Aurelia poured some tepid, aromatized water over her body, using a golden
cup. She enjoyed watching the water flowing over her perfect body under
candle light of the tepidarium. She had perky, perfectly formed breasts,
not so small and not so big, her belly was flat, with almost no sign of
extra fat, she had large hips, indication she would be a good mother when
the time came and, of course, she had smooth arms and legs, with almost
no sign of hairs, but this was her secret, she learned that from a Nubian
slave, who learned for Egyptians in her childhood: a treatment with wax
which was painful, but removed all her body hairs.
This obsession with a perfect body was no vanity, she was quite aware
that her face was less than perfect. Her nose had a protrusion in the
middle and reminded everyone of the beak of a vulture. Her eyes were too
small and too close together and her jaw was squared. She was, sure, the
daughter of a good patrician genus, which could root its origins to the
times of Roma's foundation, but she knew the only way to keep her husband
interested in her, was keeping that perfect body.
She compared herself patrician companions, which shared that afternoon in
the women's bath. Priscilla had deformed breasts and hideous stretch
marks in her belly, while Livia had, additionally, an ugly belt of fat
around her waist. Just after thinking that, she realized what she was
doing, she silently prayed to Jupiter, not to send the Furiae to punish
her for her hubris. Both women were already mothers and Livia had been
even three times, perhaps when she got pregnant herself, her body would
end up deformed like theirs. She would fight the best she could. That
Nubian slave told her that by spreading almond oil in her skin, she could
prevent the stretch marks and she decided not to eat too much when time
came, to avoid the fat.
She decided, as a sort of constriction act, to pay attention to what her
friends were talking about. They discussed the case of a fourth patrician
friend, who, apparently was cheating on her husband. In spite of being
descendant of a good patrician family, she despised the roman national
sport: gossiping. They were alone, women's baths were smaller than men's,
but they were also less crowded. Reason for that was the work load of an
average roman woman. Between the house chores, the constant pregnancies
and the caring for their children, roman women had only rarely time for
baths. The exception were the patrician girls like Aurelia or Priscilla,
or to a wife of a novus homus, like Livia, who could afford a legion of
clients or slaves to do the more mundane things. Consequence was that it
was easy to find some privacy.
Aurelia, in order to end the constant gossiping, decided to share
something she wanted to keep for herself, "I had a strange dream two
nights ago," she announced.
Her friends stopped their conversation, curiosity in their eyes, and then
Livia said, "Really, tell us about it, friend."
"In that dream I was living in a strange city, very large, larger than
Roma."
"It was really strange, Roma is the largest city in the world,"
interrupted Priscilla.
"Indeed, I know, but somehow, in that dream, I knew tat city was larger
than Roma and the at least two other were even larger," explained
Aurelia.
"People lived there in many storey building, some so high that they could
reach the skies."
"One constructor attempted to build a three storey building close to my
home," said Priscilla. "But it crumbled over its own weight," she
completed.
"I believe they used to reinforce the concrete with steel bars," said
Aurelia.
"People drove strange steel chariots, which required no horse or bull to
pull," continued Aurelia.
The two girl looked at her in disbelief due to this strange idea.
"They could make light at night just pushing something called a button on
the wall, and this involved no fire," continued Aurelia.
"Perhaps you dreamed of the future," meant Priscilla.
"Yes, the way things are developing now, you might have dreamed of some
time about 300 year in the future, Oneiros usually brings these gifts to
the mortals," agreed Livia.
Oneiros was the Greek name of god Morpheus, Aurelia always forgot Livia
had a Greek mother, then Aurelia continued, "The worse was that nothing
looked strange to me, it was like normal!"
So the girls kept talking about Aurelia's strange dream, which included a
magic box which contained small human like figures who sang, danced and
acted as if they were alive. She didn't remember the name people gave to
that box, but she invented one to describe it: home theater. Nobody
remembered the lady who was cheating on her husband.
Next time the three friend had time to chat with privacy was after the
cena, Aurelia organized for her husband's senator friends and their
wives. After dinner, most guests left for their homes, but Aurelia's
husband and the husbands of her friends went to a separate room for a
further round of heavy wine drinking.
Aurelia's husband was applying to the Praetor's office, a further step
towards the cursus honorum, the set of offices a honorable roman citizen
had to occupy in his political life. This required pampering their guests
Aurelia's husband was not of the kind who would beat the crap out of her
when he drank too much (like Pricilla's), he would rather pass out in
their bed, turn to the side of the wall and start snoring like a Pig
being slain the whole night.
She would, of course, prefer to sleep alone in one of the guest rooms.
She would never even think on cheating on her husband. She loved him, and
her sense of honor was too developed to risk doing such a thing. She was
also pretty sure her husband was not of the kind who resorted to
prostitutes or young boys in the military camps (the most sure a roman
woman could be in that society). However, since she belonged to her
husband, who could order her head chopped off for any suspicion, she
would not dare leaving their marital bed that night. It was much safer to
endure a bad sleep night.
Aurelia was thinking about the miserable night she would have ahead, when
Livia asked, "Did you have anymore weird dreams?"
"In the matter of fact, I did," answered Aurelia.
Aurelia looked visibly uncomfortable and was blushing heavily, finally
she completed, "In this dream I was male, and not female, and my name was
Michael"
Her friends looked amused, but said nothing, Aurelia continued, "I was
married, my wife's name was Maria, and I had two children, a boy named
Marcos and a girl, named Fulvia."
"The names of the children looked roman, but the others I cannot
recognize," said Livia.
Priscilla, however, was interested in other things, she asked, "And what
it was like? Did you have sex, I mean, with your wife?"
Aurelia was, by then violently blushing under that memory, but her
friend, who looked visibly interested, did not want to give her a break,
Priscilla asked, "And..."
"Well, it was different, good..."
"The sensation of having a penis was strange, but feeling it grow erect
under the sight of my naked wife was intense."
Then she realized what she was saying and quickly completed, "Don't get
me wrong, I still prefer making love as a woman, but I would not go so
far to say that a woman has 10 times more pleasure than the man, as
Tiresias supposedly alleged, it is simply different."
Then she decided to change the subject. "In my dream I was an historian"
"Like the ones we have?" asked Livia.
"Not quite, this one involved working in a strange machine which filled
endless sheets of a papyrus-like material called Paper, with writing,"
said Aurelia.
"I was expert in Ancient Roman History, in particular the History of the
Roman Republic, meaning our own time."
After she said that, a servant arrived, interrupting the dream's
description, telling that her friend's husbands were ready to go home.
The three friends met again three weeks later, at the Vestalia, the
festival in honor of goddess Vesta. This was the only occasion in the
year in which ordinary women (that is, other than vestals) could
sacrifice doves in honor of the goddess, which protected the families and
granted fertility to the women. After the ceremony they were alone at the
stairs outside the temple and Livia said, "A little bird told me that
this year the ceremony has a special meaning to you, Aurelia!'
Aurelia was always amazed with the ability of roman gossip to be update,
she had convinced herself only two days earlier, "Yes, I am already two
months delayed with my period and my nipples are larger and more
sensitive, I believe, and the physician agrees with me, that I am
pregnant," said Aurelia.
"Praised be the goddess, friend, have you already decided the name?"
asked Priscilla.
"If he is a boy, he will be called Gaius, like his father and his grad
father," answered Aurelia.
"And if she is a girl?" wanted to know Priscilla.
"I did not think about that yet," said Aurelia.
"Changing the subject, did you have any more of those weird dreams?"
asked Livia.
"I did, a week ago."
"In this dream I was visiting Roma with my family, I mean, with Michael's
family."
"The city was quite different, it had many of those many storey buildings
I saw in the first dream and the streets were filled with those steel
chariots, which produced noises like strident birds."
"We visited the forum and it was in a really bad shape, in ruins, but
there were parts and monuments, which do not exist today."
"We visited also other building which reminded me of our time, but are
not present here, I remembered in particular of a large stone arena,
called Coliseum, and a large temple called the Pantheon."
"There were also temples of an unknown religion, and many works of art in
styles I didn't recognized, they looked Greek, but it was different."
"We finished our visit in a famous square, called of the Trevi, in which
there was a fountain with marvelous statues."
"In the bottom of the lake formed by this fountain there were lots of
coins, I knew it was commonplace to believe that whoever tossed a coin in
that fountain, could have a wish granted."
"So I, I mean, Michael, tossed a coin and said, whispering, I wish I were
someone of importance in the old roman republic..."
At this point, Priscilla, with tears in her eyes and having a hard time
not to laugh, said, "That is preposterous!"
"I know, how could I, a simple patrician girl, be of some importance to
our republic?" answered Aurelia.
"The worse is that I think in my mind, I mean, Michael's mind, I wanted
to be a general or something he called an emperor..."
This time it was Priscilla, who interrupted, "Don't say this loud, this
looks suspiciously close to a King, and you know what romans think about
Kings."
"I have no intention to spread this story and I hope you don't do it
yourselves," said Aurelia.
"Sure," answered both girls simultaneously, with an innocent look in
their eyes.
"These dreams were surely sent to me by the gods, to mock at my own
insignificance," said Aurelia.
Then Aurelia completed, "After this last dream, I, thankfully, had no
other alike."
At this point they were already descending the stairs in the way to their
homes. Priscilla and Aurelia went in front and were discussing baby
clothes. Livia came behind, some five meters, and was thinking about the
dream Aurelia had told.
She was looking at the temple of Venus at the distance and said aloud,
"Gaius Julius Cesar, this is really a good patrician name."
The moment she said that, she felt a thrill in her spine, she thought
that maybe the winter would come earlier that year and hurried up to
catch her friends, she wanted to tell them about a marvelous mini toga,
she saw a baby wearing one of these days.
