She sat alone in the funeral home, her grandmother who had raised her was
gone. Her father had been taken away without her knowing it. Of course,
she'd always hidden from him whenever he'd come around. She could
remember how he'd treated her mother, her Aunts, even her sisters who
were like she was. A girl hiding inside a boy.
She'd inherited enough from her Grandmother that she could afford almost
anything. But she really wanted her mother and her older sisters. She
knew her mother hadn't had a choice when she left her with her
grandmother. But she didn't know how to find her.
She remembered coming home from school one evening as her Grandmother was
telling someone on the phone, "Your two oldest daughters are in the news.
And it looks like they have a much younger sister. I'm happy that you
can't screw up Ed's life and drive him away the same way you have
everyone else in your life. Do you have any more bastard children out
there that I don't know about?"
She'd looked at the news recognizing one she knew as her sister. But the
news said she had disappeared, leaving with a bunch of other people. If
her next older sister had gone with those people, then her mother must
have gone as well.
But where had they really gone to? They'd tried to teach about it in
school, but still it was hard to believe in some Intergalactic Freeway. I
mean that was Science Fiction, right?
She'd dressed up in secret, hiding it even from her Grandmother. Now at
thirteen, she was here under the watchful eyes of the family services who
knew nothing about her secret desires to become a girl. They had left him
alone in the room with the casket, where could he possibly go?
He was carrying the backpack that he'd been permitted to pack himself.
They were going to take him to a foster home after the burial, rather
than let Carlotta continue to take care of him.
Now he slipped unseen behind the curtain, and out the door to the back
entrance. She hid in the garage used to store the backhoe used for
digging the graves, while he stripped off his clothes then became Edith
Smith. She still had her Bank Debit cards, even though they were in the
wrong name. she could use them at an ATM to get cash at least.
She almost giggled as she walked out past the Family Services people
waiting for Ed to come out of the room where his Grandmother lay.
She hurried and got in a cab, using the last of her ready cash to get a
ride to the truck stop at the edge of the city. There she took out three
hundred in cash, the maximum allowed by the bank for the Debit card.
She listened to the talk among the drivers, learning more about the
exodus. Meeting lots of alien drivers. Without saying exactly who she was
looking for, she learned where the convoys had gone.
It wasn't hard getting a ride to the immigration center in New Mexico,
but before she left she used her Credit card to make another withdrawal
in the amount of eight hundred Galactic Credits . There were lots of
drivers with the Kitten Safe Logo on their trucks. And though many knew
her planned destination was Iridani Five, none were told who it was she
was looking for, just that she had family there.
More than one thought she was bound for the Kitten Academy, but never
said so out loud.

It was two weeks after she'd gotten a ride heading toward Iridani from
the Immigration Center that Family Services finally got a court order to
open her Grandmothers Safe Deposit Box and to read the Last Will in
Testament. That was when they discovered her mother's identity.

Looking out the window beside the front door, Darla saw the black DFS
sedan and the young woman standing there ringing the doorbell.
"Mrs Vandine?"
"Yes, and you are?" she asked with the chain still in place.
"Amanda Treat. Are you Mrs Dotty Vandine?"
"Oh, no, what is this about?"
"Her former mother inlaw passed away last month. We are trying to find
out if her son has been in contact with her, may I come in?"
"No, wait there. I'll get her for you," she closed the door and turned
the lock. Then rushed to the newly created Dimension doorway.
Hyperventilating she rushed into Dotty's office.
"D, Dotty there's DFS at the house. They, they say they're looking for
you," she was slowly getting her breathing under control.
"Me, what do they want with me?" asked Dotty.
"They said your former mother inlaw passed away and wanted to know if
your son had been in contact with you," Darla was finally able to say.
"Ed?" she was moving toward the closet door.
Followed by Darla she opened the front door. "You have news about my
son?" she demanded.
She was shown a picture of him. Shoulder length, light brown hair, blue
eyes, the face was the same as the one from the picture she'd received at
the beginning of the school year, from the old woman.
"Yes that's Ed. Where is he?"
"We were hoping that he was with you. We know about the arrangements you
made to keep him safe from his father," stated Ms Treat. "He left a note
in his Grandmothers casket saying he was going to find you."
"I've not seen him," she said as she picked up the phone.
"David, Ed is missing. His grandmother died and they finally got around
to contacting me. But he's gone and they don't know where he is," she
could feel herself beginning to panic as she began to cry. "We have to
find him."
"Dotty we'll find him," he said. "I'll call in every favor I have if I
have to. We will find him." "Hello, Vincent? I need to get hold of Maddie
right away."

Ed had been depositing his monthly allowance in his own bank account. A
bank account that no one living knew he had. It was a trick he'd learned
from watching his brother/sister do to hide her own secret money. Of
course, back then it had been easier for her to get a bank card in her
new name. Edith didn't have that luxury, but he had been able to add a
second card for his 'sister' Edith Madison. And it was that card that he
was now using
Of course, at the Immigration Center, she'd told them she was seeking to
become a Kitten, after hearing that they didn't do as extensive a check
before issuing a Temporary ID to Kittens or those seeking to enter a
Kitten Shelter. They also made sure they had passage on a diner truck so
they weren't charged for transportation or meals. She was questioned
about why she wasn't going to the one in Cougar Town. But then she was
offered a job in one of the Diners headed to Omega Seven, with a promise
of being able to transfer to one going to Iridani.
The Diner owner promised to see that she got a permanent ID once she
reached Omega Seven. And upon arrival she had taken her to the bank,
which also took care of imigrations.
They issued her a new ID in the name of Edith Madison, age 13, bound for
the Kitten Shelter on Iridani Five.
Now she stood in the Intergalactic Bank of Omega Seven. Her temporary ID
in hand as she used her Debit card to transfer her funds to her new Bank
Account in the name of Edith Madison.
"You know if you're intent on becoming a Kitten, both Orion and Draconia
are closer," the New Accounts clerk told the pretty Human Transgirl in
front of her. Of course, she had never known any kitten or Kittenette
with over GC300,000 to place in an individual account.
"No I, my momma wanted me to go to Iridani," she said.
"Well if you catch a taxi to the Lone Wolf Truck Stop, there is a convoy
that will be leaving for Iridani in about ten hours. I could call ahead
and make sure you have a safe ride," she offered as she handed over the
new Debit Card and the new Permanent ID with her picture on it.
"Oh, thank you. That will help a lot." She was nervous as she waited.
What if the Authorities on Earth had discovered her card, or tracked her
here, could they force her to go back there?
"Ok, I'll get her a taxi and send her to you. Yes, thank you." She hung
up her phone. "Ok, when you get there you want to find the truck named
'Runner' or Butterfly, the drivers names are Jason and May Long Creek."
"Loraine, is that a Kitten headed to Iridani?" asked another clerk.
"Yes, I was just helping her get a ride," answered the clerk.
"Sweetie, if you'd rather ride with other girls your own age, there is a
bus from one of the Iridani Academy's about to leave from the New Mall
parking lot across from the Roller Coaster. They were here riding the
roller coaster for their Spring Break, the buses for the Kitten Academy
just shot the portal to Iridani," offered the other clerk as she picked
up her own phone.
"Miss Malissa, this is Nita at the bank. We have a young Kitten Hopeful
here trying to get a ride to Iridani." "Yes, thank you, I'll be sure that
she knows you're on your way."
"And?" asked Loraine.
"The bus already left but Headmistress Malissa will be here in her
personal car to pick her up in a few minutes."
It couldn't be one of her sisters, Missy was a Truck driver, she didn't
know what Stephanie did. But Malissa was too young to be a Headmistress
of some Girls Academy. And she had no idea about the one that had her
Grandmother so upset two years ago, when the Exodus had taken place.
Nita walked with her to the front entrance. Then as the Candy Apple Blue
1966 Plymouth Barracuda pulled up out front, she led her to the car as
the driver got out.
Edith barely registered being led to the car, her heart was pounding.
This was just like her mother's old car, and then the young woman turned
her head to look at her and her heart almost stopped.
"Miss Malissa this is Edith Madison," began the clerk.
"Edith, Edith Madison you say?" Nita saw a bit of an amused grin as it
played across the Headmistress' face. "Ed, Edith. Does your Grandmother
know you are here? Does Momma, know you are here?"
"You know her?" asked Loraine
"Yes, Edith is my, baby sister," she quickly recovered, wrapping her arms
around her.
"Momma, Gramma's calling," said another young girl from inside the car.
Malissa reached for the phone. "Thank you Maleeza. Bitch, Holochat
please," she said. "Momma?"
"Eddie, Ed is missing, David and I are trying to figure how to get hold
of Maddie Grey to help find him," Dotty rushed to get out past her tears.
"Momma, he isn't missing. Edith is right here with me," said Malissa.
"E, Edith?" questioned Dotty from the phone.
"Momma," Edith was crying, Malissa was crying, Dotty was crying.
"Oh, gods Baby, how did you get all the way out there?" asked Momma.
"I, I was trying to find you Momma," she was crying. "I was afraid to let
Grandma know that I was a girl too."
"But you're safe? You aren't hurt or anything?"
"No Momma. I was scared before. But, but the people who helped me get
here and Miss Nita at the bank helped me find Malissa."
"You stay with Malissa. Momma's going to be there just as soon as I can
get there," promised Dotty. "E, Edith, I'm sorry about having to leave
you with your Grandma."
"I, I know Momma. Grandma told me everything. How he, how mean my father
was."
Nita stood watching things, her own PDA automatically doing a DNA
comparison. This young girl was Headmistress Dotty Vandine's child by
birth. But she was not related to Headmistress Malissa pierce. Now she
was curious and tapped in a query.
"Nita?" it was her Drew Correll, her CEO.
"Yes sir?"
"Headmistress Malissa Madison-Vandine-Pierce, was adopted. But you have
no need to know who Miss Edith's father is. He is currently incarcerated
after being tried by the Council of First Beings. Please cancel your
search data before it triggers an alert."
She hit cancel, "Yes Sir."
"Edith, this is Maleeza, your ummm, niece," she introduced them with an
amused grin.
"Get out," said Maleeza. "I have an aunt that's younger than I am?"
Every time she tried to look directly at Maleeza though, she found
herself looking to the side.
"Gorge, stop it, Edith is not a threat," stated Maleeza as she petted the
thin air beside her and a big spider appeared. "Edith, this is Gorge.
Gorge meet Edith, my very young Aunt."

I was sitting in the front passenger seat, Maleeza and the spider that
she said was a Lyconian Howler sat in the back as we shot through the
portal.
Then, as I heard the sound of a phone ringing, the windshield lit up in a
view screen.
"Malissa, how far back are you? Corra is getting anxious," stated another
young woman. "And Nova and Tami are fussy."
"Sophie, we'll be catching up in about five minutes. Please let everyone
know that 'Our' baby sister is with me," said Malissa.
"Our Baby Sister? I thought Destiny was still with your sister, Stephanie
Wolfe."
"Edith, Momma adopted Sophie too, but she is my sister wife. And she is
taking care of our other children."
Sophie was clearly confused, but agreed to wait to find out everything.
And then I almost had a heart attack as we drove up into the back of one
of the trucks.
When we got out, I followed Malissa forward toward another truck.
"Mommy!" "Momma!" several young girls hurried toward us.
"Everyone, this is Edith, your Aunt. Please remember your manners," said
Malissa.
"Do we get to go to Earth again this summer?" asked one who was
introduced as Sherry.
"No, Grandma Vandine is going to be here in about two to three weeks,"
said Malissa which got lots of happy responses from everyone.
"Miss Malissa, Headmistress Tyrea is here to see you," said someone else.
"Tyrea, welcome."
"Thank you. I understand you picked up a Kittenette headed for the
shelter," she began.
"No Ma'am. I picked up my baby sister."
"You didn't pick up an Edith Madison?" she looked toward what I now knew
was a Gambichow. "Oh," her smile was warm. "She is lucky that she ran
into you before reaching Iridani then."
"Edith, Mistress Tyrea is the Headmistress at the Kitten Academy," I was
introduced.
"Hello, I'm Mika," said the Kitten beside her.
"Mommy, Tizzy needs go home now," said little Corra as Tyrea was
consulting her own Gambichow.
Tyrea looked at her own PDA phone thingy and said, "Mistress Kitten
Brennie, you are to ensure the Kittens get home safely."
"Tyrea?" asked my older sister.
"Momma, Mistress Gwendolyn is on her way home with, with the remains of
three lost Seekers," said Tizzy as she and her husband Nor Vey hurried
into the room. "We need to be there Momma. We need to help prepare for
the ceremony."
"Go, and safe journey," said Malissa as they stepped back. Tizzy holding
two of her three children, her husband holding the third as he held onto
Tizzy's elbow before they just disappeared. When I turned back Mistress
Tyrea and her Kitten were no longer there either.
I was still getting used to everything and everyone as we shot the portal
on Iridani.
"Edith?" it was Maleeza. "Thank you for being here." I wasn't sure why
she said that, but it made me feel as if I was needed. I'd been afraid at
first, as I started trying to help with my youngest nieces and nephews,
especially Novatani, Tammiana and Vincent.
I was slowly getting used to the idea that my Sister Malissa really was
the Headmistress of an all-girl school, and also that my Momma was
Headmistress of one on Earth.
Finally, I got up the nerve to ask Malissa about my father.
"Edith, he did some very, very bad things. He ummm, stole things from a
government research program. Things that made it possible for myself,
Missy and our oldest sister Stephanie Zimmer, who is a retired General
now, to be created. But I have no idea where he is incarcerated, but if I
had to guess, I'd say probably at the Saturn Maximum Correctional
Penitentiary," she said.
"No, he isn't there," said Sophie. "He is in Halcion."
We were both looking at her now.
"I wanted to know where the bastard was so I could be sure he never gets
out to hurt you," Sophie was hugging us both now.
"Malissa, sorry I missed the trip," apologized a man in a Colonels
uniform. "But you know I wouldn't have missed it if it wasn't important."
"What was that last meeting about? And why did you pay for two rooms?"
she demanded.
"Malissa, Sophie, I was being nice to someone else who could not afford a
room of her own. And I didn't think that you two would get jealous of my
gentlemanly offer to Miss Sindee Dianthima who is involved with the
special project."
"Wait, you mean the tanks sent a representative?" asked Sophie. "Why
couldn't she just stay in her Habitat?"
"Like myself, she was flown in for the meeting, then had to fly out to
the next which took much longer than expected," he explained.
"Can you at least tell us what this special project involves?" asked
Malissa.
"Yes, you remember the PTRV's?" he answered.
"Oh, ohh," they laughed finally. "Sorry we were both upset with you.
Right Sophie?"
Out of the corner of my eye I saw Maleeza make a circle with her thumb
and finger as she winked. What did my niece know about things that my
sister didn't?
Then the phone rang.
"Malissa I'll be there in a minute now that you're home," said Momma.
And then she was knocking on the back door, her head turned saying,
"Thank you for the Jump, Leila. But I think we'll wait until the rest
arrive for the summer, and then take the natural way home."
I saw some sort of shadow just before it was gone and everyone was
rushing toward the door.
Momma wrapped her arms around me, hugging me, her tears flowing down her
cheeks, her body shaking. Then she drew back a bit, her hand caressing my
hair. "Look at you, just as pretty as your sisters."
I'd started out trying to find Missy in hopes she could lead me to Momma.
But I'd found Malissa instead, and now had Momma back in my life.
Then, over the phone I began meeting my new Daddy and other two Momma's
who were still on Earth.
"I wonder why they didn't pick up on your being related to Malissa when
you processed through the immigration center on Earth?" pondered Momma
Darla.
"Darla, she is my natural born daughter. They don't really share DNA
because their father wasn't really their father the way he was Edith's,"
explained Momma.
Now I was confused, what did she mean he wasn't their father too?
Carefully, slowly they began to explain everything to me. Still they were
my sisters, no matter what anyone else thought. Yet, it was kind of hard
to realize I had nieces and nephews older than I was even if they were
adopted. And Malissa, she had given birth to three children now even
though she started out just like me.
Of course, I was so happy that I was with Momma again. She was everything
that I remembered her being, pretty, loving, understanding. And then
there was Darla and Mai Ling, my other two adopted Momma's. I was busy
thinking about them, I hadn't noticed when Stephanie arrived until she
was hugging me.
"Look at you, all grown up and pretty," she said. "You were just barely
older than Andrew the last time I saw you," she mentioned my baby brother
by Momma Darla.
I hugged her tightly, I could hardly believe she was a retired General
Officer. "I called Stephie, she'll be here in a little bit."
"Stephie?" I questioned.
"Yes, she's an Alpha. And she's bringing our other hidden sister
Destiny."
"The only one missing now is Missy," commented Momma.
"She's on Orion Five, but will probably be home by next week," commented
Daniel my nephew. "I called her from Grizzly to let her know you were
here." Daniel was my niece Erika's husband or fianc?, which ever, I
wasn't sure. And then there was Rachel and Greg, Anna and Starlight, and
Tizzy.
Tizzy was a Seeker married to another Seeker and they had triplets
together. Of course, they weren't as difficult to get used to as the
Spiders and the Gambichow. Seeing them and the skunks made me think of
Ophelia. I'd had to leave her behind when I left. But that was because I
was running away and had no idea where I would end up, also she'd had a
litter of Kits and I didn't think it wise to be hauling all of them
around with me. I just hoped that whoever bought Grandmas old house would
be nice to her.
I recognized Stephanie wolf right away. She was wearing the crossed
swords of an Alpha. She and her Apprentice, Destiny were the two sisters
I had never met before.
After we hugged I sat on the sofa, a very pregnant Waddles in my lap
purring while we talked. About a half hour into our first visit though
Steph, as I began to think of her stood up. "Momma, Destiny I will be
right back. I have an errand to run," she said without explanation as she
took out her cell phone. She dialed a number then suddenly she was gone
after asking is this Miss Ethel's house?"
It was probably an hour later that she returned, a huge bag over her
shoulder. The odor skunk musk emanating from it.
"Sorry that took so long, I had to find them first." She turned to Momma,
"I think Animal Control is a bit upset with me now."
"Why would they," started Momma.
"They no longer have a gas chamber," she said as she set the bag down
before unzipping it. "It's ok, you're safe here."
I was in tears as Ophelia poked her little nose out first, followed by
all six of her Kits. Of course, Waddles and Tadpole were right there in
an instant.
I was happy to have them again. They had been one of those things my
grandmother had forbidden, but I had kept them hidden under the shed out
back. It was my one true act of defiance against her. and the one thing I
had hated about leaving behind.
