To all of my readers, thank you for the kind comments you left me. For
many reasons that will come out in future installments, I have not had a
chance to work on my story for a while. I hope you enjoy this chapter and
I promise I will try and finish the next chapter sooner.
Suzie's New Life (Chapter 6)
When we arrived at the airport, it was 42? and very dreary. In an hour
and a half, we landed in San Diego to sunny and warm, 64?, weather. I
could immediately understand why people love to live down there. We
checked into the condominium, that Mom and Betty had rented. The
condominium had three bedrooms, Mom and Betty shared one, Jennifer, I
shared the one with twin beds, and Laurie had her own. While I was
becoming Suzie again, Mom and Betty went to Safeway to pick-up some food
for breakfast. By the time they returned, it was time to for dinner. We
decided to dress up and go to dinner. I wore the dress that Laurie had
bought me when were went shopping in San Francisco.
Mom asked the condominium's manager for a recommendation where to eat.
She strongly recommended eating at George's at the Cove over looking the
La Jolla cove, arguably the most beautiful spot in San Diego. George's
was first class and wonderful. When we arrived, a valet parked our car
for us and the receptionist seated us at a booth with a fantastic view of
the cove. As we looked out the window, the sun was just starting to set.
What a romantic setting. Mom and Betty just sat a little closer, to each
other, and watched the water and the sun setting. Laurie, Jennifer and I
all felt left out because we did not have anyone there to share the
moment with. The waiter came and gave us their specials and we ordered.
We all agreed that George's was one fantastic restaurant.
After dinner, we went to the Mission San Diego de Alcala for Christmas
Eve Mass. The Mission is the oldest church, of any kind, in California.
While we are not Catholic, we felt it would be appropriate to attend the
mass. We were welcomed and made to feel at ease.
By the time we got back to the condominium, it was well past midnight. No
one felt tired so we decided to exchange gifts. Everyone brought small
gifts, mainly jewelry. Mom and Betty exchanged "friendship" rings and
asked us what we thought of combining our homes. While this did not shock
us, the idea seemed a little strange and it took us by surprise.
We talked it over for almost an hour and finally agreed that it would be
fantastic. We decided that, since our house was larger, Betty and
Jennifer would move in with us and Betty would rent or sell her house.
The subject came up about my transition and my future. They asked me, if
I did decide to start living as Suzie full-time next year, did I want to
stay at Johnson High or transfer to another school. I told them that I
would really like to start "fresh" at a new school. Jennifer said she did
not really want to change schools her senior year but, she would do it
for me. Mom and Betty said, "If this was what I wanted, we would start
looking this spring and summer for a place to move." Before we knew it,
it was past 2:00 am and we all crashed.
I was the first to wake up. I went down to the kitchen and made coffee.
Soon Jennifer, then Laurie and finally Mom and Betty got up. As we sat
around the table eating breakfast, we discussed what we wanted to do
today. We decided to go the San Diego Wild Animal Park. It was one of the
few places open on Christmas Day. It was amazing, I had been to the zoo
before, but I never had been this close to "wild" animals before. We
rode, actually stood, in the back of the Photo Caravan Safari flatbed
truck, through the park. A giraffe stuck its head in the back of the
truck and so we were able to pet and feed it. We spent all day at the
Park and stopped at the de Medici Cucina Italiana restaurant for dinner.
Saturday and Sunday, we went to Old San Diego, the beaches and Tijuana.
Monday came around too fast and they took me to the airport. An hour and
a half later, I was back in the cold dreary weather. Megan met me at the
airport. On the way home, she asked if I wanted to stay with her this
week. I told her that I would love to, but I had to stop by home to get
some clean clothes for work.
When we got home, there were messages on our answering machine from Mom
and Diane. Diane invited me to a New Year's Eve party she was having and
if I was interested to call her. I called her and said I would love to
come to her party but, while I could get a ride there, I did not have a
ride home. She asked me if Jennifer and Bill wanted to come too. I told
her that I thought they already had plans to go to another New Year's Eve
party. She then asked me if I wanted to spend the night. I told her that
I would ask Mom.
Mom wanted me to call her so she knew I made it home safely. I called her
and told her that I would be staying with Megan and asked her if it would
be all right if I went to Diane's party and spent the night. She said yes
as long as it was ok with her parents.
I called Diane back and told here that as long as it was ok with her
parents it was ok for me to spend the night. She did not think it would
be a problem. After last my encounter with Diane and her friends, they
found out about Robert. They were amazed that I showed no signs of being
a boy at the Halloween party. She thought they would understand, but
would ask them anyway.
Megan and I left the house and went to her apartment. I put my things
away in her spare bedroom and we chatted until dinnertime. Rodger came
over and all three of us went out for pizza. I had not seen Rodger since
Thanksgiving, though I had talked to him a couple of times. I was afraid
that I would be nervous seeing him again. However, I was surprised when I
realized that I could accept him as a friend.
At work, all Megan could talk about was Rodger. Seeing them together, I
could tell that they were head over heels in love with each other and I
was very happy for them. We got back to her apartment around 9:30 and I
excused myself and went to bed. I am not sure when or if Rodger went home
that night.
Tuesday morning came early; I must have been tired because I slept for
almost 9 hours without waking. Megan woke me up with just enough time to
shower and get ready for work. Getting dressed, doing my hair and make-up
has become automatic. I did not even have to think about what I was
doing. I wore a skirt, short sleeve top, panty hose and flats.
Megan let me drive to work and said that she thought I was a good driver.
I told her that I wanted to get my driver's license with-in the next
couple of weeks and that Mom said she would buy me a car. However, I had
to pay for the insurance and keep my grades up.
Tuesday was slow, though I made many appointments for the end of the
week. Sarah and Megan gave me a chance to help them doing a couple of
perms and color. The phone rang around 1:00 and I answered it.
"Total Look Salon, this is Suzie may I help you?"
"Hi Suzie this is Connie Johnson...You set my hair the last time I was in
there...I would like to make an appointment, with you, this week for a
wash and set."
"I would love to Mrs. Johnson but I am not sure I can. I am not
licensed."
"Ask Jackie and see what she says."
I asked Jackie and she said it would be all right. However, since I am
not licensed I could not charge her for my services. I said thanks.
"Mrs. Johnson, Jackie said I could but it will be free. I can not charge
you because I am already getting paid and I am not licensed."
"Well then I would love to make an appointment with you. What do you have
open?"
"How about 10:00 tomorrow...I will see you then."
I could not believe it; I had my first customer even though I would be
doing her hair for gratis, so to speak. Sarah had some free time at 10:00
and she said she would help me if I needed it. I told her thanks.
Sarah had an appointment cancel in the afternoon and asked me if I wanted
her to redo my highlights. I said I would love to have her do them for
me. However, this time I wanted them a little less subtle, just about a
shade lighter. She talked me into letting her do 3 different shades. She
explained that she would weave out sections of my hair, use a mixture of
2 oz. of Matrix's Hi-Tones Ash Ash and 2 oz. of 30 Volume SoLite and wrap
my hair in foil. This would be close to the color of my current
highlights. On the next weave, she would use a mixture of 2 oz. of Hi-
Tones Ash and 2 oz. of 30 Volume SoLite, which would be a shade lighter
and wrapped in foil also. On the hair that was sticking out between the
foils, she would use a mixture of 2 oz. of Color Sync 6RC, 2 oz. of Color
Sync 8WN and 4 oz. of Activator, which would be close to my current
chestnut brown.
She sat me down in her chair. Working with the natural parting of my
hair, she created a veil in a narrow eye shape 1/2" on either side of my
part, extending below crown in back and she clipped the hair out of way.
Then starting 1" back from my hairline, below the veil section, Sarah
created V-shaped sections, including shorter and longer lengths of hair,
around my head. The sections through the back of my head, between my
crown and occipital bone, were lower than the front ones. She clipped the
sections to secure them.
Beginning at front, side, triangle section, she picked up a medium-sized
diagonal slice of hair, weaved out part of the hair, applied the Ash Ash
color and enclosed it in foil. She repeated the same procedure on the
next section but using the Ash color. She repeated this until interior of
first subsection was complete.
She continued doing this until all of the V-shaped sections were
complete. She then applied the brown hair color to all of the hair
outside of the foils. She put me under the dryer and timed me for 15
minutes.
I have found that sitting under the dryer always gave me time to think. I
was thinking how happy I was to be working there and that I was much
happier than I had been in years. Even though I have been working almost
25 hours a week, my grades in school were actually much improved. The
only B I received, on my mid-term report card, was in Spanish. I started
thinking about if I wanted to start my bicycle racing this spring when
Sarah said it was time to finish up.
We went over to the sink and I lay back while she shampooed and
conditioned my hair. We went back to her chair and I could not wait to
see how my hair turned out. Sarah said I had a few split ends and asked
if I wanted a trim. I said, "Yes thanks." She trimmed my hair, taking
only a half of an inch off. She proceeded to blow dry and style my hair
for me. By the time she finished, it was time to go home. I looked in the
mirror and immediately noticed the, little less subtle, changes. I loved
the way my hair looked. I gave Sarah a big hug and said thank you. I
tried to pay her but she said, "No but you can buy me lunch tomorrow." I
said I would love to.
Megan and I met Rodger downtown at Il Fornaio Gastronomia Italiana
restaurant for dinner. Rodger immediately noticed and commented on my
hair. He said it looked very good on me. Unfortunately, during dinner
Rodger and Megan were so much into each other that I was feeling left
out. I could tell that they were very much in love, which made me happy
for them. Especially since, I was the one to introduce them.
After dinner, we went to the theater and saw Titanic. At the end, Megan
and I were crying and Rodger had the "what is the big deal" look on his
face. I immediately fell in love with Leonardo DiCaprio.
Megan and I said good night to Rodger and drove back to her place. On the
way, we talked about the movie, about work, about Rodger and about me.
She told me that she was head over heels in love with Rodger. I started
laughing and said "Duh! You would have to be blind not to see that. There
were a couple of times tonight I was going to pour cold water on you
two." We both laughed.
When we got back to her apartment, I went to bed and she called Rodger.
After all, she had not seen him in like 30 minutes. I was sad that I did
not have someone like that.
Wednesday was busier and Thursday, New Year's Eve, we were booked solid.
At 9:55, Mrs. Johnson came in for her, and my first, wash and set. I took
her over to a sink and had her layback while I washed and conditioned her
hair. We were making small talk. She told me again that I was lovely and
how much I reminded her of her granddaughter Lindsay. Lindsay, who was 16
also, lived in Texas with Mrs. Johnson's son and daughter-in-law. Mrs.
Johnson saw her only once or twice a year and dearly missed her.
I finished washing her and took her over to the empty chair that Erica
had used. Sarah came over and gave me a comb and some rollers to use. I
combed some setting gel through Mrs. Johnson's hair and proceeded to roll
her hair. I could see Sarah, Megan and Jackie were all at one time or
another, watching me as I worked. I must have been doing something right
because they just let me work without correcting me.
During this time, Mrs. Johnson asked me all sorts of questions. Where did
I go to school, what did I like to do for fun, did I have a boyfriend,
was I thinking of becoming a hairstylist...etc. At first I was very
nervous, but the more I worked and the more I chatted with Mrs. Johnson
the more comfortable I became. Before I knew it, I was finished. I put a
hair net on her and put her under the dryer.
Jackie came over and commented on the good job I had done. While Mrs.
Johnson was drying, I went back to my work stocking supplies and doing
general clean up. Soon Mrs. Johnson was finished and I took her back over
to "my" chair. I gently unrolled her hair and Sarah came over and showed
me how to comb her out. Soon I was finished. Mrs. Johnson was very happy
with the results and tried to pay me. I said thanks but I could not take
any payment since I did not have a license and Jackie was already paying
me. She handed me $10 and said, "Just call this a tip." She then asked if
she could make a standing appointment for once a week. I asked Jackie and
she said yes. I went to the book and set her up for every Wednesday at
3:30.
The rest of Wednesday and all day Thursday was very hectic. I received
phone calls from two of Mrs. Johnson's friends, Marie Getty and Joanne
Armstrong asking for appointments for a wash and set. Again I asked
Jackie and she said it was ok. I made appointments for them on Tuesday
afternoon.
I told Jackie that I really appreciated that she let me make the
appointments. However, I felt guilty that she was paying me and not
making anything off my work.
She said, "Do not worry honey, it will all work out. I have a feeling
that you are going to make me lots of money, in the end. Anyway you have
brought two new clients into the salon and that is a good thing."
Sarah had a break at 12:30 so we went around the corner to a little caf?
for lunch. She asked how I liked working there fulltime and I said I
loved it and was having a ball. She remarked how well I interacted with
the clients and that I seemed to have the knack for doing hair. I told
her that I was thinking about going to cosmetology school after I
graduated from high school.
Wednesday night, after work, Rodger came over to Megan's and I cooked for
all of us. After dinner, I called Diane to talk about her party. She said
most of the kids coming, go to the same high school that she does. She
laughed and said there was going to be several cute guys coming. I
laughed saying, "That is all I need right now." I asked her what I should
wear and she suggested causal or dressy causal. The party was starting
around 7:00. She had asked her parents, about me staying over, and they
were ok with it. They had an extra bedroom since her older sister, Joni,
had moved out. I told her that I had to work until 6:00, but I would get
there as soon as I could. We talked for almost an hour.
Mom called to let me know that they were having a fantastic time and
Laurie and Jennifer would be flying in at noon tomorrow. She and Betty
decided to stay over until Sunday. I told her that Diane's parents said
it was ok for me to stay over at Diane's New Year's Eve. I asked Mom if I
could go and take me driver's license test soon and she said yes.
Thursday, being New Year's Eve, was going to be very busy. Jackie had me
start scheduling appointments at 7:00 am and to have everyone finished by
6:00. I did not even schedule in lunch breaks. Because Saturday was going
to be slow, she said she was going to close the salon so we all had a 4-
day weekend.
By the time 6:00 came around, we were all dragging. Jackie was staying
home tonight, Megan and Rodger were just going over to some friends for a
quiet evening, Sarah and her new boyfriend, Alan, were going out to
dinner and meet up with some friends later.
This was the first any of us heard about Alan, so naturally we all had to
quiz her about him. He was 30 and they had met jogging and really hit it
off. She was afraid to talk about him because she thought it might jinx
their relationship. We all laughed and said we had to meet him.
Megan drove me home; I gave her a big hug and thanked her for letting
stay with her. She said, "I loved having you stay with me. You are like
the sister I never had. You are welcome anytime." I gave her another hug
and said, "Have a great time tonight."
I walked into the house and Laurie, John, Jennifer and Bill were all
there. We talked for a few minutes, John was actually starting to warm up
to me. It was getting late; I had to excuse myself to get ready. Jennifer
said that she and Bill would drop me off at Diane's party.
I took a quick shower, set my hair in hot rollers, got dressed and did my
make-up all in 30 minutes. I wore a pair of black slacks, a long sleeve
silk top and black boots with 3" heels. I put on the pair of pearl
earrings and a pearl on a gold chain Mom had given me for Christmas. I
took the hot rollers out of my hair and teased the curls with my fingers
just breaking them up.
I walked into the living room and got a complements from everyone,
including John. We all walked out to the car and John pulled me aside
saying he was sorry he was such a jerk to me. He did not really
understand why I was doing all of this. However, it seemed important to
my family and me and he hoped I would accept his apology. I said, "Yes I
would." I gave him a hug, a kiss on the cheek and said, "Thank you; you
do not know how much this means to me."
By the time they dropped me off, it was almost 7:30 and most of the kids
had already arrived. I said hi to Diane's parents and thanked them for
letting me spend the night. They are both very nice people. I found out
that Diane's father was a lawyer and her mom was an ob-gyn. Diane
introduced me to the other kids. They were all juniors and seniors from
her high school. The only people I knew there was Mike and Janet. It did
not take me long to realize that everyone was a couple except for me and
this cute guy named Brad. I laughed and accused her for trying to set me
up. She smiled and said, "Guilty as charged. I have known Brad for years
and he is a nice guy. I thought you two might hit it off."
The party was very nice. Diane's parents hired a DJ and a caterer for the
food. While I was getting some food, Brad came over to get his food and
said, "Hi." We sat down and talked. I was nervous thinking, "This is
Rodger all over again." Nevertheless, Brad was very easy to talk with. He
had just graduated mid-term and was leaving in 2 weeks for UCLA. He had
just broken up with his girlfriend, of 2 years, and was not looking for
another one. I was not sure if I was disappointed or relieved. We talked
and danced. It was nice to be with a guy and have no pressure. The last
thing I needed now was to become involved with someone.
During the evening, I had the opportunity to chat with and get to know
most everyone there. By the end of the night, I felt I had made some very
good friends. I started thinking that maybe I should think about
transferring to Rio High next year. Mike and Janet invited me to a
Valentine's Day swing dance party they were going to. I said I would love
to go. Janet said everyone was going in period costumes and she would
help me find something if I would like.
Before I knew it, it was midnight and I was dancing a slow dance with
Brad. I found myself thinking that I wish he were not leaving for school.
Everyone started to countdown to the New Year. Without even thinking, I
closed my eyes and started kissing Brad. We were oblivious to everyone
else. Soon I heard laughter and some of the kids saying, "Hey are you two
going to come up for air?" We both turned beet red went and sat down. We
were both wondering where that kiss came from. We talked for an hour and
decided that since he was leaving, it would be best not to get involved,
though it was clear that we were both attracted to each other.
About 1:00, everyone started going home. Brad asked me if he could drop
me off somewhere. I said thanks, but I was spending the night here at
Diane's house. I walked him out to his car and said goodnight. He gave me
a kiss on my cheek and said, "I do like you a lot." With that, he got in
his car and drove off, leaving me with an empty feeling inside me.
I went inside the house and Diane was beaming.
"I thought you two would hit it off. When you two kissed, I knew you guys
made a connection. Are you going to see him again?"
I started to cry, "Probably not. He is leaving in two weeks to go to
school; he just broke up with Sandra and is not interested in dating
anyone now."
"I am so sorry. I probably should not have tried to set you up."
"No not at all, I am so glad you think enough of me to want to. I know
someone is out there it is just a matter of time for me to find him.
Besides knowing that guys are attracted to me is a huge boast to my ego."
We talked for almost an hour and decided it was time to go to bed. She
showed me where I was sleeping and I slept until 9:00. I got up and found
that Diane was still asleep, but her parents were up. I went out and
thanked them again for letting me spend the night. Both were curious
about my transitioning. Shelly (Dr. Matson) asked me if I was seeing a
doctor now. I said yes that I was seeing Dr. Snow. She said that Lisa
Snow was an excellent doctor and to follow her instructions to the
letter. I told them that I hoped to go fulltime by summer. Don said if I
needed any legal help to have Mom contact him. I said thanks and I would.
Diane came in and said good morning to everyone. We talked while Shelly
cooked us breakfast. They asked me if I had any other plans for this
weekend. I said no, I have Saturday off, so I will probably just study to
get a head start on the next semester. It turned out that they were
leaving early Saturday morning, driving to Pacific Grove and spending the
night. Shelly's parents left her a small house there, which they use for
a weekend home.
"Suzie, I know this is short notice, but if it is alright with your Mom
and my Mom and Dad, would you like to come with us?"
"Yeah I guess...yes it would be fun."
Don and Shelly said that they would love to have me come. Don was meeting
some friends for a 12:00 tee time at the Spyglass Hill Golf Course, so
they were planning to leave at 6:00. Shelly suggested that I spent the
night again. I said I would have to try to call my Mom; she was still in
San Diego. They let me use their phone. Mom and Betty were just getting
ready to go out for breakfast. She said that if it was all right with
Diane's parents, then it was ok with her.
"Suzie, I love your highlights, since you are spending the night again,
do you think you could do mine for me?"
"Sure, haven't you found a stylist yet? What did you have in mind?"
"Not yet, I have been growing my hair out, so I have not needed to go to
a salon, until now. I want something less subtle than yours, more
dramatic."
"I can do that, let me call Jackie and see if I can get the stuff I need
from the salon."
I called Jackie and told her what Diane asked me to do. I asked her if I
could take some of the supplies from the salon and I would pay for them
later.
She said, "That will be fine. Be careful that you do not over process her
hair. Where are you planning on doing her hair?"
"We are just going to do it here at her house."
"Would you like to use the salon? My husband is watching the bowl games
on the TV. If you want I could meet you there and make sure you do it
right."
I asked Diane and she said sure.
"Thank you Jackie, I really appreciate it. Can we meet at 11:00?"
"11:00 it is."
We finished breakfast and helped Don and Shelly clean-up last night's
party. We then took our showers and got dressed. Diane drove me by home,
to pick-up some more clothes, leave Laurie a note and to the salon. As we
arrived, we realized that we had not said anything to Diane's parents
about getting highlights.
"Oh well we will surprise mom and dad."
I let us into the salon and had her look through some pictures to see
what she wanted. Jackie came in and I introduced her to Diane. Jackie
asked Diane what she wanted. Her hair was already a light brown, wavy and
just to her shoulders. She decided on a technique called spinning lights,
which would give her blonde highlights "swirling" from the top of her
head. Jackie showed me her book showing what I would need. I had Diane
sit down in "my" chair. I went around and gathered what I needed, and
then Jackie showed me how to mix the colors. We were going to use three
formulations, a lightener, a medium overall color and a multi-dimensional
darker perimeter color.
The Lightener used two scoops Colorgraphics Powder, two scoops of
Promoter 22 and one scoop Grape Pigment. The Medium Overall Color used 1
oz. Color Sync 6G, 1 oz. Color Sync 6N and 2 oz. of Activator. The Multi-
Dimensional, Darker Perimeter Color used one oz. Color Sync 5N and one
oz. of Color Sync Activator.
While Diane wanted more dramatic highlights than mine, she wanted it a
little softer than what the picture showed. Jackie said that to soften
this effect, would require me to weave subsections of hair, like Sarah
had shown me how to do, instead of slicing and to leave out a section
between each foil.
Jackie had me comb Diane's hair into a natural fall. She showed me areas
in her crown with strong growth patterns which she had me, clip out of
the way. She had me section and clip five triangles of hair, extending
from the crown down to just above the ear. She said that it is very
important to place the triangles away from any strong whirls.
Jackie then had me subdivide each triangle with three back-to-back slices
explaining that the slices should pivot, so the foils radiate from a
central point. Instead of lightening each slice, she had me weave out a
section of the slice, lay it on a foil, brush the lightener on the weave
and close the foil. I repeated the process for the two remaining slices
and the four remaining triangles. After I completed the foil placements,
Jackie had me brush on the medium overall color to the hair between
foils. I then applied the darker perimeter color to the remaining hair. I
set the timer for 20 minutes.
This was much more technical than I thought it was going to be. I thanked
Jackie for helping. She said it was no problem that I did a very good
job. She said that I had it under control now and she was going to leave.
I thanked her again as she left.
Before I knew it, the timer went off. Diane went back over to the sink.
She lay back and I rinsed the hair outside of the foils, so the lightened
hair would not pick up any of excess darker color. I then removed all of
the foils, shampooed and conditioned her hair. I blotted her hair, to
remove the excess water, and lead her back to "my" chair. I asked her if
she wanted me to set her hair or just blow dry and style it. She asked me
to set her hair to give her some large bouncy curls. I went to the back
and came out with the red 1 ?" magnetic rollers. I did the standard brick
pattern and was finished in half an hour. I place a hair net over Diane's
head and put her under one of the dryers. While she was drying, I touched
up my hair with a curling iron.
Before long, she was dry and she went back to "my" chair. I removed the
rollers and just broke up her curls with my fingers. I turned her around
so she could see herself in the mirror. She love the way her hair turned
out. A couple of spritzs with hairspray and she was finished. I gave her
a bottle of
Biolage's Color Care Shampoo and their Earth Tones Gold Conditioner.
Before we returned to Diane's house, she wanted to show off her hair. We
stopped at Janet's, Sandy's, Laura's and Cindy's homes, they all loved
her hgair. Janet said that she thought I had great talent for doing hair.
I told her that I was seriously thinking of going to cosmetology school
after I graduate.
By the time we made all of the rounds, it was time to go home for dinner.
When we walked in, Don and Shelly were both surprised. Shelly looked at
Diane's hair and asked who did it and was pleasantly surprised when she
found out that I did her highlights. Don was a little miffed because
Diane had not said anything about coloring her hair. Shelly told him to
be nice, that Diane was old enough to make her own decisions how she
wanted to look. Don got that I do not understand women look on his face
and said he was sorry.
Shelly was just getting ready to start cooking and I asked if I could
help. She said "Thank you for the offer; you can set the table if you
would like." After we finished setting the table, we went to Diane's room
and she showed me some new clothes she had bought with her Christmas
money. She bought some darling tops, pants, skirts and a beautiful garnet
red, satin silk, and a Nicole Miller dress she was going to wear to her
Winter Formal. It had a sweetheart neckline, spaghetti straps and a
flowing hemline cut higher in the center with a small slit. I told her
that I loved her dress and she asked me if I would like to try it on
since we were both about the same size. I said I would love to. Diane
told me to undress while she got a strapless long line bra to wear under
it. For the first time in a long time, I was uncomfortable undressing in
front of someone. It had become second nature with Laurie and Jennifer
but with Diane, this was different. She told me to relax that it was not
a big deal for girls undress in front of each other. But, if I felt more
comfortable, I could go into her bathroom and change. I told her that I
was just self-conscious about my body.
"Look Suzie, I know that this is difficult for you. But, as I understand
it, part of your transition is to become comfortable with who you are
becoming. Part of that is to be comfortable being a girl among other
girls. You are more of a girl, regardless what your body looks like, than
some genetic girls I have met. I will not make any judgments about you I
just want to help. But, it is just a matter of what you feel comfortable
with now."
I just looked at Diane with tears in my eyes. She was totally accepting
me as a girl and that made me so happy I started to cry. She smiled, gave
me a hug and said, "Girl, you are going to be alright."
I took my top and pants off and I was standing there in just my bra and
panties. I took off my bra as she handed me the strapless long line bra,
which she hooked up for me. I put my pads in the bra's cups and I had a
figure again. She had me sit down and put on a pair of panty hose. She
unzipped the dress and had me step into it. I pulled it up, put my arms
through the straps and she zipped me up. The dress fit me as if it was
made for me. Diane thought it looked better on me, than it did on her, we
both laughed. She had me sit down and quickly put my hair into an updo.
She gave me a pair of red pumps with 3" heels to put on.
"Look at yourself in a mirror and tell me if you see anything other than
a beautiful, sexy teenage girl."
I looked at myself and had to admit that I looked good. She could not
wait to take me out to show her parents. They both thought I looked
fantastic. Shelly asked me if I was on hormones yet and I told her just
the LHRH agonist.
Shelly asked, "Do you have any idea yet when you will start estrogen?"
"I am hoping that Dr. Anderson will give me a release to start in
February or March."
"I have not had any experience working with transsexuals, but from what I
have read, I think the results you get will be fantastic."
"Thank you I really hope so."
"Would you mind if I consulted with Dr. Snow? I would love to get to know
more about this."
"Yes, sure you can talk with her. In fact, I have an appointment for my
next injection in two weeks and I will let her know it is all right for
you to ask her about me."
"Thank you, dinner is almost ready, so go and get changed."
Diane and I went back into her room and she helped me out of her dress
and bra. I hated taking the dress off and I told Diane I just might steal
it from her. She laughed and said I could borrow it sometime.
As we were eating, Don and Shelly told me of what we were going to do
this weekend in Pacific Grove. We were going to meet another family, Bob
and Elizabeth Jackson and their kids Steve and Kristen. The two families
had known each other for almost 20 years and were best friends. They
often vacationed together. Don, Bob and Steve were going to play golf at
the Spyglass Hill Golf Course. Shelly, Elizabeth, Diane, Kristen and I
were going shopping in Carmel. Diane and Steve were seniors and Kristen
was a junior like me. They all went to the same high school. After golf
and shopping, we were all getting together for dinner. Don asked me if I
had ever been to the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I said no but I have always
wanted to go. They had season passes so we decided to go to the aquarium
on Sunday before we came home.
After dinner, I offered to clean-up and said that Diane would be happy to
help me. Diane gave me a half-serious nasty look and said she would love
to help clean-up.
Shelly said, "Suzie you are a good influence on Diane, we will have to
have you over more often." We all laughed. Diane and I cleaned-up, then
went to her room and talked and listened to some CD's. Before we know it,
it was 11:00 and Shelly said we should be getting ready for bed. I said
good night, went into the other room and crashed.
Before I knew it, it was 5:30 and Diane was waking me up. I quickly
showered, put on a pair of jeans, a long sleeve top, brushed my hair and
did my make-up before 6:00. We were on the road by 6:10 and did not stop
until we reached Santa Nella where we stopped for breakfast at Denney's.
We arrived in Pacific Grove at 11:00. We unloaded the car and Don left to
pick-up Bob and Steve. The Jackson's had come there many times with Don
and Shelly, and fell in love with the area. They ended up buying a small
2nd home, 15 years ago, in Pacific Grove not far from Don and Shelly's
house. A short time later, Elizabeth and Kristen drove up. Diane
introduced us. Elizabeth was a striking brown-haired woman in her early
40's, a real estate agent and she knew Betty. Kristen was born two weeks
before me; she had her mom's features and had highlights put into her
hair. She was about the same size as Diane and me. We chatted for a
couple of minutes. They both had heard much about Suzie but, didn't know
about Robert, which was fine with me. They were glad, to finally meet me.
They loved what I had done to Diane's hair.
Finally, we left to go and get some lunch. We drove into Carmel and
miraculously found a parking spot right on Ocean Ave, which is not an
easy thing to do. We walked to the Plaza Cafe & Grill and went inside to
eat. The caf? was busy so we had to wait a few minutes for a table. We
sat down and started talking again. They asked me about my school, work
and my family. I found out that, the two families were very close and
that Diane, her sister Joni, Steve and Kristen were almost like brother
and sisters. In fact, even though Steve and Diane never really dated,
they were almost best friends. Steve was the brother she never had.
Before we knew it, our table was ready. During lunch, we chatted more. By
the time had finished, I felt I had made a new friend in Kristen and I
liked Elizabeth a lot too.
After lunch, we started hitting the shops. I was not really looking for
anything but, I did want to pick-up something for Mom, Betty, Laurie and
Jennifer. While shopping, I realized that while I had many pairs of nice
earrings, I did not have any fun funky ones. I asked Diane and Kristen to
help me look for some. We split off from Elizabeth and Shelly planning to
meet back at the car at 4:30. We went from store to store and I found
three pairs of cute earrings for me, tee shirts for Laurie and Jennifer
and earrings for Mom and Betty. Diane and Kristen both bought several
pairs of earrings. They say time goes fast when you are having fun and
before we knew it, it was time to go back to the car.
Elizabeth dropped us off at Shelly's house. We were all going to meet at
the Sardine Factory at 7:00 for dinner. Don arrived home at 5:30 and was
very happy. He had shot an 80, which was his course best. He said that
Steve had heard that Diane brought a girlfriend and was asking about me.
I suddenly turned about five shades of red. Don just laughed and said he
just told Steve that I seemed like a nice girl and that he would have to
make his own judgments at dinner tonight.
Had I known we were going to a fancy restaurant for dinner, I would have
brought some nice clothes with me. Diane came to the rescue. She had some
clothes she left there and we went through her closet. We settled on a
black a-line skirt that hit just above the knee, a pale pink, long
sleeved, ribbed crewneck, cashmere sweater and matching low heels. I
needed black hose to go with the outfit, so Diane and I took a quick trip
to the store. When we got home, we took turns showering. Of course, it
took Diane and me longer to get ready.
After I finished getting dressed, I stood looking into the mirror. The
sweater and skirt hugged my body and looked as if it custom tailored for
me. Diane remarked that it looked better on me than on her and gave me a
locket and matching earrings to wear. She said that she loved to wear
with that sweater. It seemed like we were getting very dressed up just
for a dinner. I asked Diane about it and she said, "You want to look nice
to meet Steve don't you?" Here she was trying to play matchmaker again. I
told her that while I appreciate her wanting to set me up, I was not
ready to start dating guys yet. She just smiled at me and said, "Well see
what happens."
Diane proceeded to tell me all about Steve. They had known each other all
of their lives and he was her best guy friend. They tried dating once,
but it did not work out but they stayed close friends. Steven was shy and
never really had a girlfriend before. She thought that we just might hit
it off. I had to remind her that I was not like the other girls and she
just shirked it off saying that things will work out for me.
When we went out to the living room Don and Shelly were waiting for us. I
immediately noticed that we were a little overdressed, compared to Don
and Shelly. They were dressed causal. I gave Diane a nasty look and she
just smiled. We got in their car and drove to the Sardine Factory. The
Jackson's arrived at the same time as we did. Diane introduced me to Bob
and Steve. Steve was about 5'10" and 150 lbs with dirty blond hair and
piercing blue eyes, he was so cute. He looked at me and you could see
that he was shy. He wanted to say something but kept quiet. When we went
into the restaurant, Diane made sure that Steve and I sat next to each
other. During dinner, I found out more about Steve from Diane than from
him. He was very nervous and did not speak very much, I caught him
looking at me several time and then quickly look away.
After dinner, we decided to all come over to Don and Shelly's house to
talk, play cards or a game. The adults played bridge and we kids played
Monopoly. We played for a couple of hours, talking and laughing. Toward
the end, Steve was loosening up and we actually had a nice conversation.
By the end of the evening, we had become friends.
Around 11:00, the Jackson's went home. Diane and I went to her room and
she could not wait to see what I thought of Steven. I told her that I
thought he was nice and cute but I was not ready to start dating yet. She
offered to help me anyway, she could.
The next morning we got up, packed our things and went to Denny's for
breakfast. Don and Shelly again offered their support for my transition.
I thanked them and said that it meant a lot, to me, to have them accepted
me enough as a girl that they allowed Diane to ask me to come along this
weekend. I spent a few minutes asking Shelly what she thought of the
different hormones that were available. She said she just had some basic
knowledge of how they worked on transsexuals. She said that she would
research it more and let me know. Don said that if I needed help in
legally changing my name and/or gender he would help.
We got at the Monterey Bay Aquarium just as it opened. This was the first
time I had been there. It is an amazing place. It took us over 4 hours to
go through it. The highlight, for me, seeing the divers hand feed the sea
otters.
However, all good things have to end and after a quick bite of lunch, it
was time to go home. On the way home, we chatted some more until both
Diane and I fell asleep. I woke up and stared out the window thinking
about the last two weeks. This has been the most rewarding time for me,
since I started all of this. Everyone has completely accepted me, I have
made new friends as Suzie and Jackie has let me do more than I really
should be able to do at the salon. That September day, Mom caught me,
seemed like it was ages ago. During this whole time, I did not think of
Robert for more than a few minutes. I started getting sad to think I
would have to go back being him tomorrow. Life was not fair; I hated
Robert, even though I knew that he was very much a part of who I was.
Being Suzie was so natural for me, that I knew it would be hard to try to
be Robert again. Even for just a few hours at school.
As we got home, Mom and Betty just drove up. I introduced Betty to Don
and Shelly. I said goodbye to Diane and thanked Don and Shelly for
letting me come. They told Mom that if there was anything that they could
do to help me to please feel free to call. Mom said thanks and she would
call.
As we walked to the house, Mom commented on my new highlights and thought
they looked fantastic. However, she was worried that I might be going to
fast. I told her that I was to the point I did not care what anyone else
thought. She just smiled and said, "Just remember that I love you and
support you. But, I don't want you to cause anymore trouble than is
necessary." I hugged her and said, "Thanks Mom I love you too."
We went into the house, and Jennifer and Laurie were there. They asked
how everything went. I told them about shopping in Carmel, meeting the
Jackson's and going to the Aquarium. I asked them about what they did in
San Diego after I left. I told them that I was feeling very torn. I had
had an incredible week but missed spending time with them. Mom reassured
me that there would be many more opportunities in the future.
Jennifer and Betty were going to start living with us today. They were
planning to take the next month to consolidate what we all had. We
decided to take the best from both households. What we did not use, we
would sell, store or give to away to Goodwill. I said, I would help in
anyway, I could. Betty would sell her house, then this summer after
school is out Mom would sell ours and we would combine our resources and
buy another, nicer, home. In the mean time, we would start discussing
where we would want to live.
Jennifer, Laurie and I went to Laurie's bedroom and started to talk about
our week and weekend. First, they had to comment on my new highlights and
Jennifer wanted me to do hers too. I told her I would.
It turns out that they spent much of their time down at the beach, but
also went to Sea World and Tijuana. I told them about my week at work.
How I gained two new clients and my weekend in the Monterey area. We
talked until almost 10:00 when it was time to get ready for bed. For the
time being, Jennifer and I were going to share Laurie's room and she
would take mine. Then we would move our clothes and then permanently make
the change.
I woke up the next morning very depressed. The thought of having to
become Robert was really brining me down. Getting ready, I could not help
myself and I put on just a little subtle eyeliner, clear nail polish, and
small hoops in my ear lobes and pulled my hair back into a high ponytail.
I put on my panties, an AAA cup bra, a camisole, a pair of Suzie's jeans
and a sweater. Jennifer was going to take me to school so I just called
out "Goodbye," to Mom and Betty as I was going out of the house. When
Jennifer saw me, she gave me a "you are going to cause trouble look on
her face" look. On the way to school, she said that she thought I looked
fantastic but that I was going to cause a stir.
When we got to school, I got the usual looks and snide comments about
being a pretty, little sissy boy. Every one of my teachers in my first
three classes had me stay after class and asked me what was going on. I
told them all the same thing that I was seeing Dr. Anderson and starting
to transition to becoming a girl. They were stunned but wished me good
luck.
On the way to class, I had to use the bathroom. Without even thinking, I
went into the girl's bathroom and immediately to a stall. The bathroom
was empty, but soon I heard some girls come in. I thought it would be
best to try to wait them out. Nevertheless, it started getting late for
my next period and they were not leaving. I thought I would try to sneak
out without drawing too much attention to myself. I pulled off the band,
holding my ponytail back, and let my hair fall around my face and
shoulders. I left the stall and quickly headed for the door without
looking back. One of the girls called out, "Hey, aren't you going to wash
your hands?" I instinctively turned around and they saw my face.
"Oh look it is that pretty little sissy Robert or should I say Roberta.
What are you doing in the girl's bathroom you pervert?"
I looked around and there was Maggie Wilson and three of the "mean" girls
in there together. I knew this was going to be trouble for me. I just
looked at them and said I was sorry that it was just a mistake.
"I don't thick it was a mistake I think you wanted to take a peak at us,
you pervert."
I started to get worried. These girls were always in trouble or causing
it. They continued, "Oh she is to pretty to be a boy. Look she has
highlighted her hair and is even wearing eyeliner. I'll be she is even
wearing panties, grab her!"
They grabbed my arms, pushed me up against the bathroom wall, pulled up
my sweater and saw the camisole and bra.
"I knew it go and get Mrs. Preston (the principal). In the mean time,
since she wants to look like a girl I think we should help her," said
Maggie, as their leader.
"Please just let me go I don't want any trouble."
"Too late freak," as Maggie grabbed my chin with one hand and proceeded
to put lipstick on with the other, "if you squirm, then you will get this
all over your face and not just your lips." What could I do I just stood
there while she put the lipstick on. Maggie then pulled out her eye
shadow and eyebrow pencil. Just as she was finished, I heard the door
open. They immediately released me and acted nonchalant.
Mrs. Preston walked in and demanded, "What is going on here? Robert is
that you?"
"Yes Mrs. Preston", was all I could think of saying.
"We came in here and found ?her' standing there putting on ?her' makeup,"
Mandy lied. The other girls backed her up. Mrs. Preston told me to go to
her office and wait for her there. As I was leaving, I could hear her
telling the girls, something about not believing them and that she would
find out what happened.
Here I was walking to the principal's office, with my hair down and
wearing makeup. I noticed that most of the kids, going to class, did not
pay any attention to me. I could tell that for the brief moment we passed
they did not recognize me and thought I was just another girl walking to
class. I did run into Stephani. At first, she did not notice me either.
As we got closer, I made the mistake of saying, "Hi!" She stopped with a
do I know you look on her face. Then her eyes got big,
"Robert...err...Suzie? Oh my God what are you doing?"
"Hi, Steph, I had to go to the bathroom real bad and without thinking, I
automatically went into the girl's bathroom. No one was in there and I
just went to a stall. About the time, I realized my mistake, Maggie
Wilson and her friends came in. I tried to wait them out but it was
getting late and they were not in any hurry to leave. I let down my hair
to hide my face and tried to sneak out but they caught me. They started
harassing me and said as long as I was going to try to look like a girl;
I might as well have some makeup on. Two of the girls pinned me against
the wall, one went to get Mrs. Preston and Maggie proceeded to put
lipstick and eye shadow on me. Mrs. Preston told me to go to her office
and wait for her."
"Wow, I must say that you do look good. They were probably jealous."
We both laughed. We quickly caught up on our Christmas breaks but had to
say goodbye as she had to get to class and I had to get to Mrs. Preston's
office. I did notice one guy check me out, until he realized who I was
and I immediately saw daggers come out of his eyes.
When I got to the principal's office, Mrs. Preston had not arrived yet.
Mrs. Bergeron, the receptionist was on the phone and I tell she was
talking to Mom and telling her that Mrs. Preston wanted her to come and
pick me up. She hung up the phone and told me to have a seat while I
waited. While I was waiting, several kids came and went to and from the
office. Most ignored me, but a few did recognize me and I could hear and
see them snicker. I could only imagine what was going through their
minds.
The longer I sat there the madder I started to get. After all, I was not
the one who had done anything. Sure, I made a mistake, but Maggie and her
friends assaulted me and put the make up on me, well everything but the
eyeliner. As I was sitting there, Mrs. Bergeron came over and offered me
a wipe to remove my makeup. As I took the wipe, I started thinking, which
sometimes causes me trouble. Why should I take off the makeup? Even
though they were trying to embarrass me, lipstick and eye shadow actually
looked well on me. I handed her the wipe back and said no thanks I wanted
to leave on the makeup. She gave me a strange look and went back to her
desk. Soon, Mrs. Preston came in and took me into her office.
"Ok Robert, tell me what happened? Those girls told me one story now I
want to hear your side of it."
I told her about how and why I mistakenly went into the girl's bathroom.
I told her all about Suzie, my life, my job and my family. How I had
spent the last three weeks as Suzie fulltime.
"I am not sure what to do with you. I asked Mrs. Bergeron to call you mom
and ask her to come down so we can talk about this. I sympathize with the
fact that you seem to want to become a girl. But, we can't have you
causing this kind of disturbance. Regardless how you feel and make
yourself look, we can not have you using the girl's bathroom."
"But, Mrs. Preston, it was an accident."
"I realize that, but we have to figure out how to handle this."
We talked for another fifteen minutes, or so, before Mom showed up. Mrs.
Preston told her what had happened. Mom said she was not that surprised
because she has pretty much stopped thinking of me as anyone other than
Suzie. I started to cry and said thanks Mom. We talked for almost an hour
and came to the agreement that, while at school, I would dress and act in
a way that would not cause a problem. I told her that I was not
comfortable using the boy's bathroom. She suggested that if I had to use
the restroom that I could come and use the one in the teacher's lounge
and I would have it to myself.
The conversation came around to my and Suzie's future. We told Mrs.
Preston that, if all went well, this spring I would be starting on
hormones and start living fulltime as soon as school was out. She asked
about school next year and we told her that we were going to move so I
can start in a new school as Suzie.
By the time we finished talking there was only half an hour left before I
got out of school, so Mrs. Preston told me to go home. She and Mom both
laughed when I said I really should go to class. Mrs. Preston told me to
go home and tomorrow to come looking a little more like Robert and less
like Suzie.
As Mom and I were walking out to the car, she just had to say, "I told
you something like this might happen and that you have to be careful."
"Yes Mom. I know. I will try and be more careful in the future."
"I know it is hard for you honey. We have an hour and a half before your
appointment with Dr. Anderson. What should we do?"
"Mom, do you think we might have time to go to the DMV so I can get my
license?"
"We can stop and see how much of a wait there will be." When we got to
her car, she handed me some wipes, "But first you need to take off that
makeup."
"Yes Mom," as I took the wipes, using the mirror on the visor, I removed
all of my makeup. She then gave me the car keys and told me to drive.
When we got to the DMV, we found that there was a fifteen-minute wait and
the test would take about half an hour. I signed up and we waited for
them to call my name. The DMV examiner was a woman in her early forties
and had to check and recheck my paper work. She could not believe that I
was a boy. I think I got her mad when I offered to prove it to her.
Anyway, I had no problem passing and I finally had my driver's license,
even though it was in Robert's name.
On the way to Dr. Anderson's, I changed my clothes. I got into the back
seat, took my jersey, AAA cup bra and camisole off. I put on one of my
demi cut B cup bar and inserts and a long sleeve print blouse. I was
already wearing a pair of Suzie's jeans so I just removed my running
shoes and socks; put on a pair of knee high nylons and a pair of pumps
with 2" heels. Mom stopped long enough for me to apply my make-up. I let
my hair down again, ran a brush through it and I was Suzie again.
While I was getting dressed, Mom asked me how much money I have saved. I
told her that I had managed to save almost $1,000 already. Mom was
impressed. She said, "As soon as we finished moving Betty and Jennifer
in, we will go and look for a car for you. Remember though, that you will
have to pay for your insurance and gas." I told her that I knew and
"Thank you, I love you very much."
By the time we arrived at Dr. Anderson's office, I was back to my happy,
optimistic and self-confident self. We had to wait a couple of minutes
for Dr. Anderson to finish with her previous patient. Diane loved my hair
and was impressed with my progress. She told me that her brother/sister,
who lives in the Portland, Oregon area, had her surgery scheduled for
June. I told Diane that I was happy for her sister and I was a little bit
jealous.
Dr. Anderson opened the door and called me into her office. I thought
this was a little strange because I had not seen anyone leave. As I
walked in, there was a woman, in her mid twenties sitting there.
"Suzie, this is Maria Fuentes, please site down. I asked Maria to stay
because, like you, she also transitioned early in her life. She came to
me when she was 17 and I worked with her pretty much as I have been
working with you now. At first she too, thought I was going too
slow....Maria please finish the story."
"Hi Suzie, it is nice to meet you. Like most of us, I guess, I knew from
an early age that I needed to become a girl. I was the youngest of three
boys. My brothers were 10 and 12 years older than I was. They always
kidded me about being an oops baby. Later on Mom confessed that she let
herself get pregnant again hoping to have a girl. She was disappointed
when I was born a boy. When I was very young and Dad and my brothers were
not around, she would dress me as her little daughter. I had long curly
hair until I started school. Dad insisted that I get a regular boys
haircut. Mom told me that she and Dad almost got a divorce over me and my
hair. Mom said that I cried the whole time I was getting my haircut. Our
dress-up times also ended. I remember missing wearing dresses and having
Mom fuss over my hair.
As I grew older, the desires did not diminish. When I was eleven or
twelve, I found that my desire to dress and act as a girl became strong.
I started to grow my hair longer and when my Mom and Dad were gone, I
would try on my Mom's clothes, make-up and style my hair as good as I
could.
When I was 15, my brothers had both moved out of the house, it was just
Mom, Dad and me. Mom and Dad had gone out for the evening, and this gave
me a chance to become Maria again, at least for a little while. By now,
my hair was between 5" and 6" long. I undressed and put on one of my
mom's bras, stuffed with her panties, and a pair of her panties. I put on
one of her tricot robes and started curling my hair with her curling
iron. When I finished I started applying her make-up. That is when I
heard, ?What the hell are you doing? Elizabeth, come here.' It was my
Dad. They got their dates mixed up and the play; they were going to, was
the following week. Mom came into the bathroom and tried to have a
shocked look on her face, but somehow I did not think she was that
shocked.
To make a long story short, we talked about me, Dad blamed Mom because of
the way she treated me when I was younger and that no son of his was
going to become a sissy boy (too late Dad). He ignored the problem
thinking it would go away. Mom was more sympathetic but tended to go
along with Dad. I took me over 2 years to convince them that this was not
going away and they took me to a psychologist who referred me to Dr.
Anderson.
I thought finally I could start hormones and start living as a girl,
wrong. I had to meet with her for almost 6 months before she would even
consider letting me have hormones. I hated her and felt very frustrated
for going so slow. I wanted to start living as Maria right away. Finally,
she did approve me to start hormones a few months before I turned 18. Dad
and Mom finally came to accept me as their new daughter. Mom was actually
quite happy about it. The day I turned 18 I started living as Maria and
have not had any regrets."
"Wow" I said, "Do you have any regrets now?"
"Not at all, in fact I am just glad that Dr. Anderson made me wait.
Thinking back, I now realize that by waiting I was to better able to
understand what I was going to be going through. Trust her, when she says
?Go for it', you will be ready."
We talked for about 15 minutes and she gave me her phone number and said
that if I ever needed someone to talk with, give her a call. We hugged
and I thanked her. Dr. Anderson said that she found that those going
through transition, found it helpful able to talk with someone who has
already gone through what I was going to go through. Maria got up to
leave and I said I would call her.
I gave Dr. Anderson my diary and she spent a few minutes looking at it.
We then, spent the next half an hour talking about what had happened the
last month. She said that she was very happy with my progress and was not
concerned what happened at school today. In fact, she would have been
more surprised if I had not tried to push the envelope, so to speak.
"Suzie, I am very pleased at your progress. You are not the same person
who came in here four months ago. You are more, female in your actions
and thinking then many genetic girls your age. It took Maria almost 9
months to be at the point you are now. I had her start hormones because
she was almost 18. If she had been your age, I would have held off a
little longer. In your case, I am going to recommend something that I
rarely do. That is, starting you earlier than we had originally planned
on doing. Give it another month. During that time, I want you to do some
serious thinking about where you want to go and what you want in life. In
the mean time, I will contact Dr. Snow and have her set you an
appointment for one month from today to start your hormones. She will
probably want another blood test, so have her do that the next time you
go into see her. How does that sound?"
I was almost speechless and tears of happiness started rolling down my
cheeks.
"Oh, Dr. Anderson, I have wanted to hear that ever since I started seeing
you. I just wish I could start today."
"Patience you dear, at least you can see the light at the end of the
tunnel now. When we meet next month, we will discuss all of your options.
We will start setting your path to be able to become Suzie fulltime."
We talked for a few more minutes then she asked Mom to come in. Dr.
Anderson told Mom what we had discussed and what the timetable would be
for me. The whole time I could not stop crying because I was so happy.
All of a sudden, it seemed like my life had meaning. Before we left, Dr.
Anderson cautioned me that as far as school goes, not to push the
envelope too much. There is a very real risk that I someone might assault
again, maybe even physically hurt this time. She said some girls
transition at their school others change schools for a "fresh" start.
Whichever path I decided to do, it would have to be my choice. I told her
that I was thinking of changing schools, but had not really decided yet
what I was going to do.
We thanked Dr. Anderson and went home. Betty, Laurie and Jennifer were
all there and I could not wait to tell them my news. They were all happy
for me and we decided to go out to eat to celebrate. After dinner, I had
to call Diane, Stephani and Janet and tell them of my good news. They
were all happy for me and Steph said it was about time I got some girl
juice flowing through my body.
Tuesday at school was as I thought it would be. It seemed like everyone
had heard about what happened. I could hear kids whispering things like,
"Did you hear what happened to him? I always thought he was somewhat
strange. What an f_ _king faggot. I always thought he acted like a girl,"
and many other comments. I had lunch with Stephani, Amber and Connie.
They told me, "Just ignore everyone." That I had to do what was right for
me. We talked through lunch and they wanted to get together Friday night
and go out. I said thanks, but for the next couple of weeks I was going
to be busy helping Jennifer and Betty move.
After school, I went directly to work. Mom let me drive her car so for
the first time so I did not have to depend on someone to give me a ride.
When I got to work, Jackie asked me to come to the back room and showed
me the work cart the Erica left behind. It contained her hair rollers,
perm rods, scissors color brushes and everything else she used while
working there. Jackie said Erica came in this morning to show everyone
her new baby. She said she was not coming back. In fact, she was not
going to continue hairstyling. She asked Jackie to see if someone wanted
to buy her stuff and wanted to know if I was interested. I said I was,
but was not sure I could afford to. I told her that Mom was going to buy
me a car and I had to pay for the insurance. She told me to call Erica
and see what we could work out.
I called Erica and we chatted for a few minutes came up with a price of
$100 for everything and I could pay her as I got the money. I thanked her
and said that I would love to see her baby sometime and if she ever
needed a babysitter to give me a call. She said thanks.
As I walked back into the main salon area, I saw Marie Getty was waiting
for me. She said she knew she was early, but hope
