Prologue

The first official case of gender mutation had been reported sometime in
January of 1949. Nobody knew exactly how or where it started, but it
changed the lives of everybody in the world. The mutation was eventually
named Brubaker Syndrome after Dr. Howard Brubaker, the British doctor
who first identified it in 1950. He was also the same doctor that
discovered that the mutation only affected males that were around 18
years old. The youngest male known to have been affected had been
seventeen years six months old, while the oldest had been nineteen years
two months old. This age range came to be known as the "Bru Zone".
Once infected, a male changes completely into a female, becoming
indistinguishable from any naturally born female. The transformation
normally occurs over the period of a week. Most of the soon-to-be
female's internal changes usually occur in the first twenty-four hours,
while the full transformation normally takes seven to ten days.
Even now, no cure has been found.
Chapter 1
September, 2008
Danny McKay drove his mid 90's Dodge Neon into the parking lot of Lake
Mary High School on his first day of senior year. After parking, he
grabbed his backpack and anxiously walked into the main quad of the high
school. Being a new kid in school wasn't easy, especially when going
into the 12th grade. On top of that, he was quickly nearing his
eighteenth birthday. While Brubaker Syndrome had been around for almost
60 years, there was still no cure, and therefore every eighteen year old
male dreaded entering the Bru Zone. He wasn't really afraid of turning,
but he was still rather nervous about it happening in a new place where
he didn't really know anybody yet.
Two months ago, Danny's father, Robert McKay, took a promotion at work,
being relocated to a city near Orlando. Danny wasn't keen on leaving all
his friends behind, but with the wavering economy, he knew his father
made the decision with his family's best interest in mind.
Danny collected his thoughts as he neared his home room. He glanced at
his class schedule for the umpteenth time to make sure he was going to
the right room. Settling in a desk near the front of the room, he looked
around and noticed that many of the other kids were looking at him with
curiosity in their eyes. He was short, standing at only 5'7". He kept
his auburn hair long, just below his shoulders. In this day and age, it
was unusual to see a male with long hair. Most boys wore their hair
short as a way to proclaim their masculinity. The ones who kept their
hair long often claimed to do so only because it would make it easier
for them if they turned. Danny didn't care about superstition or the
stigma attached to having long hair. There were still men who had long
hair, although they were almost always well past the "Bru Zone".
As the bell rang, a tall blonde in her late twenties walked into the
room and made her way past the students to the front of the room. After
setting her purse and tote bag on the teacher's desk, she faced the
class and began to speak.
"Welcome to your senior year. I am Ms. Elizabeth Carter. I am your home
room teacher for the year. Now, before we head over to the auditorium
for Doctor Jackson's usual beginning of the school year speech, I need
to get roll call done."
Reaching into her tote bag, she pulled out a list of the students' names
and began to call each of their names. After the roll was called, she
asked Danny to introduce himself since he was new to the school.
"My name is Danny, I'm turning eighteen next month, and I'm from
Southern California."
Ms. Carter asked Danny if he had any hobbies.
"I'm a musician. I play guitar, bass, and drums."
"Have you ever been in a band?" asked Megan Adams.
"Yes. We actually broke up because I moved out here. A couple of guys on
my block offered to let me play in their band, but I'd rather focus on
writing my own stuff for a while before I get into another band."
"Well, Danny, it's nice to have you here. We hope you like it in
Florida," said Ms. Carter.
"I like it so far," replied Danny.
"Good. Alright, let's get going before they send a rescue party for us."
Walking into the auditorium, Danny could see this school had a much
larger male population than his last high school. Sitting down next to
one of his home room classmates, Danny heard the principal clearing his
throat to get the attention of everyone in the auditorium.
"Good morning, students. For those of you who don't know, my name is Dr.
Richard Jackson. This will be my final year as principal of Lake Mary
High. I am proud to have served at this school and I expect every single
one of you to get the education that you deserve. Since this is my final
year, I will be taking a much more active role this year in making sure
this school will continue to be one of the best in Central Florida long
after I am gone. This is also the largest class the school has ever
seen. With over three thousand students, I know things will get crowded
and tense. The senior class alone has almost seven hundred students, and
nearly 340 boys nearing or already eighteen. We have brought in more
teachers to teach Brubaker Health class, so we should have everything
under control this year. Let me introduce the new teachers."
Dr. Jackson began introducing the teachers one by one, and the classes
they would be teaching. When he got to Ms. Carter, Danny was shocked to
find that she was a Brubaker Health teacher. It shouldn't have shocked
him so much, Danny realized, because of how tall she was. It was common
knowledge that nearly every teacher who taught that class was someone
who had turned.
After the introductions were done, Dr. Jackson finished his speech and
released everybody back to their classes.
The rest of the morning went by fast for Danny. During lunch, he
overheard some girls at an adjacent table talking about getting tickets
to the New Girls on the Block reunion concert. Knowing his sister had
been into them, he thought it would be nice if he got her a ticket to go
to the concert. Being six years older than Danny, Jennifer had taken him
to several concerts over the years. One of his favorites had been a
Flogging Molly concert just the year before. He stood near the stage and
watched the guitarist so he could try and learn the music as the
guitarist played.
After lunch, Danny finished his classes for the day and went home.
Pulling into the driveway, he saw an ambulance in front of his next door
neighbor's house. Going inside, his mother greeted him with a big hug
and informed Danny that the boy next door, Alex, had just turned.
"So," Danny said, "now I know why the ambulance was there."
"Yes, and from what his, or rather her, mother told me, he, um she, had
a particularly bad turn," Denise McKay said.
Danny thought contemplatively about what would happen if he turned.
Would it be a painful turn? Or would it just be one of the normal ones?
'Normal,' Danny thought. 'Who would've thought 60 years ago that
changing genders would now be considered normal?'
Later that night, after the usual evening of watching TV, Danny told his
parents that he was going to bed, and headed up stairs. Getting ready
for bed, he stared in the bathroom mirror and wondered what he would
look like as a girl. He couldn't help himself, and he knew every male in
the world must have done the same at one point or another in their 18th
year of life. Crawling into his bed, he set the TV sleep timer and
turned off his bedroom light.
Danny woke up in pain, and was having a hard time catching his breath.
Looking at the clock, he saw it was nearly 4 o'clock in the morning. He
tried calling out for his parents, but could barely say anything louder
than a whisper. Trying to get out of bed, he doubled over in pain and
fell to the floor. Hearing a loud thump, his parents came running into
his room.
"Danny? Danny, what's wrong," his mom asked.
Danny gasped for air as he looked fearfully into his mother's eyes.
"Robert, I think he's turning," Denise said to her husband.
"Go call 911," Robert said.
Danny's mom ran into hers and her husband's room and grabbed a cordless
phone, dialing 911 as she ran back into Danny's room.
"Yes, I need an ambulance," she said when an operator picked up the
line. "My son is going to be 18 next month, and my husband and I think
he's turning. He seems to be in a lot of pain, and he can't breathe very
well."
The 911 operator told Denise the paramedics were on the way, and to stay
on the line until they got there. Robert went downstairs to wait for the
ambulance.
Danny gasped and doubled over, clutching his lower abdomen. He couldn't
see straight, and was starting to feel very light headed. Less than 5
minutes later, Robert returned, escorting the paramedics into Danny's
room. When the paramedics moved Danny's hand from his abdomen, they saw
blood coming from his groin area. Denise began to panic, and started
crying. The paramedics transferred Danny from his bed onto a stretcher,
and began to wheel him out of the house and towards the waiting
ambulance.
