Scissors Sisters - Chapter Twelve
After the lady mayor had left I sat drinking my fourth coffee that
morning. I had told her I would think long and hard, but the problem was
I just didn't have two million dollars sitting around. More importantly,
I was dammed if I was going to get tangled up in a tax evasion deal. I'd
been there before and knew exactly how foreign transvestites were treated
by Sun Belt, Christian fundamentalist Judges. I had been really lucky the
last time so never again.
That would leave a Sword of Damocles over my head for an eternity; well,
six years before the statute of limitations ran out. Six years was long
time to try and stay sweet with a politician like this new lady mayor.
'No' I concluded; it was an impossible deal! There had to be another way
and I racked my brains. I had some equity in my properties but I wanted
that as a buffer for the hard times that always came around in the
property game.
I don't know how it is but sometimes in your life, your luck finally
changes. It came to me in a strange way when one of the main backers
in the stockyard development died leaving a rich widow and a greedy
daughter. I knew the guy from some time back and had occasionally done a
few small deals with him.
The stranger thing was that he had also had a son by his first wife but
the son was a transvestite and I had never known about this other kid. He
had never spoken about this kid and I suppose he was ashamed of him or
something. It was the kid who came to me for he had obviously heard about
me through some friend of his father's.
I met the kid one evening nervously scanning the entrance to the club and
I learned that he was a young tranny. Naturally, I immediately felt
sympathetic towards his problems. God knows! I'd seen enough of that
stuff myself. The kid needed a hand up. His name was Virginia and I had
got to know him, or more properly her, when he was a young frightened boy
finding his feet as a girl. Life had apparently become impossible for her
back home and she had finally run away. She was a stunningly attractive
kid and I soon got to know her quite well.
For a couple of those years she worked stacking bottles and washing up in
the back room behind the bar and this job kept her body and soul
together. When she stopped working in the taproom, I lost track of where
she was working however I still knew where she lived.
Because she was a tranny kid trying to make her way, I had shown an
unusual amount of philanthropy and rented her a tiny, one windowed
apartment, it was tiny apartment that had been cobbled together by
Charlie and Eddie from some spare space between the lift shaft and the
maintenance ducts. It was a really cheap apartment because all the sounds
of the lift motor and the service supplies like water noises and stuff
percolated through the walls. This Kid Virginia had been desperate to
find somewhere and I had let her rent it at a ludicrously low rent. She
was quite literally hiding from her wicked stepmother and this proved to
be a safe haven where she could literally hide away if threatened.
Call me daft or soft hearted, but she was a decent kid and the apartment
was proving difficult to let. She cried when I let her have it for a
peppercorn rent especially when she realised there were no strings
attached. No perverted sex, no unwanted visitors no hidden clauses in the
contract. After she stopped working for me I continued to meet her
occasionally at the club and of course every month when she religiously
came to pay her rent, cash on the nail faithfully.
However she sank below my radar for a while and when she resurfaced, she
was doing pretty well as a model no less! She was tied up with some gay
crowd who ran a boutique up town. Then I began to meet her again pretty
often in the club for she had reached eighteen and become something of a
celebrity. I was really pleased for her as her career started to take off
and soon she was an international model. I expected her to move onwards
and upwards then move out of the tiny apartment she rented.
To my surprise she stayed and when I asked her why, it seemed that the
tiny apartment served as a perfect hidey-hole. It was discreet, the door
faced the wrong way in an alcove behind the lift shaft and it resembled a
simple maintenance access so nobody really noticed it. Indeed, most of
the other tenants didn't even know the apartment existed. The lift noises
and water sounds blanked off the sounds of her occupancy and nobody but a
few of us knew the apartment was there. It served Virginia's ends
perfectly. It was discreet, anonymous and almost secret.
To reinforce its anonymity, Virginia had, (with my permission,) removed
the door number and purchased a sign saying 'maintenance'. From the
outside, Virginia's three small windows could easily have been mistaken
for either of the apartments on each side especially as one of the
windows was the opaque glass belonging to her bathroom.
You may be wondering what all this is about so I'll tell you. The upshot
was that after Virginia turned eighteen there was some business with her
father's will. It seemed her father Harry had wanted heirs and there was
some deal about Virginia inheriting if she somehow fathered children. I
didn't have much to do with it at first because Virginia told me that her
stepmother had fucked up her young body with hormones and drugs so that
she would never father children.
Her stepmother had overdosed her with illegal hormones during childhood
and stuff. I felt sorry for the poor kid but there was nothing I could
do. I had known Harry, Virginia's dad before he died and I knew he had
been keen to hand his empire on but he had never mentioned Virginia. I
never even knew Virginia existed until she ran away from her stepmother
and turned up at my place.
Harry's first wife, Virginia's mother, had died long ago and his second
wife had never impressed me. She was definitely the gold-digging type.
Anyway, it seemed that Virginia had found some doctors who could do
something for her and she turned up in my office one evening a few years
later after having fathered two kids. It was some sort of test-tube
medical miracle apparently.
One evening as I busied my self with the accounts she arrived to pay her
rent and she asked to chat. I was a bit preoccupied with my accounts that
evening but the girl had never approached me like this before so I turned
from my computer with a patient smile. We ended up talking late into the
night as she explained her predicament.
"It's a huge estate," she explained.
"I know. Your dad Harry owned a fair chunk of this town not to mention
stuff all over the state."
"That's just a small piece of it," added Virginia as she wagged her head.
"There's stuff all over, New York, Chicago, even New Orleans. It's all
over the country. I'm way out of my depth. I'm gonna' need help!""
"So, you've got some good advisers on your dad's old team. I know a
couple of them. Get them to help you."
"I'm not sure who. Some of them are still in with my bitch stepmother."
"Well find out who they are and get rid of them. You're the boss now."
"Yeah but the trouble is, I don't know which ones."
"Set a few tests. Find out which way they jump. That's the way to go."
"And what tests would those be?" wondered Virginia.
I pulled up short. The poor girl was just so na?ve. I thought long and
hard then smiled. I had had a brainwave. There was the deal with the site
on the other side of the mall, the big retail chain. It had been nagging
at me now for a couple of weeks and I was desperate to find a solution
that would please Amanda the lawyer and her boss, the Lady Mayor, if only
to get them out of my hair. I studied Virginia for a moment and she
reflected my gaze in her own vivid blue eyes.
"Penny for your thoughts," she smiled.
"It's a sight more than a penny girl," I replied. "What d'you know about
that land beyond the stockyard development? The rough land beyond the new
mall."
Virginia frowned.
"I've never thought about it. It was just old collecting corrals and
holding pens at one time wasn't it?"
"Yeah, well it's become prime land now kid, what with the flood
protection scheme and the rapid transit line."
"Is it for sale then?" asked Virginia.
I smiled at her naivety. Virginia obviously had little to do with her
property empire. Mind you, I couldn't blame her. She turned a handsome
income from her modelling and the sudden inheritance, whilst hugely
advantageous, was obviously not her cup of tea. Virginia had made her own
way and modelling clothes was where she shone. Property was completely
new to her. I explained the situation concerning the old widow and
Virginia slowly grasped the deal.
"How much is the deal worth?" she finally asked.
"The old lady's asking for a couple of million."
"It's got to be worth more than that if that supermarket chain is after
it."
"Now you're getting the idea," I grinned, "of course it is, but the old
widow's of the same mind as the city council. We need a new stadium and a
park on this side of town, especially by the river."
"Do we?" wondered Virginia.
"We do if we want to keep the city council sweet. Besides, they have ways
of showing their gratitude when it comes to other deals. Believe me
Virginia, if you buy one plot and I buy the other then it'll sweeten a
lot of deals in the future. Besides, a million's chicken feed to you."
"So why don't you buy both the plots?" she asked.
I admired her inquisitiveness. At least the girl wasn't a bimbo. I
replied honestly, "I can't afford it. I can only raise a million from my
own resources and I'm not about to take another mortgage for the second
million just to be a bloody philanthropist."
Virginia grinned.
"But you are a philanthropist. Look at my apartment. You rent that to me
for a song."
"Yeah, well that's history. I'm surprised you still like living there.
Now are you up for this deal or not?"
Virginia sat silent for a few moments then nodded.
"I'm doing you a big favour by coming in with you. It's you that stands
to gain by sweetening the city council."
"Yes, you're right. But it'll also help you and it'll raise your esteem
with the suits on your own board. If you come to them with this deal,
you'll earn their respect. Nobody knows about it yet. It will also winkle
out any board members who might have interests elsewhere."
Virginia nodded then poured some more coffee. We sat back and sipped our
coffees as I explained how the deal could smooth the way for another deal
I had planned. Virginia finally agreed so I started making
arrangements. Two mornings later, we visited the old widow and her lawyer
in her care home and completed the purchase before anybody got wind of
the deal. Virginia came away grinning.
"Jeeze! Is it always that simple?"
"No, it's only because she knows me and likes what I did with the
warehouses and mills. She trusts me."
"Yeah, it's always who you know not what you know," Virginia finished.
We parted company outside the gates and the following Monday Virginia
took the deal to her board as a faite accompli whilst I showed the deeds
to Samantha down at City Hall. She grinned and called the Lady Mayor.
Almost immediately I could hear heels clicking urgently down the corridor
as she burst into Samantha's office and hugged me eagerly.
"Good God Girl! You move quickly. How did you do it?"
"Property deals are my business," I remarked. "Put it down to experience.
I'll hold onto the deeds for a couple of years then sell them to City
Hall when the time is right."
"Is that a promise?" asked the mayor uncertainly.
"Trust me."
The mayor and Samantha exchanged uncertain looks. They had no choice but
to trust me. After sharing a cup of morning coffee, the mayor's heels
clicked purposefully away as Samantha grinned.
"Where did you get the money?" she frowned.
"That's for me to know and you to find out."
"I was hoping to have a slice of that action," she replied ruefully.
"There'll be plenty more opportunities," I said, "Save your cash. This is
a loss leader. Anyway, philanthropy's not your strong suit."
"That's not fair," protested Samantha.
"Come on Girl. This is Petra you're talking to."
"Well, I can easily find out who's helping you. The change of ownership
has to be registered with the state government for tax purposes."
"Yeah, but the beneficial owner is registered out of state, even out of
the USA." The beneficial owner's real identity is only known to the
Federal authorities. How much clout d'you have?"
Samantha sulked. She had clout but not that much. It would take her
months to pull enough strings to get to the information. By that time the
whole deal would be done and dusted. I offered her another angle and
another deal I had on the back boiler.
"Look, forget this deal. It's done. I've got another deal cooking. If you
want a slice of that action, I can cut you in. After all, you're the
mother of two of my kids. That counts for something."
"Yeah, but this deal would have given me some leverage in City Hall. I
had ambitions there."
I gaped at her. I knew Samantha was ambitious but she had never revealed
this side of her hopes.
"What sort of ambitions?" I asked curiously.
"Public office, mayor even, state governor possibly."
I pulled a wry expression.
"Forget it girl. You're a lesbian. You've got too many skeletons in your
cupboard."
"I think you're too paranoid," she countered. "Gay isn't much of an issue
these days. But if I proved that I had philanthropist credentials then
the road might be easier."
"What about having a transvestite she-male as a father to your
illegitimate children?"
"Not many people know that," she declared, "and I think I can trust you
to be discreet. I can pass myself off as an unmarried mother who refuses
to embarrass the father."
"Well good luck kid. If it's any use to you I can cut you in on my side
of this deal but the other partner remains anonymous for now."
"How much is that."
"I'm in for a million, give or take, how much have you got."
"Nothing like that, less than a hundred thou."
"Well, that would reduce my exposure. OK then, I'll cut you in for a
hundred grand and I'll fix something up. But give it a month or so for
the dust to settle. Don't forget, you're a council executive officer and
there's legal issues."
She looked at me condescendingly.
"I'm a lawyer for God's sake Petra!"
"Yeah, and that's exactly what makes me nervous," I replied.
If looks could kill I would be toast by now but I was used to lawyers.
Samantha's anger rolled off my back like water off a duck. She could take
it or leave it. My aim was to keep the mayor sweet. Samantha, at that
moment, was just a cog in the machinery. Still it suited my long-term
aims to oil as many cogs and wheels as I could. And I wasn't doing
anything dishonest. I picked up my briefcase and left her office feeling
really pleased with myself.
A few days later Virginia turned up in my office.
"You were right about the board members," she declared.
"Go On," I encouraged her.
"Three of them had interests in the supermarket chain. They all tried to
dissuade me, privately of course. Once they came out of the woodwork it
was a simple task for me to dig a little and discover their interests.
You can't trust anybody can you?"
I grinned as we shared a pot of coffee.
"The first lesson of business darling, find out who your enemies are."
She gave me their names and I smiled with inward satisfaction. My
suspicions had been right about two of them but the third name had
surprised me. A few days later the deal was done and dusted. A couple of
months later I cut Samantha in for her hundred grand. It had taken her
the extra time to raise the whole sum.
After the deal was completed, Virginia invited me to join her board and I
was happy to oblige.
It didn't mean much financially but it put me at the centre of another
circle of contacts. It also introduced me to another circle of tranny
friends who were involved with Virginia's modelling and fashion
activities. A tranny couple named Simone and Dorie Lou ran their uptown
boutique that had become the seed corn for a small chain of discreet,
nationwide fashion stores that discreetly pandered to trannies during the
late evenings whilst serving the main women's fashion trade during normal
trading hours.
The stuff they sold was of excellent quality and Virginia's modelling
career had progressed hand in glove with the boutique's national
expansion. Naturally, Simone and Dorie Lou became good friends with my
wife, Judith and I because of our similar life styles. I also got to meet
Virginia's wife, a girl called Sandie who kept a reasonably low profile
having been given two children by Virginia.
Sandie was a Latino girl from the wrong side of the metaphorical tracks.
Her parents had ostracised her when she had 'come out' as a lesbian but
once she had preformed her daughterly duties and produced twins, her
parents had reconciled themselves to Virginia and Sandie's tranny union.
For all their prejudices they had to concede that Virginia, the
stunningly attractive international model was technically and legally, a
man. Even the local priest had to concede that Virginia and Sandie's
union was legal.
Once again, Virginia and Sandie became good friends of ours when they
learned of our own tranny union. It seemed at last that life was looking
up for Judith and I. A couple of months later I was delighted to receive
a letter from dear Uncle Reggie. He had learned of my affairs in America
and desperately wanted to meet Virginia.
'After all my dear sweet nephew,' wrote Uncle Reggie in his letter from
England, 'I was in the fashion trade myself so I would dearly love to
meet this divine girl Virginia.'
I couldn't refuse my great uncle such a pleasure and a few weeks later
Judith and the children met their favourite great uncle and grandmothers
at Chicago airport then drove down the following day to meet me. Uncle
Reggie and Virginia immediately hit it off having a common interest in
fashion and design. Even more amusing was when Virginia learned that
Uncle Reggie was a titled Earl.
"What!!" she squealed in delighted surprise. "You mean you dress in
ermine and all that business with the crowns and gowns and stuff."
Uncle Reggie smiled as he riposted,
"Well yes darling, but in truth I prefer mink or fox to ermine. Creams
and silvers to boot."
Virginia giggled as she hugged my frail old uncle and turned to me.
"You never told me you stood to inherit a title. A bloody Earl, no less!"
"Steady on Vinny," I grinned, "Uncle Reggie's not dead yet."
"Does that mean you'll be leaving America when you do inherit?"
"It won't matter darling," I replied, "the way things are now, I'll be
able to commute between countries, the U.S and the U.K."
"I hope you'll invite me over when you do."
"Oh don't worry, we'll be going over there before then. The kids are even
going back with Reggie when the summer vacation starts."
Thus was my life made content.
