The Birth of an Angel
The River, Part 2
By kyorii pilau
Please read my first story The River before reading this.
This story starts only minutes after the last one ended.
As Susan (Joy and Alice's eldest daughter) and the Stevenson family's
driver are packing up following a farewell picnic to the place that Joy
and her then girlfriend to be, had first encountered each other. Whilst
sitting at almost the exact spot by the river where Joy (who was still a
young man at that time called John) had met his future wife. Joy had
somehow sensed that Alice was in danger. Unfortunately Joy herself is
currently in very poor health after being diagnosed with Cancer, this
however is not going to stop Joy from finding and rescuing her wife from
wherever she now was.
The Birth of an Angel
The River Series, Part 2
Chapter 1 The drive home.
Susan my eldest Daughter helped our long-suffering driver pack the
picnic table, seats and windbreak back into the car for our trip home, I
sat almost helplessly in the back of our car.
I was very agitated as I could not get any signal on my mobile phone and
I needed to make many calls and check on my wife Alice, more worryingly
I was also trying to come to terms with what could only be described as
a waking dream or premonition that I had just experienced whilst sitting
by the river and was praying that it was just my pain medication messing
with my mind.
I unclipped my handbag and took out my pack of cigarettes and was just
about to retrieve one when I stopped myself.
"Maybe in a while." I heard myself saying.
After about half an hour as we drove south on the A697 I was becoming
increasingly agitated and all I could think of was having my next
cigarette, I quickly gave in to my cravings and asked the driver to pull
over, this he did at the next lay-by, I slowly got out of the car,
opened my handbag and retrieved my pack of cigarettes, I quickly took
one out of the packet and placed it between my lips, as I lit the end of
the cigarette my cheeks hollowed and I took a massive drag and inhaled,
I quickly felt relief as my lungs filled with thick white smoke and the
nicotine was absorbed into my bloodstream, I slowly exhaled it was at
this point I started to feel both the guilt and sadness of my current
situation.
As I stood by the side of our car cigarette in hand I realised that I
could not just stop smoking, not any more, not like I had done a few
years earlier, 'what had I done to myself' I thought, because I had been
so locked up in my own self-pity over my medical condition I had turned
myself into a fully-fledged addict, smoking was now no longer a social
habit for me I now needed to smoke just to feel normal, It was then that
I started to weep uncontrollably.
Susan Quickly noticed my distress and got out from her side of the car
and came over to me.
"Mum what's the matter?" she asked me with concern.
Through my tears, I told her. "I tried, Susan I managed half an hour,
half a bloody hour, that's all I could manage, then I had to have a
cigarette." To my surprise, she smiled and gently hugged my emaciated
withered and bony body.
"Sometimes for such a clever mummy you can be really dumb."
I sniffed and asked: "What do you mean Susan?"
"You don't need to go cold turkey Mum, not now we can get you nicotine
gum or patches to help you cut down your intake of cigarettes, I think
that this time Mum you are going to need help with quitting, May I help
you?"
I looked down at my clever young daughter and smiled through my tears.
"Susan, if you will help me with my willpower I promise you I will try
my hardest to quit?" She smiled and said,
"Of course I will, silly."
As we both got back into our car Susan asked our driver. "Can you stop
off at a chemist shop on the way home please, we need to get some items
for my mum."
Our driver just nodded as he started the engine and very soon we had
parked the car in one of the large municipal car parks of a small
bustling market town called Morpeth, Susan and I popped into one of the
local chemist shops near the market place and after quite a long chat
with the pharmacist we left the shop with a large paper bag containing
nicotine gum, and nicotine patches of various strengths and also a
pamphlet on how to give up smoking, Susan opened one of the many packs
and placed a clear patch on an exposed part of my right arm.
"There you go, hopefully that will help to take the edge off your
cravings, if you feel the need for another cigarette, try some gum as
well mum."
***
Susan and I sat in the Market Square, taking the afternoon sunshine for
a while, whilst I used my mobile phone. We had finally come into service
and I'd managed to contact our London office, they had been given
confirmation that Alice did arrive in New York, and she had been driven
to her hotel in the city, but the hotel was now claiming that they had
no record of her booking in, also our New York subsidiary was being
somewhat defensive about whether they had actually met with Alice at the
airport and the reception staff were evading giving any direct answers.
I immediately instructed our London office to send a trusted
investigator to covertly try and locate Alice's whereabouts, I couldn't
however put my dread into words, I just seemed to know that Alice was in
serious trouble and my current helpless situation just made me feel
worse.
***
Soon after Susan and I were once again travelling down towards North
Yorkshire and the home, that I now affectionately called Stevenson
Towers, I only had two more cigarettes the whole trip.
Later that afternoon we pulled off the B road that ran adjacent to the
grounds of our home and onto the long and winding drive of our estate, a
few minutes later Susan and I were home.
Chapter 2 Stevenson Towers.
As we entered the big house Dot immediately greeted us and asked if we
would like a snack, I agreed to some milk and a sandwich, Susan asked
for soup and crisps! after we had eaten I apologised to Susan.
"I'm really sorry but I have to have another cigarette Susan."
surprisingly she just said.
"Don't worry mum, just try and increase the gaps between your
cigarettes, it's been over an hour since your last one, honestly mum
you'll be down to less than a packet in no time."
I hoped that she was right as I was already missing my cigarettes and I
had only just started to give up. I left Susan in the dining room and
made my way out of the house via the kitchen and sat on one of the small
chairs that had been placed by the side door.
I lit my cigarette, and inhaled and as I was exhaling my mobile started
to ring, it was not a number I recognised but as I had been warned to
expect a call I reached over and picked up the phone and answered it.
"Hello is that Mrs Stevenson, Mrs Joy Stevenson?" asked the voice "This
is Clive Andrews, I'm a private investigator."
"Ah hello Mr Andrews This Is Joy Stevenson. I take it that our head
office has briefed you on your job?"
"Yes, I have to locate Alice Stevenson, if possible and then report back
to you."
"Yes Mr Andrews, please, and I cannot stress this enough, please don't
contact anyone but me or Matt Stevenson with any information you have,
from this moment on."
Mr Andrews simply replied. "I fully understand Mrs Stevenson. I'm at
Heathrow now, I board for New York in less than an hour, I'll contact
you or Mr Stevenson if and when I find anything out."
"Thank you Mr Andrews, oh and please be careful."
I hung up the phone, stubbed out my half-smoked cigarette, got up from
the chair I was sitting on and slowly made my way back into the house
and up the stairs to our room.
As I entered our room, I felt a deep sense of relief as I slowly walked
over to our bed, kicked off my heels and lay down on my side of the
comfortable double bed that I normally shared with my wife Alice. Even
though Alice was not here I could still smell her scent on the pillow
and sheets, I really needed a hug now but there was no one here to hug
me, I felt so lost and alone so quietly I started to weep into the
pillow.
After a while and a short nap, I decided that I should probably clean
myself up and make myself look a little more presentable, I slowly got
out of bed, it seemed to me that I ached absolutely everywhere, I didn't
know if that was because of my many little growing tumours or if it was
as a remnant of what I now thought to be a most barbaric and inhuman
treatment, Chemotherapy.
I undressed myself taking off my skirt and half-slip then my blouse and
bra, I carefully pulled down my tights and removed my panties, I walked
through to my dressing room and sat at my dresser and started to remove
my thick make-up with a cotton pad soaked in makeup remover, slowly a
bland pale and gaunt looking face was revealed, I just stared at my
reflection in the mirror and looked at myself with sadness, I then
removed my hated wig and placed it on its keeper, I slowly got up and
moved over to the full length mirror and examined myself.
My body that only four and a half months ago was curvy, youthful and
pretty was now barely more than a skeleton loosely covered with pale
skin, I could see my hipbones jutting out, my ribcage was exposed and
my poor breasts now looked like two loose deflated bags of flesh hanging
from my chest, my complexion was very pale, I had large bags of loose
flesh everywhere and I could also see some of the many small tumours
that were slowly killing me just below the surface of my skin.
I then looked at my head and where once there had been a full head of
long flowing beautiful dark hair now there were just a few thin wiry
wisps of hair jutting out from a bald dome.
But what affected me the most as I silently examined myself was my face
and hands, my hands looked like an old lady's I looked at my long bony
nicotine stained fingers, my broken nails and chipped polish, my face
was gaunt my eyes were red from crying I had bags under my eyes, my
teeth were badly stained from my smoking habit, I now looked like an old
lady.
I also really needed a cigarette, I slipped on my silk gown and grabbed
a packet of cigarettes and lighter from the small coffee table next to
our sofa and headed towards the balcony.
I got as far as the balcony door when I realised what I was doing, I
stopped in my tracks and shouted
"NO." To myself, I then threw down my pack and lighter and walked back
through to the bedroom and my handbag, I opened it and took out my open
pack of nicotine gum and popped one of the small pieces of gum out of
its foil sealed blister and placed it in my mouth, after chewing the
mint flavoured miracle for a few seconds the cravings started to
subside.
I decided to have a shower to try and make myself feel a little better.
As I showered I shaved myself completely, this also included my head.
As I entered our changing room following my shower, with my bald head
exposed and my body wrapped in a large soft bath towel I was a little
surprised to see my old Teddy Bear 'Basil' sitting on my bed, there was
a little note attached to his chest, I read it. "I thought you might
need an old friend to hug when you were feeling down." it was signed
'S'.
For the first time in a long while, I actually smiled to myself at my
Daughters sweet gesture.
I decided to trim and file my broken nails, I also removed my worn and
chipped nail polish and left my nails bare. As I was going to have a
very busy day tomorrow, I put on a simple nightshirt, took my pain
pills, placed a new patch on my arm and decided to go to bed. One final
thing before I fell asleep, I did something that I had been neglecting
since my diagnosis of cancer and dilated my vagina with my favourite
vibrator.
I fell asleep soon afterwards whilst hugging my teddy bear 'Basil' and
thinking of my beautiful wife Alice.
Chapter 3 Resonance.
I awoke quite early to my now almost constant pain. I reached over to my
bedside table grabbed my cigarettes. I lit one and inhaled deeply,
feeling the nicotine being absorbed deep within me, sating my addiction.
It was only after a few more inhales that I actually realised what I was
doing, I sighed as I slowly exhaled through my nostrils and stubbed out
the half-smoked cigarette, I reached over and quickly popped a piece of
nicotine gum into my mouth instead.
I dressed casually in jeans and a tee shirt, I put on a pair of 3"
heels, these were lower than I normally wore, I only applied a little
make-up this morning, just enough so that I didn't look like a ghost and
scare the staff.
Just before I left for breakfast I replaced the nicotine patch on my arm
once more and took my pain pills.
(I took less pain medication than I would normally take in the mornings
as it sometimes left me quite woolly headed).
As I reached the dining room I realised I wasn't wearing my wig, 'too
late now' I thought to myself as I entered, Dot didn't even appear to
notice my baldness as I entered.
"Good morning Joy, I've prepared a selection of food for you, please try
and eat something." She said hopefully.
I really was not hungry at all, but I did manage to force down some dry
toast and one grilled sausage.
Susan appeared in the dining room shortly afterwards.
"Morning mummy." She cheerfully said as she plonked herself down in a
most unladylike manner opposite me.
"What are you doing today mum and can I help?" asked Susan as she tucked
into her cereal.
"I'm planning on doing a little research this morning Susan, I vaguely
remember reading an article in a magazine once about some chap who
claimed that he could kill cancer cells using electricity or magnetism
or something, I think I'll first try by looking through some of my old
magazines."
Susan gave me a cheeky smile then said.
"I'll help too mum, but I'll be using this modern thing, it's called the
Internet."
"Very funny, I know what the Internet is, it was me that had our fibre
connection installed." Susan just smiled again.
I left the dining room shortly afterwards and headed through to the
library.
***
Around lunchtime just as I was starting to give up searching, Susan
appeared.
"Everyday Practical Electronics April 2001." she said triumphantly.
I looked back through my 2001 issues and indeed there was a pull-out
supplement with that issue, I read the supplement carefully several
times and then said to Susan.
"I think we should give this a go, this chap Rife seemed to be onto
something and I think, with a little bit of tinkering, I could get it to
work much better."
Susan looked hopefully at me.
"So do you think you could cure yourself then mum?"
I thought about it for a second then said. "I'm not sure Susan; but
anything is better than nothing, I have to try something and it's not
like it'll kill me is it?"
Susan looked sadly at me.
"Susan, could you go and get me a sandwich from Mrs B please, oh and a
wine glass then bring them down to my basement workshop, once you've had
your lunch that is as I've had an idea."
About half an hour later Susan came down into my little workshop with an
empty wine glass and a sandwich, I was just popping yet another nicotine
gum into my mouth.
"You're just in time Susan." I said. "If you would just like to put the
wine glass on the tray over there in front of the speaker for me
please."
I gave her a pair of plastic safety goggles and a pair of ear defenders.
"Before you put them on Susan let me just explain what I'm trying to do.
If I lick my finger and then run it around the top of the wine glass it
makes a note like so."
Susan nodded as she heard the ringing tone from the glass.
"Okay then, if you look over here at the trace on my scope as I do it
you can see the frequency that the glass is vibrating at, in this case
three thousand one hundred and fifty times a second, or 3150 Hz." Susan
looked slightly bemused.
"That's the frequency that the glass is vibrating at. Now that frequency
is called its resonant frequency."
"But mum, how would this kill cancer?" she asked.
"I'm so glad you asked that, now if I were to feed a signal back to the
glass at its resonant frequency, the glass would then start to vibrate
at that frequency, but if I then increase the volume or the 'Amplitude'
of that signal what do you think will happen then Susan?"
She pondered this for a while: "I'm not sure mum; I hope that it would
break the glass."
I looked at her a little mischievously. "Shall we try it and see then?"
Susan nodded to me and then put her ear defenders and goggles on.
I set the frequency generator at 3150 Hz and turned on the amplifier. A
tone was emitted from the loudspeaker placed in front of the glass, I
slowly turned up the volume until after a few seconds, the glass
shattered. I then turned off the amplifier so as not to irritate the
rest of the household.
"Wow! Wow Mum that was awesome, is that how you're going to try and kill
your cancer then?"
I smiled at her enthusiasm. "Yes, that is the principle of how I hope to
do it; but cancer cells are tiny so they will require a much higher
frequency to make them resonate if indeed they can resonate, so I am
going to need a supply of my own cancer cells to work with though; but
if you will excuse me for a just moment I think I may have over eaten a
little." I dashed out of my workshop to the nearest toilet and threw up
violently.
***
As soon as I had recovered and washed, I went outside and had a
cigarette 'I needed it and I deserved it' I thought to myself. It was my
fifth of the day (usually I was starting my second pack by now).
Once I had finished my cigarette, I went into Matt's study and made
several phone calls. The most important of the calls was to Stevenson
Biotech. I called their number and almost immediately got the reception
desk.
"Hello Stevenson Biotech, how may I direct your call?"
"Ah good afternoon, could I speak to your R&D department please?" There
was a short pause and then.
"Who should I say is calling?"
"Joy Stevenson, I have some questions and I would like an expert to give
me some answers please." there was another pause and in the background I
could hear talking and muttering, then the receptionist simply said
"Putting you through to our Research department now madam."
The phone was answered by a very pleasant gentleman called Allen, he
said he was head researcher. I asked him several questions, fortunately
he knew who I was and offered to send his assistant over to Stevenson
Towers to advise me, she would be arriving late afternoon, I thanked him
and hung up the phone. I then went into the library and did several web
searches on the effects of resonance I found out that Nikola Tesla had
actually made an entire building shake by accident once using the
properties of resonance during one of his experiments, I also read
further about the work of Royal Raymond Rife but sorting out the facts
from the fiction was a rather tiresome business and after making lots of
notes I turned off the computer.
By this time, I was really quite exhausted and in a great deal of pain
so I decided to retire to our room for a nap, I left instructions to be
woken when Allen's research assistant arrived.
Chapter 4 Joy Versus Cancer (Round One).
I was gently woken from my sleep by Susan.
"Mum your person has arrived." she said quietly whilst stroking my bald
head.
I was slightly disorientated, felt dizzy, my skin crawled and I was
shaking, Susan looked sadly at me.
"I think you may need a cigarette Mum, and a patch top up."
I felt really guilty lighting up in front of my daughter, but the relief
was very fast in coming and after smoking only half of the cigarette I
stubbed it out, and popped some gum in my mouth.
"I suppose I'll probably have to wean myself off the patches and gum at
some point Susan."
Susan just smiled and passed me my shoes.
We made our way downstairs and waiting in the hallway was a woman
probably in her late twenties she had two suitcases by her side, I
introduced myself.
"Hello, I'm Joy Stevenson, I'm really pleased to meet you and this is my
eldest daughter Susan."
She seemed a little shocked at my appearance.
"Oh, I'm sorry I didn't put my wig on today I hope you don't mind
because it itches like hell when I wear it."
"I was staring wasn't I, I'm sorry that was so rude of me" she
stuttered, "My name is Ruby, I have been sent by Mr Cartwright to render
any assistance to you that I can."
I smiled at her and guided her into the library, as we sat down Dot
appeared with tea and cakes.
"Tuck in." I said to the still nervous Ruby.
"I'll come straight to the point Ruby, Firstly, what I need to know is
can you grow Cancer cells outside of the human body, specifically my
Cancer cells?" Ruby looked at me for a second.
"Can I ask you why you would want to do that Mrs Stevenson?"
I looked at her directly in the eyes and said.
"Because I need to find a non-invasive way of destroying the little
bastards, and I need to do it quickly and I need to be alive at the end
of it."
She smiled at me and explained. "Yes, from what Mr Cartwright said I
thought that was what you were up to, you do realise that it's highly
unlikely that you would succeed don't you?"
I smiled at her and asked
"So can you? Oh, and I insist you call me Joy."
Ruby answered
"Yes, it is relatively easy to produce cancer cells, that's the main
problem with the little buggers all they want to do is reproduce and
infect, but yes, I can supply you with an unlimited amount, there's just
one problem." I knew it there was always a problem.
"Okay then what do I need?"
"That's easy." she smiled "All I need Is a small sample of one of your
tumours, I can't take it myself as I'm not a medical doctor." I first
thought of my oncologist (or doctor, poke and hope, as I had been
unkindly calling him) but decided I would give Dr Mike a call instead.
"Okay Ruby, when can you start?" I was expecting Ruby to say tomorrow or
next week but what I wasn't expecting her to say was.
"How about right now, my equipment should be arriving on your property
any minute."
I then said to Ruby.
"Great then I'll go and make a quick call and see if my Doctor can come
over." I left the library and entered Matt's office, I sat at his desk
and picked up one of his phones and dialled Dr Mike on his private
number, after a few rings he answered.
"Hello?"
"Hello Dr Mike, it's Joy Stevenson." there was a pause then.
"Oh, hello Joy, how are you?" even though I was in rather a lot of pain
I just couldn't resist having a joke, so I answered.
"Dying at the moment Doctor, but I need your help for a project, I need
you to remove a portion of one of my tumours for me please, I believe
you call it a biopsy."
Dr Mike sounded a little confused when he asked.
"I don't understand Joy why would you want me to remove a portion of a
tumour? you have too many to remove it wouldn't make any difference."
"Yes, I know Doctor Mike, but I need it for a research project, that
Stevenson Biotech is working on."
He pondered for a second then said. "Okay Joy when do you require me?"
"Any time this afternoon Dr Mike if that is okay with you."
"I'll be there as soon as I've finished my rounds Joy." I thanked him
and hung up.
As I was walking back into the library I met Susan, she seemed to be
rather excited about something.
"Mum you have just got to see this it's amazing." she said as she
grabbed my hand and guided me over to one of the small windows near the
front door, what I could see out of the window was truly amazing, a very
large truck had been parked on the gravel car park at the front of our
house and the trailer of the truck actually seemed to be disassembling
itself, Ruby appeared behind us.
"It's based on the mobile labs used by the centre for disease control or
CDC, once it is fully assembled and the generator is connected up I can
start work on our little project, I also have the high-powered
microscope and the CCTV attachment that you asked for, it will be taken
to your workshop by one of my technicians shortly." I thanked Ruby, she
just smiled and said.
"If you can get that sample to me today I'll start growing cells for you
to try and kill."
I arranged with the housekeeper for Ruby and her technicians to stay in
the guest wing, and went back into Matt's office, I made another call to
my office for some equipment to help with my experiments, this would be
delivered tomorrow morning.
By this time, I was really quite exhausted once more so I decided to
have a quick nap on one of the reclining chairs in the library.
I was woken by both Susan and Dr Mike later that afternoon.
"Hello Joy sorry to wake you." Said Dr mike, it took me a few seconds to
regain my senses.
"Uh Hello doctor, err I must have nodded off, where would you like me?"
"Here will be just fine Joy, I can see a small tumour on your arm, just
under the skin so I'll use that one if you don't mind." I agreed, he
prepared the area and cleaned my arm, then very quickly performed what I
believe to be called a needle biopsy, the removed material was passed
over to Ruby who had been patiently waiting, she immediately left with
her little piece of tumour safely inside a sample container, Doctor mike
then cleaned my arm up and put a plaster on the skin covering the point
of incision and then he asked.
"How are you coping at the moment Joy do you need me to review your pain
medication or anything?"
"I'm coping doctor but only just, can I ask you a favour please?" he
looked slightly awkward then said.
"If I can Joy I will."
"Can you put me back on my hormones please, I don't think being off them
is going to suddenly cure me, do you?"
Doctor Mike answered my request by immediately writing me a prescription
for my beloved hormones, I thanked him and just as he was packing his
bag to leave he said.
"I hope whatever it is that you are doing is worth it Joy, I'll be back
in a few days to check up on you and review your pain medication."
The doctor let himself out and I nursed my sore arm.
That evening I dressed for bed took my pain killers, replaced my
nicotine patch and restarted my hormones (our driver had kindly cashed
in my prescription for me). The very last thing I did before I fell
asleep was to send an e-mail to Clive Andrews, the private investigator
asking for a progress report, I slowly nodded off hugging 'Basil' my old
teddy bear to my chest as I didn't have an Alice to hug.
Chapter 5 The prototype.
As I awoke the next day I was a little disoriented, It took me some time
to realise that I was still alone, I suppose I had hoped that Alice
would be there to give me a hug and a cuddle when I woke up. I turned to
my old teddy and once again hugged him instead, I dressed casually once
more and after taking my pain pills and replacing my nicotine patch I
left for breakfast, this morning I met Ruby who was already in the
dining room tucking into one of Dot's giant breakfasts, on noticing my
arrival Dot quickly came through from the kitchen and delivered me my
breakfast and a cup of tea, the tea tasted a little strange, Ruby could
see my face twisting, she smiled as she spoke.
"I'm sorry Joy I should have warned you, I heard from Mrs Burton your
cook that you were having trouble keeping food down, so I suggested to
her that adding a little Ginger may help." the taste was actually not
that bad so I carried on drinking the ginger infusion, ginger with
cereal was strange though, I just hoped that it would help.
At around nine a delivery van from my little part of the Stevenson
empire arrived, the equipment I had requested the previous day was taken
directly down to my basement workshop, just as he was leaving one of the
delivery drivers approached me and spoke.
"Mrs Stevenson, could I speak with you please."
I turned to him and said: "Yes of course you can, what can I help you
with?"
"One of the R&D lads collared me before I left the depot this morning
and gave me this for you, he said you might be needing them." he passed
me a small crumpled white paper packet, I thanked him and he left with
his colleague.
I stood there in the entrance hall looking at the small paper packet
sitting in my hand, tears were slowly forming in my eyes.
"Mum, are you okay?" I heard from a concerned sounding Susan who had
noticed me as she was coming down the staircase from her rooms.
"Yes princess, I'm okay, I have just had a really nice surprise that's
all."
Susan looked confused.
"Look." I said as I held up the packet, this didn't really help her
confusion.
"Can't you see Susan, it's the best get well soon present I've ever
had." I opened the packet and when she saw the contents, she understood
fully and said.
"Is that jelly babies? a whole packet, oh mum Martin must really like
you."
After offering Susan a jelly baby and having one myself I then asked her
if she would like to assist me after breakfast, as there was rather a
lot of setting up to do, she readily agreed, provided she could have
more jelly babies.
A little later that morning down in my basement workshop I busied myself
building a very simple prototype following the design from the article
that Susan had found the previous day, the simple circuit consisted of
two transistors connected as a Darlington pair, the Darlington pair
provided a large amount of gain which in turn provided a large voltage
swing to a power FET (field effect transistor), the FET was connected
to a coil (consisting of many turns of insulated copper wire wrapped
around a plastic former and varnished in place), the circuit was then
powered by a DC (Direct Current) 30Volt 25Amp variable Power supply, the
input to the Darlington pair was then connected to my programmable
function generator, I initially tested the circuit at a much lower power
than it would normally be used at, and it appeared to work, or at least
it did what I intended it to.
Whilst I worked on my device Susan was working on the monitoring system
for the experiment, (it seems that she has inherited my, love of all
things technical and she until recently had regularly assisted me with
projects in my workshop), Susan connected up a 16 channel digital video
recorder (the type used for CCTV and video surveillance) and then with
several lengths of coaxial cable connected the inputs of the digital
video recorder to the video outputs of my digital oscilloscope and
spectrum analyser, she also connected video cameras to the microscope,
and one monitoring my test circuit, there was also a camera monitoring
current and voltage drained by the circuit. By the time we had completed
all of these tasks I was in considerable pain, as I had deliberately
missed a dose of painkillers in order to keep my mind as clear as
possible, I decided to skip lunch and have a nap, on the way to my room
however I sneaked outside and had a cigarette, I noted whilst smoking it
that this was only my third cigarette of the day, I realised to myself
that the busier I was the less I smoked, I then started to regret my
many weeks of wallowing in self-pity, slowly getting myself more and
more hooked on cigarettes.
Chapter 6 Missing Persons.
I was woken with a start from my afternoon nap by my mobile phone
ringing.
I managed to answer it after some fumbling, it was Clive my private
investigator, he told me that he had managed to acquire some CCTV
footage from the building across the road from the hotel that proved
that Alice had actually entered her hotel, this was strange as they had
claimed that they had no record of her booking in, Clive advised me that
I should report Alice as missing to the local police, and then also
report her missing to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London,
Clive told me that he was going to attempt to acquire the CCTV footage
from the hotel's camera's, he also advised me that neither I nor any
other member of my family should travel to America at the moment, but he
did not divulge why.
I thanked Clive and hung up, I then immediately contacted the local
police and the Foreign office, the police took my report very seriously
and told me that they would be forwarding my information to the UK
National Central Bureau of Interpol, the Foreign office reacted more
slowly however and just said that they would look into it.
After that I sat quietly on my bed looking at our favourite wedding
photograph, Alice and I both looked so happy and carefree dressed in our
wedding finery.
I had a quiet little cry to myself as I looked at the photograph.
I also quietly prayed that Clive would somehow find Alice safe and well.
Later that afternoon I got a phone call from Matt, my father in law and
Alice's father, he was horrified to find out that Alice was missing and
offered to travel immediately to New York, I told him about Clive and
his warning and suggested that he stay on board the Cruise ship with
Iona and the twins until I could arrange some protection for them, he
reluctantly agreed.
I made several phone calls after my conversation with Matt and then
cleaned my tear stained face before re-applying my makeup, I then opted
for a nicotine gum instead of a cigarette, I also took a couple of
painkillers.
A few minutes later I was in the kitchen asking Dot if she could make me
a little late lunch, I then realised as I was eating my sandwich that I
had managed to keep hold of my breakfast today.
"Hmm the ginger must be working." I said to myself.
Chapter 7 Joy Versus Cancer (Round Two).
Nothing really happened over the weekend, Ruby and her staff were now
working around the clock in shifts, culturing and growing cancer cells
for me to try and kill, I arranged via our London office for several
private security contractors to discretely shadow Matt, Iona the twins
and Stacy, I was slowly reducing my nicotine intake, but I still found
that I really missed smoking.
***
Unfortunately the pains in my body were increasing on a daily basis as
the tumours grew and multiplied within me.
On Monday morning after dressing I left my room wearing a light skirt
and blouse, bare legs, and 2" wedge heeled shoes, I was not wearing my
hated wig today but I was sporting a freshly shaved head (this morning I
had noticed some thicker dark stubble, I wondered if my hair was finally
starting to grow back), I made my way to the dining room.
When I arrived Ruby was already there and was tucking into a giant fried
breakfast, she looked towards me.
"Good morning Joy, I've put some dishes containing cultured cells into
the storage unit in your workshop, it's time for you to start zapping, I
really do hope that you succeed." I thanked her and asked Dot for a
snack to take out, as Dot was preparing it Ruby spoke again.
"Would you mind if I took a DNA sample from you Joy as a reference?, I
need to verify a theory I have." I agreed and as if by magic she
produced a swab from her lab coat, she then proceeded to scrape some
cells from the skin on the inside my mouth, Ruby then thanked me and
asked for my permission to take a sample of Susan's DNA also, as she
placed my swab into a sterile container and continued to eat her
breakfast.
In my workshop a little later, I placed the first of many little dishes
containing my cancer under the microscope, I focussed it and for the
first time could see the irregular little blighter's that were trying to
kill me, I checked my equipment one last time and powered up, I set the
function generator to generate a square wave and then set the frequency
to 200 Khz, I programmed it to stay on each frequency for five seconds
then increment by 10Hz and repeat, the DVR was turned on and checked
that all of the cameras were working, the last thing I did was crank up
the coil power up to maximum.
Every three hours the process would be stopped, fresh cells added and
the frequency sweep would be restarted from where it had finished on the
previous sweep, slowly incrementing the frequency as it went. I had
chosen a square wave as an input to my device as square waves are nasty
noisy waves and produce lots of odd harmonics my reasoning for this was
that it may not be one of the fundamental frequencies that worked in
killing the cancer cells but one of the harmonics and a sine wave
although pure did not really create a lot of harmonics.
During the next few days live cells were replaced by more live cells, it
was really quite disheartening to see live cancer cells on the screen
when I changed the dishes but I persevered.
During this time however I Was contacted once more by my private
detective Clive, he had located the digital video recorder from the
security room of the hotel that Alice was supposed to be staying at,
unfortunately the hard drives had all been wiped, I instructed him that
if he could manage it, he should remove the hard drives from the digital
video recorder and replace them with new blank ones and then send them
back to me, he reluctantly agreed.
Meanwhile late one afternoon after four disheartening days of
unsuccessful frequency sweeps, I entered my workshop and noticed that
almost all of the cells showing on the on the monitor had fractured,
this was a good sign, I cautiously reviewed the CCTV footage and noted
down the frequency that the cells fractured at and from the spectrum
analyser the harmonic frequencies that were generated also.
I placed a new dish of cells under the microscope and set the frequency
to the one I had noted down, when I applied power to the circuit to my
astonishment the cells under the microscope started to very quickly
rupture.
After a while I had checked all the harmonic frequencies, fortunately
for me, it was the base frequency that had caused the cells to rupture.
As I didn't really have anything to lose any more I decided to
experiment upon myself with my home made device, I held the emitter
against my left breast for a few minutes, after a while I started to
feel quite nauseous, so I turned off the emitter.
I left my workshop and made my way back up to our rooms, I decided to
lie on our bed until I felt a little better, I closed my eyes.
The next thing I remember was when Susan woke me
"Mum, Mum wake up." I woke with a start.
"I'm sorry Susan I must have nodded off what time is it?" she looked at
me and said
"No one has seen you since yesterday, I was getting worried about you
Mum."
It seemed that I had slept almost fourteen hours, I also now had a
banging headache and I really needed to pee, I excused myself and went
into the bathroom, I sat down to pee, as the flow started I noted that
it actually stung a little today and although I now had very little
control of my stream now I loved it, as it reminded me that I was no
longer the boy that had come to live here several years ago and that I
was a woman now and proud of it, once I finished I wiped myself and
pulled my panties back up, then just before I flushed I noticed my pee
in the bowl, it was very strong and dark, I made a mental note to get a
sample for analysis next time I had a pee, I re-entered our room Susan
was still there.
"I just need to check something Susan I tried something yesterday and
want to see if it has had an effect." I said, Susan looked on as I
removed my blouse and undid my bra, I examined my left breast and
noticed that there was a slight reddening of the tissue around the area
of the tumour and to my eyes the tumour did not appear to be Quite as
big as it had been, more reassuringly Susan also commented
"Mum, that lump on your boob looks a little smaller today." I agreed.
"I tried my machine on myself yesterday Susan it made me feel very
unwell but I think that it might have worked a little" Susan looked a
little worried.
"I hope so mummy I really do."
A few minutes later I decided to have a shower, today however I did not
shave my head as I looked to be getting a rather strong growth of dark
stubble on my head, once finished I patted myself dry and then put on a
touch of light make-up to give my face some colour and dressed, I placed
a slightly weaker Nicotine patch on my arm and took a painkiller, then
wandered downstairs for breakfast.
At breakfast I decided that as I was feeling rather thirsty I had two
glasses of ice cold milk and a cup of Dot's ginger tea, I also had two
slices of toast with marmalade, Ruby was sitting quietly observing me.
"I must say Joy that you appear to have quite an appetite today, is the
ginger helping at all?" she said as I munched through my second slice of
toast.
"Yes Ruby the Ginger does take the edge of my nausea and I think it may
also be because I believe that I managed to murder some of those pesky
little cancer cells yesterday." Ruby looked at me quizzically and asked
me.
"So Are you going to let me into your little secret then Joy, how did
you 'murder' them, what happened to them?"
I suggested that the best way to show her would be for me to give Ruby
a demonstration and actually kill some fresh cells, so shortly
afterwards we both left for my workshop.
As soon as we arrived I took a dish containing fresh cancer cells out of
storage and placed it under the microscope, Ruby could see the cells
clearly, I then turned on my home made emitter and started to crank up
the amplitude and before our eyes the many little cells started to
quickly rupture, Ruby actually gasped, she looked at me then the screen
and after a few seconds all the cells on the sample dish had expired, I
then explained how I had found the resonant frequency of the cells and
that they just seemed to self destruct when the amplitude of the
resonant wave was high enough.
"I've heard of doctors using ultrasound to dissolve kidney stones Joy
but this is a new one on me But it does seem to be very effective." I
then said
"And that's with the emitter at amplitude level three."
Ruby then asked if she could try something before I continued my
experiments, I agreed she then wandered off to her mobile lab and after
about five minutes came back into my workshop carrying a large
refrigerated storage container.
"Using the exact same settings as you have just used can you try and
destroy the cells in these these samples for me please." so over the
next two hours I tried unsuccessfully to destroy any of her samples even
on the highest setting, I was really disappointed as I thought I had
failed.
I was however also now feeling feel very unwell.
"I'm sorry, it looks as though I've failed Ruby I really thought I was
onto something.." Ruby however did not look the least bit dejected
though, she smiled at me and said.
"I'm actually rather glad you Didn't kill any of my other samples Joy,
as they were all normal human tissue samples, Heart, Liver, Kidney skin
and others, so your clever little device only seems to be killing the
cancer cells. Although I don't yet understand the mechanism that causes
the cells to rupture.." I started to brighten up at this point and asked
Ruby a question.
"Does my device make you feel ill Ruby?, because every time I switch it
on I start to feel ill after a few minutes and at the moment I feel
decidedly queasy?" Ruby pondered this for a few seconds and said.
"No Joy I feel absolutely fine, but then again I don't have cancer do
I?, I think that what may be happening is when the cells rupture and
die they are poisoning your body, they should however be quite quickly
cleaned from your blood stream and passed in your urine, maybe you
should increase your liquid intake whilst you are using the device. Was
your pee stronger than usual this morning?? I answered her truthfully.
?Yes it was rather strong this morning, but I felt much better after one
of my painkillers and a drink.?
She rummaged through her large bag and produced a small plastic test
tube with a lid.
?Here take this, next time you pee, fill this and either give it to me
or one of my technicians.?
I took the small plastic tube, I was currently wondering how I was going
to fill the tube without making a mess considering my modified plumbing
didn't have the directional jet capability that my original plumbing
had.
About an hour later I supplied a sample to Ruby in her laboratory.
I smiled as I said.
?Next time, could you provide me with a funnel please?? I joked as I
passed the small test tube of rather dark looking liquid over to Ruby.
Chapter 8 Martin. (The Knockout Blow)
During the next few days I continued to use my home-made device on
myself sometimes two or three times a day, the visible tumour on my left
breast was significantly reduced by this time. I still felt dizzy and
nauseous when I used the device, but I persevered. I also took to
drinking lots of water and milk throughout the day; I also started
reducing my pain medication slightly and increasing the gaps between
doses.
I was for the first time in what seemed like ages starting to feel a
little more like me again. One morning just after I had woken as I stood
naked looking at my body in our full length mirror I noticed that my
eyebrows were starting to grow back in, this surprisingly made me feel
very happy indeed and I noticed myself smile as I traced them with my
finger.
Unfortunately, there had been no more news from Clive, I was now
starting to worry about him also. Matt had wisely decided to keep a low
profile, and was extending his holiday with his wife and our adventurous
twins, I was advised to suspend all of Alice?s bank accounts and her
access to company finances and files this I did immediately with one
exception, I left her credit card several thousand pounds in credit.
As I usually did in the mornings I dressed before breakfast, this time
however I took a little extra time on my make-up, I think I just wanted
to try and feel pretty once more, once finished I looked into the mirror
on our vanity and gently traced my fingers over my cheek and noticed
that I no longer had the tell-tale stains on my fingers that marked me
as a smoker, if only the rest of me was recovering as fast I thought to
myself. I slipped on a pair of ballet flats and made my way down to
breakfast. As I was catching my breath at the bottom of the main
staircase before going into the dining room I heard the doorbell ring so
as nobody else was about I decided to answer it myself and as I opened
the front door a very cheery postman passed me a parcel
?You?ll need to sign for it Luv, have you been buying stuff on eBay
then?? asked the Postman and I as I signed for it on his little gizmo, I
noticed that it had been sent from America, just before I closed the
front door, in the distance I noticed two people walking up our
driveway, as they got closer I could see it was Martin and his lovely
mum!, I smiled to myself and waited for them, when they finally reached
the front door I invited them both in, I was especially pleased to see
Martin.
?I'm really sorry about this Mrs Stevenson, but Martin has been becoming
increasingly worried about you and insisted that he came over to see
you, so he took today off from work and we came over on the bus, I hope
that you don?t mind?? I smiled at them both and said.
?I don?t mind at all, that was a really kind thought from both of you,
would you like to join me? I was just about to have a little breakfast.?
I ushered them both into the dining room after taking their coats and
hanging them up by the front door.
?I hope you have brought me some jelly babies Martin my stocks have run
out?? he smiled shyly.
As I entered the dining room, I could see Susan, Ruby, and three of her
technicians at the dining table already, I showed Martin and his Mum to
their seats.
***
Shortly afterwards Dot came in and took their food orders (Dot really
was loving all of the extra work that my unexpected guests had brought),
As I was feeling surprisingly good this morning I actually had a
sausage sandwich.
After breakfast, I asked Susan if she would like to Accompany Martin?s
mum for a walk around our grounds and possibly even on a shopping trip
in town a little later, she readily agreed, I turned to Martin and asked
him if he would like to come down to my workshop and see what I had been
working on, he just nodded.
I showed Martin down into the basement to my small workshop, I then
showed him my experimental device and how I was using it to destroy the
cancer cells in a dish, he liked that and as I appeared to have piqued
his interest he actually started to ask me questions about my project,
this made me very happy.
?Um how are you treating yourself with your widget?? he asked, I then
explained that I was just sort of waving it around my body until I
started to feel unwell, his response was typical Martin.
?That's a bit random, I'm sure I could make something that could do it
better.? I knew Martin could not help his manner, (I also knew he was
correct) but still I did feel slightly insulted, I then asked him what
he would do to improve my prototype, as I had hoped Martin then launched
into a detailed description of exactly what he would do and what
improvements he would make.
Martin explained that I should lie motionless on a bed, similar to a
tanning bed, under me there would be an emitter that would be able to
scan me lengthways at high speed, and above me another emitter that
would scan across my body at high speed, he then offered me a jelly
baby.
Martin then spent the next couple of hours before lunch on one of my
laptops producing some very detailed drawings of the mechanics, belt
drives and servos that would be required for the scanning mechanisms,
whilst I listened to him I used my device on myself, I was very
impressed at the detail that martin had managed to provide in such a
short time when I looked at his diagrams.
?Would you be able to make this for me Martin?? I asked, he looked at me
and said.
?Can't see why not.? he paused and then said.
?I'm hungry.? I smiled and took him upstairs for some lunch, I left
Martin with Dot, and went up to our room, I needed to have a pee, a
drink and a lie down in that order as I now felt rotten.
I woke roughly two hours later feeling much better, freshened myself up
and went back downstairs, Susan was in the library talking animatedly to
Martins mum about School, I joined them as I could see that Dot had
provided cakes and tea on the table in front of them.
I greeted them both and sat down, I asked Susan where Martin was.
?Oh, he took his sandwiches and went back down to your workshop Mummy,
he said that he had an idea he was mumbling something about super
capacitors and ferrite resonators, I hope that is okay??
I grabbed a cake from the stand and started to nibble on it absent
mindedly.
?I have to thank you for bringing Martin along today Err 'Martin's mum'
he's been a great help.? I realised that I didn't actually know her
name, I felt so embarrassed, she just smiled and said.
?Martin has been quite worried about you; he wanted to do something to
help, he really loves working with you in the research department and I
think he really misses you when you?re not there, oh and please call me
Brenda.?
After a few minutes, I got up from my comfy chair and said. ?I suppose
I'd better go and see what young Martin is up to then, I hope you don't
mind entertaining Brenda for a little longer Susan??
she smiled: ?Of course I don't Mum can I borrow a driver please, so we
can go into town??
I smiled and nodded at Susan. I left for my workshop whilst still eating
my cake.
As I entered the workshop I noticed, from the noise of the extractor fan
and the smoke rising from the tip of my soldering iron, that Martin had
been rather busy and from the look of it he'd modified my hand-held
emitter?s electronics.
?It?s got much more power now, I've used a micro controller board to
generate the frequencies and I'm pulsing the signal, and modulating it
at the same time look.? he put a dish of cells under the microscope, I
could see many healthy cancer cells, Martin switched on the power, and
almost instantly they all ruptured, I was amazed.
?What?s this bit for Martin?? I said whilst pointing at a small metal
box between the power supply and the modified emitter
?Your power supply was having a little trouble coping with the current
spikes and was starting to create parasitic oscillations on the 5 Volt
rail so I?ve used several super capacitors connected in parallel to
buffer the supply rail and extra decoupling capacitors on the chips.?
?So that will increase the power rather a lot Martin??
?Yes, but the emitter now gets quite hot to the touch so I have limited
it.?
?Ah, wise move.?
?Can I download the new settings to the company?s shared drive please;
so I can make some new and more powerful emitters for you?? I simply
nodded my head.
?And can I build you a cancer killing bed?? he hesitated then said ?Joy,
please?? I looked at this this wonderful young man and just said.
?Yes Martin, anything you need, just ask.?
?I need my workshop and lots of bits.? so after a rather short stunted
conversation I contacted our business in Teesside and told them to
assist Martin with his new project and to give him anything he needed.
Later that afternoon I got our driver to take Martin and his mum back to
their home in Stockton. As I was standing at the door watching the car
go down the drive I remembered the small well wrapped package that had
arrived this morning, I closed the door and picked it up and took it
with me into the library.
Upon opening it I found two hard drives with a short note 'hard drives
from hotel, hope you can find something useful on them', it was just
signed Clive.
I immediately contacted a data retrieval company that we had used to
resurrect lost data from a damaged hard drive on Matt's laptop a few
months previously, they told me that they would send a driver to pick
the drives up straight away, I went into the dining room and asked Dot
if she would make me a sandwich and a cup of tea, Dot seemed very
pleased that I was eating more and slightly overdid my snack.
Chapter 9 The Poacher.
It was now nearly a month since Alice's mysterious disappearance in New
York. Although I tried not to show it to our staff and visitors, I was
almost frantic with worry and sometimes I just sat on our bed and looked
at our wedding photo, hoping that when I turned I would once again see
her smiling face looking back at me. I longed to kiss her lips and hug
her again, I was truly miserable without her, fortunately our oldest
daughter, Susan, was doing a great job of keeping my spirits up and
helping me whenever she could.
I woke up on a rather sunny Sunday morning and stretched, I still ached
as I stretched that morning but nowhere near as bad as I had done
previously, my pain medication easily controlled my aches now, I was
only using nicotine gum to control my urge to smoke, (I did sometimes
sneak a cigarette or three but I didn't need them any more just to
function). I removed my night shirt and examined myself in the mirror, I
was still painfully thin and dangerously underweight but I had also
gained a little weight and I was very happy that I could no longer see
the tumour on my breast and that some of the other visible lumps and
bumps were receding, I decided to myself that today I would like to
dress up a little.
I had a long shower and then patted myself dry with one of our large
bath towels, I found a lovely pair of lace panties and a matching bra,
my breasts did not really fill the cups any more due to my weight loss
but today I didn't really care I pulled on a pair of skin-tone tights
and a half slip, I then found one of Alice's favourite summer dresses
and stepped into it, I completed my dressing with a lovely pair of
ballet flats.
I looked in the mirror, smiled and thought to myself I?m starting to
look like me again. I then sat in front of the vanity unit and carefully
applied my make-up, I lined my eyes and added a little mascara, I also
used my eyebrow pencil to give my now growing eyebrows a little colour
and shape, I didn't bother with powder but did put on a little lipstick.
I looked at myself in the mirror and smiled, the overall effect was not
unpleasant, it would probably take quite a while to get my former looks
back I thought to myself. I left our rooms shortly afterwards for some
breakfast.
At breakfast, I chatted with Susan about school as I ate my cereal and
then I went down to my basement workshop, I used my modified emitter
until I felt quite poorly then I went up to one of the guest rooms on
the ground floor for a couple of hours? rest.
Once I was rested, and had a couple of trips to the loo, I felt much
better and then went into the library to do some paperwork.
As I was staring aimlessly out the window of the library at the grounds,
I noticed Daniel the gamekeeper and his dog in the distance, I then
decided that today I would attempt something that only a couple of weeks
ago, I would never have dreamt of doing, I would go for a short walk.
I left the house soon afterwards after putting on a warm coat and I
slowly strolled through the woods towards the lake, I held my hand out a
little and imagined to myself that Alice was holding it, I smiled as I
remembered Alice and I pushing our babies in their buggies along this
path to the lake, and how happy we both were together then.
After a while I arrived at our favourite spot, it was a small rocky
outcrop just above the lake, Alice and I used to sit here for hours in
each other?s arms and just hold each other whilst we watched the view.
Today unfortunately it was just me, as I sat and looked down at the
lake, tears started to form in my eyes and I started so sob quietly to
myself.
Just as I was drying my eyes with a small handkerchief, before I headed
back to the house I heard what sounded like a low groan coming from the
thicket to my right, I looked over but could not see anything, then I
heard another groan, I moved hesitantly over towards the sound, but
still could not see anything, then a section of the undergrowth appeared
to move.
I moved back a little and looked around to see if I could catch
someone?s attention. I could see Daniel walking up the path towards me
with his dog so I gestured to him and he came towards me at speed.
?What can I do for you Miss?? he asked, I pointed towards the thicket
and said.
?There's something or someone in there Daniel, it groaned.? without
hesitation he made his way into the thicket as his dog stood guard next
to me and after a few seconds I heard
?Gotcha.? Daniel then appeared to be dragging the undergrowth out with
him, he smiled at me and said
?Crafty one this, he's wearing a ghillie suit.? ?he's probably blind
drunk otherwise you may never have seen him let's see who he is shall
we?? Daniel removed a portion of the ghillie suit and was a little
surprised.
?Hmm I don?t recognise him Miss, he's not one of the locals.? I noticed
on his arm there was a dark stain that had come through onto his
clothing it was blood he appeared to have hurt himself, I pointed this
out to Daniel and he pulled the ghillie suit down a little further to
reveal a large nasty looking gash just below our mystery poacher?s
shoulder.
?He's injured Daniel look.? Daniel started as if he were about to say
something then suddenly stopped, turned pale and looked over at me.
?We have to help him miss? he picked up the unconscious man in his large
arms.
?Please miss can we help him?? I looked puzzled at Daniel normally he
would just have just called the police and let them deal with a poacher
but he looked genuinely concerned for this man.
?I think he may be ex-military miss he needs our help.?
I then remember once Being told by Matt that sometimes Military men
found it difficult to reintegrate with society after leaving the armed
forces and a lot became vagrants and tramps, my father in law was the
patron of several charities that helped ex-servicemen. I Immediately
instructed Daniel to take the man back up to the house, I followed
behind Daniel at a much slower pace, curiously Daniels large dog stayed
with me almost as if he was watching over me.
I took the opportunity whilst I was walking back to the house to contact
Dr Mike on my mobile phone, I told him that we had found an injured man
on the estate and asked him if he could attend him, Dr mike then said he
would be there as soon as he could.
I eventually reached the house, I was completely exhausted and had a
mini coughing fit that surprisingly cleared my chest a little of some
rather unpleasant looking phlegm. I sat down in the entrance hallway to
recover, Dot brought me a hot sugary drink and a snack, she had told
Daniel to put the man on one of the guest beds.
?Why do you want to help him so much Daniel?? I asked as I entered the
guest room where Daniel was almost standing guard over the unkempt
bearded man, he pointed to the top of his arm, I could see a small
tattoo, it looked like a sword cutting two waves, it also had the words
'by strength and guile' as a banner underneath, I looked at Daniel
blankly.
?I think he may have once been in our special forces miss, I believe he
was in The Special Boat Service, it certainly explains why I have has so
much trouble locating him, the SBS helped us out of a very tricky
situation once when I was serving in Iraq.? I nodded knowingly at Daniel
and made a mental note to look the Special Boat Service up on the
internet later.
Doctor Mike arrived shortly after, and diagnosed that the wound on our
poacher's arm was badly infected, as he cleaned the wound he explained.
?Not good, not good at all Joy.? I asked Dr Mike what the problem was
and he showed me.
?Can you see here Joy, around the wound, the little red tracks running
down his arm, his wound is badly infected and the infection is now
travelling he almost certainly has blood poisoning, he should really be
in hospital, I will give him antibiotics now and call for an ambulance
if you don't mind.?
I agreed with him and said. ?I feel responsible for him Dr Mike as he
was on our land, please look after him for me.?
Soon our unconscious mystery poacher was whisked off by ambulance to the
local hospital for urgent treatment, Doctor Mike who had stayed behind
turned to me and said.
?Joy it's been a little while since I last visited you, how are you
feeling, do you need any more pain medication?? I answered him honestly
and said.
?No Doctor Mike, actually I'm feeling slightly better at the moment I
even went for a walk earlier down to the lake, that's where I found the
poacher.?
?Hmm.? Said Dr Mike as he eyed me sceptically.
?And I have been taking slightly less painkilling medication for the
last few days too.? I decided that it might not be a good idea to tell
him about my alternative therapy, he carried on looking at me
sceptically.
?And your smoking, have you managed to cut down anymore??
?Yes, Dr Mike, I'm still wearing a patch sometimes and chew the nicotine
gum, but I'm usually only smoking a couple a day now.?
?Do you have anyone who could sit in with me whilst I give you a quick
examination Joy?? I suggested Dot and he agreed.
A few minutes later I was undressing in our room. I put a thin silk robe
on over my semi naked frame and asked Dr Mike to enter, both Dr Mike and
Dot entered my room, Dr Mike put on a pair of latex gloves and asked me
to disrobe, I could see that Dot was a little shocked by my emaciated
body, Dr Mike examined me and was paying particular attention to where
my tumours were visible under the surface of my skin, he a little seemed
uneasy at my condition.
?Joy your visible tumours somehow appear to have reduced in size since
my last examination.? I smiled and said. ?I hope that you are giving me
good news Doctor??
he wasn't smiling: ?My most pressing question is, why have your tumours
reduced? I'm not an oncologist but they usually only grow especially
when they didn?t respond to Chemotherapy.? he pondered this for a moment
and told me. ?Joy I need you to come to hospital for another scan, would
tomorrow afternoon be okay for you? oh I'll also need a urine sample
from you too.? he looked at his diary and then asked ?How about 14:00??
I nodded my head and asked: ?I hope I wo
