Rubbing my wrists and ankles, I stared at the clothes that they wanted
me to put on. There was a yellow sundress, some strappy sandals and a
silver bangle and ring. I stared at myself in the mirror and anger
filled me as I saw for the first time what they had done to me. My brown

Fellows, the woman in charge of the institution you are in, and your

ways to ensure your compliance. Take her to the hole until I say
otherwise, and put her on the special diet. No beatings however, as I
don't want my handiwork damaged. Take her away."
They dragged me to a small padded cell and threw me in, and then slammed
the door and locked it. There was no light, and nothing in the cell,
except that my fingers as I felt around in the dark felt a couple of
toilet rolls and a hole for going to the toilet in.
Once a day a chink of light would appear as a grating in the door was
opened and some rations I lost count of the time I spent in there,
although it was probably a shorter time then I were put in. They varied.
Twice there was just water and no food, and then there was some salty
fish of some type but no water. Then some water and some fruit, and once
nothing at all. I never knew what if anything I would get to eat and
drink when I was in that cell.
At last they hauled me out and I scrunched up my eyes against what
seemed like really bright light. "Are you willing to co-operate,
Rosemary, or do we have to put you in another cell with no toilet
faculties and leave you in your own mess for a while?"
I nodded. "I'll do whatever you say, just don't put me back in that
cell." And I meant it as well. I was half expecting to be made to get on
my knees and perform sex acts, but instead I was ordered to get dressed.
After so long without clothes I eagerly dressed myself. There was a bra,
which took a lot of fiddling with to put on, and the clothes that I had
been ordered to wear. I was allowed to look in the mirror, and saw a
good-looking girl in a yellow dress, a thin, delicate silver bracelet on
one wrist and a silver ring with a Celtic motif on the other. There was
a necklace too, a silver Celtic cross, and silver clip on earrings for
my ears.
Although I expected to have a long beard, there was almost no hair on my
chin. "When you were out for two weeks, electrolysis was preformed on
you every day to make the hair drop out and prevent it growing back,"
one of my guards explained.
Doctor Fellows was waiting for me. "It's good to see you back, Rosemary.
Here are the rules of the institution, they are few but strict. Do not
try and escape, there is no point, behave yourself, and do whatever you
are ordered to do. And your name is Rosemary, your old name is no more
and you will be punished if you use it. There are rules for the guards
too-you are not to lash out and beat up the subject if she misbehaves,
instead you are to put her in the hole and inform me so I can decide how
long she should undergo punishment."
"Each day until you graduate from here you will be taught a new aspect
of your new life. You will be taught how to apply and take off make-up,
and how to dress, walk and act like the young lady that you now are.
Just as important, you will be taught the important memories and family
history of the girl you are to become. We are not just turning you into
a random girl, if we just wanted to do that there are males out there
who genuinely want to be female and would not only not need punishment
but would pay well for the privilege of surgery and the knowledge of how

And so my training began, and I meekly did my best so that I would not
be sent back to the horrors of the hole. If they were training me to
take on somebody else's identity, then they were going to let me out of
wherever I was being held to take that identity on. And then would be
the time to escape or expose what had been done to me.
First I was taught how to put on and remove make-up. With my early
efforts I looked like a clown but gradually I got better at it until it
made me look good. It was really hard to leave it alone and feeling the
lipstick or lip gloss on my mouth was the worst thing about it. I had to
lotion myself up each night as well. Then came deportment, which was
how to walk like a girl, carry myself like a girl and keep my legs
together when I sat down wearing a skirt.
After that it got more interesting as I was taught how to play the piano
and other such skills that Rosemary had possessed. I was given her books
and diaries to read and pictures of her family and friends. I read a lot
of romance novels and girl detective stories, along with classic stories
and historical tales as well. I was given Cosmo and other magazines of
that type, and although secretly I turned my nose up at the articles, I
read them as I was told. Quite a lot of what I read, apart from the
stuff on how to get a boyfriend of course, was interesting, and as time
went by I took a perverse pride in being as much like Rosemary as I
could and allowing her to live again through me.
The guards ceased being unkind and were in fact quite pleasant with me,
and the one who had wanted to hit me earlier was never left alone with
me. I was only once punished again, when a bug that had somehow got into
the institution bit me on the hand. It itched horribly and I started
scratching. "Stop scratching," said one of the guards and I ignored him,
and he called for help. Two guards handcuffed my hands behind me with
padded handcuffs and some anti-itch cream was put on the bite. With my
fingers kept away from it, the itch went away.
"We're not going to put you in the hole for this," said one of the
guards, "as all of us have suffered itches at some time or other and we
know how you feel. If you don't scratch or rub that bite we'll uncuff
you right now. If you just get a normal itch and it's not down there,
you can give it a quick scratch, but if you get a bug bite or a rash you
have to use cream."
I nodded and the handcuffs came off. By now I was trusted with a
feminine watch, and was allowed to watch the TV programs that Rosemary
liked. Dr Fellows came to see me and announced "I have good news for
you, Rosemary. Tomorrow you are going to be taken off this island and
sent to meet your new parents and start your new life. Your cellphone
and home phones will be bugged of course and you will be secretly
watched. And besides in time you may grow to enjoy your new life too
much to want to leave it and lose everything."
I smiled and she continued, "I think I'll give you a little reward, a
short walk in the moonlight." She placed a silver torc around my neck
and passed a control unit to a guard. "Inside this torc is a small but
powerful Taser, which can drop you in seconds if you try to run away.
Also, remember you are on an island so there is no way of escaping
anyway, even if the Taser jams."
A couple of guards escorted me to a lift and I was taken up to the top
floor and stepped out into the cool night air. I found myself walking
along a beach under the moon and stars. To the east I could hear the
sounds of the sea and see the lights of a ship as it sailed past the
island. I realized that when I was released from here I would have no
idea where I had been held, so if I escaped, or even if I made use of my
new identity to rise to a unofficial position of influence, I could
never avenge myself on my captors.
