Claire carefully adjusted her wig, and checked over her makeup one more
time. She was making sure the collar of her purple velour jogging suit
was smoothed diwb when she heard her lover Melissa call, "Hurry, darling,
if you can, the car's here."
"Be right there, love." Claire stared back at the 75-year-old woman she
saw in the mirror. There were lines in her face that hadn't been there a
year earlier; those that had already been there were more deeply etched.
The last several months had been rough, battling ovarian cancer. She
seemed to be in remission for now, but the surgery, radiation and
chemotherapy had exacted their toll, including the loss of her hair,
which was just beginning to grow back. The doctors had been optimistic
after the last round of tests had found no sign of the cancer, and
Melissa had assured her she had beaten it, but Claire wasn't sure,
something told her that her journey on earth was nearing its end, and she
was at peace with that, completely at peace.
It had been a fabulous adventure, far beyond her wildest imaginings. She
had been born a male in the mid-twentieth century, filled with longings
to be magically transformed into a girl, never believing for a moment
such a thing was actually possible. Then one night he (he was Bob then)
and a fellow fan of TG fiction on the 'net named Troy found themselves
whisked back to the middle of the twentieth century, 1953 to be exact, to
assume the lives of two young women raising two young girls.
Their portal of entry had been a small town movie theater, the Majestic.
They entered as males, expecting to see the film Mona Lisa Life, a tale
of women's lives in that simpler time half a century earlier. Before the
film started they fell asleep; they awakened in the same theater, but it
was now 1953 and they were two women named Claire and Melissa, and they
were raising two young girls, Rose and Patricia.
It took them a while to sort it all out. It turned out that it was all
the work of an angel. The original Claire had died of shock after
learning her husband had been killed in the closing days of the Korean
War. The angel had whisked Bob back in time and implanted his soul in
Claire's body so the girls wouldn't be left orphaned; and she had brought
Troy along to become Melissa, a cousin of Claire's who hadn't previously
existed. It was more than a dream come true for Bob and Troy; it was an
opportunity to live the lives they were meant to live.
For Claire, the fancy jogging suit was a concession to her weakened state
from the cancer treatment and her advancing arthritis. Much easier to get
into. The color choice, though, reflected her affinity for the poem,
"When I am an Old Woman, I Shall Wear Purple." She didn't go out in her
slippers in the rain or pick the flowers in other people's gardens, and
she still hadn't learned to spit, but she hoped she had learned the
essential lesson of the poem: to cherish every moment of life. She made
her way downstairs slowly to find Melissa waiting for her at the door.
Melissa wore a red pantsuit and matching red hat; she too embraced the
values of "When I am an Old Woman."
"Greetings, you sexy old woman," Claire said.
"We are not old!" Melissa protested as she embraced Claire.
"Oh come on, honey, I'm 75, you're 72, and if you throw in the years we
spent as males, we're both well past 100. How about old in body, but
forever young at heart?"
"I can live with that, darling." As Melissa embraced Claire, she could
feel how weak she was and how much weight she had lost. Claire, though,
was comforted by how strong Melissa seemed to be, despite her own bout
with cancer the previous year. She had found the lump on her breast in
plenty of time, and the doctors had agreed that no radiation or chemo was
needed following her surgery. She seemed as vigorous as ever.
Ovarian cancer and breast cancer; two illnesses they would have never
faced had they remained males. Yet Claire and Melissa felt no sense of
irony or resentment. They both knew that had they remained male, their
lives would have ended long before, due to loneliness if nothing else.
Even though Claire used a cane, Melissa insisted on offering her a
steadying arm as she walked from the front door of their condo to the
waiting limousine. It had been a decade since the women had sold the
bungalow that had been their home for 40 years and moved to a thriving
desert community in the southwest. Like others in their eighth decade,
they found the heat to be good for their aching bones, and more
importantly, it put them closer to their daughters. They thought of both
girls with a sense of overwhelming love and pride.
Of course, it seemed silly in one sense to still think of them as
"girls;" Pat was 53 and a grandmother of a nine-year old herself, which
meant that Claire was a great-grandma. After a painful divorce in the
early 80s, Pat had remained single for almost a decade before finding joy
with an exceptionally kind man. Rose, two years older than Pat, had
finally married for the first time five years earlier and given up her
legal career to join her husband in running a thriving winery. She became
instant stepmom to a trio of active teens, and often found herself on the
phone to her mother and aunt for advice on parenting. Both Melissa and
Claire were grateful to see both of them happy, healthy and surrounded by
loving families.
Claire squinted into the bright sun as she made her way to the limo. Even
though they had become wealthy, thanks to their ability to buy stocks of
fledgling companies at just the right time (thank you, Bill Gates and
Paul Allen); they preferred to reinvest the majority of the money to
provide a legacy for their descendants. But every now and then they
indulged themselves, and this trip to the airport would be one of those
occasions.
As the plane lifted off, Claire mused how life would take an interesting
turn for them after this evening. "No more knowing who is going to win
the World Series or be elected President of the United States. It's going
to be nice in some ways."
Melissa nodded. "I think Bush is a pretty good bet to be re-elected next
year, but who knows about the future? We might even live long enough to
see a black man elected president, or even a woman!"
"That would be nice," Claire agreed. "But I think we've asked for enough
miracles for one lifetime. Let someone else make it happen."
At one point in the flight, their talk turned to the town they had left
behind. They had loved the tight-knit community, for all of its flaws.
The people could be suspicious of outsiders, display flashes of
prejudice, and be slow to adapt to changing times. But they could also
show exceptional kindness to their neighbors, especially someone dealing
with a tragedy?a job loss, a serious illness, a death in the family.
But their town, like so many others, went into what seemed like an
irreversible decline. So many old friends died or moved away...so many
businesses closed...it finally reached the point where it was less
painful to leave than to stay. They had gotten a glance of what awaited
them on the night they traveled back into the past.
They had materialized, still in their male forms, in front of the
Majestic. The proud movie showplace of the 1940s and 50s had peeling
paint outside and a marquee with missing lights and mis-matched letters.
Inside, the plush seats were worn, stained and threadbare. But none of
that mattered; they entered as males in 2003 and emerged as females in
1953.
Another limousine awaited them at the airport. They rode toward town
with a heightened sense of anticipation. "What do you think, darling?"
asked Melissa. "Will we see two men, Bob and Troy, entering the theater
together? Will they see us? And if they do, will they recognize us?"
Claire sighed. She was already tired from the journey, but this was
something she wouldn't miss for anything. "Who knows, love? Maybe this
will be the end." Melissa frowned. Claire continued on a more hopeful
note: "Or maybe the people who say that time is a circle instead of a
straight line are right, and we'll get to live it all again." She
squeezed Melissa's hand. "I know one thing, though."
"What's that?"
"I just hope we get to see the picture this time. Remember last time? We
were going to see 'Mona Lisa Life.' During the previews, we talked about
how wonderful it would be to be women in the 1950s. But then we fell
asleep."
"I hope so too," Melissa said, before tenderly kissing her love on the
lips.
"Look!" Claire said. "There's the Majestic. And we're on time. Can we get
some popcorn?"
Melissa squeezed Claire's hands and fought back a tear. "We can get
anything you want, my love, anything you want." She thought their very
lives were a lesson that anything truly is possible, if you only believe.
