Lance Palladon was a sincere, but dreamy young man who worried greatly
about where the world was, where the world was going, even at times
loosing sleep over injustices in the past he could do nothing about.
Then one day a man showed up at his door, the man's name was Gordon
Rippley Archer and he was the founder and leader of something called the
Cronos' Repair Agency Salvaging History or C.R.A.S.H.
Simply put C.R.A.S.H. was a group that had found a way to send people on
one way trips into the past, having made that discovery Gordon Archer
decided that the best use for it was to do what could be done to change
the bad things that had happened in the past and making, at least in an
alternate world a new better today.
Archer knew a lot about Lance due to the many secret profiles they
compiled of people to look for candidates to join their C.R.A.S.H.
program, Lance it seemed was just the kind of person they were looking
for.
Lance was impressed with the tour he was given of the C.R.A.S.H.
headquarters. though as an 18 year old art student none of the
technological wizardry made a bit of sense to him.
An orphan who had been raised in foster care from the age of 7 Lance was
ready for a chance to change the world, he was ready for an adventure.
However there was a catch.
They couldn't send him physically into the past, only his mind, once the
C.R.A.S.H. Helmet was put on his heard and activated his mind would shoot
into the past and find another body to house it, while the mind in that
body would shoot forward to rest in his.
While the artificial intelligence that ran the transfer couldn't say in
who's body he would end up, they were at least able to effect a bit of an
aim.
They did know that the person who would be picked, would be around the age
of the person coming in, give or take around 4 years, and they would be
someone who wanted badly to escape from their life.
To prevent this person from always being either a prisoner, or or a
terminally ill person. the body picked would be at least as health as the
travelers original body, and be enough of a mental match so that if the
person from the present was not criminally inclined, nether would the
target in the past.
Other factors, such as the sex, race, social class or nationality of the
target would remain an unknown until arrival.
However on the plus side, it was thought that the sub mind of the body in
the past would supple enough basic imprinted information to the new mind
so that they would have access to enough to know who they and the people
around them were, as well as even being able to speak the language of the
new body if it was different.
Acting like that person however would be up to the talents of the person
from what was the future to that body.
"So be it!" said the artistic, altruistic, rootless young man. "Let's get
started."
The first step was three months of training in and study of the history of
the time Lance would soon be living in and things that he could do with
his fore-knowledge of the events that would otherwise happen without his
taking a part.
While they couldn't pin point the place or date where or when he would
arrive, they could aim for it to happen within a 220 square mile area of
their choosing, and a date anywhere from from 23 to 36 years before the
date of their birth of the traveler, the machine could have been set for
dates closer to the leave time, but Gordon wanted to take no chances at an
even even weirder version of the McFly scenario taking place and having
one of his Time Crashers end up in their own mother or father!
At last the date of departure arrived and the C.R.A.S.H. Helmet was placed
on Lance's head, there was nothing, then a dazzling flash of light and
Lance found himself no longer setting but standing and looking down a
woman's cleavage, cleavage that from the point of view he had let Lance
know that the cleavage belonged to him.
Startled from his contemplation of this revelation by applause Lance
looked up to see dozens of well dressed people standing in front of him,
whatever was going on, it seemed to be a party of some kind, and he, or
rather she, was a the guest of honor. Hoping the basic "hard wired" memory
of the body would kick in soon Lance thought it best to try and play
along.
Smiling and waving at the crowd Lance started on his journey into the
past, three steps forward and Lance, unprepared,for walking in the three
inch heels she was in, fell flat on her face and into the April 21st, 1953
coming out party of 16 year old debutante Millicent Van Coats, of the
shipping and textile Van Coats of Winebridge, Connecticut.
The poor orphan boy who had never lived in the same place for more than a
half dozen years in a row, would now be playing the part of a poor little
rich (very rich) girl. "and I thought the part where I try to change the
past would be the hard part," thought Lance as several people rushed
forward to help the young lady back on her feet.
As the years passed Lance did what she could to push C.R.A.S.H.'s plans
forward and help the world edge toward a better place, but damn that money
was districting!
Lance, as he changed from daddies little princess, to rich high society
lady, hoped that at least what she was doing, which turned out not to be
as auspicious as he, Rip Archer, or the rest of C.R.A.S.H. had hoped for,
would at least have some sort of "butterfly effect."
Lance did at least introduce tight black pants for women in the late 50's,
which might not have happened otherwise.
Meanwhile in the now, in Lance's body, Millicent was just glad to no
longer have her life ploted out for her as it had been, and was looking
forward to her time as a Washington DC page.
