Things were running smoothly, the FJ's and Nexies were mixing in and
getting along with everyone else. And our later than usual Spring Break
was just a few days away.
I decided to drop in on Miss Tandy's fifth grade class just to observe.
Then I remembered this was also Skitter Hearts classroom. I'd slipped
Tandy a note at lunch so she wouldn't be surprised when I slipped into
the back of the room.
Sapphire lay curled up under Skitters desk in plain sight. And I realized
I'd arrived at the beginning of a test. Together Tandy and I wandered the
room, pausing from time to time to help a student better understand a
question or to figure out an answer.
Of course, I'd been drawn to Skitter out of curiosity, but before I
reached her desk she lay her pencil in the tray then closed her book,
setting the finished test on top. Slowly other students were doing the
same as they finished the test. Then Skitter held up her hand.
"You have a question honey?" I asked.
"Coo needs some help," she said as Tandy reached us.
"Go ahead Sweetheart," offered Miss Tandy as she picked up her test.
"Thank you, Ma'am," she stood and performed a polite curtsey then hurried
over to help Coo Sage with the test.
Then I noticed the other two who had finished were doing the same thing,
helping other students.
"I hope you don't think I'm doing something wrong by letting them help
each other," stated Miss Tandy. "But since I started allowing it, the
number who need extra help has dropped. And they aren't just being given
the answers."
"I noticed that," I told her. Then I realized I couldn't see Sapphire
anymore.
Now Miss Tandy grinned. "She's gone outside before the mad rush begins."
We stepped quickly to the side as the last of the students completed
their test.
"Alright, you've earned an early recess, Enjoy," said Miss Tandy. They
hurried to file past her desk and leave their tests in an orderly stack.
"Skitter is always the first to finish, and always the first to offer to
help her classmates," she explained. "I'm really going to miss her next
year."
Mistress Fillandra appeared in the room. "Is there a problem with Skitter
or Sapphire?" she asked.
"No, I was just visiting the class rooms at random," I said.
"Oh, Sapphire let Digger know that you were here. She was afraid she
might be in trouble."
"Skitter? Heavens no, that girl is very bright," stated Miss Tandy.
"No I meant Sapphire. She threatened a young Goth earlier that has been
helping his companion to cheat on tests," explained Fillandra. "But I
think it was more that she explained why it was wrong to do so, than a
threat."
"Is that why she won't be back next year? Because you think Sapphire will
cause problems in class?" asked Miss Tandy.
"Actually, no it is not. She will be enrolled in the Demonian Girls
Academy, since I will become Headmistress of the Demonian Kitten Academy
next fall," stated Fillandra.
"I hadn't heard," I told her. "Congratulations."
We sat down in the classroom and began to visit.
"Tyrea is nervous, but that's understandable. She's not had quite as
long, as I have in training to become a Headmistress. But Momma is
retiring at the end of the year and she has been chosen to take the lead
since I will be over the Demonian Kitten Academy," then she realized this
was the first I was hearing about Mistress Gwendolyn retiring.
"Well regardless, I hope that Tyrea will remember that I am here if she
ever needs anything." After a minute, I asked, "Does her retirement have
anything to do with her recent marriage or with Chantilly becoming a
Seeker?"
"I would be lying to you if I said no, but in truth, Momma has dedicated
her whole life since she graduated with caring for Kittens in one way or
another," she said. "I think that it's a combination of the two combined
with an opportune timing."
"Is there anything I can do to help Tyrea or one of the other
Headmistresses?" I asked. "I've heard that there are a few new ones
opening."
"Oh," she grinned. "The only new one is the Avian/Antaran Kitten Academy.
The other three just got elevated to Intergalactic Status. Of course,
it's a pretty big deal for Mophra, since they used to be exclusively
Water Breathers."
Then she changed the subject on me. "How are the schools on Pretense II
and Tall Tree doing?"
"They're getting there, of course they're getting lots of support from
all the other Quadrants," I told her as we headed towards the Admin
building.
"Mommy?" we stopped for Skitter.
"It's alright, Sapphire was just worried that she might be in trouble.
But it was just Miss Malissa visiting the class."
"Oh, you mean like Grammy and Tyrea?"
"Yes Sweetheart." She hugged her and kissed her cheek.
"Please give this one to Kashandra," Skitter gave her a hug and kiss.
"I will, I promise," said Fillandra.
We talked a bit more then she needed to get back to care for her new
infant and tend to things at the Demonian Academy.
I had a lot more to think about now, especially with Mistress Gwendolyn
preparing to retire. Of course, I knew there was no way I could be
Headmistress for even half as long, as she'd been, Humans didn't live
that long. But it did give pause for thought, what would I do when my own
time to retire came along.
As if she'd been reading my mind, Miss Clara arrived for a visit.
She looked different today, I wasn't quite sure what it was, but she
seemed more at ease.
"Things are going nicely," she said. "My mother is finally adjusting to
things since Chantilly found our father's Seeker Ring, and since
Gwendolyn has gotten married. But I know that is not what has been on
your mind this afternoon."
"I was wondering how you knew it was time to retire," I finally admitted.
"I mean when to begin preparing the next Headmistress to take over."
"Oh my, that is something you have plenty of time to think about, Later."
She answered me.
"Oh, I wasn't thinking about any time soon," I assured her. "I was just
thinking about it since Gwendolyn is going to retire at the end of the
year."
"Yes, but she has been teaching kittens for over two hundred years," she
observed. "Much like myself and David. But of course, we never had our
own Academies until we moved to earth."
Then she surprised me. "I already know which of your girls will follow
you though. I saw it in a dream when I chose you. She even had a daughter
of her own that was named after you."
Sherry, in my dreams it was always Sherry warning little Malissa to be
careful or not to get in grandma's way. I smiled as I thought about those
dreams, Sherry had always been wearing a School uniform even as an adult.
Of course, here lately whenever I had that same dream, there was more
detail to the neighborhood. It looked more like our neighborhood here.
Now taking hold of my hand Miss Clara said, "Don't push her, let her grow
into it on her own."
"I will, this is a job that you need to be ready to undertake." After a
minute, I asked, "How did you know that I was ready? I didn't even have a
teaching degree, or any experience."
"Some things you just know. Others you need a little nudge from the
people around you. But to be honest, I wasn't completely sure until after
I met with your Grandma Night Bird. I thought I might have to hang on for
another year or two. But she told me that you were ready, you just needed
a little nudge in the right direction."
We were suddenly interrupted by a flurry of activity.
"Nona?" I asked.
"All the Royal Guardians are storming the classrooms," she answered.
The phone began to ring and Nona answered it. A moment later she hung up
looking pale, then turned to us. "There was a possible attempt on Queen
Keeli's life early this morning during her visit to Aviara. They aren't
sure, but also Sabina, Moll, Quill and Queen Vivian were with her and
it's possible one of them might have been the actual target." I suddenly
realized that it was actually morning still on Aviara.
I picked up the phone, "I need to speak to Headmistress Tyrea, and
Mistress Chichi, please tell her it is urgent."
"Malissa, Chichi said you needed to speak with me on an urgent matter?"
"Are the Royal kittens safe? There was an assassination attempt this
morning," I began.
"Chichi, Red Tide," she said.
"Red Tide?" I asked.
"Yes, it is the code to secure the grounds. We are now in administrative
lock down. Thank you for the call, I am watching the news now," she said.
"Are your ladies safe, you have enough Guardians?"
I knew the Kitten Academy had Guardians. But you never saw more than
three or four at a time. Of course, most of those at the Demonian Academy
were Bonded with a Gambichow.
"Yes," I answered her. "I am calling Donnie for a conference call."
"I just heard," he answered his phone anticipating the reason. "Do either
of you need Cadets to help provide security?"
"No, but thank you Sir," answered Tyrea.
"No Love," I answered.
"Then I guess we each hold what we have until we know more about what is
happening. But please, if either of you needs anything, anything at all,
do not hesitate to call."
We both promised that we would.
"Miss Clara, I need to walk the grounds to assure the students they are
safe here," I told her.
As we walked we also visited classrooms, talking with students, teachers
and faculty. They hadn't all been apprised of what was happening yet.
We were on the south Quad between buildings when Mildred caught up to us.
"Ma'am, is my Momma really alright?" she asked.
I looked at Layla first, who nodded her head. "Yes, your Momma is safe."
"Sorry, ever since I abdicated, well I don't get the regular briefings on
what is happening at home," she apologized. "Are the Kittens, I mean my
sisters safe?"
"I'm sure that they are. But of course, you can always call if you are
worried?" I reminded her.
Was she getting jealous of her mother's new Kitten Daughters? She had
been an only child up until just recently. Before we could move on she
had her phone up to her ear, "Mommy, are you alright? Is everyone else
ok?"
We moved on to let her have some privacy.
"See you handled that just right. She just needed a little nudge," said
Miss Clara.
After Miss Clara left I was getting ready to join my girls for dinner at
the dining hall.
"Miss Malissa," it was Curwen. "Miss Rachel has visitors at the gate."
"Please send them on through, I'll meet them in the parking lot of her
dorm," I told him.
"Malissa, we called the house but Sophie said they had moved out to their
own house," began her mother. "And that she had a big surprise for
everyone." Cali was coming along nicely as she heeled at her side.
The last class of the day had just ended and the students were heading
for the Dorms before going to dinner.
"Grammy!" squealed Ginger as she rushed to us from the nearby day care.
"Rachel," I got her attention. "Go ahead and start your spring break
early. Your grades can handle it," I told her.
"You'll come for the barbecue tonight, right?" asked Rachel.
"We'll be there, I promise. Now go show your mother and brother where
your house is. We'll be along as soon as I can gather up the rest.
Rachel Simmons and Joanna Curry hit it off like long lost friends as they
sat on the patio with their Grandchildren, and Grandma Night Bird. I
could see that they felt grandmotherly towards Nell as well.
Then the Lightfeather's arrived and Fox and her Sister Wives added to the
mix as more people began to arrive.
It was just after dark when I felt the tension set in like someone just
flipped a switch. Myumi Tsing had just arrived, and she was heading
straight for Rachel.
"Myumi?" I questioned her.
Smiling she said, "I think it is good that I brought this news now
instead of waiting for her next appointment."
"W, what news?" asked Rachel.
"Ginger is developing just like Avians. Her growth is beginning to level
out and I think her mental development has slowed a bit. She'll still be
a genius. But we don't need to worry about her continuing to grow old
before her time."
This was news to celebrate, and that they did. There were droids running
around making sure everyone was enjoying themselves and catering to the
guests. I realized that maybe someone had hired the FJ's since they did a
lot of Catering for the Brightfeather's Diner.
It was later after the big crowd had left that I met Miss Dipper, Rachel
and May, I incorrectly guessed, had hired her as a live-in Nanny/Maid to
help around the house. Of course, the first thing I noticed, now that I
knew how to spot it, was that Dipper, was a Pleasure Droid.
"Rachel?"
"Momma, please. This is our house, our rules," reminded Rachel. "Besides,
she is self-aware and wishes to change her previous occupation that she
had no say in."
"You're right, and she deserves this chance to expand her horizons." I
said.
"Besides, we have May and Jason to play with," I stood there only a
little bit stunned.
"She takes care of the house while we're in school," May added.
I was about to ask how they could afford her when Grandma asked, "How do
you like my Housekeeper, I hired her to help me but I share her with the
kids."
"Oh, ohhh," I chuckled.
"Besides, she knows what I like." "Dipper, come along honey. I feel the
need for a body massage coming on."
Sophie was giggling hysterically. "You should see your face."
"Sophie, Grandma hired a concubine," I said.
Now serious, she stopped laughing. "No, she was hired as Grandma's Live-
in maid. And she is very efficient at it. What they share together is
between them and no one else."
It took me a few seconds to realize that Sophie was right, I had no right
to judge Grandma's actions. And I certainly didn't want Sophie pulling
her Spirit Woman Wisdom on me, especially since she was carrying her
staff tonight.
So, Ginger would still grow fairly fast, but by the time she was the size
of a five year old, probably at the end of the next year, she would slow
down to a normal rate just like the Avians.
I wondered about Nell now, I had only my knowledge of actual wolves and
what I'd read about Lycans. I knew they grew fairly quick as well but I
didn't think it was a huge rapid leap like Avians.
I was still thinking about everything the next day when Glorri stopped by
with Prissy.
"I have to be away for a while, I was hoping it would be alright if
Prissy stays with you when she is not with Shasstine?"
"Certainly," I said. "But how long do you expect to be gone? Does
Stephanie know so she can rework the schedule?"
"She knows." Then she looked like she'd just made a hard decision. "Until
this Assassin is caught, I have to stay close to Tarriana. And I think
Natani is sending Dorri and their youngest here as well."
"I didn't know that they were potential targets," I blurted out.
"It is just a precaution, we have no idea who the real target is. But the
queens have taken to having weekly tea parties at random and were
actually getting more done that way than using ambassadors and
messengers." I knew it was more information than she was supposed to
share, which showed how much I was trusted.
All the Queens, had had their public appearances cancelled until further
notice. Only those events that they could not avoid were still being
held, but the security had been tightened. And of course, they still
planned to have their weekly Tea gathering at one's palace at random.
Plus, Maddie Grey had pulled Michelle out of school and recruited Midge
Orchid to help her try to locate the assassin.
I knew this was serious if they were calling in Maddie. I also knew that
it was a golden opportunity for Midge, to work with Grey Associates.
While being counted as an Intergalactic Police Transport, Diamond Back
was still independent like Shimmer. They were kind of like the Internal
Affairs branch, investigating the corruption that was cropping up within
some of the remotely located Planetary Police forces.
I reminded myself to call Tank Electronics to be sure that Midge had a
School Laptop. That also got me to thinking about Shorty and the other
Tanks in school. Bounder had already established herself with a
reputation for tracking things along the Intergalactic Freeway when she
had helped to discover several of the lost Transports.
One thing for sure, security was going to be much tighter for a long
while. I hoped that they were successful in catching the Assassin and
whoever had hired them before anything happened.
Of course, I had confidence in Maddie Grey. And if she had called in
Midge she must believe the Girl had some skill or talent that she needed
to help catch whoever was behind the plot.
Now I was trying to rethink if we should have our school outings to
Loving Beach for those who couldn't go home or elsewhere during Spring
Break. I hadn't even thought that Shasstine and Natira might not be going
home again this year.
Prissy was happy to stay and visit with Sherry and Tiffany up in their
rooms. I knew that Maleeza was with Randi, something about a meeting that
was taking place at IMA with the other Tracker Scouts they'd been with
during the summer. Tizzy was at home, and Nor Vay was helping Ta Ray to
set up a Seeker Training expedition for Kitten/Seeker Chantilly Heart.
I was caught totally off guard when black Lamborghini Diablo pulled into
the driveway. There were two unknown vehicles out on the street that
realized were Guardians, when I opened the front door.
"Dorri, Nina, please come in, come in," I was busy hugging them wondering
why hadn't gotten any heads up that they were almost here. But of course,
I understood they didn't want to chance anyone knowing her destination
ahead of time. And then I saw Kito, as he was carried in the arms of
Ashlee, his Nanny.
Dotty and DD were there instantly as was Becka and Corra to greet Nina.
"I really don't see why Natani is taking this so seriously, she is the
one who would be in danger not myself, Nina or Kito," she said.
We sat and visited a while and I was wondering about Kito's size. For
being three months old he was already as big as Ginger. Then I realized
that Nina, while being as big as a five-year-old, was only two. Before I
had a chance to ask though we were interrupted by Maleeza, Natira and
Shasstine coming through the closet.
"Momma, Nina!" Natira hurried to greet her birth mother.
"Momma if you are here, who is?"
"Nikko is there with Scarlet. Both the Claw and Talon are there with
Wolves Bane," assured Dorri.
"Momma Glorri, is with Daddy to help watch out for my Momma too," put in
Shasstine trying to break the tension.
"Oh, you're both here," gushed Tiffany at breakfast as she, Erika, Danny
and Randi joined the group finally. Then I noticed they had Persimmon
with them.
We sat visiting as everyone jumped in doing their chores, setting the
table and helping Sophie with setting the food on the table. We were
still waiting for Donnie and Greg when Maleeza asked Shastine and Natira,
"Have you seen the latest updates to Demonian Star?"
She had her tablet out and suddenly they were in the family room with the
images up on the big screen.
I'd seen the Demonian Prison Transports before, but never the inside. And
this one only looked like one from the front. Then as the view changed I
saw it was half again longer than even Talon or Claw, twice the length of
the other Transports. There were two separate Power trains showing, one
up front, the other halfway back. This thing was huge even for an IGP
Transport, and it swiveled in the middle.
"You remember you said you wished we could have two?" Randi asked Natira.
When she nodded her head, he said, "Watch this."
I watched as it separated in the middle becoming two separate Transports.
"Should you be showing these plans to everyone?" asked Donnie from the
doorway and I shot him a hurt look.
"It's ok Sir, the Knights Council actually presented it to the Queens
concerned," Randi looked at his PDA. "Oh Shit, Maleeza Alert the other
Scouts. There was just another attempt on Terrellia."
They clicked on the news to show the smoking top of a building. A wall of
guardians ringing both the Queen's patio and the top of the other
building. The covered remains and a telescopic rifle were temporarily in
view before the camera shot moved to take in the upper patio at the
Terrellian Palace.
Clearly no one knew for sure what was happening. But before we had a
chance to speculate both Shasstine and Dorri received calls to assure
them everyone was safe.
I saw something as the looks passed between Shasstine, Randi and Maleeza.
Then they made eye contact with Natira and she too nodded her head. They
knew something, but what?
"Nikko, tell Shastarr that is Malcom Kesh," I heard Natira say into her
phone. "We need to get the Knights Council to investigate all of his
contacts since he was Disavowed of his Knighthood." "No remember his
tattoo on his right hand?" "Yes, the Trollshire." She hung up.
"Who is Malcom Kesh?" asked Donnie.
"He was the only Un-blooded Knight of Terrellia. But he was stripped of
his Knighthood at the beginning of this year. He was trying to insinuate
that Terrence was inducted just to procure the," Shasstine stopped.
"What is it?" asked Maleeza.
"The Knights Council was supposed to present Demonian Star to those
Queens gathered for the morning tea," stated Natira. "The Tank Council
finally approved to donate the power trains for her."
"That," Shasstine pointed out an older Knight standing next to Tarriana
and Natani on the view screen, "Is my Great Aunt, Nyolah Demure, as well
a Former Grand Knight of Terrellia."
"The oldest living Knight of Terrellia," added Randi.
I'd been wondering about the Trollshire tattoo they mentioned then I
remembered the crest engraved into the blades of their Vershang. It was a
Knight astride a Terrellian Trollshire with his Vershang raise in the
charge position. That had been tattooed on the hand of the assassin on
the rooftop.
Of course, I knew that none of the other Knights I had met had such a
visible tattoo that I had seen. I decided to ask and find out.
"Maleeza, don't all of you have one of those?" I asked.
"No Momma. We don't need to advertise who we are, our Vershang sets us
apart from everyone else," she answered.
Then Dorri got my attention.
"Miss Malissa, please do not let this interrupt the Spring Break field
trip," she said.
"You mean the trip to Omega Seven to ride the Intergalactic Roller
Coaster?" asked Sophie.
"Yes, all the fees and everything have already been made. Think of all
the disappointment, besides it will help take their minds off what is
happening."
I didn't want to admit that until Dorri mentioned it, I had forgotten
about it in the wake of all the political turmoil.
Sophie, had set it up with myself, Donnie and Mistress Gwendolyn to give
those whose parents couldn't afford to bring them home for the two weeks.
She had worked everything out by making a large group deal for the theme
park tickets, and for the transportation and accommodations while we were
there. The average ticket price for a child was thirty credits, teens up
to nineteen was forty credits, and adults was seventy-five credits per
day. Then you had the cost of lodging as well as meals and it was nearly
a hundred Credits a day per person.
Sophie had helped them set up a pass system for families, and larger
groups. They even had annual passes that people could buy so they could
drop in any time they passed through.
Sure, the coaster was the big attraction, but they had other rides and
things for everyone to enjoy. It had turned into a rather huge theme park
even bigger than Disney and Six Flags combined. They had things from
every universe. If we cancelled, we were still out the cost of
transportation.
I picked up the phone. "Mistress Tyrea?" I waited until she was on the
phone, "Yes, I was calling to see if you were still on for the Field Trip
tomorrow."
"Oh," she chuckled. "I was planning to go, it will keep the kittens
distracted. Are the Cadets still going?" she asked.
"Yes, I believe so," I answered looking at Donnie for confirmation.
"Yes, we are still going," he said. "But I have a Meeting at TIGA first
and will have to meet you there."
Since it was a School field trip, we were taking Eagle and Night Flyer
with us. May and Rose were driving the busses/trucks, for my school.
Danny and Longreach for IMA and Mona Heart and Angela were transporting
the Kittens.
Of course, that phone call changed the topics for the rest of the day,
and I saw that Dorri was relieved. I thought it was just about the
Assassination attempts.
"Malissa, can I ask you something?" began Dorri. At my nod, she
continued. "Jesenia Voris, called last week to ask if it really was
included in the cost of tuition for this field trip."
"Yes, it is," answered Sophie before I could.
"Actually, the cost is twenty credits more than the Field trip budget for
each student," I told her. "But the school is covering the cost."
"You mean that you three, are covering it," she realized out loud.
"Please Dorri, no one needs to know that," I said.
"Viola, please donate twenty thousand credits to the recreation accounts
of each of the schools on Iridani." "Yes, and let the other Education
councilors know, thank you." She hung up with a grin, "Now the cost is
covered by the Academy's funding."
We stood ensuring that everyone's parental consent was registered as they
boarded the busses. Then we met up with the Diner as we headed for the
big portal together.
Things were going smoothly, everyone was on their best behavior. As we
were preparing to shoot the portal on Omega Seven, I got a call from
Headmistress Paulina.
"Malissa, I was so happy to see that our girls are getting a chance to
explore the Roller Coaster together," she began.
"Oh, are you taking your spring break too?" I asked.
"Yes, and Nivea from Orion is going to have her young Ladies there too,"
she told me.

Our three Academies combined with the two other girl's academies seemed
to be having such a wonderful time together. The entire Roller Coaster
ride took twenty-five terrifying yet thrilling minutes. And I simply had
to ride it at least three times myself.
And then I saw Maleeza and Randi having a hushed conversation with Shorty
Orchid. But they stopped every time I got close, but not before I heard
the words Double Star, Tank Council and 'It's got a green light'.
Could they be talking about the new Transports? Did this have anything to
do with why Donnie wasn't here? He'd called right after we arrived to say
he had to go to another meeting, but not where.
"Malissa, stop worrying," said Sophie as we were getting ready to leave
at the end of the week and he still hadn't arrived. Gretchen didn't know
where he was either.
As we began loading up the students, Sophie got a message on her phone.
Our Latinum Express was showing a GC 5000 transaction on his card from
the 'Wandering Tiger Inn' on Kelvin Three. I was looking over her
shoulder and saw that it was a payment for two separate rooms.
"Sophie," I got her attention.
"Malissa, trust me. This isn't what it looks like, he is not having an
affair," she said with certainty.
"What? You think that's where my mind was going?" I almost laughed, and
then, that's where my thoughts went after she brought it up.
"No, it is something bigger. But it isn't bad," she said.
"Then why won't he tell us about it?" I demanded.
"Because he can't, and this is something that effects more than just us.
It is bigger than anything we've ever been involved with before," she
said.
"He told you," I accused.
"No, and I don't know what it is. But I know and trust that if we need to
know he will tell us." She was right, I knew she was. I could also see
how much her own curiosity was eating her up.
"Maleeza, would you please ride with me? There's enough room for Gorge in
the back," I told her. I was planning to grill her about what they had
been discussing with Shorty. Sophie was watching Nova and Tami. And
Butterfly would recover the Bitch when we caught up to them on the
freeway.
My phone began to ring as we started to leave the parking lot.
"Yes?" I answered as part of the windshield became a transparent view
screen.
"Miss Malissa, this is Nita Severs of the Intergalactic Bank. We have a
young lady here who needs a ride to Iridani. Is there any way that you
could give her a lift?" she asked.
"Yes, yes, I'll be there in few minutes," I answered her.
"Thank you."
