deny her attraction to him.
"You will have men of all sizes, ages and wealth knocking at our door
wanting to see you, my dear. As soon as all of Rome knows we're back,
they'll be coming to get to know you in more ways than one."
"I can handle myself in that department," Attia smiled.
"All right," Penelope conceded. "What kind of a man are you looking for?"
"One like Father."
"Those kind of men are rare indeed."
"Did you and Father have relations often?"
"Oh! Now and then," Penelope smiled recalling all the times she showed
herself to him in the nude and he came running to her like a dog in heat.
"Did you ever refuse him?"
"I guess you're a big girl now. I only refused him when I had my blood
flow. But once it was over we got together. How do you think you and
Agrippa were born?"
"So you did it with him only twice?" Attia giggled.
"Yes, only twice," Penelope followed her daughter's giggle with one of her
own.
***
Two weeks later Penelope and Attia were in the bath soaking up the hot
water. The furnace in the cellar was going full blast keeping it as hot as
they could stand it. Attia had learned that the Tribune's full name was
Lucius Cincinnatus, a great great grandson of the hero Cincinnatus who had
beaten back the Carthaginians then went back to his farm in time for
planting. He had been invited this evening to a feast the Lepidius family
were putting on. Attia had her best green velvet gown with a golden belt
awaiting for her on her bed. She was looking forward to meeting Lucius.
Penelope knew of her plans because they were almost the same as when she
set herself up with Maximus.
***
That evening the Tribune arrived with Agrippa. Both were wearing their
armor and swords. Agrippa had warned Lucius that his sister was a great
swordsman as was his mother in days gone by. Lucius was awed at learning
he would be eating at the house of the great woman who had killed Groat
with an arrow across the Weser River.
Attia had arranged herself to sit next to Lucius. Both Gaius and Penelope
recalled when she did the same with Maximus. Having eyes only for him and
letting the rest of the feast go on without paying attention to anyone
else.
"I hear you are a remarkable swordsman," Lucius smiled.
"She is an expert spear thrower and archer," Penelope piped in. "Though
she can't throw a spear like a man, she can hit what she aims for
constantly."
"Maybe you should be in the games," Lucius joked.
"I just practice doing it because Mother wanted me to. Besides the games
are for the gladiators, not women."
"Some women participate. Not many, but a few," Gaius cut in.
"Since when?" Penelope asked.
"Oh, in the last five to ten years, I suppose."
"They are mostly archerers riding in the chariots," Agrippa said.
"I'm not interested in being in the games nor do I want to attend them,"
Attia stated.
"What else is there to do for amusement unless you wish to attend orgies.
I do not feel you would want that either," Gaius laughed.
"I wouldn't mind horse racing," Attia replied. "I think racing a horse
might be a lot of fun and it is good for them to stretch their legs. Plus
it is good for the rider too."
"Will you go with me to inner parts of the arena to see all the animals
down there? I do have admit that it is stenchy but these are brought from
all over our world." Lucius asked. He didn't care what they did just as
long as he was with her. Attia smiled then nodded her head. "I've never
seen some of those before. I would love to go."
"If Agrippa can exchange my place of duty tomorrow, we can go then."
"Consider it done," Agrippa smiled. 'Lucius will be a fortunate man if he
can win my sister's heart,' he thought.
"Then I'll pick you up about midday and we'll make a fun time of it."
"Sounds wonderful," Attia smiled. Penelope shook her head slightly. This
was almost the identical scenario that Maximus had done with her many
years ago.
FOUR
Lucius escorted Attia down to the underworld of the arena where all the
wild animals and gladiators were. The men in the games for today were in
their leather armor and metal helmets. Each one in their own thoughts
wondering if they would live to see another day. For the first time in her
life Attia saw a tiger. It was so much larger than a lion. It bared its
fangs and hissed at her. The animal was caged and didn't pose a threat.
Yet from what her mother told her about seeing a tiger maul a big muscular
man to death in seconds gave her a respect for it. Its fangs were at least
five inches long.
Lucius showed all the animals he knew plus a few he didn't. He asked a
guard the ones he didn't recognized. There was a rhinoceros that looked
like it might give the tiger a run for its money. She smiled as she felt
Lucius' arm about her waist. He was gentle but there was also a strength
in his arms that impressed her.
"YOU!" a man with a barbaric accent pointed to her. "YOU ARE THE BITCH WHO
KILLED MY UNCLE GROAT!"
The man recalled many stories of a Roman girl with long flaming red hair
who had done this to his distant relative. He vowed revenge if he ever had
the opportunity.
"Get back into place," Lucius ordered. "You have to be in arena in a few
minutes."
"It was my mother who killed your uncle," Attia stated. Her heart was
pounding in fear.
"I KILL YOU NOW!" the man drew his sword.
Lucius started for his weapon when Attia moved quickly. Before anyone
could to anything the barbarian had the knife Agrippa had given her deeply
implanted into his chest. The man looked up in shock as if he couldn't
believe what had happened to him. His eyes shut and he fell upon the cold
stone floor on his back. Lucius and the others around them refused to
believe what they had just witnessed. This tiny little woman with long
flaming redhair had just killed the champion of Rome's gladiators. Not
only that, but how fast she had reached into the slit in her gown, drew
the dagger and so accurately threw it at the man who intended to slay her.
"Did you see what you witnessed and heard his threats to her?" Lucius
asked the guard.
"Yes sir, but I don't believe it!" the man sputtered.
Without a word Attia walked over to the barbarian and pulled her knife
from his chest. It was a lot harder getting it out than putting it in. She
found a cloth and wiped off his blood. She put it back into her robe
storing the weapon in its sheath.
"Can we go now? I'm a little upset," she asked Lucius.
Lucius got the guard's name and had him bear witness to what had occured.
"She killed the champion gladiator in Rome, he's called Giganticus," the
guard told him.
Lucuius didn't say a word but the rise in his eyebrow showed that he was
impressed.
In less than five minutes the couple was out of the arena when she started
to sob.
"I've never killed anyone before. Forgive me," she said to Lucius.
"There is nothing to forgive. I never seen anyone move as quickly as you
did with that monster. I was going for my sword and I didn't even have my
grip on the handle when I saw that he was standing there dying."
Attia stepped into his arms and wept over the incident. He hugged her
gently letting her cry. He had a hand stroking her long flaming silky
hair. He felt he could hold her like this forever. Finally she cried
herself out then allowed him to hold her hand as they walked back home. It
was obvious that he had fallen in love with this warrior lady.
***
"So you killed Groat's nephew, good!" Penelope smiled at her daughter
proudly.
"I do not like killing. I know you did but I was hoping that I wouldn't
have to," Attia wept all over again.
"From what you and Lucius said, you had no choice. It was him or you. I
know how you feel. Besides, I don't enjoy killing unless my life or my
family's lives are in danger."
"How do I feel, Mother?"
With Lucius sitting across from them, Penelope whispered into her
daughter's ear, "You want to make love to him."
Attia stared at her mother wide-eyed. Then she nodded.
"Another time," her Mother smiled. "Lucius, I think you should leave now.
Attia's going to lay down and rest. She needs it. You are welcome to our
house anytime."
"Oh yes," Attia affirmed. "Please do come back.......and soon."
"It will be my pleasure. Perhaps we can go riding next time," Lucius
suggested.
"That will be wonderful," Attia pecked him on the cheek. "Thank you for
everything."
***
Lucius found Agrippa making out a report to present to the Emperor
Claudius about the status of the Praetoriun Guard. He knocked on the wall
and Agrippa waved him in. He sat down across from his table watching him
write.
"What can I do for you?" Agrippa asked, impatiently.
"If this is a bad time it can wait."
"Tell me now," he poured out two goblets of wine handing one over to
Lucius.
"Did you hear about what happened at the arena?"
"I got up just an hour ago. I had the night watch, remember?"
"Well your sister killed Giganticus for one thing."
"Attia? Why am I not surprised? Tell me all the details."
Lucius went into a blow-by-blow description of events. The animals,
Gigantitcus' threat, her drawing her dagger and threw it into the man's
heart before anyone could blink. Then the breakdown in tears for killing
the gladiator.
"Just like my mother," Agrippa laughed. "She claims that Attia is better
than she ever was though I find that unlikely. Mother slew two of the
biggest Germans in sword-to-sword combat without a scratch. My father told
me that she was completely in the nude when she did in the second."
"I can see why he would be so distracted," Lucius smiled and took a gulp
of the fine wine. "Anyhow, Attia is supposed to be better than her. She is
faster and has very quick reflexes. I haven't seen my sister in action but
if what Mother say is true, anyone who challenges her is in for the fight
of his life. My Uncle Gaius told me how my mother hurt his leg with a
quick kick and if it were real combat, he would be dead."
"Seeing her handle that knife so quickly, I can see how she might be so
formidable. It was like a bolt of lightning out of nowhere," Lucius
replied. "But that's not the reason I came to see you."
"Let me guess, you are smitten by my sister!"
"I've never been in love with anyone in my life but Attia is always on my
mind. I know that I love and adore her."
"And what does she say about it?"
"We haven't gone that far yet. I was going to tell her but Giganticus kind
of ruined that for now. I'm going back in the morning and tell her how I
feel about her."
"Mother was sometimes a pain in the ass to my father but they got along
fine. If Attia has the same affections for you as you have for her, get
ready for a great adventure because like my mother, she always won't
listen to you and it will drive you crazy. The females in our family have
minds of their own as you already know. If they want it one way and you
wish it another, you'll be like two horses pulling in different
directions."
"I can live with that if she truly loves me," Lucius finished his wine and
waved off another that Agrippa started to pour.
"Your problem is solved at your end, all you have to do is have Attia
proclaim the same for you," Agrippa said cheerfully.
***
Lucius didn't sleep well that night. He got up, washed, shaved, and put a
new uniform under his armor. Then he set off to see Attia. His heart was
in this throat as he rehearsed what he wanted to say to her. He was
feeling high one moment then falling down to a low self esteem the next.
He visioned himself happy as she threw herself at him then a doubt entered
his mind when he saw her rejection of him.
Attia didn't sleep well either. After Lucius left, she went to her room
and masturbated. She felt awful for killing that overly large man but it
also made her horny too. She did it three times before she was satisfied.
She then slept from the afternoon into the night. She got up to get
something to eat then went back to bed with the black bread spread with
grape preserves and some wine. Blowing out the candle, sleep eluded her.
She thought of Lucius and how she thought of him while her hands were in
her sex. She wasn't sure that she loved him, but he was the ideal Roman
man who would make some young woman happy. Throughout the night she
debated whether she wanted him or not. Was there one on the horizon ready
to walk into her life? Or was it Lucius? When dawn came she heard her
mother practicing her archery. Attia got up, cleaned her teeth, brushed
her hair, changed garments because of the cum stained spots on the back of
her gown.
They sat down for a long talk and it finally ended with, "Go with your
heart, dear," Penelope said giving her a kiss on the cheek then her
forehead before going back to the bow.
"Mistress, Tribune Lucius has come to see you!" Isa proclaimed his
presence.
"Have him come out here to the porch, please."
A moment later, Lucius appeared with a big smile on his face. He looked
glassy eyed as if he hadn't slept all night.
'I must be the same,' Attia thought. "Lucius, welcome to our home again,"
she beamed brightly.
"I am always happy in this house," Lucius sat by her.
He watched Penelope hit her target every time. "Your Mother really knows
how to use the bow."
"Yes, she is quite good. She killed Groat with an arrow across the Weser
River."
"So I heard," Lucius replied, not wanting to bring up the subject of
Giganticus. "I came here this morning because I have something to tell
you."
"I think I know what it is," she stood up and took his hand leading him to
the side of the house where they would have more privacy. Both sat closer
together while Attia still kept her hand in his. She felt so tiny like a
small girl holding her father's large hand.
"You want to tell me that you love me and want to marry me, right?"
Lucius smiled, "You read my thoughts entirely. Attia, I am so in love with
you. I never wanted a girl to love until I saw you."
"I have to share something with you. It might mean that you don't want to
marry me."
"What could that be?"
"I love you, Lucius. I know we have seen each other for a month, but
Mother found that she loved my father after only knowing him for less than
that. And they spent over twenty-five years in happiness. So I have to
tell you something about me. I have to have your promise that you won't
say this to anyone else. Not even my mother or my brother. They do not
have any idea what I am about to tell you. But I feel I must be fair to
you. Before I reveal this to you, you must swear that you will never tell
anyone."
Lucius wondered what could be so terrible that he might not want to marry
her, "All right, I give you my promise as a Roman Tribune that I will
never tell another even if I were to be under torture."
Attia looked at Lucius with sad eyes, "I am a Christian."
Lucius batted his eyelids for a moment in surprise. It did not matter to
him what God or gods she worshiped. He stared into those emerald green
eyes that Attia inherited from her mother. He felt like he was drowning in
them.
"Attia, I won't disclose that you are of that persuasion. I have to
confess what your faith means. I see those who openly profess that they
are Christians. They seem to be so happy in their lives. But we are
getting away from what I came here to ask. Will you marry me?"
"Yes, I will," Attia had to stand to be in a comfortable position to kiss
him passionately on his mouth.
When he opened it slightly, her tongue snaked to touch his. After what to
seem like minutes, "Lets tell Mother," Attia pulled Lucius to his feet and
directed their way to Penelope who was now practicing with several spears.
Needless to say, Penelope was not surprised by these turn of events. Her
daughter was of marrying age turned down proposals of rich Romans in
Spain, and always said she would only marry a man she loved. As for
riches, Lucius' family lived modestly with little money, and only with
political connections with the Guard in Caligula's reign did he get into
the Praetoriuns. As it were, he could be discharged for any reason and
sent to the Legions anywhere in the world. Maximus' family had money and
she married him for love. Her father Marcellus was wealthy too due to his
friendship with Augustus.
"I am happy for you both," Penelope hugged her daughter then her soon to
be son-in-law.
"Thank you," Lucius smiled, bursting at the seams.
"When do you two want to wed?" Penelope asked.
"Very soon," Attia smiled.
"You did tell him you are a Christian, didn't you?" her Mother asked.
Attia was tongue tied. How did she know? She never told anyone except Mary
and Isa. She was totally in shock. Lucius saw the surprised look on his
fiancee's face and stepped in.
"Yes she did. My lovely Attia told me all."
"H-how did y-you know?" Attia finally found her mouth.
"I'm your mother. I know of these things. Besides, it takes one to know
one."
"You Mother, a Christian?"
"I try to be. That doesn't mean you can't defend yourself. Only don't go
looking for someone to fight with. I only have done this for my family to
survive and taught you because in this day and age, danger lurks around
every corner."
FIVE
Six months later, Lucius and Attia were married at the Lepidius home in
Ostia. It was just his and her families plus a few friends. The gifts were
not lavish like the ones Penelope received when she wed Maximus in the
presence of the Emperor Augusta. The couple were happy and Lucius promised
never to reveal the secret she told him though her Mother knew about it.
"I want you to have this," Penelope handed her the expensive jeweled
broach that Livia had given her on her wedding day way back when. She
never wore it fearing she might lose it. "It was a gift to me from
Augustus and his wife when your Father and me were married. Now I hope if
you have a daughter you can pass it down to her. I wish for this to be in
our family for generations to come."
"Oh, it is so beautiful. Augustus must have been a very generous man. I
will keep it always. Lucius and me will keep trying until we have a
daughter to give it to on her wedding day."
"Actually it was his wife Livia who gave it to me, but that doesn't matter
any longer."
"I'll make sure it stays in a safe place," Attia said as Lucius came to
her side. "Look darling, Mother gave this to us. We can keep it until our
daughter gets married."
"That sounds good to me. We can get to work on our daughter tonight," he
smiled. Attia gave him a gentle nudge in his stomach with her elbow.
***
On their wedding night, Attia's maidenhood was broken by her new husband.
Everything she had heard from other women and from her Mother was even
better than she imagined. She kept waking Lucius up for more lovemaking.
It wasn't until past dawn when she wound down and fell asleep for a few
hours. Rested, her husband was on guard duty, she got up to practice her
swordplay with her Mother. Penelope kept it up for an hour before claiming
her exhaustion. Attia next got out her bow and shot at wooden dummies a
hundred yards away. She hit each wooden object she aimed at. Eventually
she too felt tired. She bathed with Penelope telling all about her wedding
night with Lucius then ate a small meal. In the afternoon she napped until
Lucius came home for another bout of their honeymoon.
***
Six months later Agrippa was promoted to a Commander of the northern
Legions with the promise of having his same position as leader of the
Praetoriun Guard when the present his time of duty was over. Lucius was
taken with him. Attia insisted going with and argued with her husband
until he gave in. Penelope felt this was a perfect time to get the eagles
back from the barbarians. She told Lucius and Agrippa about where she last
saw them and when. She felt the Germans were not in the least interesed so
they might be outside Arminius' old home. She told them about it at dinner
the day before they left. Attia had a glow in her eye as she listened
silently taking in all the conversation as she ate slowly. Her cunning
mind was at work but she wasn't about to tell this to Lucius until they
reached Gaul. First she had to show her husband how really good she was
handling a sword.
***
Messalina had heard of Attia's slaying of Giganticus. She was intrigued by
the fact that such a tiny girl had the strength and finesse to take down
Rome's greatest gladiator. Word came to her that the redhead had moved so
fast when the warrior started to rush her the guards swore by the gods
that they weren't aware that Giganticus was dead until he fell backwards
hitting his head on the granite block's of the arena's staging area. It
was told that he had died in his sleep and Messalina chose to let it stay
the way it was. Even Claudius was unaware of what really happened.
The beautiful Empress had a strong sexual attraction to Attia. Claudius
was much older didn't have the stamina to keep up with her needs. She had
men she chose on the streets brought to her at all hours of the day to bed
her. She lived in a special wing of the Imperial Palace where her husband
seldom visited. Despite her like for big brawny men with huge penises,
Messalina also had a thing for beautiful young girls. She was brought to
this place when Caligula the ruler and as a joke, he married her off to
Claudius who still practiced his limp and stuttering knowing that if he
played the fool, Caligula would find some entertainment in his uncle.
Messalina had happily married Claudius just to get away from the madman
who ruled the Empire. She honestly feared for her life at that time and
her husband was a way out to live somewhere besides the Palace. She gave
birth to a boy Brittanicus but didn't know whether her son was fathered by
Caligula or Claudius. She found herself to be with child shortly after
their marriage.
She wanted to bring Attia to the Palace for a few days of debauchery.
Perhaps line her up with some men once she had her fill of Attia. However
her plans were temporarily dashed when she learned that Attia had left
Rome with her husband a few days before. She knew that sooner or later the
girl would be back in a year or so then she could make her move. In the
meantime, she expected to find others to please her. Both men and women.
***
It took twenty-six days for the small party, escorted by several guards,
to make the trip from Rome. Attia was able to keep up and seemed
disappointed when the men decided to stop for the day while there was
still daylight. It was cold since spring was a few months away. Attia wore
Penelope's fir coat and leather boots and was quite comfortable making
this trip. They sat by the fire eating rations which Attia was not used to
but was aware that she would make due. Her only thoughts were their pillow
talk once they reached their destination. Agrippa would take over as
commander of the Legions until Carius recovered from a bad wound during a
skirmish with the barbarians. They crossed paths a few days before as he
was taken back to his home in Ostia. The camp physcian told him that he'd
get over his wounds quicker if he just relaxed in the warmer climate by
the sea.
"This will do nicely," Attia said, inspecting the wooden three room house
along the new boundaries at the Rhine River. "I'm looking forward to
staying here with you."
She smiled embracing her husband. Since her introduction to sex on her
wedding night, she wanted it very often. Lucius wondered if he married
Venus the way she kept pestering him. He didn't complain but he did lose
sleep on the trek up here. Most of daylight in the saddle of his horse
then half the night of her insisting on lovemaking. At first, he thought
she might not want to have oral sex since her religion was so stricken
with rules. He was surprised on their wedding night that it was the first
thing she did for him. Her warm mouth about his manhood surprised him. It
turned out that their first act was giving both oral stimulation.
"I think we can be happy here," Lucius held his wife tightly.
"Of course," she smiled. "Oh, how are your ribs doing?"
"Still a little sore," he confessed, recalling their swordplay a few days
back when she moved so quickly after his first thrust and slammed the
wooden sword into his side. He winced then fell to his knees as he gasped
for breath. She dropped her practice weapon and apologized. She really
didn't want to hurt him but he left himself wide open for it.
"Well, we'll practice tomorrow morning and I won't use that trick my
Mother taught me."
"Yes, lets save that for an enemy if they are foolish to tangle with you,"
Lucius grinned. "I just don't want your cock cut off," she giggled in his
ear and bit lightly on his lobe. "No, I want to keep that."
"Shall we inspect the immediate area of our camp so we get to know our way
around?" Attia asked. "I'd like to find the market place so I can buy
things to make your meals."
Lucius pulled her closer so she felt his hardness, "Would like to take
care of this problem first?"
"Of course, but afterwards I want a tour of our camp." She began to
undress.
***
"Darling," Attia cooed quietly in Lucius' ear. "Do you want to be in the
Emperor's favor?"
"I already am," Lucius felt himself drifting to sleep.
They had made love three times that night. They had been there for over
six months and Attia never ran out of stamina in her swordplay or bedplay.
She threw a nude leg over his naked body rubbing her knee to his soft
cock. She wanted to tell him of her plan and hoped to make love one more
time this night. Lucius was happy with her frisky sexy ways, but he just
couldn't keep up with her.
"I mean really be in his favor. Not as a guard but as one of Rome's
greatest heros."
"What are you getting at?" Lucius said sternly.
He knew she had something on her mind. Attia always beat around the bush
when it came to wanting her way.
"Mother told me where the three lost eagles are. You know, the ones that
Varus lost when he fell into that trap," she grabbed his manhood and gave
it a tight squeeze.
Normally females didn't have that much strength in their hands but she did
because of her abnormal ways of wielding a sword. Women of Rome never
found that appealing but she and her Mother did. It was fun and the bath
afterwards with Penelope giving her a wealth of her knowledge of various
things in life.
"Look, they were lost and never found in any of the searches by our men.
Everyone wanted to get their hands on them for the reward. And how in the
hell does your Mother know where they are?"
"Remember it was Mother who was a prisoner of Arminius. She saw them
outside his old house when she made her way back across the Weser River.
They were exposed to the elements right outside of the place she stayed as
the barbarian's guest."
"Then why didn't she tell others when she got back to Rome?"
"She told her father and he told Augustus. Then Augustus sent them on a
wild goose chase all over here but not to where she told my grandfather,"
she felt him stiffening in her hand.
"Hasn't Arminius' old place been destroyed by a fire?"
"Yes, and if I miss my guess no one bothered to look around for anything,"
she kept on working his cock as it got harder. She had one of her fingers
tenderly scratching the bottom of his scrotum. "I think if you and me take
a few men with us back into the forest where Arminius lived, we will find
our eagles."
"You aren't going. I won't put you in that danger!" Lucius insisted.
"I think I can change your mind," she said with a giggle, straddling her
husband and impaling his hardened penis into her pussy. "After all, don't
you want this every night?"
"Let me think about this," he gasped as she began thrusting up and down.
He grabbed hold of her hips to go at his own rhythm.
SIX
The only two who didn't expect any trouble on this day back in Rome was
Claudius and his wife Messalina. He was away at Ostia supervising the
expansion of the port there. He had cleaned out the men who were
overcharging the loading and unloading of grain for the people. Whereas
Messalina was having an open marriage ceremony taking as her new husband
Gaius Silius a very handsome man unlike her own Claudius. She went through
with the ritual with the promise from Gaius that he had men in high places
who could easily kill the Claudius then make himself the new Emperor. She
believed him because' he was a very virile man and could almost keep up
with her.
Messalina had invited nearly everyone who was powerful to the wedding and
felt it was safe to divorce Claudius and marry Gaius. Only word got out
and Claudius' Greek servant Narcissus learned of this in time. He sent a
group of the Praetoriun Guard to march to the Gaius' estate and arrest
everyone there. At first, Messalina thought that the men marching toward
them were friendly. However when they drew their swords and started
slaying many of guests, she realized her plan had failed. One of the
Tribunes of the Guard killed Gaius Silius and then placed the Empress
under arrest for treason.
Narcissus sent a messenger to Ostia for Claudius' immdiate return. The
Empress went into a fury as she was dragged back in chains to the Imperial
Palace. Although she had fucked Gaius Silius many times, it wasn't as man
and wife. Narcissus also planned for her own execution but needed Claudius
to sign the death warrant. When Claudius returned, he was dumb founded by
the whole affair. He read the divorce writ and then the marriage to
Silius. He began drinking much wine and became despondent the more he
drank. He sat there glassy-eyed as Narcissus brought him some documents to
sign. Without looking at them, he signed them all which included her death
warrant and passed out. He had four burly men gently put him in his bed to
stand guard while the Emperor slept in case the relatives of some of the
noblemen and Senators tried assassinating him as a vendetta for the loses
of their own family members.
"I want to see me husband," Messalina insisted to the guards. "I want to
talk to him now!"
"You will see him shortly," one man said, looking at the beautiful woman
in lust.
The Empress couldn't sit so she paced her chambers with chains rattling.
"I will see that you are the first to lose your head," she screamed at
him.
"I'm not so sure," Narcissus said as he entered.
"Where is my husband, the Emperor?" she screeched at him.
"Your husband is resting from his trip back to the Palace. You are
sentenced to death!"
"I want to hear that from my husband himself," she argued.
"He signed the warrant for your death. And he isn't your husband. You had
a writ made out to divorce him."
"I've changed my mind."
"Sorry, you divorced him and I have it in the public record already. You
aren't the Empress any longer, you are now a common gutter slut who has
shamed your position of power and now that you have played, you must pay."
"I'll have your head for this."
Narcissus smiled, "I'm afraid it will be your head. Give her a sword and
five minutes to commit suicide as the honorable way out. If she refuses,
take her head."
He turned and walked out. The guard kneeled to unchain her then handed
Messalina the sword. She held it in her hand but couldn't being it upon
herself to commit suicide. The guard gave her ten minutes, then he stepped
forward, grabbed her by the hair, swung his weapon cleanly taking her head
from her body.
The next day when Claudius awoke, he asked for his wife. Narcissus showed
him the document that he had signed for her death, "She was executed last
night, Caesar." Heartbroken, Claudius cried!
***
With a dozen of his best men, Lucius and Attia took off to find Arminius'
ruins. The map that Penelope drew was very accurate. The men were spread
out a few yards apart from each other. They were on the lookout for any
barbarian bandits that plagued this part of their country. Either they
were being watched or ignored. Attia leaped from her horse and began to
poke around with one of her arrows while her bow had another in case of
ambush. Her mother had told her that the Germans were sneaky bastards and
be on the alert because they could attack from anywhere or at any time.
Attia chose not to tell her husband this bit of the story.
"There's something here," she called out to Lucius.
A few men brought some spades and started digging. They heard the sound of
metal. She fell to her knees and cleaned one off.
"They're our eagles," she shouted happily. "Lucius, look here."
"You get them out," he called back. "We're looking for anyone who might
not like our presence here. Be careful!"
It took her an hour to get all three. The soil that eventually covered
them had preserved these eagles that brought pain and despair to Augustus
and Tiberius. Caligula would have melted them down for their gold value.
They wrapped each one carefully and placed them in a small wagon being
driven by a Gaul.
As they were prepared to leave, loud screams could be heard by as many as
fifty men came out of the woods brandishing their broad swords. Attia
killed two quickly with arrows as the men had their own problems to deal
with. Lucius was worried about his wife but it looked like she didn't need
any help. She didn't have time to draw a third arrow from her quiver as
two men were almost upon her. She easily dispatched the first but the
second gave her trouble.
'He really knows how to use that sword,' she thought as she dodged swings
and hacks.
He was a large man. He stumbled over a rock and she brought her sword down
upon the back of his neck. Attia didn't have time to see if it was a
killing blow as two more rushed her. There were hate in their eyes.
'Good,' she thought as she sent one man down with a slash across his face
and the other she pivoted to thrust her weapon into his side. The dying
man stood there amazed then fell face first in the grass. This almost
identical that Penelope encountered in her home in Rome.
None of the Romans were killed. Two had minor cuts as they watched the
rest retreat and disappear into the woods. Attia herself had slain five of
the barbarians. Lucius ran to her seeing tears in her eyes. The man with
the slashed face ran into the forest right behind the remnants. He looked
back at the woman who had wounded him. Attia saw that she not only cut
open his face but broke his jaw as it hung down as he held his wound
appearing to be much pain.
"Are you all right?"
She nodded, burying her face into her husbands chest. "How about you?" she
asked.
"Nothing except some good screwing will be needed." This made Attia smile.
***
"I don't know what's gotten into you," Attia smarted off with her brother.
Agrippa was furious at not being told of their small expedition. "There
will be enough glory to go around."
"It's not that, I don't want you to get into harm's way, that's all,"
Agrippa complained.
"I wasn't in harm's way," she turned around to show him that she wasn't
wounded.
"Lucius, you should have known better," Agrippa growled.
"She talked me into it. And truthfully we wouldn't have found those eagles
if it hadn't been for Attia. She knew exactly where to look. If it weren't
her, we'd still be digging."
"She talked you into it?" Agrippa questioned. "I thought you had the balls
between your legs. You were crazy to take her along."
"I would have gone anyway," Attia took a long drink of her wine. "He could
tell me not to go but I would have followed them. And when is it your
place to tell me what I can and can't do? I'm an adult, not some child.
I'm not helpless like other women. I can still beat you at swordplay.
Also, I'm not under command. Lucius may be but not me. I think you should
get over it."
"That's not the point. I know you're good but women don't belong on the
battlefield when confronted by a real enemy. Playing with wooden swords is
one thing, fighting with the real thing is another. I am not putting blame
upon you, but it is your husband that needs this reprimand not you."
"Oh bullshit," she said one of her few profanities since her conversion.
"I've got to go and pee. When I get back I want you to have shaken hands
and be done with all this nonsense."
Attia gave a nice kiss to Agrippa's cheek then hugged her husband before
leaving to relieve herself. She hoped they'd be friends again once she
returned.
***
A few months later, Claudius caused a major scandal in Rome by marrying
his niece Agrippina. They claimed that he had lost his mind. She was
middle-aged and had a son named Nero. However Brittanicus was to succeed
his Father to the throne. Agrippina told him she didn't care but it was in
her mind that Nero would be the next Emperor as she started making moves
to get Brittanicus out of the way for her son. Claudius seemed oblivious
to what was going on. He went on his little expeditions to Ostia to see
how the new rebuilt port was coming along. He also was planning for the
invasion of the Britons. The Roman Navy was refurbishing the older ships
while new ones were being built too.
Agrippa and Lucius were to come along on this new land to conquer. Carius
had just returned from his convalescence and was fully recovered from his
wounds. He took command of the two Legions while Claudius was going to
take the XVII on the trip across the channel. It was set for next spring
so Agrippa, Lucius and Attia returned to Rome. They had heard of
Messalina's treason and death. Penelope, having known Claudius in his
teens, went along with them to the Palace to present the newly found
eagles to the Emperor. They were also surprised that he had married
Agrippina. The thoughts of incest was foremost on their minds.
"We have brought you the eagles back from the barbarians," Attia presented
them to the Emperor and Empress at court. "There was a little resistance
from the Germans but none of our men were killed."
"If Augustus lived to see this day he would have done you proud," Claudius
stated.
He gave all three Wreaths of Honor plus exemption of taxes for life to
Lucius and Attia. Penelope had two Wreaths and was exempt from taxes for
years. He presented her with a third Wreath for having knowledge of the
eagles whereabouts.
"I never heard of anyone having three," Agrippina smiled at Penelope,
recalling her stories of Penelope killing Groat and the two assassins bent
on killing her.
As a girl about five years younger, she was in awe of Penelope and
somewhat proud that such a woman could be a great warrior like the
legdendary myths of Amazon Greek women warriors. She remembered the
redhead that married the handsome Maximus Lepidius. Agrippina had a
girlish crush on the man when she was much younger.
"One was deserved, but the other two are questionable," Penelope stated,
having no intention in giving any of the three back.
"I feel you deserve all three," Claudius said. "I wonder if Attia will
ever win another. She is very much like you."
"Thank you, Caesar," Attia beamed. "But I don't want assassins stalking
me. I'll settle for this one."
"Thank you, Caesar," Agrippa and Lucius chorused.
They stayed for the feast in their honor and were amazed how wonderful all
the dishes that were served as they reclined in the immediate deportment
of Claudius and his wife. They talked way into the night until the old
Emperor was feeling too tired to continue the conversations. That was when
the festivities concluded.
Once home, Lucius was very tired but had to see to Attia's sexual needs.
One thing he observed, she didn't want any man but him. Attia let Lucius
go to sleep after their second tryst. He had to leave early to get back to
the Palace with Agrippa to meet with the Emperor regarding the invasion of
the Britons. It seemed as if Claudius had thought this through thoroughly
from the tactics used by Julius Caesar to the weather. Plus he had an ace
up his sleeve he learned about and was having his cavalry practice
charging in a certain manner that would confound the enemy.
***
For some unknown reason, Attia wanted to see the games at the arena.
Lucius was shocked when she brought the subject up. Even though she had
slain Giganticus and several barbarians, the games didn't seem to interest
her.
"I don't know why, I just have this feeling I should go," she told her
husband. "I can't explain it. Something tells me inside that I need to see
them at least once. I don't like men killing other men or animals just for
the pleasure of it."
"Won't you even give me a hint?" Lucius asked. "I mean before we were
married you didn't want to go to the arena except to see the animals. I
know you were fascinated at seeing that tiger but you never desired to see
them fighting."
"I want you to take me this week on a day you are free," she answered.
"After all, I might wish to leave."
"There is this young African who is supposed to be as good as Giganticus
whom I like to see," Lucius stated. "I hear he is unbeatable. Men going
against him sacrifice to their gods so they will have favor in the after
life. He is the blackest of the black. I heard you can only see him in the
dark when he smiles."
"Oh go on," she playfully punched him in his hardened abs. "Now you're
teasing me."
"I'll make sure we go on the day this African fellow is fighting. I'm sure
I'll find it very entertaining," he smiled.
A few days later they entered the arena and were given seats close to
Claudius' box due to them wearing their Wreaths. It was a warm sunny day.
Attia brought along a leather poke of cold water from the aqueduct plus
some black bread in case they got hungry. She was totally unaware that
bread was being tossed to those in attendance. Lucius caught a loaf but
gave it to some older woman and her spouse since they brought their own.
As the games progressed, she didn't see any reason why she should be there
but she was given a strong reason intuitively that she should see this.
The slayings repulsed her. If she was in action, she wouldn't feel that
way until later. But when one was killed, tears fell down her cheeks.
Finally the large African appeared to the roar of the crowd. The other man
looked like he was resigned to his death. After saluting Caesar, they
started with their sparring. It looked to Attia that the African was the
cat and the other was the mouse.
"Look! He leaves himself wide open for a second," Attia pointed out the
