Carol's mind was whirling with a dozen names and as many tips and comments
again, as she found herself pulled towards an area to the right of a large
island bar in the middle of a raised area at the back of the club. Down
three steps to the edge of the dance floor, negotiating their way around
its perimeter, past the knees, feet and deposited glasses of the patrons
sitting on the steps rather than standing hovering near the many seats
around various tables, of which there were many, all occupied. Some seats
had two occupants, with a third and fourth perched on the arms. The club
was packed, incredibly loud, dark and smoky, smelled of sweat, beer,
booze, perfume and cosmetics, and in some odd corners, was quite a long
way from clean. Tugged along, and seriously excited by every eye she felt
upon her, nervous, excited and seemingly totally relaxed - all at once -
Carol thought it was quite the most wonderful place she had ever been.
Just as it became clear that their destination was one particular table
with eight or nine seats and more than twice that number of people
gathered around it, two adjacent seats magically became free.
"John and Stephen have kept us seats! I thought they would." Tanya led
Carol, like a hunter with a trophy, to near the middle of the circle of
faces, and the introductions began. Carol kissed and hugged well over a
dozen people. Her count was "Five men - definite. Six women, I think, well
anyway three women definite, I think. And four trannies. Well three
definitely, and four could be women, but..."
This train of thought served only to confuse her more and the time flew as
she danced and drank and had shouting-right-into-the-ear conversations
with about half of the circle of obviously long term friends. She learned
and promptly forgot names, and had to strain to glean clues so she
wouldn't embarrass herself, by getting them wrong having already been told
them. She discovered that two of those she had thought women were actually
guys, and worse: ("Why is it worse?!" she asked herself, with no hope of a
cogent answer), one of those she had thought trannies, was a woman!
She danced with Sarah, a man, Sarah, a woman, and Sarah, another man. She
learned that Sarah the woman was NOT the one she had to watch out for as
she had guessed, but Sarah the man, the shorter one. Shorter? Even he was
about six foot in his heels, which were really nice peep-toed black satin,
she had noticed. She danced with John, and with Stephen and once with John
AND Stephen. And she danced with Tanya. She danced a lot with Tanya. When
she was dancing with Tanya she wanted the dance to go on forever. And when
she wasn't dancing with Tanya, no matter what was happening, she wished
she was at least WITH Tanya. It wasn't that she was nervous, or worried
about being read or anything. She was perfectly at home. She didn't feel
dressed-up, she didn't feel self conscious, conspicuous. She felt like
Carol, a young woman on a glorious, riotous Christmas Eve.
Of course she drank far too much. White wine, red wine, brandy, lager and
Jack Daniels were all consumed. Fortunately for her she only had one of
each, but her judgement - not to say her composure - was seriously
impaired.
Tanya remained sober, and so did Stephen and several others, although it
was daylight before Carol realised that.
As Carlo slowly came to full wakefulness, he realised one thing with a
startling clarity. He wasn't really Carlo any more. He became aware that
he was wearing one of his favourite little nighties, and a pair of full
panties, and that he had woken like this many times before. But this was
different. He knew - just KNEW - that he was leaving. Carol wasn't going
to leave - or even take a back seat - from now on. As the memories of the
previous evening and night began to crowd into his mind, it became Carol's

In the still silence of the flat, Carol began to recall details of her
very first outing. Recall them with flashes of sharp, well lit relief, and

She remembered how she had felt guilty, because she knew she was in love

She sighed with sudden relief. "Oh, yes, it WAS me!" she breathed.
She sat up in bed, and looking around, she knew that she had not slept
alone. The lay of the covers, the sheets.
"My God! Who did I sleep with last night? And what happened....?"
That was when the bedroom door opened.
