I know that the shocked look on my face must have caused Ken to take
pause in his thoughts. I looked at the ring and then looked back at Ken.
I thought about what every young girl must feel like, imagining what
their wedding was going to be like and how they were going to make all
the plans that they wanted. I never had those thoughts and now they seem
to be rushing in to my head all at once. I couldn't help it and I started
to cry. I was never overly emotional as a guy but with all these new
hormones going through me, I didn't know what else to do.
"Yes, I will marry you Ken. I never imagined I would be hearing these
words, but there is no one else I would rather be with now and forever."
With that, everyone that was in the restaurant started to applaud and the
wait staff came over and congratulated both of us.
After the fuss died down and I collected my thoughts, I leaned over to
Ken and said, "Ken, before I do marry you there is something that I must
do."
He looked at me kind of puzzled but he said, "Whatever it is will be all
right with me. What do you need to do?"
"I want to make sure that on our wedding night that I can make love to my
husband just like every woman before me has done. I want to have the
operation to make everything complete so that I will be 100% woman. It
might sound a little strange but I really want this to happen. Can you
understand why?"
"Yes I totally do my love and I support you fully. I was actually hoping
you would want to go through with it and I will be there for you. I think
that we should find a good gynecologist that specializes in this type of
operation and we can take things from there. After that you can start to
plan for the wedding of your dreams."
I felt much better after our conversation. I had been thinking about this
for a while and I really didn't want to do anything that would jeopardize
the way that Ken felt towards me or that I felt about myself. It was a
ride home that I don't think that I will ever forget. There were all
kinds of thoughts that were swirling around in my head. The next day I
planned on starting to do some research into finding out all I could
about doctors that specialized in this area and all that is involved in
the operation.

One of the first things I did when I got home was to give Kelly a call to
tell her my great news.
"That is wonderful news Charlotte. I know that all girls look forward to
this day happening to them and it is so nice to see it come about for you
like this. I will be there for you if you need any help with anything."
"I was hoping you would say that Kelly. You are my best girl friend and
you have shown me so much about being a woman. I want you involved in my
wedding and I can guarantee you that our relationship will not change at
all."
I was getting all excited just talking with Kelly and I wished that she
was right beside me now. I went on to tell her that I had thought about
it and that I was going to go through with the operation to give me a

Ken and I spent the next few weeks talking with a few people and looking
on the internet to search for a doctor who would be able to take care of
all of my needs in helping me become the woman that I now longed to be.
After doing quite a bit of research we found a gynecologist in the next
town who seemed to fit all of my needs. I called and had a nice chat over
the phone explaining exactly what my situation was and would he be
willing to talk face to face. Dr. Sanders told me that he would be happy
to meet and hopefully he could take care of everything. I told Ken that I
found someone who would be at least willing to talk with me and see if he
could help. He was happy to hear that and that he would go with me to the
appointment. I told him thanks but that I would like to take care of this
first appointment by myself and that he could accompany me to and follow
ups if everything checked out. He agreed and so the following week I was
off to see the doctor.
When I got ready to go for my appointment I wanted to make sure that he
could see that I was very serious about the surgery, so I made sure to
show him that I was female in all but the final step. I chose a very nice
skirt and sweater that accented all of my feminine features. My make-up
was flawless and my hair, which was now shoulder length with new red
highlights in it, had a very distinctive curl to it. After spritzing on a
little of Lancome Tresor on my wrists, neck and some on my cleavage I
felt that I was ready to see the doctor now.
The 15 minute drive was very uneventful as I pulled into the parking lot.
In front of me was a very modern looking building with a decorative
landscaping job done to the entrance. I walked into the entryway and
looked at the directory. Dr Sanders was on the 2nd floor so I got on the
elevator and headed up to my appointment.
As I walked in to the office the first thing I noticed was how very soft
and warm the waiting area felt. It made you feel relaxed and not at all
nervous. This was my first time ever in a gynecologist's office and I was
impressed at how I did not feel out of place. I walked over to the
receptionist's desk as she looked up and smiled.
"Hello. How can I help you today?"
"I have an appointment with Doctor Sanders today at 11:00."
"Let me check the computer here. You must be Charlotte, correct. Well,
the doctor has been right on time so far today so if you would please
fill out these medical forms for me and then bring them back I would
appreciate it."
I took the forms from the receptionist and sat down in one of the nice
soft chairs in the waiting area and began to fill out the forms. They
were just standardized forms that were looking for your insurance
information. I was lucky that a few weeks before this I had petitioned
the courts for a name change for my license and all other pertinent
records and because of my regular doctors notes everything was approved.
So it was without any hesitation that I wrote all the information out as
Charlotte.
I took the forms back up to the receptionist and she smiled and thanked
me for bringing them back. "You can just sit and relax for a few minutes
Miss Keen and the doctor will be with you shortly. If you would like
there is some water in the cooler and some new magazines to browse
through."
I thanked her and went to sit back down and grabbed the first magazine I
found. Cosmo had some very interesting articles in it, but I knew I would
not have much time to read them so I just skimmed through the pages and
studied some of the pictures on make-up ideas and some new fashion
designs.
"Miss Keen, would you please come with me?" said the nurse as she guided
me back to an office area. I sat down at the desk and the nurse said the
doctor would be in shortly. I sat down and nervously looked around at the
paintings and glanced at the pamphlets that were sitting on his desk.
It was not long before the doctor came into the room. "Good morning, Miss
Keen, I am Doctor Sanders. It is a pleasure to meet you. Please, sit down
and relax. I want to go over the notes that your doctor has sent over and
we can talk for a few minutes."
Doctor Sanders opened a manila folder and flipped through a few pages
before looking up at me.
"I see by your doctor's notes that you are well on your way with the
transformation process. Usually I start out by looking at the candidate
and going over their medical records before I make any recommendations.
But since you are more than a few steps into the process, what it looks
like we need to discuss is if you are looking for any surgery for any
facial changes and then the final process of transforming your penis into
a fully functioning vagina."
"By the looks of your development to this point, the only things I might
recommend is to work on your "Adam's Apple" and possibly a little
reshaping of your jaw line. But I must say that your facial features are
pretty much feminine as far as I can see, unless you might have had
something else in mind?
"Will there be much scaring when the work is done on my throat?"
"The techniques that are used now show very little invasive marks. If
there is anything showing it would probably be a little mark that can be
covered very easy with make-up."
I thought for a few seconds and then I told Doctor Sanders that I feel
that he had everything covered. We then had a little more conversation
about hormone replacement therapy and that hopefully my body would begin
to regulate the estrogen without too many pills. He then opened up the
computer where we looked at how a little amount of plastic surgery would
make a world of difference in my appearance.
We set up the minor plastic surgery first so all the little things would
be taken care of first. After about a month of recovery we would then
take the final step and make the whole transition complete.
"I know that this is really a moot question to ask now, considering how
you look now Charlotte, but I do need to ask this of all my patients
going through this operation. Are you really sure that you want to go
through and complete the transition to be a fully functioning woman? "
I didn't hesitate and told him, "With all of my heart and soul doctor I
want to go through this. I want to thank you for giving me this advice
and will be able to help me become what I truly want to be."
"I knew you would Charlotte but I did need to ask. We will schedule the
facial surgery with my colleague for the last Thursday of this month and
see how that goes before we make the final surgery plans."
I thanked him once again and walked out of the office like I was walking
on air. As I was leaving the receptionist stopped me.
"Well it looks like we will be seeing you again in a few weeks Charlotte.
By the way, I have to tell you that I just love the blouse you have on.
It goes really well with that skirt."
"Why thank you. Believe it or not I bought it at Macy's. It was just one
of those things where I walked in and it kind of found me. I'll see you
next time."

On my way home there were two more stop that I needed to make. I had,
with the help of Ken, made out the petition to have my name and sex
changed on all of my records. I went into the clerk of courts office and
they had everything ready for me. After picking up all of the forms that
made the change permanent I went over to the transportation office. After
getting my picture taken for my new driver's license I looked down to see
the new me staring back with the name "Charlotte Rae Keen" on the card. I
felt very happy now that at least by my name now I was legal.
After going home I began to think about all that went on today. I was
kind of excited about having all of the changes done, but at the same
time wondering how it was all going to turn out. I was totally thinking
as Charlotte now and there were no thoughts from Charlie in there.
I met Ken later on that day and told him about everything that went on
with my appointment. We talked about all of it and he said that he just
wanted me to be happy and that he would support anything I did. We stayed
in that night and I prepared a nice meal for the two of us as we sat down
and watched some TV. I laid my head on his shoulders and felt so warm
inside. I thought to myself how happy I was then and that I will be
happier when we can settle down together as man and wife.

After all of the minor surgeries were taken care of I was able to recover
pretty quickly. My face did not need much work at all since I have always
had kind of feminine looking features. The doctors were very nice and
helpful in showing me what was done and how the cosmetic surgery they did
do took away any male features. I was glad to see that my throat had a
little mark that was easily hidden and no trace of an Adam's apple at
all.
I went back to see Doctor Sanders to go over everything that he was going
to take care of. There was nothing that was needed to be done in the
chest area, since by taking the hormone pills I had developed very
nicely. The only major surgery was the one that I was coming to him for
and that was to replace by now flaccid penis with a working vagina.
" Now what we are going to do is to use the skin that is already there
and reshape your pelvic area so that you will have a vagina that will be
as functional as if you were born with it."
I looked at him a little sheepishly and said, "Will I be able to have sex
with it and have all of the feelings that go along with it?"
He smiled and tried to put me at ease. "That is always one of the first
questions that come up and I assure everyone that yes it will function as
if you were born with it. You will still have to take hormone replacement
pills until your body can start to manufacture them on their own. I think
you will be very happy with the outcome of this. So, are you ready to
take the final step?"
I nodded my head and said, "I am very much ready. When will we be able to
do this?"
He looked at his calendar and marked me down for two weeks from today. "I
will need you to check in the night before so we can get some preliminary
work done, so I will see you then. If there are any more concerns before
then do not hesitate to give us a call. Please see Kari on your way out
as she will have some special instructions for you to look at. I know you
will be very happy when we are all finished."
When I got home I took out the packet that Dr. Sanders assistant had
given me. In it were a few special instructions I needed to do before the
operation. Things like what to eat and when to fast before. Everything
else seemed to be procedures that would be done when I arrived in the
hospital.

When the day finally arrived for the operation Ken took me in to the
hospital. We got registered and were taken up to my room where I settled
in. Dr Sanders arrived a little after I got there and after some
pleasantries told Ken and I what was going to go on the following morning
and after recovery how long I would probably be in the hospital for.
After he left Ken and I sat and talked for a bit before he had to leave,
but he told me he would be in first thing in the morning as I was ready
to go into the operating room. He leaned over to kiss me goodnight and
told me he loved me.
I felt a little nervous and a bit anxious as I tried to sleep that night.
I dreamt again that night about my wedding and how absolutely wonderful I
felt as I walked down the aisle while Ken stood smiling. I must have
finally dozed off because the next thing I knew the nurse was coming in
to get me prepared for my big day.
There were just a few final instructions from the nurse as to what will
be going on before I will be placed under anesthesia and I will be out
for awhile. She said that I will be a bit groggy after I wake up in
recovery and there will be a little soreness for a day or two, but they
will manage that.
"Are you ready now to join our ranks?, " the nurse said, obviously
teasing me.
"Let's go to it" I said as I was being wheeled down to the surgical unit.

I woke up after what seemed like a few minutes but was obviously a long
day. The nurse was right in that I felt very different in that I seemed
to drift in and out for a few minutes. When I finally opened my eyes and
started to focus I got the shock of my life. There standing in front of
me was my older sister Rachel.
"Hello little sis. It's nice to see you ".
'Rachel, what a surprise this is. How did you know that I was here?"
"Well, I called your office and had a nice chat with Kelly. She told me
where you were and what was going on in your life now. I was going to try
to come around and see you before I found out all about this. It was a
little stunning but not surprising. I see by the looks of things that you
did inherit the Kean women's attributes."
I was a little embarrassed at having my sister see me, not knowing what
she already knew.
"Charlotte, like I said I was not surprised to hear about you. Mom and I
knew that you loved to try on our clothes and dabble in our make-up. Why
do you think there was always something laying out for you to see and to
try on for yourself?"
"You mean that you guys always knew? I always thought that I was so
careful."
"Silly girl! As you will find out a women knows how she put her clothes
and jewelry away and can tell if something is the slightest bit out of
place. We felt all along that you were not harming anyone and that you
seemed to take great pride in being careful, so we let you go. I think
that mom will be so happy that she now has the other daughter that she
always imagined she had."
"Oh Charlotte, we are going to have so much fun. It will be great to have
a sister to go shopping with and have someone close to talk to about the
men in our lives. Speaking of which, I understand that there is a special
someone in your life now."
"Yes there is Rachel. His name is Ken and he is the most wonderful person
I have ever met. Between him and Kelly they have brought out who you see
now. I am so happy and I can't wait for you to meet him. He has already
asked me to marry him and I said yes. I have thought about it and I was
going to call you after I got out of here but I am glad you are with me
now. I want you to be my maid of honor. I didn't know that you and mom
knew but you really helped me realize that this is who I was meant to be
and I couldn't imagine anyone else who I would want to be with me."
"I would be honored to help my new sister on her very special day. Oh we
will have so much to do. It's too bad that you didn't go through with
this change before I got married. I would have loved for you to walk down
the aisle with me as my maid of honor. Anyway, this one is going to be
extra special since you will get to experience something that a girl
dreams about all of her life in a much shorter window. Maybe what we will
do is meet mom for lunch after you have recovered and we can all get
reacquainted."
I looked at my sister with a new found sense of friendship as I am
guessing that sisters tend to be. "I would really look forward to that. I
would only hope that mom understands what I did and that she would not be
disappointed in me"
Rachel looked with excitement in her eyes as she said, "Are you kidding?
Mom had the sense that this might happen one day. Maybe she was a little
disappointed in herself as I am for not wanting to talk with you about
this before now. Let's just say we have a lot of lost time to make up for
and we are both looking forward to getting to know our new daughter and
sister. I have to leave now but I will stop back and see you and I know
that mom is really looking forward to meeting up with both of us."
She then leaned over the bed and gave me a kiss on the cheek. "I'm so
happy for you Charlotte and can't wait until we can walk around as true
sisters."
Rachel then walked out the door and I laid there in bed, feeling a
calming sensation sweeping over me. She really isn't a bad sister and
just wanted to get out of bed and give her a big hug. I'll save that for
later.

Dr Sanders came into the room a little later and after looking over my
charts asked me if there were any questions that I had right now.
"I know that you will have questions as the days go on but for now I want
you to concentrate on your recovery and to see what you new body is
capable of. In the meantime I will have one of the nurses come in to
explain some simple procedures which you will need to do over the next
month or so."
"Thank you Doctor for everything. I'm sure that as time goes on I will
have questions but at least I know where to go for the answers.
He smiled and, after patting me on the shoulder, left the room. It was
within the half hour that a nurse came in with a small box and a booklet.
"So Charlotte, are you a little more comfortable now?"
"Yes I am", I said as I was becoming a bit curious as to what was in the
box.
"I am going to talk with you for a few minutes about the new female
organs that you now possess and how there is going to be some maintenance
to make sure that you keep it in working order. I'm sure that after all
of this that you will want to have a functioning vagina and all that it
entails."
As she opens up the box I let out a little gasp as she pulls out a small

After a week in the hospital I was allowed to go back home. Ken, who had
come to see me every day, came to pick me up and take me home. I was
allowed to do a few things myself, but doctors orders were to not engage
in any sexual activity for at least two months. I had to make sure that
the muscles were all healed up and that they were able to work the way
they were supposed to do.
In the meantime I had talked with my sister quite a few times since her
visit to the hospital and I even talked with my mom. It was a little
weird talking with her as her new daughter instead of her son, but she
made it clear that she would treat me as if I had been her daughter all
my life. I cried a little as we cemented a whole new relationship and
that she would be coming over to visit me when she was able to come into
town. I so much look forward to seeing her and my sister together as we
start to plan for my wedding and my new life.
At times I can still see some memories of Charlie, but they seem to be
fading more and more into the distance. It's funny, but even some of the
thoughts that I have of dressing up in my mom's and sisters clothes seem
to me to be a normal part of growing up. Now my thoughts are of Ken and
planning our life together.
