Oh please! Have you no concept of why the English and Americans, who have
hardly ever been to Paris or at best spent no more than a day in it, come
up with bullshit like that? Or of why the most famous French quotation
about Paris, in a country not known for its early risers, is "Paris
appartient ? ceux qui se l?vent t?t."?
There was an English joke that hinted at the truth: "How many Frenchmen
does it take to defend Paris?" The answer was "I don't know, it's never
been tried before."
Yes, you see for the French, Napoleon's city is "plan?te Paris", it is not
France.
Paris an unfaithful lover, who tries to excite you at night around the
seedy streets of Montmartre or Pigalle, and whom you find has got up and
stolen your wallet and clothes and left you without leaving even a
telephone number.
Yes, Paris is a one night stand and it doesn't come any seedier than
Pigalle.
Paris is overrun by foreigners who cannot even speak French properly. You
don't believe me? Just try getting off a train at Gare de Lyon and finding
a taxi driver who can speak French properly.
That was my first experience of Paris.
I had spent a year living in la Bourgogne, (which now considers itself part
of real France) and was due to meet with Serge, the son of a teacher called
Laurence, who I had made friends with in Beaune. At least that was what I
was told.
Laurence had, quite sensibly, as soon as she had learnt to drive, persuaded
her Papa to give her some money, bought a car and fled Paris with no
intention of ever returning. It was Laurence who had told me how the rest
of the French had felt about Paris because she had seen it and felt it as a
Parisienne. She had showed me it by the brazen way she overtook traffic on
the right before turning left in her car with her 75 plaque
d'immatriculation and with her disdain for the right wing politics of the
vineyard owners of Burgundy.
Yes, Laurence was, like me "une ?trang?re".
Only I did not know it yet. I still thought of myself as "un ?tranger"
although with my poor French accent when I first arrived in Beaune I tended
to describe myself as "une ?trang?re" much to the amusement of Laurence and
my fellow teachers. After a few weeks, I got used to the difference
between "un" and "une" and learnt to shorten "?trang?re" party thanks to
the Fredericks, Goldman and Jones song "Nuit" which spoke of a woman as
"mon intime ?trang?re".
But Laurence noticed my "erreur de genre" and decided to play with it. She
noticed I was sympathetic to feminism and gay rights. I had read "le
Deuxi?me Sexe" by Simone de Beauvoir and "Justine ou les Malheurs de la
vertu" by the Marquis de Sade and I kept playing my Enigma album in her car
with its song "Sadeness" which I hadn't really understood and unconsciously
my choice of music was leading me along a path I did not understand.
Laurence and I would go to le Copacabana in Beaune and sing along to songs
like "Sans Contrefa?on" by Myl?ne Farmer. I knew that song was by a woman
singing that she was a boy but I had no idea who the Chevalier d'?on was.
I knew a Chevalier was a knight but I just assumed it was something to do
with the soldiers who were also mentioned in the song. Did Laurence know
who the Chevalier was? Obviously, but with my British education, the
Chevalier was not the sort of person you learnt about.
So I got off the TGV from M?con at Gare de Lyon with no idea of what was
about to happen on my first visit to Paris...
