Al little more than two years ago, I was faced with what many men would
have considered a difficult decision, which turned out to have been a
blessing in disguise. Several non-malignant tumors had been found in my
testicles and prostate, while they were not life threatening my Doctor
assured me that they could very easily become cancerous if left
unchecked. In addition, they were causing pain so ignoring them was
rapidly not becoming an option. The doctor wanted to remove not only the
tumors but the effected organs as well. So I was faced with the surgical
removal of the prostate and a bilateral orchotomy.
During the preparation for the operation it was discovered that the tumor
had started in the testicles and spread via the vas deferens to the
prostate. An exam of the x-rays showed early stages of a tumor had
started in the erectile tissue of the penis. The doctors explained that
they wanted to remove the erectile tissue as well, but would leave the
rest of the penis to allow for urination. They reassured with the lack of
testicles and testosterone blocking androgens I would be prescribed that
my sex drive would diminish to the point I would not miss the ability to
have an erection. I really didn't have much choice but to agree with the
doctor's assessment.
My wife was very supportive during this time and while we had never been
an overly sexually active couple, we did always enjoy intercourse with
each other. Prior to the surgery we tried to have sex one last time, but
the tumors had done their damage and I was unable to become erect enough
to penetrate her.
She and I talked and although she had never shown any lesbian tendencies,
she made a comment that since I was losing the male sex organs it was too
bad that the doctors couldn't just make a vagina and then at least I
could enjoy sex the way she did. I gave the idea some considerable
thought. I have always admired women and have been a closet cross dresser
for years. This would give me an unplanned chance to experience life as
the opposite sex.
I mentioned the idea to my doctor just because to me, it seemed like a
viable option. At first he was totally against it. He explained that sex
reassignment surgery involved a large system of checks and balances to
insure it was the right thing for the patient. I argued that I didn't
have time for a many months of therapy and what he called a "real life
test" or to adjust to hormone treatments. I also pointed out that I was
going to lose my male genitals because of the tumors, and part of the
post operative treatment involved testosterone blockers and low does of
estrogen which are going to provide feminizing effects whether I liked it
or not.
Since I seemed to have strong feelings about this, he agreed to at least
let me talk with a specialist that deals with transsexualism and if she
would agree to it and we could find a surgeon that would agree he would
recommend sex reassignment as an alternative method of treatment for me.
I met with a therapist that had years of experience dealing with
transgendered patients. I explained to her my predicament that I was
faced with losing my male sex organs due to disease and that I wanted to
have the doctors continue the surgery and give me female genitals
instead. We talked about my background and how I had been secretly cross-
dressing for years and had sometimes thought about what it would be like
to be a woman. We also explored how I would deal with becoming a female
and how normally it is important to live as a member of the opposite sex
before having reassignment surgery to be sure it is really what is right
for you and also because the surgery is non-reversible. The therapist
understood my problem with a lack of time before the surgery and as long
as I agreed to remain in therapy after the surgery she would be willing
to recommend reassignment surgery for me. I told her that after the
operation, since I would essentially be a man with a vagina I wanted
begin the recovery process as a man. As I regained my health and the
effects of the hormone treatment took place I would make the transition
to life as a female full time. At first she was in complete disagreement,
she felt that I would better adjust to having female genitals if I jumped
in with both feet and woke up and lived as a woman from that point on. We
argued the point for a while before we came to understand each other.
Since I had not made any transition efforts to that point, I felt it
would be too much of a shock to change the sex of my genitals and change
genders all at once. I argued that there was much more to being a woman
than just having a vagina between your legs.
The therapist argued that I might change my mind after I recovered from
the surgery and would decide that I would have been happier remaining as
a male but would be stuck with female genitals. I countered that would be
a possibility but either way, I was going to lose my male parts and that
by having the surgery first and then gradually easing into the
transition, it would give me a chance to learn about my new parts the way
young girls learn of theirs. As children, girls have a chance to learn
about their bodies before they begin to associate their vaginas with sex.
This time would also give me a chance to take care of my facial hair and
learn all about being female, mannerisms, and speaking in a more feminine
sounding voice. She also told me to expect a loss of sensation in that
area from the trauma of the surgery so I shouldn't expect to much in
terms of having orgasms especially not right away. She did say that many
transsexual women do eventually develop the ability to have orgasms
through healing and practice. Eventually we came to an agreement and the
therapist set up a meeting with a surgeon.
The surgeon explained how the surgery would occur would occur, and showed
me pictures of a similar operation. He said that since the goal was to
remove the tumors as well as reassign my sex, the surgery would be
somewhat more complicated. First he would remove the tumors but in doing
so would work to preserve the tissue needed for the creation of the
vagina. He said he would begin by removing the testicles. When they were
gone he would make an incision and remove the erectile tissue in the
penis followed buy the removal of the prostate. He would then work on
creating a vagina and its associated parts. He said that initially the
appearance would look slightly different from other women's but after the
initial surgery had time to heal they would do a second operation to
improve the appearance of the vulva to make it look natural. Once the
second surgery healed it would look like it had been there from birth.
Before we left he reinitiated that the surgery could not be reversed and
that I was sure I wanted to go through with it. He reassured me that this
was not the only option and that many men in the same position have had
the surgery to have their penis and testicles removed and adapted to
being a eunuch and that would be much easier than going through the
social transition of becoming the opposite sex. I reassured him that I
had made up my mind, I had given both sides a great deal of thought and I
felt that becoming a woman was the right thing to do. I looked at it as a
unique opportunity that many people never have, to live as a member of
both sexes. I reminded him of my long standing feelings that I wanted to
be a girl from the time I was quite young and that while I realized it
would be difficult at times, I had a very good support group to help me
along the way.
The next day I went to the hospital with butterflies in my stomach. I was
nervous about having major surgery, sad about losing my male parts, but
excited about the opportunity of getting to experience life as a female.
Would it be so different? I wondered as I checked in. After the last
meeting with the doctor, one of the surgical nurses reassured me that I
would be ok. She told me she thought I was making the right choice, and
that she hoped I would be able to be happy as a woman. After all the pre-
operation preparation, I was wheeled into the operating room and as the
anesthesiologist administered the medication and I stared up at the
bright surgical lights. I began to think, what really are the differences
between being a male or a female. Certainly there were physical
differences, but would having a vagina physically "feel" much different
than having a penis? I guessed that after everything healed it would
pretty much feel "normal" down there except of course during sex. So
before I could no longer remember anything I decided that the biggest
differences between the two human sexes were mainly social. Men treat
woman differently than they do other men, and women treat other women
differently than they act towards men.
When I awoke, I was nauseous and felt a dull ache in my groin. The
doctors assured me that everything had gone fine with the surgery. The
recovery was a slow process. It took nearly a week to heal enough to
remove the catheter. After that was removed the first order of business
was to check the plumbing to make sure I could urinate properly without
difficulty. Thankfully that all worked out well, it was as they say a
happy ending, as "everything came out ok."
As part of the recovery process I had to dilate my new vagina several
times a day everyday. At first it was just painful, but later it just
became tedious. Since my penis had not shrunk from years of hormone
replacement therapy, the surgeon was able to create a vagina that was
deeper than many and he thought it was enough to allow intercourse with
nearly any size man. Although true to their word, with the massive
changes in hormones, sex was not really of much interest.
The hormones were an adjustment at first, wow estrogen is mean stuff. I
went through hot flashes, it seemed I was never comfortable, either too
hot or too cold. For a while I was feeling depressed but eventually
things just settled down and now I feel much calmer than I did before. As
a man I was kind of hyper but now I am generally quite calm. The physical
changes from the hormones were fairly gradual. I noticed my skin become
softer and the hair on my arms became much softer and finer. Over several
months, I noticed my shape became more feminine, my hips and butt became
more rounded, and my waist was slightly more defined. My breasts were
more sensitive and slowly got "puffy" they really didn't get that much
larger just slightly better defined.
About 6 to 8 months after the surgery, between the laser hair removal on
my face and the effects of the hormone changes my friends started to
notice, or at least it became noticeable enough for them to say
something. They new I had been castrated and lost most of my penis during
the surgery and most all knew that I was taking prescribed female
hormones. Only a few people knew that I had the surgery carried out to
include sex reassignment. People began to tell me that I was starting to
look more like a woman, and ask if I was thinking about becoming a woman
because of all the changes. At first I answered I didn't know, and
gradually I started telling them I was considering becoming a woman.
Surprisingly my friends were supportive, the same people I had heard make
fun of transsexuals in the past were strangely supportive almost
encouraging me to go through with it.
After a couple more months, after talking with my wife and the therapist,
it was decided I was ready to make the change completely. I would legally
become a woman. By this point I had a vagina for a year and was
physically used to it. I had adjusted to the female hormones and once
again felt "normal." They continued to do their work and my chest had
developed into A cup breasts, and I was wearing a bra nearly everyday.
Since my friends, family and co-workers had grown used to seeing my
feminine appearance, it seemed nobody was shocked when I told everyone
that due to the side effects of the treatments I decided I would be
happier living as a woman. Most had already made that connection in their
mind.
When I made the decision, my therapist and I decided to schedule the
second part of the sex reassignment surgery the labiaplasty, which would
finish off the appearance of my vagina. I also wanted to have some
plastic surgery on my face to give me more feminine features.
Both surgeries were successful, and I healed in a few weeks. The face
surgery was a long recovery but I am happy with how I look. After the
labiaplasty healed, several of my girlfriends wanted to see what it
looked like. When I showed them they were shocked, as they all agreed it
looked "real."
After the legal issues of changing my name, birth certificate, passport
and professional licenses were taken care of I returned to work.
It has been nearly two years since the initial surgery and a year since
everything was finalized. I think I have adjusted to my new gender well.
I am somewhat surprised at how I feel as a woman. It is strange having
been what I thought was a normal male for 30 years I feel fine about
being a woman now. In some ways I feel more comfortable as a woman, like
it is how I was supposed to be from the beginning. Granted there are some
things about life as a woman I don't appreciate. Since I have to sit when
I pee, the cleanliness of pubic bathrooms is much more of an issue to me
now. Guys always think that having to sit down to pee is such a handicap.
In reality it is not that big of a deal, ok it takes me 5 seconds longer
to pull my pants down a little farther and do a quick wipe after, really
who cares? The plumbing works and it is no big deal.
When I made the legal change of sex with the state my wife and I had to
get a divorce since same sex marriages were not legal. To her credit,
even though it was hard for her she has remained very supportive of my
change. We still live together although we have started to date other
people. We have started double dating, and she set me up with a guy she
worked with. I was surprised to find him attractive and after several
dates we expanded our relationship to include sex. Since he worked with
my former wife he knew of my background. And he admitted that at first he
was just agreeing to go out with me to be nice, but after a while he
decided that I was really a woman and could accept my past. After taking
my female cherry, he laughed and told me that he had no doubt that I am
all woman.
I was pleasantly surprised that I really enjoy sex as a woman. I had not
been gay prior to the surgery but I have found that I really enjoy being
on the receiving end of a penis. Foreplay is much more important as woman
than it was as a man. With out any foreplay, sex just sort of happens,
about the time I start to get aroused he squirts his stuff and pulls out,
but if we take time and play first I get way more aroused and then am
much more into intercourse and actually enjoy his ejaculation. So there
is a much bigger spectrum between good sex and mediocre sex as a woman. I
have to say that good sex as a woman is better than good sex as a guy,
but the trade off is it is much harder to have good sex as a girl than as
a guy. As a guy you are almost guaranteed an orgasm but as a woman sex is
usually good but a great orgasm is much harder. I usually have better
chances of getting an orgasm from him giving me oral sex than from having
his penis inside me. I have also surprised myself buy starting to enjoy
giving him oral sex, something I never thought I would do let alone ever
enjoy. Somewhat surprisingly the feeling of his penis rubbing the inside
of my vagina when he thrusts into me feels very sexual and similar to the
what I used to feel on the shaft of my penis when I would have sex with
my wife.
Overall I actually enjoy being a woman. Somewhat surprisingly, it is
really not that much different than being a guy, now that I have gotten
used to everything it simply feels normal. I still go to work, enjoy the
many of the same things and lead a healthy happy life. The tumors are now
a thing of the past. At first when I found out I was going to lose my
male parts I was devastated, I am so glad I was able to convince the
doctors to let me become a woman. I continue to see the therapist, and
she is pleased with my progress. If someone would have told me 5 years
ago that today I would have gone through a divorce, and a sex change and
be living as a happy healthy woman dating a great guy that I enjoy being
intimate with I would have thought they were crazy. Funny thing is, that
is exactly what happened and to me it is now like a dream come true.
My ex-wife and I remain close friends. I guess was somewhat right about
the biggest difference between life as a man and life as a woman being
social. I am much closer to my female friends now and while I still
associate with my male friends, I do look at them differently. While it
has taken some adjustment and it has not been easy, I am very glad I made
the decision I did. If I had the chance I would do it all over again. I
am not suggesting that changing your sex is the answer for every male
faced with the decision I had. But for me being a woman was the right
choice.
