DVD Night, or My Second Public Outing
This is an autobiographical work of non-fiction. Everything described
here, in all detail, is true, as it was in my first accounting "Buying
Water as a Girl." I hope you enjoy, even though it's far more
pedestrian that the adventures many of you had. It may interest only
me. But my hands still shook from the adrenaline when back in the car.

Didn't Blockbuster used to be open to midnight at all locations? Didn't
it? Now they close at 9, 10, whenever, seems like. But I get ahead of
myself.
I'd been planning this for a week or so, my second outing en femme. I'd
gone out once before, taken a few evening walks, and hit an ATM or
three. That has always been a thrill, and never any negative reactions,
but I was aiming for something more personal and risky. I had the week
off, so going to a Blockbuster on a Wednesday night granted me a modicum
of privacy. If I could find one open.
I had driven about 45 minutes from home, just so nobody could end up
recognizing me. That's the smart part of the idea. The dumb part is
realizing too late that I had no idea where anything was. For some
reason, I'd decided (which is to say fixated on) buying a DVD from a
Blockbuster, so I passed by McDonald's and other open establishments
that offered enough potential humiliation to complete my self-appointed
mission. Frankly, after an hour of searching, my nerves had given way
to a loud and unladylike questioning of Blockbuster's policies.
As before, those nerves were rooted in the fact that I am in no way
'passable'. I'm a big guy with a bad wig. And to be honest, I hadn't
invested in being passable the way one must, with shaving or dyeing body
hair, toning, etc. A sudden shift to a feminine appearance could raise
eyebrows amongst those who must be kept in the dark, shall we say.
The other reason is that my 'femme persona' was a little younger than
me. Okay, a lot younger. "Ashlee" is a young teenager, 14ish - flirty,
silly, gossipy. A boy-crazy cheerleader if you will. But probably not
a hefty guy with a goatee. People might believe that I could run a
marathon, but a girl? A teenage girl? Nuthin doing.
But hey I am what I am (and at least being as big as I am means that
people think twice before questioning that). And I went all out,
wearing only "appropriate" gear ? every stitch of thread dictated by
teen fashions. I like to detail my outfits, so if you worry your eyes
will glaze, skip down to the asterisks.
I had on a pink thong that said 'BRAT' on the front in yellow capital
letters, and a yellow elastic. An apt description. Up top I sported a
pink bra that cut into my left side more than I'd like. Pretty feminine
for my tastes, as I've never gone out for the dripping lace and bows.
That's not Ashlee's style.
Down below I had a camouflage-patterned skort. A skort is a skirt with
well shorts underneath. To outward appearances I was wearing a rather
short pleated skirt with useless pockets, but I was insured against the
odd gust of wind. Through the belt loops I'd tied a pink sequined sash
and knotted in front. Rather eye catching. The skirt/skort of course
was fashionably brief, so I could not hike it cover up my midriff. I
was also wearing some pink flip-flops that made the satisfying sound as
I moved.
Up top, the big decision always came down to what message I wanted to
send. I love girlie tee shirts and had struggled on what to choose. I
almost went with my "dance like a girl" tank top, but instead went with
a pale pink shirt with a darker pink ring on the collar and cuffs. On
the chest was the "My Little Pony" logo, complete with rainbow and two
frolicking ponies. Around that I'd half zipped a tight white zip-front
hoodie. The hems of the shirt and sweatshirt ended well above my waist,
so I had some exposed midriff there. On the chest of the hoodie was a
foil rainbow -- again, eye-catching and framing the My Little Pony
stuff. I left it half zipped up showing the ponies in their silly
girlish glory, and causing my chest to look, well, significant.
I sported my usual my overloaded charm bracelet, from which
dangled opinions like 'dorks love me' and 'I live 2 cheer'. The bracelet
makes a satisfying racket every time I move my hand, and offsets the
pink wristband on my other wrist. And around my neck was a rhinestone
heart, and lower down a sparkling "A". Finally, I had a pink scarf tied
around my head do-rag style, covered by a sideways pink trucker Dickies
baseball cap. Hopefully a good combination of girlie gangsta and sweet
innocence. Or whatever.

As always, I had with me my denim Tinkerbelle purse, which held my
lipgloss, bubble gum, and keys, as well as my pink furry "princess"
wallet where my money could be found. It was a small strap and perforce
must be carried by hand, which is humiliating in itself. I took off my
glasses, leaving me more helpless and dependent on others (I can see
well, but not "legally allowed to drive without them" well), put the
keys in the purse, and headed out for the store.
So there was one guy in the store, mid-20s. He was walking away from me
and said "Can I help you?" in my general direction ? classic customer
service. So I figure, just wait till he turns around, he's in for a
surprise.
"Could you tell me where I could find a Barbie video to buy?" My helper
-- who in the end seemed like a pretty good guy -- turns around, and...
..nothing. If I were in a store, and someone like that came in, I'd at
least have my mouth open for a coupla seconds. Or laughed a little. Or
pointed out "hey those are some weird clothes you're sporting there..."
in a helpful tone voice. So no in addition to worrying about being
dressed like I was, I had to worry about this guy's vision. Or sanity.
So with that out of the way as a potential problem, we went hunting for
a DVD that met my description.
Right past the DVDs for sale. To the DVDs for rent. So I repeated my
explanation. And lo and behold, we went to the DVDs for sale. The only
choice was a Barbie Pegasus (and I was hoping for the Barbie Diaries!
Dang!) which I grabbed, and followed to the front desk.
No I didn't have an account, no I don't want to give my e-mail. And
then, this gentleman started asking questions.
Of course, I had the story that my younger sis has a Peyton Manning fan,
and we had a bet, and I thought at worst I'd have to wear a Colts
jersey. The ice broken, he felt free to opine "My Little Pony...nice!"
and he liked the hat, too. He asked if I had to go drinking afterward,
and took a nice second look at my, well look ( I don't think he was into
me, just curious). Change in hand, and in my purse, I thanked him and
swished out.
I crossed the parking lot to my car, reached into my purse for the keys,
and found nothing. Lip gloss, check, bubblegum, check, glitter eye
pencil, check, wallet -- check. No keys. So now I'm starting to panic,
because it's cold, drizzly, and a couple guys on the other side of the
parking lot have noticed.
I peered into the window, didn't see them there. Started stacking the
contents on the purse on my roof, and...and...they were in the other
compartment! Silly me! I grabbed everything back, and dived into the
car.
And trembled. It's always a rush, and it's a clean, happy rush. And
I'm two for two for positive experiences, which is a good sign, I hope.
So what's next? A pharmacy? Even a bar? It seems that the ante is
upped little by little. And I do find myself wondering about the scene
in Providence or Boston...
Postscript: Afraid there's nothing more dramatic there (though it seemed
dramatic to me!). Since I'm on my own, it takes a long psyche-up
stretch to get the guts to do this, though this time was easier than
last. A gg or t* partner in crime could probably get more out of me
seeing that I am generally a submissive, but that's not where my life
is.
