likely find, that if you were shy you're still shy, if you didn't like

things you think of as your strengths and weaknesses will still be there.
But if you are expecting that all your problems will pass away, and that
everything is going to be easy emotionally and socially from here on in,
you're probably going to be disappointed.
The point of hormone therapy is to feel more comfortable with your body
by bringing physical characteristics closer to your internal sense of
self. This relief can increase self-esteem and make you feel more
confident and attractive. However, you will find that there are also
attractiveness standards after hormone therapy, and you may not fit them.
It can be hard to separate out gender dysphoria from body image
problems."
"Alright," I said. "I'm going to go talk to someone. I'll talk to a
doctor."
We spent the entire evening figuring out where to get hormone replacement
therapy and we discovered that since we lived in a major metropolitan
area there were planned parenthood clinics which offered hormone
replacement therapy. The next day we made an apointment. On the day when
I was meant to start hormone replacement therapy my wife walked me up to
the clinic and sat in the waiting room with me. The nurse called me by my
preferred name, Stevonnie, and I got up and walked into the hallway. The
nurse weighed me and kept calling me by my name. She took my pulse and
blood pressure and led me to a waiting room. I sat down and waited. It
seemed like forever. The doctor had an incredibly warm smile and her
golden curly hair made her look like a sunflower.
"Hi," she said. "So you're here because you think you might want to start
transitioning?"
I explained myself. I talked about the confusion and how long I'd thought
about it. How I'd spent so much time trying to figure it out by reading
trashy fiction on skeevy websites and how they kept just making me feel
so confused and I just figured out that I'd been making a horrible
mistake by not confronting what was always inside of myself and had been
beaten down and out of me.
"There's a thing called 'informed consent,'" she said. "After appropriate
education and advisement about the treatment in question, the ultimate
decision regarding treatment choice rests with the patient alone! The
informed consent model has been adopted at many centers that provide

for me?"
"We can give you medications that will change your sex steroids," she
said. "There are lots of medication that can change the levels of sex
steroids. Changing these will affect fat distribution, muscle mass, hair
growth, and other features that are associated with sex and gender. This
can help make your body look and feel less masculine and more feminine -
making your body more closely match your identity.
Estrogen is the main thing responsible for promoting female physical
traits. It works directly on tissues in your body, giving you breasts,
and also suppresses your testosterone.?Typically hormone therapy involves
estrogen, medication to block testosterone, or a combination of the two.
Sometimes a progestagen is added to the mix. We'll probably start on
spironolactone, which is a testosterone blocker, and estradiol, an
estrogen.
Clinical protocols for hormone replacement therapy vary greatly. There is
no one right hormone combination, type, or dose. Deciding what to take
depends on your health (each medication has different risks and side
effects), what is available locally, and what you can afford. It also
depends on how your body reacts when you start taking hormones -
everyone's body is different and sometimes people have a negative
reaction to a specific kind of medication, but you're healthy and these
drugs are very safe. The estrogen you'll get is the kind that's in half
the population. Spironolactone is extremely safe."
"Is there anything I shouldn't do if I take it?" I asked. "How fast will
it work?"
"If you smoke, stop or cut down. Smoking greatly increases the risks
involved with hormone therapy," she said. "In fact, further independent
review of previous studies that reported hormone replacement therapy
causes blood clots have been shown that blood clots only happen in trans
women who smoke. Also," she said. "Being visibly trans in a transphobic
society has social risks. While it is possible to stay closeted if you're
taking small doses of anti-androgens, as the changes aren't highly
visible, estrogen causes changes that can be visible, such as breast
growth. Some visibly trans people experience violence, harassment, and
discrimination, while others lose the support of their loved ones. What
is your support network like?"
"My wife drove me here," I said. "I think I'll be okay. I think I can
find people who will treat me the way I want to be treated."
"That's good," she said. "Most insurance companies cover the cost of HRT
with the exception of the co-pay (that is paid by the patient). The costs
ranges from $5 to $40 per month depending on the method, manufacturer and

it out and gave it back to her. Then they took my blood and the doctor
gave me a prescription. I filled it out the next day. I was a little
nervous, but I started hormone replacement therapy. I take pills two
times a day.
It took me a long time and a lot of thought, but now when I look at
myself I see a girl most of the time and I don't feel quite as disturbed
by the sensation of having a body. It was a little difficult in a lot of
ways, but I went into it with my eyes open. There wasn't any magic
involved. I'm just a normal person. People get treatment like this every
day who don't have the same kind of support that I do and you know what?
They're normal people. They aren't magic. They just find out what their
treatment options are, find out how to get them, and then take them. I
feel much healthier about my life and my relationships. Anyone could do
this. I did. You can too, but you have to stop reading fiction on the
