In the hills of Virginia, a balding man with white hair steps into a
secluded cabin. The interior is homey and well-lit.
"Status report?" the man asks.
From a couch against a wall, a bespectacled younger man with black hair
says "all programs seeing a positive response. The news about Iowa,
Colorado, and New Mexico has been leaked. Governor Palin and the
writers are tweaking her stump speech to target more specifically.
Damage control surrounding the Powell announcement is seeing fruition.
The Mondale plan is turning about a dozen people per day per
canvasser--"
"The Mondale plan?" the older man interrupted. "You idiots actually used
the Mondale plan?"
"Well, we used it as a base. Governor Palin made some improvements,
made use of twenty years of technological advancements."
"Don't give me that!" the older man snapped. "We shouldn't have used it
in '84, and we damn well shouldn't be using it now."
"Like I said, Senator," the younger man explained, trying to remain
dead-pan, "we made some improvements."
"It doesn't matter if you made improvements; the premise of the plan was
to take away free will. I won't stand for--" the older man stopped
short, narrowed his eyes towards the sitting congressman, and crept
closer to the couch, "What 'improvements,' precisely, did you make,
Eric?"
"Well, by using skin contact in addition to visual cues, we can create a
full memory and personality override."
The older man's face darkened as he said through gritted teeth, "and
which memories and personalities have you been using to override the
population, exactly?"
"We started with pretty generic stuff," the younger man said, some
nerves beginning to show in his voice, "but as the news cycles went on,
Governor Palin suggested we integrate current events into the new
voters."
The older man exploded: "I thought I told you that Governor Palin was
not allowed to make big-girl decisions anymore!"
"Senator, please--"
"I don't care! How long has this been going on?"
"That's what I was getting at, sir," the younger man said, straightening
himself out, "This is that 'side-project' you suggested she take on
after her debate."
"That was to keep her *away* from the campaign, not to give her
something this important. Don't you understand? I can't win!"
"Sir, with all due respect, that's just not true," the younger man said
reassuringly. "If you can get Pennsylvania and hold all the swing
states--"
"You don't understand. I cannot win. I cannot be allowed to win. I am
the wrong person for this country at this time."
The younger man was caught off-guard for a moment, but managed to ask
"If you think that way, then why are you running?"
"A year ago, I should have been the president. Six months ago, I should
have been the president. Three months ago, I should have been the
president. But the problems of this country have gotten too big for me.
Too big for a man that's seventy-two years old. In anything resembling
a normal situation, I know I'm the better candidate, Eric. But in a
crisis America needs a stable figurehead, and that's never going to be
me. Do you realize the entire world economy almost collapsed? We can't
play games with people's heads at a time like this."
"The presidency isn't just about you, sir."
"No, it isn't. It's about doing what's right for America. It's about
putting country first. And right now, right at this moment, I am not
right for America."
"And you're telling me a guy who pals around with terrorists is right
for America?"
"That's crap, and you know it. It's bad enough we've been saying that
kind of stuff on TV, don't tell me you actually believe it yourself."
"But I do. Sincerely. That's why I supported putting that into the new
memories."
"You did *what*?" The older man's anger redoubled. "How many victims
so far?"
"Senator, 'victims' is a harsh--"
"How many victims?" The younger man's relative calm only made the older
man lose his patience all the more.
"I'd say somewhere in the low five thousands."
"The lady who called Barack an Arab at my rally, was she one of yours?"
"No, Senator, but she fed the models for every new voter since then."
The younger man thought for a moment, then added, "Probably about two
thousand individuals."
"Two thousand like her?" The older man reeled, "Do you realize what
you've done? You've set the country back a decade! I'm trying to
marginalize these people, not make more of them!"
"I'm sorry?"
The older man realized he'd let something slip. "This does not leave
this room, do you hear me, Eric?"
The younger man nodded solemnly.
"When Barack and I had that meeting with the administration and the
party leaders right after the crisis, when I suspended the campaign, I
didn't say anything at that meeting. I observed. I observed, and I saw
Barack take control of the meeting. I've seen true leadership in my
time, and though I disagree with him on a lot, that kid is a true
leader.
"So what do I do with a campaign that no longer has a purpose? I
changed focus. If I'm not going to take control of this country, I can
at least move it in the right direction while I'm in the spotlight,
right? It's easy when your campaign managers are so single-minded.
Take the hardest of hard-line party stances. Defend the indefensible.
Get as many people as possible as vocal as possible about the most
obviously wrong statements, and society will weed them out.
"Do you think I want to be known as the guy who ran a dirty campaign?
I've spent the last eight years trying to clean up campaign practices.
I don't want this to be America's final view of who I am! But by making
that sacrifice, by turning myself into a monster, maybe I can take away
the stinger from some of those people who force campaigns into this kind
of mess. Maybe I can convince people that negative doesn't work. 'look
at washed-up McCain, see what dirty politics did to him?' I do enough
to make it believable, but I'm obviously using flawed strategies. I'll
be washed-up and ridiculed. But the country will be the better for it."
As the Senator gave his explanation, the congressman slowly grew visibly
upset. He remained collected, but he clearly did not like what he was
hearing. When the older man finished he said, still deadpan but visibly
shaken, "Who do you think you are, Senator?"
"Excuse me?"
"If you didn't want the job, why didn't you step down, let someone
capable take control?"
"What, and let someone else lose the race instead? You can't change
candidates with two months to go. We were going to lose, it was just a
matter of how, and what lasting effect we'd have afterward."
"You're toying with people."
"No. I'm exposing people for who they are. You're toying with people.
The Mondale plan! I want it halted. As soon as possible, right now if
you can do it, I want every unit withdrawn. See what you can do about
reversing any effects." The older man moved towards the cabin door.
"But Senator McCain--"
"Stop the program now. That's the final word." As the Senator slammed
the door behind himself, the lights in the cabin flickered, then dimmed.
For several seconds, the congressman sat in near-darkness, but as the
lights slowly lit themselves, his eyes shifted from brown to a brilliant
blue, dissolving his glasses, and his black hair snaked its way down to
his shoulders. His face subtly re-arranged, changing from the face of
Virginia Congressman Eric Cantor, to that of Minnesota Congresswoman
Michele Bachman.
With a Stepford smile plastered to her face, the woman said to some
invisible audience, "Senator McCain, you don't understand. There are
more important things than your principles on the line, here. My own
re-election might be at stake. I initiated the Mondale plan, created a
team of devout canvassers out of half-assed libertarians, I've already
earned myself hundreds of voters in my district and thousands across the
country, and I will see it through. Perhaps you just need some
convincing. I guess the next time we meet, we will find out precisely
what lipstick does to an Arizona Senator."
The lady began to laugh as John McCain's limousine rolled down the dirt
road back down the hill. He couldn't have heard a word she said, and
there was nobody else for miles around.
The conversation that afternoon was held between two people. Two
individuals isolated together. But its effects would reach far beyond
the cabin, beyond the hills of Virginia. Lines were drawn in an
invisible war that most Americans would never even be aware of, but it
would affect them to the very core or their minds.
