Spiculus shook his head in exhaustion as he hiked further up the

Father Chronos, but glory. The ring had been his life since he had
defeated his mentor in the arts of battle with the shaft of a broken
spear.
That's what drove him here. On the advice of a woman of the court, the
old gladiator had come to Marble Springs. It was said that the mountain
baths were blessed by the gods to rejuvenate tired flesh and weary
bones.
"But first you must make it there, old fool." Spiculus said wryly as he
huffed. Fortunately, he was almost there, and the entrance beckoned
invitingly to the tired soul. Expert stoneworkers had carved a
threshold that rivaled any of the great works of the Empire, and the
columns at the entrance held statues to the gods most aligned with
pleasure and relaxation.
A beautiful and yet stately woman was waiting for the gladiator as he
entered. She had a face that made it hard to guess her age beyond
etherial, though her hair was white and a timeless twinkle was behind
her eyes. "Welcome, milord. We've been expecting you." she said,
giving a small bow as she did so. She gestured for him to follow, which
he did.
Spiculus already felt years younger as he kept pace with the proprieter.
Whatever the aethers that wafted from the pools were, they already had
made every step to this place worth it. He couldn't imagine how he'd
feel once he'd had an opportunity to partake of the waters themselves.
His host turned her head and smiled back at him as they walked past
communal baths, all filled with resting citizens. "As a vassal of our
Emperor, you are entitled to the finest care available. Our private
baths." She produced a key from the folds of her robe and with a
practiced gesture unlocked the last of eight steel doors at the end of
the room. Behind it, was a changing room. Escorting Spiculus inside,
the woman continued. "Unburden yourself here, and then walk through
that portal. A servant will be waiting for you." Then, Spiculus was
left alone.
With ritualistic care, the old gladiator removed his sandals, his
vestments, and finally his loincloth. A mirror, set unobtrusively in
the corner of the room, allowed him to inspect himself. For a man of
forty five, he was in tremendous shape, but years in the arena had left
their toll in scars and stiffness. His hair was thinning, and worry
lines had taken refuge on his forehead like castle fortifications. All
in all, the expected result of the life he lived. Spiculus gave one
final glance, and then walked on.
An eastern woman awaited him in the next room, a lute in her hand and
the slightest of clothes drapping over her perfect form. Spiculus
admired her beauty for a moment, and then took a step into the perfectly
clear waters of the bath.
Utter bliss filled Spiculus as he sunk to his neck in the waters. Years
of ache, feelings that the gladiator was so used to that he had
forgotten what it felt to be without them, evaporated into oblivion. It
was like releasing a breath that he didn't even know he had been
holding.
For what seemed like an eternity, Spiculus soaked in the warmth, the
soothing sounds of the servant's enchanting tune washing over him.
Then, so subtly that not even the casual observer could notice it,
something began to change.
It started with the scars. The eldest scars faded first, and then newer
ones, and then the most recent. Soon, Spiculus's skin was that of a
baby, soft and fresh.
Spiculus had always been clean shaven, but even the lightest of hairs
that had grown from his long journey disentegrated, as did the virulent
carpet at his chest. To the rhythm of the music, body hair lightened
and thinned, then disappeared.
The lute still played, but the woman no longer touched the strings as it
hung in the air. She rose from her seat, and with a gesture dropped her
clothing to her feet. Seductively, she sauntered into the pool.
"Twould truly be a waste, to not take advantage of our full service."
she said in a breathy contalto. Spiculus could only take her in with
his eyes, giving a hum of approval as her fingers moved sensuously down
his muscled form.
Those muscles didn't fade, but the frame that they were on began to
shift. As the servant stradled Spiculus with her luscious thighs, he
didn't notice his own thighs, which began to thicken to match. A hand
slid on his chest, surreptitiously checking the progress of breasts even

They made love.
It was short, and Spiculus burned out quick as the changes accelerated

Epilogue

The Emperor fell out of favor, and in a citizen's rebellion was ousted
from power. So hated was he, that stories told that he played the
strings as it fell, though in truth he fought the blaze along with those
loyal to him.
In an attempt to die an honorable death, the Emperor sought far and wide
for his most venerated of gladiators, but it seemed as if Spiculus had
vanished from the face of the earth. In despair, it is said that he
took his own life.
Spicia of Lesbos headed east, a pregnant bard named Fa Rey in tow. The
pair eventually settled together, and raised their daughter. Spicia was
famed in story as a sentinal of her hamlet, the greatest of warriors.
Her companion enshrined her deeds in song and prose.
Eventually, the location of the Springs faded from memory. Some people
even wondered if they had ever been there at all. And they hadn't.
They seemed to be on the other side of the world
