As a child I had been a huge fan of the J Geils Band video "Centrefold".
That was a long time ago. I thought it was one of the sexiest videos I
had ever seen.
Now I had my own band and I was the lead vocalist. The difference with
my band and the J Geils Band though was the other three members of my
band were women.
The band comprised of:
Sheila on drums, she was beautiful but tended to dress like most male
drummers, had long hair and really strong arm muscles and could beat most
men at arm wrestling as I had found out to my cost when I had had to pay
extra royalties to her. She had brown hair and was latino.
Wendy on keyboards, she had long curly hair that she tended to wear in
what she told me was called a fish tail plait and she was also a make-up
artist. When we did video shoots she would do all of the make-up. She
tended to like wearing a long white blouse which was never tucked in and
black trousers. She had black hair and looked European.
Lisa was our guitarist and she had long blonde hair and like Sheila also
tended to favour looking like her male counterparts in her dress style.
She was a graphics designer and tended to do all our art work.
Our band was a democracy and we always voted on any major decisions. I
was thrilled when not only did the band agree to play "Centrefold" but
agreed to do a video like the original. Lisa said though that there had
to be a bit of a twist on the original. I was really surprised then when
I persuaded the girls to dress up like the band in Robert Palmer's
"Addicted to love" video.
Sheila, Wendy and Lisa not only wearing make-up and with their hair
looking really pretty but also in skirts and stilettos! I had got myself
some black jeans and a red and black striped shirt like the singer in the
J Geils Band.
I had booked 9 dancers to join us from a company called "BAQ".
When we got to the studio I was amazed at the fact that we had an all
female camera crew who all looked like models. I was going to be
spending the day in the company of some beautiful women and nine of them
would only be wearing underwear for most of the day.
But then I noticed that instead of nine dancers in trainers, white slips
and black bras there were only eight. What happened to the other dancer?
Oh well, I'd find out later, maybe she was late.
Sheila came over to me.
"John, you said this should be a twist on the original video so we
thought as one of the band you should participate in this idea of it
having a twist on the original video. The girls agree with me that your
costume is the one costume that looks out of place."
"You need your hair tied back like the rest of us." If that was all she
wanted that was fine so I sat down as she worked on tying my hair so that
it looked just like the rest of the band and I found it so painful it
brought tears to my eyes.
"Is that ok now?" I asked but Wendy explained that I had messed up my
stage make-up when my hair was being done and I would need it touched up.
Before you ask why I was wearing make-up I should point out that all male
and female TV stars wear stage make-up although you never realize it when
you watch it.
So Wendy got quickly to work and I shut my eyes so as not to move around
or make her job any harder. I opened my eyes just in time to hear Wendy
giggle and to notice that the lip make-up she was using looked very
similar to the lipstick she was wearing.
"Ta-dah!" she said holding a mirror up.
"What the fuck?!" I said as I realised to my horror that my make-up and
hair made me look just like rest of the band and the girls in the Robert
Palmer video. In fact looking at the skilful job Wendy had done with the
eye shadow and lipstick I looked just like a woman from the neck up.
At least they had not got me wearing the black jumper, miniskirt, tights
and stilettos!
"Listen John," said the video director Jade, "you look ridiculous!"
"I agree, tell Wendy," I said.
"That's not what I meant John. Look around you. The dancers are ready
in their bras, slips and trainers and the band is ready in their outfits.
Who do you think is the odd one out?"
"Look, there's no way..."
Lisa called out: "Time out! John you know the score when we have a
disagreement in the band. We put it to the vote. Hands up those in
favour of John dressing like the rest of the band?"
All three girls voted against me. There was a way. I had just been
voted into drag.
I was told to go and shave my legs or they would wax them. I decided I
would make my own arrangements rather than face waxing. I understood it
was painful.
Lisa helped me get the skirt on and then told me to remove my boxers as
they looked ridiculous under the skirt. She then told me to put on a
pair of black panties and showed me how to put on my first pair of
tights. They were nearly black she told me.
Then Sheila said, "There is no way you are escaping a waxing John. Get
his top off girls!"
My top was ripped off from me by the three of them which meant I was
going to be stuck wearing whatever top they gave me.
I would rather forget what happened next. It was agony as my chest and
back hair was ripped off me. I felt really naked. Then I had false
breasts stuck on. Shelia played with them a bit and I joked that she
should stop fondling me. I didn't see these false breasts as part of my
body.
Then Lisa instructed me in how to attach a black bra in front of me and
then pull it round and get my arms through the straps. I could have
sworn there was a camera flash as I sat their waiting for the black
jumper feeling a little vulnerable as I cupped the breasts in my hand.
At least the jumper didn't look that feminine.
"Welcome to the video shoot Jo!" said Wendy.
How was I going to live this down?
