The Unseen World.
David.
The modern world is a technological world where almost every single
machine or device is powered by or uses Electricity in some way but what
if Electricity after its discovery had been kept a secret from the
general population and only a select few very knowledgeable and
privileged people had access to it or knew how to manipulate it? Would
these people be classed as magicians. witches or wizards by those who
couldn't use or understand it?
Now imagine the real world the one that we all live on, a world where
almost everyone relies on technology but a small section of sensitive
people can and do use and manipulate energies that have not yet been
discovered by science and can mask their existence easily to keep the
populace blissfully unaware of the wonders around them.
So, the next time that you think you may have seen something curious or
strange out of the corner of your eye, you very probably did.
Chapter 1 David.
I've been watching him for some time now on and off and every day almost
exactly the same thing.
He leaves his squat an old run down red brick terraced house he shares
with several other of society's rejects just before lunchtime and goes
down to the market to try with various degrees of success to steal beg
and borrow to feed himself and his drug habit, of course he never sees
me, why would he even notice me?
Today starts off not really that different from any other day for this
slowly failing piece of human filth as he shuffles into an alleyway, sits
behind some bins and shoots up after first visiting with his supplier.
I watch as he carelessly discards his used syringe onto the ground before
he sits quietly for a few minutes basking in the unfulfilled afterglow of
his latest fix, as he's been taking heroin for so long now he no longer
gets high it's now just something he needs to get himself through the
day.
Sometime later he gets up and staggers a little before his balance is
restored and then heads towards his spot in the park via the nearest
discount off license.
He's already at the park when I arrive, quickly I mount a fence and walk
along its length before leaping over onto a handy nearby branch of an old
pear tree in order to get a better view.
He's nearly half way through his second cheap can of lager when I finally
observe him once more slumped against a park bench quietly muttering
incoherently to himself.
I just don't understand my fascination with this man, why do I keep
following him? because as of yet I have not observed one redeeming
feature in him.
Quietly resting on the sturdy branch in the sunshine shaded by the tree I
observe him, I can occasionally see his almost lifeless eyes when he
turns and looks around and wonder if at any point in his life he had
cared for anyone other than himself, I creep closer to him as if stalking
prey and then sit once again out of sight.
After nearly an hour sitting staring at his half-finished can of lager
and taking the occasional sip from it he looks wearily up and to his
right as he notices something by the old pavilion, he then starts to
watch a woman who was slowly walking alongside an electrically operated
wheelchair, in the wheelchair is a girl, she looks to me to be eight or
nine years old but it's hard to tell as her small frame is twisted and
contorted as a result of whatever illness she's suffering from, her hand
forms an obscene claw as it somehow manages to manipulate the joystick
that controls her wheelchair. Then I observe him suddenly sitting up
straight as the wheelchair comes towards him and then as the wheelchair
reaches him it stops.
"Hello Mrs Smart, hello Emily and how are you today?" Croaks the man.
the woman accompanying the wheelchair smiles weakly at him.
"I'm Sorry David but Emily is having a bad day today I took her to get
her hair cut short to make it more manageable and I think she's upset at
me about it I thought that coming to the park may cheer her up a little
but it hasn't."
The man called David then got up from his seat temporarily abandoning his
precious lager.
He returned a few seconds later after rummaging around in the flower beds
behind his seat with a tiny blue flower which he places in a buttonhole
on the little girl's blouse, Emily's face contorts into a grimace and she
makes a low growl.
I sense from the little girl immense gratitude, this surprises me
greatly.
"A pretty flower for a brave and pretty girl, I hope I'll see you
tomorrow Emily." says David as he smiles and looks directly at her.
"I'm afraid that Emily may not be coming to the park for much longer
David as her doctors are recommending procedures that would make her bed
bound for most of the time," stated her mum sadly.
I then watched as David leant over and Kissed Emily on the forehead.
Emily and her mum then set off up the hill towards the old library whilst
David sat back down, he just sat and watched as the little girl's
wheelchair left him.
I needed a clearer view so I dropped to the ground and headed over
towards David's seat, hopping up next to him I start to purr, he notices
me and looks down, to my complete surprise I notice a tear had run down
his face and stained its path clean, I sit on the seat next to him on his
bench and he absent mindedly reaches out to stroke my fur.
if I were still human I would have smiled at this point as the physical
contact between the two of us now afforded me the opportunity to look
into his mind.
'Ugh what a mess of conflicting emotions and self-loathing' I think to
myself as I attempt to wade through the noise and confusion in his mind
as I access his memories.
As I delve deeper Pictures form in my mind as I sift through his memories
and I see through his eyes himself as a teen, he's playing in woods with
a girl, she looks to be roughly Emily's age if not a little younger.
The image becomes clearer as I filter out more noise from David's
troubled mind.
David is now chasing the young girl up the hill of a woodland path she's
giggling and laughing as she runs from him, eventually as they reach the
top of the hill the trees clear and a large grassed area comes into view
with a boating lake and children's playground, the young girl sprints
towards the playground and reaches one of the many swings, she sits on
the wooden seat suspended by two chains from an overhead beam.
"Come on slowcoach." she shouts as her bare legs dangle over the seat of
the swing.
"Give me a push big brother."
David starts to push his sister on the swing he is very happy.
I delve even deeper into David's memory.
David is now standing with his sister in what looks to be a very nice and
modern kitchen for its time, he's pouring two glasses of fizzy lemonade
from a glass bottle.
"So big brother will you still come home to see me in the holidays?"
"Of course I will Maggs and I'm only going to be in halls for the first
year after that I may just commute."
Maggs smiles at her big brother she looks so proud of him.
"Will I have to call you Dr David when you get your degree then?"
"No silly it will take a long time before I qualify as a doctor but you
can always call me what you want little sis."
Daniel passes his sister a glass of lemonade she takes it from him but
whilst carrying it towards the dining table the glass tumbler slips from
her hand and smashes on the tiled floor of the kitchen.
"Whoopsie, I've got butterfingers today haven't I?"
I start to have a bad feeling as to why is this memory is so implanted in
David's mind, I compose myself and delve further into his troubled and
confused memories. It's now some time around Christmas as I notice that
some of the gardens have decorations in them as David walks along his
parents' street. 'David must be coming home from university' I think to
myself
He is now standing by the front door, I watch as he puts the key into the
door lock he opens the door and walks in then as he closes the door
behind him his parents rush out from the living room to see him and greet
him but not his sister.
"Where is Maggs Dad, you said she'd been unwell is she okay?" There was a
pause before David's father finally answered.
"Magdalene didn't want you worry son but she's deteriorated quite some
since your last visit."
Just then He noticed his sister she was just coming out of the living
room she was moving slowly and was using a walking stick, she seemed very
happy to see her big brother, David rushed over to her, picked her up and
hugged her tightly.
David's next memories start to become jumbled and darker and convinced
that he could help his sister he started to study almost every waking
second his focus was on Neurodegenerative disorders.
I then see several snippets of memory from visits home, Maggs body was
now failing fast, firstly she had to use a walker to get about and then a
wheelchair and then on David's final visit home his sister was confined
to a hospital bed with a machine breathing for her, I finally pull out
from David's mind as I see through his eyes him standing looking down as
a small coffin that is slowly being lowered into a grave.
David is looking at me now quizzically.
"If I didn't know better cat I would swear that you were crying," he said
to me as he gently stroked my fur.
'Shit this new body is taking some getting used to,' I think to myself.
David looks around as though he has heard something, I brush against him
once more and quickly delve into his mind once more.
I see in the final year of his degree his grades plummet, his first
flirtation with drugs and then him being asked politely to leave
University. I watch as David starts to steal money and items from his
parents to feed his developing drug habit and then his desperate father
reluctantly and apologetically throwing him out of their home as his
mother stands by her husband crying, then his slow decline into petty
crime, addiction and alcoholism.
'High street outside of T K Max meet with me.'
'Ow, ow that hurt, you didn't have to shout so loud,' I think as I'm
quickly wrenched back into to the real world, David is now busy rolling a
cigarette so I slip off the bench and head towards the High St.
Being so small and agile has its advantages and also its disadvantages as
I try to avoid being trodden on as I approach Martha.
Martha is a beautiful and statuesque woman, today she is dressed all in
black and is wearing a large dark floppy sun hat to protect her pale skin
from the sunshine she looks totally out of place here but no-one notices,
I brush against her lovely stockinged legs and heels as I pass by her, oh
how I miss wearing beautiful clothing, but for now hey-ho this is my lot.
I leap up onto the wall beside Martha.
"Well?"
'Well what?' I enquire as I look up at her
"What do you think of him?"
'personally, I think it may be a little too late to save him from his
self-destructive nature but...'
"But what Diana?" interrupted Martha.
'He seems to become almost normal when he's confronted by an unfortunate
young girl in a wheelchair, I believe she reminds him of his deceased
sister and he seems to really care about her.'
"Good then we'll start with her, he has the gift we just need to make
sure that he uses it correctly."
'Are you sure about him Martha?'
Martha looked down on me.
"The decision was not mine Diana, it came from the Council, he is your
responsibility for now at least."
'Thank you for your confidence in me Martha I will do my best I promise.'
Martha then picks me up and kisses me on the lips and then hugs me to her
chest.
"I miss you so much Diana."
She then lowers me to the ground and slowly walks away from me, I guard
my mind before thinking 'I miss you too my love.'
As you may already have guessed I am a cat, I haven't always been a cat
however as until three months ago I was a very happy and contented four
hundred and forty-seven-year-old witch, oh I know what you are thinking,
ugly woman with hooked nose, pointy hat that flies around on a
broomstick... wrong!
I was at the time of my untimely death working in local government as a
clerk in the housing department and I loved my job, it was whilst waiting
for the bus one very pleasant spring evening after shopping at my local
supermarket that I was hit by a runaway car and killed, the driver of the
car had suffered a stroke at the wheel and lost control.
As I lay broken on the pavement I did the only thing I could to survive
and transferred my essence over to a passing ginger tabby cat after she
had kindly offered me her body, I then watched from the shadows as my
body died whilst watched over by horrified onlookers who stood by and did
absolutely nothing to save me.
The only person that even attempted to save me was a middle aged homeless
alcoholic drug addict who I now know to be called David.
Unfortunately, my body was too badly damaged by the accident for even the
strongest of healing magic to cure so I am now stuck inside my small
furry prison until I can find and inhabit another suitable body.
Meanwhile I have been given a job to do by the council.
David has great potential to do good in the world, unfortunately he also
has the potential to do great evil, he is currently not aware of his
powers and as such they are dormant, this is a really good thing as he is
currently a very angry and embittered youngish man. 'Oh well no rest for
the non-wicked'
Chapter 2 David Starts to Hear Voices.
I find David once more wandering the local high street harassing local
shoppers asking, "Money for a cup of tea mate." 'Original' I think to
myself as I watch him from the relative safety of a yard wall.
'Oh well may as well get started.' I drop the ground and start to walk
alongside him, 'This is going to be tricky' I think as I start to
concentrate on influencing David's thoughts.
"Money for a cuppa mate?" he asks.
"Money for a cuppa m,m, M, M, Money for some food for my pet cat please?"
He looks a little surprised at himself at saying something different but
continues.
I walk alongside David and look up at the passers-by and try to look
cute.
"Excuse me could you spare a little to help me feed my cat please."
A young woman and her small daughter stop and give David a two-pound coin
"Oh, thank you, thank you," David says unaware that I am influencing his
mind.
I stay with David for half an hour longer directing his thoughts whilst
trying to make some sense of his beautiful but disjointed mind.
In the end David ends up with nearly twelve pounds in loose change, he is
very pleased with himself and decides to treat himself to an extra fix
from his dealer.
'Oh no you don't.' I then use my limited powers to vibrate the balance
sections of his inner ears violently causing a wave of nausea and
sickness so powerful it almost cripples him, David rushes over to the
kerb and vomits violently into the drain.
I concentrate once more. 'A nice piece of fish would be lovely today.'
David wipes his mouth with the sleeve of his threadbare jumper.
"Hmm, I think I'll treat myself to a nice bit of fish."
David then heads over to the fishmonger at the end of the high St and
gets two very nice pieces of smoked haddock.
I follow David home to the squat that he shares with several other
people.
I look up at him as he enters the front door.
"Come on in then," he says, I enter the filthy squat and follow him into
the even worse kitchen.
David finds two dirty plates and unwraps the smoked fish but before he
can put the fish on the plates I mentally suggest that he washes the
plates first.
David grills his fish but he gives me mine cold, I enjoy it immensely.
I can now see David looking at me wondering why he's just shared his
evening meal with a stray Ginger tabby cat.
Smiling he says to himself "You're losing it Dave, it must have been some
bad junk." he then starts to scratch his balls through his trousers.
'Eww how uncouth.'
David's house mates totally ignore me as he heads up to his bedroom, I
follow two or three steps behind, he enters his room and flops onto an
old mattress lying on the bare floorboards of his room, he then opens his
little tobacco pouch and starts to roll himself a cigarette.
'Filthy habit.'
"Uh." Says David as he looks around his room.
Oops better turn down the volume, it appears that David is more sensitive
than I thought. I curl up beside his mattress as he smokes. Soon though
David falls asleep, I then move onto his mattress with him, his reliance
on both drugs and alcohol is great but in order to help him I am going to
have to temporarily lessen his addiction and need for a fix so I start to
add what in modern terms would be called negative feedback loops within
his mind to try and lessen his need to dampen his bad memories, I then do
a little housekeeping and ordering in his mind before making him more
accepting of my presence.
When David wakes the next morning, I am just returning from my morning
toilet in the tiny front garden.
"Oh, hello there cat I thought you would be gone by now."
I move over to his side and start to rub myself against him and purr
gently.
David absent-mindedly starts to stroke my fur, I can see that he is in
withdrawal now and will need a fix soon but I'm determined that I will
delay him just a little longer before he gets it.
Just over an hour later David is once again slumped against several black
plastic bin bags in a back lane behind the shops whilst he enjoys what
will be a very short high.
I sit quietly by his side whilst he rolls his eyes and sighs.
'I wonder if the Salvation army would let me use their showers.' I
mentally suggest to my stoned charge whilst he lays next to me.
It is just over two hours later that David emerges from the nearest
Salvation army mission clean and shaved with several new items of
clothing and what is even better, he no longer upsets my keen sense of
smell, his gratitude is real as he thanks the young uniformed woman at
the front door.
David now heads himself towards the park, I know why he is heading there
and I follow at his side.
Once at the park David sits down at his usual spot and waits on the
footpath between the old pavilion and the library in the shade of the
tree and whilst watching the old men and women in their whites play bowls
on the green he starts to doze.
'Good this will give me the opportunity to hopefully have a chat with
Emily if she turns up' I think to myself. Sitting guard by my dozing
friend I first notice Emily's mum and then Emily who turn into this
section of the park through a very large open wrought iron gate near to
the old pavilion a second or two later, I drop down from the bench and
stroll over to both Emily and her mum, it is obvious from even several
metres away that Emily is not happy as her mind is literally screaming
out to be heard.
'Hello Emily.'
The noise stops dead for a second then continues.
'Hello Emily, can you hear me?"
'Of course I can hear you, but I can't speak, can I? Stupid person.'
'You're speaking to me Emily and I can hear you,'
'Ha, oh great I'm going loony too, oh that's just brilliant.'
'Oh Emily you are not going loony I promise you, I'm speaking to your
mind directly.'
'What! Really? but I can't see you, where are you?'
'I'm walking alongside your wheelchair with your mum.'
'You must be a really short person then."
'Ha yes I am, at the moment I'm a cat but until recently I was a witch.'
'Really?' Emily replied with interest.
'Yes really, look I know that you don't believe me and you think you're
going a bit mad but please just hear me out, I am trying to help David
the drunk.'
'Oh, I really like him, he still looks at me and smiles, he doesn't
pretend I'm not there.'
'Yes Emily, he's a very special person, unfortunately he doesn't know it
yet,'
'So how are you going to help David then cat person?'
'Well that is where you come in Emily, I want him to help you to get
better,' After a long pause Emily finally spoke.
'I was told by my mummy that there is no cure for my illness, that it was
incurable.'
'It is incurable Emily, by medicine that is but if we use a lot of very
powerful magic and ask your body nicely to stop misbehaving itself I
promise that you will get better,'
'Honestly?'
'Honestly, Witches honour.'
'Is that really a thing?' asks Emily
"It's my promise but you must swear to me that you will never talk of
your recovery to anyone ever Emily,'
'I promise cat person.'
'Good, thank you, I will speak to you again soon but first I'm going to
pop into your mum's mind and get her to cancel that nasty medical
procedure the doctors want to do to you next week.'
'Byee cat person,' Then I directed my attention to Emily's mum Clara, her
mind was tidy warm and ordered, she really did not want her daughter to
have the feeding and breathing tubes fitted to her daughter so it was
easy to modify her thoughts to refuse the procedures.
Returning to David I hopped up onto the bench and started to meow loudly.
"Uh, oh it's just you, I'm surprised you're still here." I sit and start
to purr contentedly causing him to start and stroke my fur.
I entered David's mind once more and without him noticing started to give
him subtle hints.
Emily and her mum approached Daniel.
"Hello Daniel, you look err, cleaner today." commented Mrs Smart.
"Oh, I had a Shower today, Thought I'd show a bit of effort." Mrs Smart
smiled at David.
"And how are you today Emily?" Emily produced a few grunts.
"I know, a little flower for a beautiful young lady."
David left Emily in her wheelchair and returned a few seconds later with
a buttercup and placed it in the strap buttonhole of her pinafore dress,
he then touched her hand very gently.
It was in the split second that their skin touched that I suggested to
his subconscious mind.
'look deeply, look deeply at Emily.'
David wasn't even really conscious of what I was asking him to do.
'Analyse her condition what do you see?"
'Nothing,' said a voice from deep within David's subconscious.
'Look harder, look for what's wrong with Emily.'
I hoped that this would not take too long to perform as in my present
body my powers were nowhere near as strong as they used to be.
'Motor functions impaired, speech impaired, Motor neuron disease maybe,
no no, look deeper, Ohhh....'
Finally a breakthrough, David was actually seeing her condition in his
own mind, he was visualising it and long dormant memories of long nights
of research came back to him.
'The cerebellum, it's... it's Spinocerebellar ataxia, that's really
rare.' I then quickly asked, 'So what are you going to do about it then?'
'I, I don't understand, it's incurable.'
'Look closer look at the cells in Emily's cerebellum, what do you see?."
"Neurons, motor neurons they're dying, they are being attacked by
something, It's... I don't understand. Wait this is a genetic disease
it's inherited."
'Well done David, now fix it.'
'But how?.'
'Start with the cause for now to stop any further damage.'
'Cause... oh think.... it's caused by inherited gene mutations.' Good,
David's research on his own sister's condition and his medical training
was now finally being useful to him.
'Right, now highlight the mutations globally in your mind and remove
them, now think really hard.'
'Ohhhh, this is incredible I can see them they have changed colour, it's
like I've highlighted them.'
'Now tell them to go.'
'What! just tell them?'
'Yes, but hurry.' I was weakening now and wouldn't be able to hold my
focus much longer, I could also hear a dog barking.
'You lot go, you're not wanted here Go... Oh god They have, they have
just gone! Emily's DNA is now clear of both the mutant genes and
proteins.'
'G,.. good now pull back," I suggested urgently.
David sat back onto his seat, for in the real world only a split second
had passed but both David and I were now exhausted and he didn't even
know why.
"I might see you tomorrow David." said Emily's mum, as she continued on
her way oblivious to the epic battle David had just waged inside Emily's
small and twisted body. Emily was still very poorly though as countless
numbers of her brain's motor cells had been destroyed over the last
couple of years as her disease had progressed unchecked, this however was
a job for future times.
'We'll see you in a couple of days Emily.'
'Byeee, cat person,' thought Emily, she sounded quite cheerful now but I
knew that in a few minutes she may not be, but in my weakened state there
was nothing I could do about that now.
I watched as the wheelchair whirred up the hill with Emily's mother by
its side and then yawned and stretched before resting on the seat, David
however was now throwing up into the flower bed, as an unfortunate side
effect of taking Emily's disease from her.
Chapter 3 I'm Losing My Marbles.
David lay back against the park bench he was exhausted and confused, he
was also developing a bright red angry rash on his neck as a result of
taking on board some of Emily's illness, this wouldn't become a problem
as he would just pass the foreign cells in a few hours. The rash just
being an allergic response.
Sunshine is a wonderful thing and as it warmed my fur I quickly started
to recover whilst David snored away beside me, my peace only being
interrupted by a yappy little dog with delusions of being a great Dane.
'Go away little dog before you annoy me.'
"yap, yap, yap yap," continued the small hairy rat like creature.
'Yawn this is getting boring,' I thought to myself as I meowed.
the little dog yelped one last time and ran away onto the bowling green,
although I had just meowed like a cat, the projected image the dog had
received was of a large and angry lion roaring, I then snuggled back
against David and started to doze once more.
After some time David woke and got up from his seat, I noticed as I
arched my back and stretched that his rash was already fading.
'Good, next mission is some healthy food and more rest,' I needed to
clean David up both inside and out as he would be needing a clean and
healthy mind and body over the next few months.
I really hated David begging for money but until I could get him
employment or into more suitable accommodation it was the only way of
feeding the both of us.
David went into the local supermarket as I waited outside sunning myself,
when he returned with his carrier bag of food we walked together back
towards his squat, I was happy that he had now accepted me as his pet and
he seemed to appreciate my company, I needed him to have a clearer mind
before I introduced myself to him though.
Back at the squat David stored his groceries in his room and went down
stairs to try and find a vacuum cleaner, after implanting the suggestion
in his head, a little naughty I know but his room was filthy and my nose
is close to the floor now and really sensitive to dust.
After David had cleaned his room and dusted he went down stairs with his
food and grilled himself two cheap chops, I then wondered what he was
going to give me to eat.
'Ugh kitty chunks,' I thought as he produced a saucer with meaty cubes
covered in gravy but surprisingly they actually tasted a lot better than
they looked, I ate my food from a bowl on the lino whilst David sat at
the table and ate his chops.
Once finished I hopped up onto the table and sat watching him whilst
absent-mindedly cleaning my paws with my tongue Ugh.
David looked at me quizzically.
"Sometimes cat, just sometimes I could swear that you understand every
word I say."
"Meow," I reply.
Later that evening a fight breaks out downstairs between two of the
squats more volatile occupants and the police are called by 'concerned
neighbours' because of the noise. Several of the occupants of the squat
are arrested, David is unaware of this as I'd placed him in a deep sleep,
I'd also charmed his bedroom door so that the police storming around the
squat only saw a continuous wall of wallpaper on the landing outside his
room.
The very next morning I decided that David needed to move somewhere
quieter and more suitable for his convalescence and I needed somewhere
where my nerves wouldn't be in tatters at the end of the night and I knew
of just the place.
At breakfast as David was tucking into boiled eggs, I suggested to his
subconscious mind that he should start to look for somewhere more
suitable to live.
"You know something cat, I think that now I have a pet I should start and
look for somewhere else to live possibly find vacant premises down by the
river, what do you think?"
I brush myself against his jeans leg and purred contentedly.
"Ha, look at me I must be losing my marbles talking to a cat, Sheesh as
if he understands me."
'She, I'm a she, idiot some doctor you would have made!'
"I wonder what I should call you?"
'Not Garfield, please not Garfield.'
"I know, Garfield, I'll call you Garfield."
'Sigh.'
Chapter 4 A Little Cottage Down by The River.
As we walked together heading down towards the river with Daniel carrying
all of his worldly possessions in three tatty old carrier bags and a
rucksack I wonder if he's even aware that he has been heroin free for
just under a day, I am hoping that I won't have to suppress his
withdrawal for too much longer as the concentration required really tires
me out.
After a little while we stop by a row of individual little cottages by a
small river in a secluded and heavily wooded dene area only five minutes
from the local shops, I hop onto the wall of the leftmost cottage and
drop into the garden.
Daniel follows, I can see by his expression that he's not impressed by
what he sees but as he will come to learn in time that eyes can easily be
deceived, I start to nudge the flower pot by the front door with my paw
and nose until I expose a door key and then mention to my home that David
is now welcome.
Magical burglar alarms are a lot more proactive than the conventional
type and I really did not want David running from his new home screaming
in terror on his first visit.
As we entered I could hear David gasp as he looked at the modern spacious
and comfortable home within.
This of course is my home, or to be more precise my old home and I have
lived here rather comfortably for the last 95 years. David drops his bags
on the carpet and slumps onto my leather settee, he then turns on the TV
and quickly finds a football match to watch.
'OH NO YOU DON'T MATEY, TURN THAT TV OFF.'
"Uh what, w, who said that?" says David who is now standing up and
looking frantically for the source of the voice.
'I did.'
David starts to look around my living room so I hop up onto the coffee
table.
'On the table, look down, I'm down here.' David looks down at me sitting
on the coffee table.
"No."
'I'm afraid so David and no you are not losing your marbles'
"But you are just a cat."
'News flash David, I'm not just a cat, I'm a cat with a human's
consciousness in it'
David started to shake his head and for some reason he started nipping
his arm.
'Stop it David you'll hurt yourself.'
"But this can't be real Garfield, I'm probably dreaming, yes that's it.
Or... my mind has finally gone and I've become delusional, oh crap my
mind has gone." I sit patiently whilst he started to panic and pace
around my living room.
'David, when you are ready to listen and have stopped panicking wake me
up'.' I stretch a little and then curl up on the Radio Times.
As I lie with my eyes closed I can hear David still pacing and talking to
himself, finally I hear.
"Ahem, excuse me Garfield, I've brought you a saucer of milk."
I stretch across the table and yawn a little.
'A nice gesture David but since I became a cat I've found that I'm
lactose intolerant, I wouldn't mind a little water though.'
David returned from the kitchen a short while later with a bowl of water
that I proceeded to lap at.
David had now sat on the sofa and was looking at me intently, I looked up
at him.
'What?' He smiled.
"It's just that I can't believe this is happening, Can I ask you a
question?"
'Of course.'
"How are you talking, I can't see your lips moving is it some kind of
telepathy?"
'Magic, it's magic we have linked minds so instead of your ears hearing
my voice you are hearing me in your head instead and now I'm home if I
concentrate really hard I should be able to project my human form to you
too,' David gasped as I projected an image of my old self directly into
the visual cortex of his brain. David then quickly turned away and said,
"Err."
'What now?'
"You're naked."
'Oops sorry,' I hadn't worn clothing for a while and had forgotten to
project a clothed imaged so concentrating a little harder I said, "How
about now?"
"Oh wow, you're beautiful but I thought you would look really old?"
"I am I just took really good care of myself."
"I can hear you properly now too I can see your mouth moving and
everything." I projected myself sitting down opposite him.
"David, we need to talk and I need you to really concentrate on what I'm
about to tell you." he nodded, as I was now at my own home I would be
able to hold my image indefinitely as I was able to focus my mind much
better here.
"Firstly, you are not losing your mind you are perfectly sane, despite
your many years of substance and alcohol abuse. Secondly I have been
tasked with the job of easing your transition."
"Transition?"
"Yes David. Transition you are about to become a witch."
"A witch? surely you mean a wizard." I shook my head and tried to
explain.
"No David you will become a witch, if you were to become a wizard, things
would almost certainly not go too well for you."
"I' I don't understand, how can I become a witch aren't witches
customarily women?" I nodded.
"Yes usually but this is the first time I have heard of an older man to
be chosen by the council, they must have a good reason and I'm not going
to argue with them."
"So this could all be some type of huge clerical error then?"
"Could be David but I doubt it." David started to scratch his head.
"How do I go about learning magic then, do I need to go to magic school
or something?"
"Like Hogwarts you mean?"
"Err well yes."
"I'm sorry to have to tell you this David but there is no such place,
yours will be on the job training and I am to be your mentor, at least to
start with, I will teach you the basics of magic and make sure that you
learn not to draw attention to yourself or your powers."
"Oh so I'll be sort of like a Sorceresses apprentice then and how long
will my training take?"
"Hmm with my guidance probably about a year or two for the basics but to
master the subject properly probably two or three."
"Years?"
"Hundred years young man."
"Ah." I stopped our conversation there and changed the subject
"Oh, and by the way my name is Diana so you can stop calling me
Garfield."
"So, what now then, do I get a lesson or something?"
"No not yet I think shopping would be in order, we need to stock up the
fridge and freezer, oh and then you can do a little DIY for me, as I'm
going to need a cat flap."
Chapter 5 I'm Not Talking to You.
David and I went shopping after we'd been to the cash point. On returning
he restocked the fridge and freezer he then even managed to cook himself
a passable evening meal.
David slept very well that evening in my bed with me curled up beside him
and the next morning when he awoke I'd already made him his breakfast and
was sitting waiting for him as he entered the dining room.
"How?" he asked as he looked at the set table with a full English
breakfast sitting in front of him.
"Magic of course," I replied, in reality I'd just manipulated the spaces
between objects until I could move them, it took a lot of concentration
but with the added power within the confines my house I was able to
accomplish it easily.
David was looking much better today and I even detected a little colour
in his pale complexion, he sat down and seemed to really enjoy his
breakfast whilst watching my image.
"You are really beautiful Diana," he commented.
"Was, I was quite pretty yes but sadly I'm just an image now."
"So can you get your body back then?"
"Alas no as it was cremated."
"So are you stuck as a cat forever?" I smiled
"No not forever but the conditions need to be correct for my return, I
can't return until the conditions are perfect." David thought for a
second then put down his fork and looked at me angrily.
"Oh, I see, it's me isn't it you are going to take over my body using
some type of black magic ritual and put me into your cat's body."
"Eww no, why on earth would I want your body, I want mine back or as
close as I can get."
"Oh sorry, I just thought," he quickly apologised.
"I will need to leave this temporary vessel at some point however but
that will hopefully be sometime in the future, today we are going to have
your first conscious lesson in the art of magic."
"Conscious?"
"Yes David conscious, I have already worked with your subconscious and I
have to say it's a lot less argumentative than you. Today you will be
aware of everything that happens whilst it happens be warned though it
may make you feel a little nauseous at first." David was now wiping his
plate clean with a folded slice of bread as though it were an edible
sponge and not really paying much attention to me anymore but as soon as
he'd finished I asked him to go and get dressed.
It was late morning when we arrived in the park and David sat down at his
usual seat opposite the bowling greens.
"Okay then Diana what are we doing here?"
'Waiting for Emily, you are going to practice magic on her.'
"WHAT! No not Emily, hasn't she suffered enough Diana?"
'Calm down David we aren't going to hurt her, just the opposite we are
helping her.'
"But how, the damage to her body is irreversible."
'To conventional science yes but to you and I, no. We have already
rectified the genetic defect that caused her illness.'
"Diana if that is indeed the case then her illness has just been stopped,
the damage has already been done and there is no way to regrow motor
neurons or to replace the myelin sheath surrounding the nerve cells."
'Oh really, So tell me this, how do these things grow in the first place
then?'
"They just do, the mechanisms are not fully understood but..."
'I'm assuming that we are talking stem cells here are we David?'
"Yes But."
'And where are stem cells found?'
"Lots of places in the body, blood, bone marrow, brain, liver..."
'Ah good the brain that's handy, so if we were to ask these stem cells
really nicely to multiply and replace the damaged motor neurons and other
broken stuff in Emily's brain would that cure her?'
"I, Err, I, I just don't know, I mean even if the damage was repaired her
muscles will have wasted and her bones may have become twisted, she would
need months possibly years of physical therapy to be free of her
wheelchair." I brushed against David and sat by his side.
'And what would be the alternative for Emily, David?'
"To be confined to her wheelchair or bed for the rest of her life it
would be a horrible existence, she would be better off dead." I looked up
to see tears in David's eyes I'd upset him, I felt a little guilty.
'Here comes Emily now with her mum should we ask her?'
"I suppose."
'Just act normally David and show Emily your usual kindness I'll lead.'
A few seconds later Emily wheeled up to us and her wheelchair stopped.
"Hello David, you are looking much better today, almost handsome with
that shaved face and your hair combed."
"Hello Mrs Smart, Hello Emily I like your dungarees."
Emily seemed a little agitated so I quickly entered her mind whilst David
was talking.
'Emily, hello do you remember me?'
'I'm not talking to you,' she replied angrily.
'Oh, why ever not?'
'Because.'
'Are you upset with me Emily?'
'Yes, I felt really sick after you promised you'd help me'
'Oh Emily, I'm sorry but that was just the nastiness leaving your body,
how do you feel today?'
'Okay I suppose but I don't want to feel sick again it was horrible.'
'Oh, come on Emily, David is with me today would you like to talk with
him?'
'S'pose,' using my own mind as a conduit I introduced Emily to David.
'Oh Err hello can you hear me Emily?' asked David
'Hello David.'
'Oh gosh, it really works hello Emily I can hear you.'
'The cat person says that you can help me David but I don't believe her,
she made me feel ill the other day.'
'Oh, was it really nasty?'
'It was horrible I felt funny in the head and I thought I was going to
throw up.'
'I'm sorry Emily but that is called nausea'
'I didn't like it.'
'I know that it was really unpleasant the other day Emily but today may I
try something a little different please?'
'What?'
'As we have stopped your body hurting itself now, I want to try and get
it to start repairing itself.'
'Will it make me feel ill again David?' David paused before answering
'Emily I honestly don't know but I really do want to help you I promise.'
'Okay then.'
'Thank you, Emily you are a really brave girl.'
'Err David?'
'Yes Emily.'
'Can you try and make my mouth work first please, I really miss being
able to talk?'
'I'll see what I can do.' I stopped our communication with Emily at this
point and guided David once more into Emily's weak body.
'Visualise what you want to happen David, concentrate really hard.'
'I'm trying Diana but I don't know what I'm looking for.'
'Visualise in your mind that you are ordering cells to repair and replace
the damaged nerve cells instruct them on what to do.' I could feel the
power of David's thoughts build, even though I was only being used as a
conduit I could feel the potential in David. Eventually I sensed movement
within Emily as fresh unallocated stem cells started to reconfigure
themselves to their new purpose and slowly headed to the correct
destination.
'Enough David we need to leave now and let Emily's body start to
recover.'
'Just a little more Diana.'
'NO LEAVE NOW.' I cut off the connection and we both returned to the real
world, fortunately only moments had passed and Emily's mum was still
standing by her completely unaware of what was happening to her daughter.
'David, get Emily a flower and try to act normally.' I instructed, this
he did and after Emily and her mum had headed off once more towards the
library David ran into the bushes, I could hear him vomiting and retching
for several minutes.
Chapter 6 The Day Trip.
David was very quiet on the walk back to my cottage by the river and
looked very pale and weak. On our return, I insisted that he rested
whilst I busied myself ordering supplies and more shopping on the
internet.
David slept until dawn the next morning and when he entered the dining
area for breakfast I could tell that he was refreshed.
"Good morning David, just cereal this morning I'm afraid, sorry about
yesterday, it must have been quite intense for you." David sat and looked
at my Avatar.
"It was Diana but I had never realised before how beautiful it could be
even inside a diseased body, then when you manipulated those stem cells."
"We manipulated them David, we did it together." I didn't tell him that I
was only acting as a conduit for his power and in reality, he had done
almost all of the work, David poured milk onto his cereal and started to
eat.
"What are we doing today Diana, are we going to help Emily once more?"
"No, not for a few days, we'll leave her body for a little while to heal
by itself, rushing things will draw attention to her condition."
"Ha, I think that the fact she's starting to recover from an incurable
condition will draw attention to her Diana." He was correct of course but
as long as we took things slowly I figured that it would be okay.
David was dressed in jeans old leather brogues and an old blue hooded
sweatshirt as we left the cottage today for what I hoped would just be a
day trip, we walked along the footpath by the river and as I pointed out
to him the wildlife, he seemed to be politely interested.
After a while we boarded a bus and once in town we then boarded a train
towards the Scottish border.
I was unusually hesitant as we sped up the north-east coast and as we
passed into Scotland David must have sensed it as he let me onto his lap
and stroked me until we stopped at the small station in North Berwick.
Once off the train our first stop was the large hill called North Berwick
Law, it is a large plug of volcanic rock to the south of the small
Fishing village of North Berwick.
"Wow what a view," commented David once we'd got to the viewpoint at the
top
'Yes it is, and it's hardly changed in many many years, I lived near here
once a long time ago.'
"Is that why you brought me here Diana, to reminisce?"
'Partly yes but also to gauge something.'
"Tell me more?"
'Not yet David, all in good time if we hurry we should just beat the rush
in the caf?.' David followed me back down into the village and as we
entered an old caf? I felt a very old and very familiar wave of power
wash over me, I leapt up onto a chair by an empty table and David sat
opposite.
After two or three minutes I heard, "DIANA, I just can't believe it."
Entering from the kitchen area was a young woman who looked to be in her
mid-twenties, she came over to me and picked me up then hugged me
tightly.
"I'd heard about your accident, I'm so sorry."
'It's okay Morag I'm sorry for not visiting sooner, how long has it
been?'
"Oh only ninety or so years but who's counting." Morag then turned
towards David and frowned.
"And this is him, is it?"
'Yes, his name is David and the council believe that he has great
potential.'
"Oh they do do they and what do you think?"
'Not sure yet Morag I was hoping to take him to the old Kirk to see how
he copes.'
"I'll go with you Diana the echoes can be really strong there sometimes
and they've been acting up something rotten recently for some reason but
first lunch."
Morag vanished into the back once more and returned with a meal for David
and fish for me, it was delicious.
Just as we were finishing David asked.
"A Kirk That's a church, isn't it?"
'Yes it is. but this Kirk has great significance to the people of the
village as it lies where several lines of earth energy cross we once used
this point to focus our energies.' "Do you not use it any more, did
something happen to it?"
'I, it's a long...'
"ENOUGH." Interrupted Morag as she pulled on a long old waxed jacket "I
want to see how this young man responds."
'Very well, if you are ready now David?' I asked as I hopped off my chair
and waited.
David Morag and I then headed down towards the harbour and towards the
old Kirk, as we approached David commented, "Is that it?"
'Yes David, that is all that's left of the Kirk, a huge portion of it
fell into the sea a long time ago now all that is really left are the
foundations and the porch'
"Okay then so why am I here?" Asked David impatiently, I hesitated before
answering as I could see the blackness eagerly awaiting him by the green.
'All we require of you David is to walk through the porch and as far as
you can into the green within the ruins, stop and then return when it
becomes too much for you to bear.'
"That's it, we've come all of this way just to do that?"
'Yes David, but I must warn you that both evil and temptation awaits you
there, do not succumb to either or they will attempt to consume you,'
David was now starting to look worried and hesitantly headed away from us
towards the porch.
'David,' he stopped, turned and asked.
"Yes?"
'Good luck.'
Chapter 7 The Darkness and The Voice. (David.)
This is ridiculous, I'm in a small fishing village in Scotland and I've
just been ordered by a Ginger tabby cat to walk to the centre of the
green where an old church once stood turn and return but as this is no
stranger a request than some of the other things that have happened to me
over the last few days so I leave my new feline friend Diana and the
woman from the caf? behind me and head towards the old stone porch that
was once the entry to the large-ish medieval church, I turn around just
before I enter the old stone building and look for Diana only to find
that she has now been joined by several young and not so young women,
they are all looking at me.
As I enter the porch and walk through it I start to feel an unusual sense
of foreboding and as I come out into the green where the main church once
stood I immediately start to feel sick to the pit of my stomach.
I look around once more and see to the North the calm blue sea and behind
me I can still see Diana and Morag, the other women have now been joined
by even more and have spread out and are forming a large semi-circle
around the Southern perimeter walls of the old Church, on the green
children are playing and there are several adults sitting or lying on the
short grass enjoying the sun.
'Well this is easy,' I think to myself as I slowly walk across the short-
cropped grass towards the sea.
Then I notice an unusual small dark grey cloud forming in the clear blue
sky above me, it starts to expand and darken quickly as I continue my
slow walk across the short grass.
The sea is now darkening also and out of nowhere a cold wind has
developed coming straight in from the sea to the North. I'm now becoming
very nervous and am considering turning back, it is then that I hear a
familiar voice deep within my head.
'Keep your nerve David, you can do this I have faith in you.'
It's Diana it almost sounds as if she is pleading for me to continue, I
have no reason not to doubt her so I continue to move surprisingly slowly
forward with the now bone chilling wind in my face.
As I reach the centre of the green I can no longer see the grass below me
as it had now somehow been replaced with rough stone slabs, I can still
however see the sea and it has become very rough, it's as I watch the
waves breaking against the headland that the lightning starts above me
and then the rain, I look back to see that all of the women surrounding
the ruins are now holding hands in a long chain and appear to have become
semi-transparent.
I feet another very strong wave of nausea hit me almost like a punch to
the stomach but somehow I carry on towards the sea, I now know that I had
to do this but something or someone seems to be trying to stop me, It's
then that I notice long tendrils of blackness snaking along the stone
floor they appear to be emanating from a central point in the floor just
ahead of me, I look to my right and to my left and can see channels of
bright light in the distance flowing like small streams and coming
towards the central point before me but darkening before they reach the
junction and then finally turning black at the junction, there is another
stream intersecting, this one it seemed to come from the sea and head
back out towards the old volcanic plug called North Berwick Law.
"What the hell is this?" I say to myself before dropping to my knees and
started to retch as I'm almost overcome by wave after wave of nausea, one
of the tendrils of blackness reaches out and touches my arm, the tip of
the blackness immediately pulls back from me and starts to glow white as
though it had just been burned, I leap back in pain also and quickly get
to my feet.
Looking around once more I can now see semi-transparent walls rising up
around me and can now only just hear the women outside of the church
chanting, the seaward wall of the church is still missing and I can now
clearly see the rough sea almost boiling with anger as the storm rages
outside, in the distance I can see several small boats struggling to get
to the safety of the harbour.
I stand transfixed as the walls of the church become solid, the blackness
that tried to touch my arm has now surrounded me and is starting to reach
out at me once more, probing me it seems to be looking for a weakness,
then it leaps straight at me like a very large wave of black grease and
attempts to engulf me.
"NO!" I shout as I instinctively hold my hands out to push the blackness
away from me.
The blackness stops dead as if hitting an invisible barrier about a foot
from my hands, I can now sense the women outside of the church, I can
feel their emotions, fear mostly but also hope, all of the women are
concentrating as a single entity on one sole purpose I don't yet know
what that purpose is but I can almost sense that none of the women mean
me any harm.
The blackness now surrounds me completely but can't touch me I appear to
be in a large clear protective bubble of my own making, my head is
however now throbbing as I continue pushing myself and the blackness back
towards its source.
"Davey?"
"Uh."
"Davey it's me Maggs." The blackness parts vertically in front of me to
reveal my little sister my beautiful little sister standing just in front
of me.
"Maggs?"
"Yes Davey, I'm all better now look." She walks towards me and smiles.
"But how, how are you here Maggs?" my head was now throbbing and I was
finding it really hard to concentrate
"They made me better Davey, I'm whole once more."
'It's a trick David, the blackness wants..,' Diana's voice breaks into my
mind but is cut off before she can finish.
"Diana?" Maggs started to frown, then her face darkens and her voice
changes, becoming harsh almost vicious.
"Don't listen to that interfering bitch Davey listen to me I'm your
sister, now give me a hug?" My sister had never talked to me like that
when she was alive, there was something badly wrong here, it was then
that I noticed the blackness dripping off her fingers like dirty engine
oil and her eyes, Maggs eyes were dark and soulless.
"YOU ARE NOT MY SISTER." I then brushed past my sisters' doppelg?nger
pushing her aside with the invisible barrier I'd created and continued my
journey the final few feet towards the source of the blackness.
As I reached the source of the blackness the entity that was
impersonating my sister launched itself at me and managed somehow to
reach into my protective bubble but when it touched me it screamed in
pain as did I, this caused me to lose concentration and the bubble
protecting me from the blackness collapsed causing me to be enveloped by
it.
I could feel my life starting to fade as the blackness began to suffocate
and drain me, I then heard Maggs voice once more it was taunting me,
telling me what a failure I was.
"You were a failure as a boy a failure as a man and you are a failure as
a witch, you couldn't save your beloved sister and now you have condemned
a little girl to a lifetime in a wheelchair, oh maybe we could recruit
her? Yes, Emily can join us, I'm sure she'd do almost anything to be able
to walk again."
No this was not going to happen I was not going to fail again, I summoned
every last inch of strength in my body.
"NO." there was a blinding white light within my dark cocoon, I could
feel an energy building within me, I started to feel warmth spreading
through my limbs, my fingers were tingling I could feel a power growing
within me that had only just been hinted at by my friend Diana.
I started to see visions of a time long ago when this area was just a
grassy peninsula even before the church was built by the monks of
Lindisfarne.
I could see the streams of light intersecting here and women worshipping
here.
Now as the image clears I can see a church being built and then destroyed
and rebuilt, I watch as time marches on at pace and then stops.
I'm now standing unseen inside the church as a woman dressed in what to
modern day standards would be classed as dull colourless rags approaches
the altar, she stops at the point at which the rivers of white intersect,
I watch as she goes down on her knees as if to pray and places something
into the cracks between the flagstones. Immediately the flowing rivers of
light start to dim at the intersection and dark tendrils of what I now
know to be evil start to infect the church and its surrounding area, the
old woman gets up and turns and as she passes me I see her face.
I just can't believe it It's Diana, she looks much older but it is her or
a very close relative.
Time starts to march on once more and the seaward side of the church has
now fallen into the sea and slowly in front of my eyes the entire church
starts to disassemble itself, the women forming the chain outside of the
church are once again visible and look exhausted.
'Whatever was planted here needs to be destroyed' I thought to myself so
I once again force myself to walk two or three more steps to where I
watched the old lady plant the seed, I then bent down and felt for
whatever had been planted so long ago.
"What the?" I say as I pick up a single grain of wheat, it is as black as
night and I can sense that this is the cause of the pollution to the
intersecting streams of white energy.
As soon as I have the grain in my hand the intersection becomes white
once more and starts to get brighter with every millisecond I continue to
stand on it, I know that this grain needs to be destroyed but how?
As I hold the black grain in the palm of my hand I concentrate on it, I
try to imagine it vaporising into its constituent atoms but nothing
happens, it is actually resisting my attempts to destroy it and I notice
that the centre of my palm is starting to go black, I figure that this is
not a good sign and try with renewed effort to destroy the evil seed.
After what seems to me like ages I notice that my entire hand has now
become infected by the seed and has gone black I then watch helplessly as
the blackness slowly travels up to my wrist, then faintly in my head I
hear my sisters voice but not like before cruel and harsh but as I
remember her she's encouraging me.
'C'mon big bro, I know that you can do this, you are much stronger than
you think.'
'Maggs is that really you?'
'Yes, big Bro it is I promise but I can't stay long.'
'I'm so sorry.'
'What on earth for, I had the best big brother in the entire world.'
'But I failed you Maggs I couldn't help you,' I could now feel tears
flowing down my cheeks, as I talked to my long dead little sister.
'Oh Davey you never failed me not once, you are my hero Big bro, always
have been and always will be,' The blackness was now up to my elbow and I
was having trouble stopping it's advance.
'Concentrate Big Bro use the power beneath you, channel it don't fail,
little Emily still needs you,' My sisters voice faded in my head, I once
more dropped to my knees and punched my left fist into the intersection
of light and then focussing on the tiny seed in my other hand,
concentrating and focussing the energy from the intersection I shouted.
"BEGONE" At the top of my voice.
I felt the power surge through my body and the darkness instantly receded
back into the seed, I watched as it started to glow until it became a
blinding point of white light and then it exploded, I seemed to have
somehow sensed that it was about to explode however and somehow managed
to divert all of the energy from the exploding seed straight up into the
air into a twenty-foot-wide column of pure white light... and then
nothing.
I looked around me I was now standing on the green within the ruined
church there were still people sunning themselves on the grass and
children playing on the walls, the sea was calm and the sun was shining,
I looked over at the women still holding hands around the perimeter of
the church some looked shocked and all looked really tired.
Diana was bounding across the grass as fast as her paws would carry her
followed by Morag who was constantly saying "Shit" to herself as she ran.
When Diana reached me I smiled at her.
"I'm sorry but I think I may have failed your test. I, I..." the world
started to fade and become grey as I dropped down onto my knees and then
felt myself being gently lowered down onto the grass.
As I slowly lost consciousness I could hear both Diana and Morag issuing
instructions to the other women telling them to set up a perimeter or
something and to protect me at all costs, I then heard what I assumed to
be fireworks before the blackness of unconsciousness finally overcame me.
Chapter 8 A New Day for David.
Seagulls I could hear seagulls as I woke up and I felt very comfortable
indeed, I opened my eyes slowly and as my room came into focus I realised
I had no idea where I was. I moved a little and stretched my arms out of
the bed then yawned and the sleeve of my pyjamas slid down my arm as I
did so.
Pulling myself up to a seated position on the bed I looked around, I was
in a large very modern but tasteful bedroom sitting on a double bed, the
curtains were drawn but from the light entering around the edges I could
tell that it was light outside, other than this I knew little else of
where I was.
As usual I needed to pee so I shuffled over to the side of the bed and
attempted to get up in order to find the bathroom or toilet,
unfortunately I found to my surprise I couldn't currently support my own
weight and as my legs buckled under me I fell to the floor with a thump.
"Oww," I said to myself as I lay there.
After two or three seconds, I heard someone coming it sounded like they
were running upstairs, they were getting closer, the door to my room
burst open and Morag appeared, she was wearing an apron.
"I'm Sorry I appear to have fallen," I apologised, Morag rushed to my
side and helped me up.
"Were you trying to go to the toilet David?"
"Yes, but my legs gave way, I'm sorry to be a bother."
Morag helped me on to the bed and whilst I sat she produced an old
chamber pot from under the bed.
"Use this, I'll empty it for you afterwards and stop apologising, you
have absolutely nothing to apologise for." Morag stood by as I looked at
the large porcelain pot unsure quite how to use it, she smiled at me
"Yes, it's a bit old fashioned I agree but it is handy, here let me help
you."
Morag then eased my pyjama bottoms off and helped me to squat over the
large pot, I sighed as I finally managed to empty my bladder, she then
produced a tissue and told me to wipe myself dry, this I did but as there
were only a couple of drips I couldn't really see the point, she then
helped me back on with my pyjama bottoms helped me to get comfortable in
bed and opened the curtains.
"How do you feel David?" she asked with a look of genuine interest.
"Weak, very weak."
"I'm not surprised," Morag then brought a selection of magazines over to
me and placed them by my side, "I'm going to get rid of the pot now David
and I'll be back soon with a little soup for you, is chicken okay?"
"Thank you, chicken will be fine." She then left carrying the chamber pot
with her.
As I sat in bed propped up by many pillows I realised that I was wearing
silk pyjamas and they felt great against my skin, I took one of the
magazines and had just started to browse through it when Morag reappeared
with a tray, she placed the tray to the left of me and then sat down.
"Eat up you have a lot of recovering to do."
I take a spoon and dip it into the soup then tentatively taste it, it's
delicious.
"Where's Diana? Is she nearby," I enquire.
Morag smiles weakly at me.
"I'm afraid she's gone back down to Newcastle David to help young Emily
as you are still too weak to travel. Don't worry she'll be back in a
couple of days, she's been worried sick about you as have we all."
"Did I do something wrong Morag when I entered the old church, was it
some kind of test?"
"No, no you didn't do anything wrong David you just weren't supposed to
do all that you did." I broke a little of the buttered bread and dipped
it into my soup.
"Oh." Morag smiled.
