The Devil's Bride - Sophie Elizabeth
The day was finally here. Stood at the front of the church, watching my
soon to be wife walking towards me on her father's arm, with her three
bridesmaids behind her and she looked amazing. In an ivory, strapless,
princess cut wedding dress and her hair in delicate, cascading curls,
with a beautiful yet subtle tiara.
At one point we didn't think we'd get to this day. When I first
proposed, I was in a fifty thousand pounds a year job as a head
accountant in the firm I worked. We had our hearts set on the big,
white, church wedding, with a country manor for the reception. We were
so excited and then disaster struck.
"Sorry Paul, but the company is bankrupt, there is nothing I can do,
we're all down the road," my boss told me.
I was able to find another job, as a bookkeeper for a small firm, it
paid the bills but it was nowhere near the money I was used to
receiving.
So Natalie and I had to be clever, we were still going to have the
wedding of our dreams, we just had to think outside of the box.
To start with, me and my groomsmen had our suits made in and delivered
from Thailand. That saved a few hundred.
Natalie bought a second hand dress and the bridesmaid's dresses were
hired.
But the ultimate saving came from getting married during the week, not
only that but choosing to have our wedding on the 6th of June, 2006.
There seemed to be a lot of superstition and taboo about hiring a
church on 6/6/6 and we got it for next to nothing. Silly, I know, but
there we go.
Natalie arrived at the front of the church next to me, with her bouquet
of blue and white, saying that, everything was blue and white, it was
her favourite colour combination.
We went through the motions, the hymns, the "I do's" and the
pronouncing us husband and wife. That's when everything went wrong.
A sudden chill went through throughout the church, the candles went out
and everything went dark. Then a burst of flame appeared just behind
the vicar before forming into a human shape.
Stood before us was a being in a black suit with red ruche. But he
wasn't human. The red skin and the horns was enough to tell us that.
This was the devil himself, but what was he doing here? Natalie hid
behind me with her arms around my waist. I tried to stand tall and
brave, but I was shitting myself.
"Man, have I been waiting for this to happen, a moment of ultimate
sacrilege to give me some power in this plane," he said. Turning to me
and Natalie he said, "An atheist, getting married in a church, on the
6th day of the 6th month of the 6th year, even for a non believer, you
were really pushing it."
"But neither of us are atheist," Natalie stated as confidently as she
could.
"You may be a good Christian, but your loving husband there has not
been entirely truthful."
He was right of course. I knew from the start that Natalie and her
family were church going Christians. I didn't see the harm in just
going along with it. I had been baptised and everything, I just didn't
believe.
"Before you two get into a domestic over this, let get this show on the
road, I don't have much time here," the devil said as he clicked his
fingers.
As he did so, all of the flowers in the church, including the bouquets,
instantly changed from white roses with blue thistles to red and black
roses. A second click of his fingers and the bridesmaid's dresses
changed from blue, tea length, halter neck dresses with white detail
and white petticoats poking out from the skirt to black, strapless,
form fitting, floor length gowns with red details. Their hair became
released from the updos to fall in loose curls, framing their faces.
Finally, their makeup changed so that instead of subtle tones that
made them look sweet and innocent, they had blood red lips and dark,
smokey eyes to look sexy and seductive.
"Unfortunately for you," the devil said to Natalie. "You are a child of
God, so cannot directly take part anymore. But since you are SO close
to who will be the new bride, I don't see why we can't have a fourth
bridesmaid!"
Another click of his fingers and gone was my princess bride, Natalie
was now dressed exactly like her bridesmaids. She burst into tears as
her three best friends did their best to console her while looking
extremely distressed themselves.
Looking at me, the devil said, "Now you, being the key to all this, are
the one I need to marry. I'm not homophobic, but I'm just not into
guys, so you're going to have to undergo some minor changes." He
laughed as he clicked his fingers for a final time.
Everything was different. I had a curtain of dark brown hair covering
my left eye. I could feel a tightness on my head where I knew a tiara
now rested. Another tightness around my neck told me I was now wearing
a satin choker. The position of my feet told me I was wearing very high
heels, yet I was still standing a good 5 inches shorter than I was
before. My arms were covered by red, elbow length, fingerless gloves.
I looked down. I had breasts. Encased in the most elaborate gown I had
ever seen. Blood red satin, strapless, with a skirt that was at least 6
feet in diameter.
I looked behind me. My hair was pin straight and if I'd been naked it
would easily covered my arse. The train of the skirt must have been 12
feet long. I wanted to run away but between the dress and the heels, I
doubt it would have been possible. I couldn't bring myself to look at
Natalie.
"So here's how this is going to work," the devil started. "Vicar, you
will conduct this wedding ceremony, or I will burn you alive right now.
Don't worry, you can confess your cowardice to the almighty and you'll
still get into heaven." The vicar nodded his compliance.
"And you Paul, I can't really call you that anymore can I? You are now
Serena. Anyway, Serena, go through, the motions, say 'I do,' in all the
right places and once our vicar here pronounces us as man and wife, I
will immediately divorce you and change you back. Is that a deal?"
"YES," I almost screamed in my soft soprano that felt foreign to my
ears. "I'll do it."
So off we went, the devil did all of his "I do's", I said all of my "I
do's", the vicar was just about to pronounce us as husband and wife
when I had a vision.
I was in my home town. But it was on fire. I could hear the tortured
screams of the people, but I couldn't see any of them.
I looked down, I was still in my female form, in the same dress, but I
was different. I could feel that I had a prehensile tail underneath all
of the skirts. I had two small horns protruding from my head and I had
black claws instead of fingernails.
I was a monster, some kind of devil woman. Not only that but the satin
choker had changed to a steel collar. Connected to the collar was a
chain which was connected to the back of the chair I was sat on. No,
not a chair, a throne. A throne made of skulls.
This wasn't just a vision; this was the future if the devil got his
way. Somehow I knew that if the devil married a mortal, he would have
full access to the human plane to do as he wished. And I would not only
still be female; I would be some kind of demon and his prisoner.
"STOP!" I yelled. "Don't say it. I take it all back; I won't be your
wife! You won't get to rule our world!"
"You stupid bitch," he shouted back at me. "Well if I'm going to be
stuck in hell then I'm taking my bride with me!" and everything went
dark.
So here I am, in hell. It's just like my vision except it's not in my
hometown. Or any town. There's no houses, only rocks. I can still hear
screams of tortured souls, but thankfully, I'm not one of them.
He does keep me on a chain and in the same elaborate gown. I am slowly
changing into the same demon being that I saw in my vision. I think my
mind must be being altered as well; I was horrified by the sights and
sounds when I first arrived, but now I know that the souls here deserve
it. I almost enjoy watching them burn for eternity.
So here I am. Serena. Queen of the Underworld.
I think I'm going to like it here.
