Rainy Day Woman.... Chapter 3

This is a work of fan fiction based upon John Entwhistle's novel "A
Northern Tale" A story set in the 1950's
As usual, I recognise that this may be a very niche subject.
Chapter 3:
With some trepidation, Latimer followed Glynis from his flat and entered
the waiting taxi. Glynis noted his anxiety and tried to allay his fears
saying, "Harrods have been apprised of the circumstances and because I am
a valued customer they have made a personal assistant available to us who
will smooth our path through your treatments and assist us with our
shopping."
Somewhat relieved, Latimer then asked, "Who is paying for this, given
that it is Harrods it will amount to a tidy penny I've no doubt."
"Don't worry about that," replied Glynis. "McIntyre will be paying
because they are anxious for the business and this was their solution to
the problem of having no female consultants." This response amused
Latimer as thought of Hawkins being forced to sign receipts for beauty
treatments and female apparel.
They soon arrived outside Harrods in Knightsbridge and as Glynis paid the
taxi driver, Latimer took a moment to study the outside of the luxury
store, an establishment he rarely visited being somewhat frugal of nature
thanks to his Black Country roots.
Glynis joined him and presented her arm for him to hold and probably to
ensure that he didn't flee.
They were met just inside the door by a pert looking young lady, smartly
dressed in a dark blue jacket over a cream blouse coupled with a matching
dark blue tailored skirt. She greeted them, "Hello Mrs A., it's good to
see you again and with such an unusual and exciting project." Glynis
introduced Latimer to the young lady. "Latimer this is Julie Braddock,
Julie meet Latimer Ridley our subject for this evening." Latimer shook
hands with Julie and jokingly pleaded "Hello Julie, I do hope that you
are going to be patient with me?" Julie laughed and putting on a faux
German accent replied, "Zis is not goink to hurt US at all, but for you
ze suffering is chust beginning." All three broke into laughter with
Latimer thinking that this girl would make it amusing at least.
Recovering from this unexpected humorous introduction, Glynis told Julie
to lead the way. Latimer's transformation was beginning. "The beauty
salon is on the top floor so we will take the lift," explained Julie.
Once in the lift, which they had to themselves, Julie began to outline
the program for the evening. "First we will give Mr Ridley here a facial
that will soften his skin and make removal of unsightly hair very much
easier at the same time we will remove other bodily hair." Latimer
blanched at this but had the presence of mind to ask Julie to call him
"Lat"." Julie thought for a moment or two and then enquired, "Lat, in
your new assignment for Mrs. A here, don't you think that a female name
would be more appropriate?" Glynis concurred.
"Yes I had been going to discuss that with Lat myself." Reluctantly
Latimer replied, "I suppose you are both right, do you have any
suggestions? as it isn't something I've really had time to consider."
Julie immediately pounced, "What do you think of the name Laura? It's my
best friends name and I really like it." Glynis deliberated for a moment
and smiled. "Yes I like that." They both looked to Latimer who acquiesced
after a testing the name out mentally, "Laura Ridley, yes, I think I can
cope with that." Glynis gave her intriguing half smile and promised, "We
will celebrate your Christening tonight at dinner."
The lift doors opened and Latimer was assailed by the scent of various
perfumes and other, not quite so nice, smells. Julie quickly introduced
Latimer to an attractive, exquisitely made-up, middle aged lady. "Laura,
I'd like to introduce you to Miss Antrim who will be taking care of your
physical transformation."
Miss Antrim wasted no time. "Hello Laura, I've been fully briefed on this
project and I admire you for undertaking this on behalf of your
organisation. Most men would refuse point blank to try this regardless of
their commitment to their work. I will endeavour to make this as painless
as possible for you regardless of what this little minx, Julie, here may
have said." Julie blushed at this point but could not quite stifle a
laugh.
Latimer and Glynis both chuckled.
Latimer then, encouraged by Miss Antrim's words, requested " Let us once
more unto the breach then Miss Antrim, do your worst or rather in this
case your best as I think you may have a difficult task." Miss Antrim
grinned. "Oh no, I don't think so I have been made privy to your Ingrid
Bergman photograph and I think that I have excellent material to work
with. Would you please go to that changing room over there and strip down
to your underwear? You will find a gown hanging on the door that will
protect your modesty while I get to work."
Nervously Latimer did as he was instructed and put on the pink silky cape
which reached to his mid-thigh. Latimer left the changing room feeling
rather vulnerable in this covering, particularly with his arms
encumbered. This feeling of vulnerability and the caress of the silk on
his body excited him in some curious fashion and he endeavoured to hide
his feelings. Glynis had been watching Latimer closely, noting his exit
from the changing room and the clearly well practised concealment of his
feelings. Miss Antrim also recognised the signs from her occasional work
for gentleman with certain "special" requirements.
Latimer was then made to stand in a tiled area which looked as though it
converted to a shower and the cape was removed. Miss Antrim began to
massage pleasantly smelling creams into his face carefully avoiding his
eyebrows, eyes and lips. She then began to rub the same creams onto his
legs all the way up to his Y fronts, thinking to herself, "They will have
to go." Latimer's arms, chest and back received the same treatment. Miss
Antrim then left Latimer to "marinate" for a few minutes whilst she
prepared her hairdressing equipment. Returning she told Latimer to draw
the shower curtain, remove his underpants and shower. Latimer asked
where he should put his Y fronts and Miss Antrim hid her grin whilst she
thought "In the bin" but adopting her professional demeanour said "Please
give them and I will take care of them for you.
Modestly drawing the shower curtain around him, Latimer handed the
offending underpants to her and having placed the shower curtain
carefully within the confines of the tiled area began to shower. He was
surprised to note that his facial and body hair appeared to wash off
under the shower jet and was glad to see that the grille covering the
drain was sufficiently coarse that the softened hair didn't stick.
After a few minutes soaking in the shower Latimer called out that he was
ready and a soft towel was passed to him. Briskly rubbing himself down he
felt the change in the feel of his skin, how soft and sensitive it had
become a feeling that surpassed his previous private efforts at shaving
his body. Wrapping the towel around him at waist height he drew back the
curtain asked for his pants. Miss Antrim reproved him, "Young ladies do
not expose their chest area please wrap the towel higher to conceal it."
Amused that Miss Antrim was helping him in his new role, Latimer
complied. Miss Antrim nodded approvingly and handed him some pants but
these were not the ones which Latimer had handed over, these were ladies
knickers, pink satin replete with lace and frills. Again Latimer
recognised the need to get in role and drew them up his newly sensitised
legs. The feeling was electric and Latimer was very hard pressed to
maintain his sang-froid. Miss Antrim then handed Latimer a matching bra
gesturing him to put it on. Latimer noted that the bra was lightly padded
but would be sufficient to add some shape to his narrow chest. The
entourage of females watched with some surprise at the dextrous manner in
which Latimer fitted the bra to his chest, his familiarity with the
process becoming obvious.
"Ok Latimer let's get the gown on you again and start on your hair," said
Miss Antrim. "Just walk over to the chair and get comfy," she instructed.
Latimer complied, again feeling a delicious vulnerability from the
confining cape. "Fortunately," stated Miss Antrim, "your hair is not too
short so that with some subtle cutting we can transform your look into a
modern, efficient, business girl with a style that will not require much
care beyond regular brushing. Here at Harrods Salon we believe that well
cut hair does not require a high level of maintenance. Latimer felt a
degree of relief at that, he was concerned that he would be forced to
wear a wig and feared that would be very uncomfortable in a hot factory
environment and the low maintenance promised would be very beneficial to
his work. Latimer leaned back and enjoyed the efforts of Miss Antrim's
efficient cutting and snipping.
In less than 15 minutes it was complete and Latimer was able to view the
results, a slightly pixie-ish look but strongly modified towards the
business-like. Glynis and Julie were entranced by his appearance and said
so. Miss Antrim then busied herself with the accoutrements of make-up,
explaining to Latimer, "Again I am going to make this a very light and
easy to apply make-up. We can afford to go light because it will be some
time before your facial hair reappears." Thinking to herself actually,
never! In minutes the make-over was complete, eyebrows plucked and
pencilled, foundation, powder and blusher applied, and a light shade of
lipstick added. The look, combined with Latimer's light blonde hair in
its pretty new cut was gorgeous and Latimer was enthralled. He was also
quick to note that it seemed to be a similar look to that of Glynis,
younger yes, but clearly familial, so much so that they could be sisters
or dare he think without being rude to either, mother and daughter. Miss
Antrim seemed pleased with the reception of her efforts and explained, "I
had a good canvas to work upon, very much akin to that of you, Glynis. I
have prepared a package of the materials I used and will write some clear
instructions for their use whilst you complete your shopping here."
At this point Julie took charge. "If you would return to the changing
room Laura, and change into the overall you will find in there, we can
then begin shopping for some outfits to wear during your assignment."
Latimer complied, removing the pink cape, placing it in the basket he saw
in the corner of the changing room. He then quickly donned the tailored
pink, satiny overall with a Harrods insignia on the breast pocket that he
had noted hanging on a clothes hook. As he exited the changing room,
Glynis took his arm again and they began following Julie toward the lift.
Latimer stopped briefly to thank Miss Antrim profusely for her work and
to her surprise gave her a kiss on the cheek. Miss Antrim watched the
trio leave and thought to herself, "I wonder if we shall ever see Latimer
again or if Laura is now a fixture."
At the lift, Julie explained, "We are going to do a whirlwind shop. We
already have Laura's measurements so options have already been set aside
in the various departments and the sequence will be from base layer
outward. First stop, Lingerie."
