I just stood there with my mouth open, not knowing what to say. Jackie
stood there for a few seconds with that smile on her face and simply
said, "Well?"
"Let's sit down and I'll explain." I decided to just tell Jackie the
truth. I waited for Jackie to move to the living room, but she stood
there and said, "Ladies first." I gave her a look and walked into the
living room and we both sat on the couch. "I guess I should just come
out and say it. I'm just like you Jackie, only the other way around. I
wish I were a girl."
"This isn't funny, Mel," Jackie said. "I'm serious about myself.
You've just tried on a dress once and now you want to be a woman?"
"This isn't the first time for me, Jackie. I've been wearing Maria's
stuff for a while now, but that isn't even the first time. I was around
7 when I first had thoughts about it. I always had a curiosity about
girls since I could imagine. In my old neighborhood, my best friend was
a girl named Susan. We always played together and one day we were at
her house and she asked me if I wanted to play house. We had done this
a lot and it was always the same, I was the husband and she was the
wife. This time was different. Susan led me to her room and said let's
make it different. I asked how and she said she wanted to be the
husband and that I will be the wife. I didn't even put up any kind of
argument.
"Susan had a pink and white sleeveless dress on her bed with white Mary
Jane shoes with it. She told me to put it on and then hand her my
clothes to her when I was done. Susan left the room and I did as she
asked. After she came back in with my clothes on (a pair of jeans and a
t-shirt and my sneakers), Susan led me into her mom's room and put
lipstick and blush on me. We then went over to the mirror and I got the
thrill of my life to that point. I liked the way I looked. Anyway, we
were playing house when all of a sudden Susan's door opened and her mom
walked in. She just laughed and went to her room and came back with a
camera. She told us to stand side by side and took a couple of pictures
of us. She then said that my mom wanted me to come home and then
proceeded to clean the makeup off of my face and got me dressed back
into my clothes. I was disappointed to dress like myself again. I was
having fun was what I could remember.
"The thoughts just escalated from there. Every time I was alone and I
knew I wouldn't get caught, I would go try on some of mom's clothes. I
liked the way I felt in them, Jackie. I kept doing it until I was 12
and we moved to this town. There were guys here I could be friends with
and I was starting Junior High, so I put those feelings away and I guess
I thought I outgrew it. It wasn't until you moved in that the feeling
popped up again. Reading your diary made me feel like something was
wrong with me, but I couldn't put a finger on it. It wasn't until the
day we were packing Maria's stuff that I woke up. Seeing all her pretty
clothes brought up all those old feelings. Knowing that Maria and I
were close to the same size only fueled my passion, until I acted on it.
I've been dressing in her stuff any chance I've gotten. Jackie, I've
done a lot of soul searching since then, and I've come to the
realization that I want this. I want to be a girl. I'm trapped in this
body and I can't escape it." I started to cry. Jackie came over and
gave me a hug.
"Wow, Mel. You really feel like this, huh?" I just nodded my head.
"What are we going to do with ourselves?"
"I don't know," I answered. We both sat there in silence for a while.
"You should tell your mom," Jackie said.
"What?" I yelled. "I don't think so."
"I told your mom how I am."
"What?" I said again, floored by what she just said.
"When we went to my old place to clear up that stuff, I showed her my
diary and we had a long talk. She is going to help me become what I
should be. You know when I'm gone on Tuesday nights for a while?"
"Yeah, I guess."
"I'm not going to a practice, I'm seeing a psychiatrist. It's the first
step in transitioning."
"Transitioning?" I asked.
"I'm going to eventually have a sex change."
"Mom's OK with that?"
"Your mom suggested it! She has some unique insight on it. You have to
tell her, Mel. If this is the way you want to go?"
"I think so."
"Then tell your mom. Then you can see a shrink. They will help you
sort out yourself and see if that it the way you should go. I know
already that I'm going to have the full operation. It's only a matter
of time. Listen; get dressed back in your own stuff. Your mom will be
home soon."
"But if I'm going to tell her, shouldn't I be dressed like this?"
"You don't want to shock her right off hand. She'll just think your
joking. Wait until after dinner and then sit her down and tell her how
you feel. I'm telling you she will understand."
"Thanks, Jackie." I then went to my room and changed. The wait for my
mom seemed like forever, but she was home in about a half-hour after
this had passed. We ate dinner and then Jackie excused herself to her
room. My heart was racing a mile a minute. I took a deep breath and
asked mom if she could sit and talk. We went into the living room and
sat. I don't remember where I got the strength, but I just let it all
out. I told her everything: about growing up feeling the way I did,
about the times dressing in her clothes, about it all. After what
seemed like hours (but was only an hour), mom sat there with a stunned
look on her face.
"I... are you sure, Mel?"
"Yes mom, this is how I really feel. I can't help it."
"Well, I guess we'll have to do what we're doing with Jackie. I want
you to see a psychiatrist. I know a good one that deals with issues
like you are having. It won't be the same one, but she is good from
what I hear." Mom said.
"How do you know this stuff?" I asked her.
"I never told you about your Uncle Harold, did I?"
"No."
"He was gay. He did it all his life and was miserable. None of us knew
and..." She started crying. I handed her some tissues. "He was my
favorite brother. We were so close. I should have noticed something.
He hung himself when he was around your age." She started crying again.
I started too. "He didn't want to shame our family, at least that what
his note said. He hated himself and wanted to be free of his feelings.
I don't want you to feel that way, Mel. If you need to change, then you
will. I want you to be happy, honey." She came over and gave me a hug.
We cried for a long time.
"Thank you, mom."
"I love you, Mel."
"I love you, Mom."
The following Monday I was sitting in Dr. Kirkland's office. Dr.
Patricia Kirkland is a psychiatrist specializing in gender and sexual
issues. The first few sessions I had with her were just question and
answer sessions between us. She wanted to know my history and wanted to
know all the background stories of my transgender behavior. I told her
all my experiences and feelings about it. After a few weeks of therapy,
Dr. Kirkland scheduled an appointment to talk to my mom. I was there
waiting in the lobby. Almost an hour went by before they called me in
to the office.
"How are you feeling today, Mel?" Dr. Kirkland asked me.
"Fine, Patricia. How are you?" I responded.
"Great. Let's get to the point. Your mother and I have discussed your
situation and I have told her what I believe your condition is. I think
you are a possible transsexual, but that is not for certain." I was
disappointed to hear this. I know what I am, and that's a girl. I was
going to chime in when she continued. "I can see you are upset over
this, but you shouldn't be. That is almost always my diagnosis in these
matters. What I told your mother is that you need to go into what I
call Stage 2. You need to show yourself and I that you can function
full time as a girl before we can continue to physically transform you.
Starting ASAP, you need to live 24/7 as a girl. Your mom and I have
discussed how you will do this, and she will fill you in on the details.
After an undetermined amount of time, generally a year, but could be
less, you can start on hormone therapy. You will still see me once a
week, but now you will be treated as a girl." She went on to make
arrangements with my mother and then we left the office.
"Mom, what are the arrangements going to be?" I asked in a hurry. I was
extremely excited and nervous over what was going to happen to me.
"Well, sweetie, tomorrow you are going to be Melissa (the name I told
her I wanted to be called as a girl.). Jackie, you and I are going to
go shopping and get you some clothes. You can't wear Maria's stuff
only. You need clothes and stuff of you own. Jackie also needs more
boy clothes."
I guess I should elaborate a little. Since I told my mother of my
desire, I have been dressing as a girl around the house. I told her I
liked the name Melissa and that's the name I will choose when I can. My
mother had a hard time of it at first, but she has not only gotten used
to me being a girl at home, but she actually likes having a girl. She
told me she secretly hoped that Jackie would grow out of her tomboy
persona early, but when she didn't she was actually happy that she would
have a girl around in me. I help her do the cooking and cleaning when
I'm Melissa and we get along better than we ever had. Mom has helped me
to do things girls do, like make up and walking in heels and girl stuff
like that.
"That sounds like fun," I answered. "But what if someone I know sees
me? They will tell everyone about me. In that regard, what about
school? Patricia wants me to be Melissa for now on, I will get murdered
at school."
"Mel, Patricia and I talked about all of this. Its no coincidence that
she waited until the school year is over to do this. Patricia wants to
give you the summer to see if this is what you truly are. If after that
time you really are Melissa, then I will arrange to have you home
schooled. As for the other times, don't worry. I guess I can tell you
that I got a promotion at work and we'll be moving in a few weeks.
You'll only have to deal with the people around here until then, so who
cares what they will think. I will be with you when you are out in
public, so there will be no threats of violence. I've planned this out
now for a few weeks between Patricia and Jackie's psychiatrist. You and
Jackie will be allowed to be yourselves for now on. Don't worry. By
the way, were going to go to a mall away from ours to go shopping
tomorrow. The only thing you need to worry about is how are you going
to get your hair done? I've gotten us appointments at my salon in the
morning."
This was all falling into place for me and I loved it! My secret is
finally free. I am going to be a girl! "Thank you so much, mom. I
love you," I said and she squeezed my hand. We went home and I changed
into Melissa (denim skirt, pink fitted cami and pink flip-flops) and
helped mom with dinner. Jackie, now Jeff, was at home playing his X-
Box. Mom went in and explained everything to him. Jeff was so thrilled
and happy to hear all this. He gave my mom and I both a hug. We had
dinner and then sat down and watched some TV for a little while and then
went to bed. I couldn't wait for tomorrow.
