" A Northern Tale" A story set in 1950's
As usual, I recognise that this may be a very niche subject.
Chapter 1:
Latimer was surprised to receive a phone call from Mr. Hawkins, although
he had been with the internationally celebrated Management Consultancy of
McIntyre for 3years after gaining his MBA from Manchester University, he
had not heard from the any of the partners since his interview grilling.
The call had requested, well not so much requested as demanded, his
attendance at a meeting with a new client currently being held in one of
the boardrooms. Latimer lost no time in making his way to the upper
floors where the big cheeses held court. He entered the den of Mr Hawkins
secretary and gatekeeper, Susan Doherty and said "I believe that Mr
Hawkins has asked for me, any idea what it's about, Susan?"
Susan looked up from her work at the slim, middle height, somewhat
"pretty" young man and coldly replied " I'm sure I have no idea and its
Miss Doherty to you. You had better make your way sharpish to Boardroom
3."
Thus rebuffed, Latimer rapidly left the fearsome secretary's lair and
therefore missed the sly smile of amusement that formed on Susan's face.
Knocking on the impressive, large oak door of Boardroom 3 Latimer was
gruffly bid to enter and found Mr Hawkins seated at the boardroom table
with a very attractive ash blonde lady who appeared to be in her early
30's.
"Ah yes" boomed Mr Hawkins "Latimer, I'd like you meet Mrs. Atkinson, she
has a project which requires your particular skills" This last was said
with a slight sneer which did not go unnoticed by either Mrs Atkinson or
Latimer. Mrs. Atkinson stood to shake hands with Latimer and he noticed
how tall she was, overtopping his 5ft 7inches by a good 4 inches, some of
which could be accounted for by her heels but only a little. He also
noted that his initial estimate of age was off, her face spoke of a few
more years and much more experience.
"Hello Mr Ridley, I'm Glynis Atkinson you may call me Glynis whilst we
are in private," said the elegant lady.
"Please call me Latimer, Mrs Atkinson," was the somewhat stilted reply
from the young.
Mr Hawkins barged in to the introductions. "Now, young Latimer, Mrs
Atkinson has some business issues she would like us to help her with and
as I said initially they need someone with Your particular, shall we say,
talents." Again the sneer.
Mrs. Atkinson interrupted at that point. "If you will permit me, Mr
Hawkins, I will endeavour to explain the situation. I am the majority
shareholder in Atkinsons' a clothing manufacturer based in Brunely,
Lancashire. Some of the minor shareholders, all members of the Atkinson
family, into which I married, are dissatisfied with my running of the
company. My late husband was the Managing Director of the firm until his
passing 4 years ago and control of the company was left to me. I had been
heavily engaged in the business and my husband had every confidence in my
abilities. The other shareholders take absolutely no active part in the
business being, in my view, mere parasites content to take their
dividends and contribute nothing to the engine of their wealth. It is my
intention therefore to sell the company and free myself from the burdens
of supporting them. My late husband's mother was my last tie to the
family and she died recently which has precipitated this conflict."
"Now in order to sell the company at its optimum value I need to further
improve the efficiency of the operation and this is where McIntyre comes
in. I need an experienced consultant to review the operation and gain
support from all parts of the workforce for improvements in efficiency
and as the workforce is 99% female, I need a woman consultant to gain
that support. Regrettably I understand from Mr Hawkins here that even
this progressive organisation is insufficiently enlightened to have women
consultants and this, Mr Ridley is where you come in."
At this point the direction of the discussion became apparent to Latimer
and he went pale.
Mrs. Atkinson continued, "I understand from Mr Hawkins, that at the last
Halloween party, a tradition, which I believe McIntyre have imported from
their United States origin, you were somewhat of a sensation in fancy
dress as Ingrid Bergman. I have seen photographs of the event which
confirm that view. I am also led to believe that many of the secretaries
had difficulty retaining the interest of their boyfriends once you made
your entrance. Mr. Hawkins vouches for your professional experience
despite your comparative youth. The assignment, therefore, which Mr
Hawkins has proposed you for, is to perform the required consultancy at
Atkinsons dressed as a convincing female for a minimum period of 3
months. To assure myself that you can perform this role I will be taking
you this evening to Harrods for an extensive beauty treatment and some
initial shopping after which we will dine at the Savoy. Is that clear
Latimer?"
Latimer gulped and glanced at Mr Hawkins whose sneer had become even more
pronounced, clearly his career was on the line here and he could ill
afford to antagonise either his superior or his potential client. He
mentally cursed the strange urges which had led him to abandon his native
caution at Halloween and give full reign to his deepest desires. He also
realised that Mr Hawkins had labelled him "queer" and would relish either
refusal or acceptance, refusal giving Hawkins the opportunity to sack him
and acceptance would humiliate him. He looked at Mrs. Atkinson and
thought he recognised a slight smile of sympathy and that decided him.
"Yes that will be fine Mrs Atkinson, what time shall we meet?"
"It's getting on for 4 o clock," replied Mrs. Atkinson. "Shall we say
4:30 in the lobby, that should give you time to sort out details with Mr
Hawkins and collect your materials. You will be staying at my hotel this
evening and then, all being satisfactory, we will travel up together to
Brunely by train tomorrow. You will also need to arrange to place your
accommodation here in abeyance for the initial 3 months."
Latimer nodded his acceptance of the arrangement and Mrs. Atkinson rose
to leave.
A thought struck Latimer. He asked, "What type of clothing do you
manufacture Mrs Atkinson?"
Mrs. Atkinson smilingly replied, "Raincoats, my dear Latimer, specifically
modern fashion versions of the traditional British mackintosh!"
