John got to class and sat down next to Claire who was already in her
seat. "Hey Claire, does Andrea seem... kinda odd today to you too?"
Claire looked up from the homework she was desperately trying to finish
before the start of class. "A little, I tried to talk to her about it,
but she said I wouldn't believe her, oh, shhh, here she comes."
John smiled at her as she walked into the room, but Andrea didn't return
it and she slumped down into her chair in-between the pair. Claire put
her pencil down, having finally finished and turned to Andrea. "So, can
you still come over today Anne?" Andrea looked surprised for a moment but
seemed to cover it up quickly. "Yeah, sure, when am I supposed to come
over again?"
"Right after school is done, we were gonna walk downtown and shop for a
while."
"Oh, right I remember now." John couldn't wrap his head around what, but
he knew something was off, Andrea acted real cautious. She was asking
some weird questions, he knew she was hiding something but he could only
imagine what it was.
Throughout the class John kept a close eye on Andrea. She was avoiding
eye contact and seemed distracted the entire class. As the class was
coming to a close, the teacher had put ten problems on the board and was
calling on students to answer them. Andrea was staring up at the clock
when the teacher called out her name. She didn't respond until the second
time she was called.
"Huh? Oh, ummm." She looked up at the board. There was a triangle on the
board with two sides that were measured and a third side labeled C. she
eyed the question for a few seconds before saying, "Six point five."
The teacher nodded, wrote the answer on the board and went on to the next
question. Both John and Claire had odd looks on their faces. "Since when
do you know math that well Anne?"
Andrea was perplexed. "What do you mean? It's simple stuff."
John jumped in this time. "Yeah, but you weren't even paying attention
today, and you answered in like half a second!"
She seemed almost to wince at this statement, but she responded quickly,
"W-well I'm good at math, you know that."
"Good at math? Anne you told me you hated math yesterday!"
Now she was looking nervous. "I-I, ummm."
The bell rang, saving her from her friends' scrutiny. "Sorry guys, gotta
go!" She gathered up her stuff and left the class quickly.
John tried to catch up to her, but she made it to her last class and if
he waited any longer, he was going to be late for his class. He met up
with Claire in biology, which was awkward since they didn't have much in
common without Andrea around. John finally decided to break the silence.
"There is definitely something wrong with Andrea."
Claire nodded, without looking back at him.
"Do you think you could try and find out what it is, since you'll be
spending time with her today?"
Still not looking at him she said, "I'll try, but for her sake, not for
you."
He looked down at his desk. ("Yeah, she's still mad at me. Thankfully she
started talking to me again recently. She hasn't been too bad these last
few days, but she still has her moments when she remembers, Andrea better
be grateful for me taking the blame on that one...")
The rest of the class went on without incident or talking. Claire paid
dutiful attention to the lecture being given on Meiosis while John simply
spaced off, thinking about Andrea. After what seemed like an eternity the
bell rang and school was out.
As Claire was leaving the classroom John called out to her, "Remember!
Find out whatever you can!"
She rolled her eyes and kept on walking. "Yeah, I know."
John got his backpack from his locker and stepped outside the school
doors. He could see groups of students in small bunches along the road
next to the school, waiting for the busses to arrive, while other
students headed in the opposite direction to the parking lot. After
exchanging a few greetings and goodbyes with students he hardly knew, he
unchained his bike went off along the sidewalk towards his house. ("All I
can really do now is wait for Claire to come through.")
Claire had just gotten home. She put her school supplies away and set her
homework to the side to be finished that night. She turned her head as
she heard the doorbell ring. Before she could get there, her mother
answered the door and called for Claire to come greet her guest. At the
threshold of her house stood a rather shocked looking Andrea.
"Hey Anne... are you ok?" Claire's mother chimed, as well, "Yes dear, you
look pale, are you eating enough?"
Andrea finally shook free from her trance and responded, "Y-yes I'm fine,
are you ready to go, Claire?"
She nodded and stepped outside. "We'll be back in a few hours, mom."
Her mother smiled and called out to them as they walked down the
driveway, "Stay safe! I'll have dinner ready by six!"
Andrea took one final look backwards at Mrs. Fisher, and then fell in
line with Claire as they walked down the sidewalk.
For a few minutes there was an awkward silence. ("I don't get it, she's
like an entirely new person, she's usually so talkative.") "So ummm, how
are things going with you and John?"
Andrea looked disgusted for a brief moment and said, "Please don't talk
about that".
("Hmm? I've never seen her make a face like that when talking about
him.") She decided to press further. "What's wrong? Did he do something?"
Andrea sighed and shook her head. "No, it's nothing like that."
"Are you sure? You don't seem yourself today, and I-"
Andrea turned to face Claire. "Look, I appreciate your concern, I really
do, but this has nothing to do with John, and as much as you want to, you
can't help me with this."
Now Claire was frustrated. She was trying her best to try and help her
friend out, but Andrea kept dismissing her help. "Maybe I can't, but you
could at least confide in me. I'm your friend and I'm here for you, even
if all I can do is listen."
Andrea sighed deeply and turned to face forward once again. "I... just
don't feel like myself, that's the best way I can put it. I feel like I'm
another person, living someone else's life, I know that must seem silly,
but that's how it is."
They had now reached the downtown area, and Claire saw their first stop,
the bookstore. ("... Living someone else's life? I don't get it, an
Identity crisis maybe? There's just something odd about the way she
worded that.")
Claire had always been an avid reader since a young age. She briefly
browsed through the fantasy section, moved on through the non-fiction,
and then finally settled on a mystery book she had heard about from a
friend in school. She looked across the bookstore at Claire, who was
looking through the manga section. ("Jeez, he has her reading that stuff
too?") Claire tried to enjoy herself. She looked through some of the
romance novels. "Hmmm, they still havn't made a new book in that series
yet? It's been almost two years..."
After wandering around for a few minutes she came upon some of the...
stranger books the store had to sell. "Wow, look at these, who reads
thiss stuff?"
Andrea walked up behind her. "Yeah, I know, 'Aliens and you',
'Conspirspy's handbook'... 'The physic link between twins'? I swear, some
people will read anything."
Claire giggled quietly, and Andrea had a light smile on her face. Claire
went up to the counter and paid for her book. As they exited the book
store Claire draped her arm around Andrea's shoulders and back.
"I'm not gonna pretend to know what's going on with you right now, but it
hurts everyone around you to see you sad, so try to lighten up a little,
ok?"
Andrea looked a little uncomfortable. I, I guess."
Claire perked up upon hearing this. "Good! Now come on, we still got a
lot more places to go to!" She grabbed Andrea's arm and rushed forward,
nearly dragging her along.
"H-hey! slow down a little would you?"
The next couple of hours were rather uneventful. Andrew didn't talk very
much, but he tried not to mope or complain either. They were walking down
the sidewalk downtown when Claire asked, "So Anne, did you see what Katie
was wearing in Math today?"
Andrew tried hard to renember, but he really couldn't. "No, I didn't."
Claire then went into a long speech about how Katie always wears really
tight clothes and is a total tramp. It was lost on Andrew as he was still
trying to remember who Katie was. "(Hmmm, oh! That girl.... Yeah, now I
renember...)" He was lost in thought, thinking about her and her usual
atire, when he bumped into something and fell back and landed on his
butt.
"Hey! why don't you watch where your..." He looked up to see a boy
roughly his age, who looked equal parts angry and equal parts stupid.
"(Oh god, it's Aron. What the hell does he want?)"
The anger from Aron's face seemed to dissipate prety quickly. "Oh hey,
what's up Andrea?"
Andrew stood still for a few moments. "(... what the hell?)" Aron tried
to strighten his shirt while he said, "Hey, I was wondering, do you want
to maybye get something to eat sometime?"
"(Umm, eww, no, not even if I WAS a girl)"
Claire stepped forward with an agitated look on her face. "Leave her
alone Aron, she's already told you she's not interested."
He pushed Claire back. "Nobody asked you! Stupid bitch."
Andrew then stood up and clenched his fists. "Ok, hitting on me is one
thing, but when you hurt my freind, especcialy a girl, that's when your
asking to get your ass kicked!"
But before he could even throw his first punch, there was a flash of
movment in front of him and Aron stumbled backwards, holding his stomach.
"Wha..." He turned to his left to see Claire on her feet in a fighting
stance. "(N-no way! how did she move so fast? And since when does she
know how to fight?)"
Cclaire smirked. "Had enough yet, little boy?"
Aron coughed a few times, then lifted up his head. All signs of reason
and intelligence seemed to dissapear as he rushed forward, shouting,
"I'll kill you!"
Claire didn't even flinch as he rushed at her.
"Claire! move!"
At the last second she stepped out of his way and made a sweeping motion
with her leg, knocking him off his feet, making him land hard on the
pavement. Andrew once again stood still, dumbfounded by what he saw
unfold in front of him.
"Come on Andrea, we'll be late for dinner if we don't hurry back."
The rest of the walk and the dinenr itself was rather silent. Andrew was
absorbed in thought and Claire's mother loved to talk anyways, so he let
her, nodding when apropriate and prompted her to talk more whenever he
could. As he was walking out the door Claire and her mom were waving and
saying their goodbyes, he softly said, "Goodbye," and left, using the
walk home as an opportunity to think.
("Well, this day just gets weirder and weirder, still I just can't make
sense of one thing. Claire being able to fight, me being in home ec.,
hell, even me being John's girlfriend I can understand being a result of
me being a girl, but how...") He looked up at the moon which was rising
and uttered this last thought aloud, "How is Claire's mom alive?"
