This was the most important day on Peter's Moore life. Although he still
didn't know it will be also his last. Peter was staying in a cheap hotel
room in Berlin together with the US federal agent Brett Curtis. In a few
hours they will leave to the Berlin Tegel airport where they would board
a plane to Amsterdam and from there another plane to the US. Peter loved
his life in Germany and initially he wasn't planning on returning to the
US, the place of his failed marriage to the beautiful but crazy Miranda
Browning.
Life is strange, and here he was, holding in his hand the plane ticket
to a new life. Tomorrow he would meet with a US attorney, who will
receive evidence of criminal activities by members of the Brauer- Bryson
conglomerate. Large part of its information was contained on portable
hard drive which now rested over its bed. Most important however would
be its testimony, being him witness of the conspiracy orchestrated by
Daniel H. Bryson. Peter will most likely go into the witness-protection
program, so despite going back home he wouldn't be able to visit his own
family. "It's ok" he thought, "at least I won't see that bitch of
Miranda". His trail of thoughts was however interrupted when someone
busted down the door. A tall east European guy came inside and rapidly
scanned the room, and then pointed the gun with silencer directly to
Peter's head. His name was Yuri Pokrovsky and was the last person who
Peter ever saw.
In the rush to complete his assignment, Yuri didn't notice the bathroom
door was closed. Agent Curtis rapidly came out and shoot down Yuri, who
barely had time to acknowledge his presence. "Fuck" was the only thing
that Brett could think. It's was the first time that he had killed
someone. Strangely he wasn't worried about it; maybe it was the
adrenaline in his blood. However now his priority was to escape and be
sure that Peters dead wasn't in vain. A serious reflection on the moral
consequences of its acts would have to come later.
Agent Curtis took with him the hard drive and put into his back pack.
His plan was to leave the hotel as soon as possible and go to the US
embassy. However the two partness of Yuri, Ludwik and Vladimir who had
been waiting downstairs, heard Agent Curtis weapon. Before Agent Curtis
could leave his room he was surprised by the two men. Although he fired
to them, this time failed. Agent Curtis never had the chance to fire a
second time.
The room 3004 was occupied by Sophie Dresdner a 25 year old from L?beck.
She was visiting some friends in Berlin and today was the first day of
her visit. Sophie was just unpacking when she heard all the commotion in
the next door. After the shooting, some guys started talking in what she
thought was Russian language. Scared she dialed 110 in her phone, hoping
for police to come soon.
A police car was actually just two streets away so their response was
very fast. Policemen Anja Seiler and Michael Kalb arrived when the two
criminal had just leaved the hotel. Ludwik and Vladimir could have
easily escaped, since the police didn't have yet a description of the
men and their priority was to investigate what had happened in the room.
Vladimir however panicked and use his weapon again the police. What
happened next was confusing, and the press got many contradictory
accounts of scared witnesses. The statement by Berlin Police indicated
that neither of the two policemen was injured. A man know by the name of
Vladimir Polyakov got injured in his leg during the shooting and was
captured. An unknown accomplice managed to escaped and police were
looking for his whereabouts
Somehow Berlin police managed to break down Vladimir, soon he was
telling them everything he knew about today's incident. A guy called
Andrzej Kalinowski, had hired them to kill an American staying in room
3003. They also were supposed to take a hard drive and some papers the
American had with him and give them to Andrzej; those were taken by his
partner Ludwik. He didn't know why they had to kill the American, and
honestly he didn't care. Nevertheless he was supposed to be alone and
unarmed so they were expecting and easy mission. The presence of an
armed partner had surprised him. We will never know if Vladimir actually
told everything he knew. The next morning he was killed in his cell by a
policeman called Stefan Eichmann, who then killed himself. The bodies of
Andrzej Kalinowski and Ludwik Tomaszewski were found later on a burned
car. With all potential witnesses killed, Berlin police were forced to
close the investigation. It didn't help that the US refused to explain
the involvement of a US agent in the incident.
US attorney Sharon Miles was an ambitious person, who tough she had
found a career breakthrough. Soon she will be famous. Disaster came when
his main witness was killed. After that other potential witnesses
retracted and beg her to never contact them again. Strangely, his boss
removed his support and asked her to stop look into the Brauer- Bryson
conglomerate. She refused; she knew it was something big. Accusations of
misconduct soon emerged, although never proved her career was destroyed.
Threat letters started arriving too. Sharon believed in justice, but she
didn't want to be a martyr of a task that everyday look more difficult
to achieve. She resigned.
William Moore also lived outside the US. He worked as graphical designer
in Barcelona and already with just 27 years old was directing a team of
designers. Unlike his brother Peter, Willian was planning in returning
to the US. The financial crisis had hit Spain hard and there was a
possibility of losing his job despite his skills. He was an excellent
designer, which also implies a larger salary. Many clients of the
advertisement company where he worked, where looking for cheaper
alternatives. If forced to compete by price rather than quality, the
company will for sure fire William. There were many good Spanish
designers who were unemployed and will accept any salary if having the
opportunity to work.
His company was actually part of Brauer- Bryson conglomerate. William
actually saw Mr Brysson a year ago, when he came to Barcelona on a visit
the company. Daniel Bryson was the kind of person who inspires respect
just with his presence. It was widely know how he started his company
with just 10000 dolars his parents lend him. Many years later he carried
a fusion of his company with that of the Brauer family, who had been his
friend since they knew in college. It was true that Bryson Corporation
had an initial capital of just 10000 dolars. But Daniel Bryson was born
rich. He went to a private school and later studied in Yale where he met
the Brauer brothers. Actually one of the reasons of his business initial
success was the connections his family had. The first day of operation
Bryson Corporation had an already established network of providers and
clients, something many new companies struggle to achieve. The press of
course usually fail to mention that and made emphasis on the young
entrepreneur who make a fortune with just 10 000 dollars.
Despite all Mr. Bryson qualities, there were interesting rumors about
him. The weirdest one was that he was into she-males. It will be just a
crazy rumor, if not by the fact that several different sources had told
him the same, one of them close to Mr. Bryson. William didn't care about
what Mr. Bryson did with his penis, as long as he didn't close or re-
structure the company where he worked.
William was still thinking about his career, when he received a phone
call. It was the Berlin Police, something had happened to his brother.
The month after Peter's funeral was also the most depressing moment on
William's life. He wondered why someone would kill his brother. He knew
organized crime was involved in Peter's dead, but didn't understand why.
Something was sure; William wanted revenge on whoever killed his
brother. Things were also strange, William was sure he was being
observed and sometimes being followed.
He was walking home when someone approached him
- My name is Sharon Miles and we have to talk. I know who killed your
brother
- What? Are you serious? -asked William
- Yes I am. He was a witness in a criminal case against the Brauer-
Bryson conglomerate. He was a liability to them - replied Sharon
- Them, who?
- Daniel and John Bryson, also Helena and Frank Brauer -responded
Sharon
- That's nonsense. Seriously, who are you? -asked William
- I was an attorney looking into financial crimes commited by the
Brauer- Bryson conglomerate. I tough it was just white-collar crimes. I
didn't know who big it was until it blow-up. I'm sorry, if I would have
know I could have protect better your brother
- Wow, you're serious - said William
What the woman who claimed to be an attorney did indeed sounded like
nonsense. The Bryson and Brauer families were respected members of
society. However William needed answer to his questions. So he decided
to trust her
- Could we discuss this in a more private place? Like my home - said
William
- Your home could be bugged. Let's meet instead in my hotel room -
replied Sharon
The evidence that Sharon showed to William was convincing enough. Now
William blood was boiling and all he could think was revenge. But there
was a question he still had.
- Why you didn't send this to the press? -asked William
- I actually did, I had a friend how was a reporter. I told him
everything. Next thing I know is that he died in a suspicious suicide.
His boss refused to publish the story, he told me he love his family too
much, he couldn't risk to talk to me anymore.
- This people are dangerous! We have to stop them - said a furious
William
- I know, but the conventional ways won't work. They are powerful. We
have to infiltrate them from the inside - said Sharon
- And then what?
- I was thinking we could leak some information to the Internet. But you
should know, although that would be bad for their PR, most likely they
won't go to jail. They could always say they expressed their worries to
an employee, who then proceed to kill your brother by his own
initiative. This people cover well his tracks - said Sharon
- But...
- I mean I would achieve my objective, to show that the Bryson and
Brauer families are not as good as people think. However I can't promise
justice to your bother. Now if you want revenge, that's a different
thing.
It took them a week but Sharon and William made a plan. It was crazy,
but it may work. William would become a she-male and get close to Mr.
Bryson. He will become Joanne Feldman.
