5:34 PM
Throughout the entire work day, Dominic felt energized. He completed
all his modules and testing at a good pace and decided to clock out of
work early. After grabbing a quick bite at the local sandwich shop, he
walked briskly back to the abandoned apartment building. Once again
putting the pin in the keyhole, he entered with ease.
He reached the main computer room where Lady Bullet resided. The
computer was waiting patiently for input. Dominic woke it up and
rhythmically typed his name on the keyboard. "Welcome back Dominic!"
the computer voice said. Almost instantaneously, the tube opened, smoke
filled the room, and the Lady Bullet suit opened up. Dominic took off
his shoes and jacket and stepped right in. The suit felt comfortable to
him now and fit like a glove. The panels closed, his vision returned,
and he was once again Lady Bullet. "Good evening Dominic!" Lady Bullet
said in a cheerful tone.
Dominic replied in an equally cheery tone. "Good evening Lady Bullet! I
thought I'd come in earlier today to get some practice with manual
operation."
Dominic felt a rush of euphoria in his brain. "An excellent suggestion
Dominic," Lady Bullet answered. "There is a designated training ground
not far from here. Are you ready to leave now?"
"Yes ma'am!" Dominic replied.
"Alright Dominic, let me teach you how to fly."
Almost like instinct, Dominic knelt down, raised his fist to the sky,
and shot upwards.
8:40 PM
It had been hours and Dominic had started getting the hang of fighting
as Lady Bullet. His martial arts had been perfected by Lady Bullet's
assistive strength and he had become more agile and swift than he could
normally be. He also learned how to properly use Lady Bullet's
superpowers: her flight, speed, and enhanced vision. "Dominic, the one
crucial rule is duality and mutuality," Lady Bullet emphasized. "When
we work together, when we think together, we achieve our goal."
"Got it," Dominic replied.
Dominic flew to the top of an apartment building, standing on the edge
of the roof. As Lady Bullet, he felt confidence that he had never
experienced before. This confidence would not only help him save
people, but also confidence that would help him face his fear.
Text showed up in Dominic's vision: DISASTER OCCURRENCE. Lady Bullet
looked at the city skyline. A line on the heads-up display (HUD) began
tracing through the buildings and making a path for Dominic.
"Dominic, are you prepared to assist with this occurrence manually?"
Lady Bullet knelt on the ground ready to fly.
"Let's do this."
8:50 PM
Lady Bullet arrived to a burning apartment building. She was hovering
in the air, assessing the situation. She looked at the people on the
ground. Crowds were standing around, looking worried. People were
running out of the building to join the crowd. Lady Bullet looked
around and noticed that there were no firefighters in sight.
A minimap showed up in Dominic's HUD: Time until response arrival:
7:00.
"That's not going to be enough time!" Lady Bullet said out loud.
Lady Bullet looked at the apartment building. "Dominic, I have accessed
the building's records and compared them to the individuals below you.
I will mark the remaining residents in the building."
Three red dots marked various locations in the apartment.
"Great, they're all upper floor," Lady Bullet said. Arms in front of
her, she zoomed into the first window. Inside the room, she found two
children hiding in a closet. "Don't be afraid," she said. "Just take
my hand," The children took her hand and she hugged them close to her.
With another leap, she burst out the window and landed feet first on
the street. The children ran to their parents in relief. "Thank you
Lady Bullet!" the family said.
Lady Bullet turned to them and smiled. "I'm not done yet!" Lady Bullet
leaped into the air again. Two residents left, and they were in
opposite ends of the building.
"Dominic, there is a 64% chance the right side of the building will
collapse within the minute."
Lady Bullet flew into the right side of the building. In the room was
an old lady, crying against the door. Dominic recognized her from the
bus. "Don't worry ma'am," Lady Bullet said. "I've got you, again!" Lady
Bullet picked up the old lady as well as her walker. She walked up to
the window and kicked the adjacent wall. There was now a large hole in
the wall. Lady Bullet jumped down right before the right side collapsed
into flames behind her. Lady Bullet landed gracefully in the street and
laid the old lady down slowly.
Lady Bullet was ready to get the last resident. She jumped into the
room, this time ending up in a bedroom. A man was lying in his bed,
unconscious. Lady Bullet picked him up in her arms. Suddenly, the floor
below her began to collapse. Thinking quickly, Lady Bullet raised a
fist into the air and jumped through a newly made hole in the ceiling.
Hovering higher above the apartment. She watched as top floor of the
building collapsed. On the ground, paramedics and firefighters arrived.
Lady Bullet looked at the resident in her arms. He was regaining
consciousness. Lady Bullet smiled at him. Squinting his eyes, he
reached towards Lady Bullet's face. "T-thank y-y-you Lady..."
He fell back into unconsciousness. Lady Bullet descended back to street
level and dropped the man off on a stretcher. Soon the crowds around
her started clapping and cheering.
Dominic felt good. He was being cheered for.
Lady Bullet smiled and waved at everyone. She once again leaped into
the air and flew off into the night.
9:00 PM
Lady Bullet reached her headquarters. She hovered over the opening
looking out into the city. She had never seen it from this view. It was
beautiful.
"Are you going to land soon Dominic?" Lady Bullet asked.
Dominic's face was perplexed. "I don't know. Is this you or is this
me?"
"What do you mean?" Lady Bullet queried.
"That guy," Dominic answered. "That one I sa- we saved from the fire. I
have this... feeling."
Phone numbers came up on Dominic's HUD. "Records show that this man has
been admitted into the county hospital," Lady Bullet reported. "His
name is Michael Hill."
"Michael huh," Dominic repeated his name. He felt a jolt of energy run
up his body, but he wasn't sure where it came from. He began
contemplating, hesitating, and fighting off feelings that he never felt
before. Were they worth fighting in the first place? After shaking his
head erratically, he said aloud, "See you soon Michael," Lady Bullet
flew off into the night.
Chapter 4
Two Weeks Later - 11:45 AM
Dominic was busily typing at his computer. Everything seemed to be
going perfectly fine. He didn't realize it, but he was perked up, more
than his usual self. His productivity skyrocketed, and other people
took notice of his demeanor. Behind Dominic, Pete was sneaking up
behind him, hands curled up in front of him. Pete suddenly leapt
forward at Dominic's shoulders. "Boo!"
Dominic jumped in his seat, but started laughing hysterically before he
saw who it was. "Pete!" he said heartily. "What's up!?" The two greeted
each other with a complex casual handshake. "Hey Dom! Not much!" Pete
replied. "Saw you updated the build last night! Thanks for the notes!"
"Hey man, anytime." Dominic began running his hair back. He was
honestly flattered.
"Don't work too hard bro," Pete continued. "Or I'm out of a job!"
Dominic replied sarcastically, "Yeah, we wouldn't want that," Pete
playfully punched Dominic's shoulder. "Hey, me and the guys are hitting
the bar tonight! You should come! The big game is tonight."
Dominic began spinning in his seat. "Aw, I'd love to, but I'm really
busy. Maybe another time."
"Aww, what is it this time? Running your little geek club!?"
"Gotta hold up my people. Tell you what, I'll cover tab when I do get
to go. Deal?"
Pete smiled, then gave Dominic a high-five. "Alright bro! I'm holding
that to you!"
Just then, Susan came by with her mail cart. "Hello boys," she
acknowledged.
"Hey Sue," Pete waved at her and walked away. Susan raised an eyebrow
at Pete's sudden departure. She then dropped a few letters on Dominic's
desk. "Look at you Dominic! The big man of the cubicles!"
Dominic chuckled. "Yeah, you know, things just work out."
Susan sat on Dominic's desk. "Did you ever figure out who sent you that
pin the other day?"
Dominic instantly grabbed at his pocket. Fidgeting around swiftly, he
felt around and made sure the pin was still in his pocket. "Uh yeah.
Turns out it was the fanclub. Just forgot to address the envelope,
that's all."
Susan once again raised her eyebrow, this time for Dominic. "Right. You
know, I think I saw Lady Bullet in the park yesterday. She was with
some guy. Did your club bring anything up about that?"
Dominic's mind began flashing back. Indeed, he, as Lady Bullet, was
with a man. Never in a million years would he expect it, but he had
developed feelings for this man. He first thought that it was more of
the suit's influence, but more and more, his mind was convinced that he
was acting with his heart.
Dominic snapped out of his flashback. "Uh yeah. I think they know. We
don't talk about that gossip stuff. You know how she is though. It's
not a big deal."
Susan nodded approvingly. "Well, in my opinion, she has good taste in
men. See you around Dominic!" Susan got up and pushed her cart away.
8:04 PM
Michael was sitting at his table, fidgeting. It had been a while since
he had been on a date, and he was obviously nervous. He looked around
the restaurant. His date was nowhere to be seen. Michael sighed and
began pushing the bread roll on his plate with his fork. As he took a
sip of his water, he heard a faint booming sound. He quickly looked at
the entrance of the restaurant. Soon, the moment he was waiting for
came: his date arrived. The waiter at the front was startled. "L-lady
Bullet! How can I help you today?" The heroine smiled, looking down at
the scrawny man. "I'm here on a date, for Michael?"
8:53 PM
The night had calmed down. The restaurant mellowed out as tables
quieted down to soft talking. But Michael didn't notice any of that.
Any less aware, and he would have thought he was the last one there. He
was too entranced by his date. She was everything Michael had hoped for
and more. Seeing her up close, Lady Bullet was more beautiful than any
phone camera could do justice. Lady Bullet had also changed out of her
uniform. "Actually, my uniform can alter my exterior appearance anytime
I wish," she told Michael. Without any effort, Lady Bullet's clothes
changed. She was now wearing a red sequin gown with black peep-toe
pumps. Michael tried to convince himself that he was fascinated by the
technology, but he was really attracted to Lady Bullet herself. Michael
tried to restart the conversation.
"So Lady Bullet, what el-"
"Please, you can just call me Lady," the heroine replied.
"S-sorry," Michael stuttered. "Do you do anything else besides the
superhero thing?"
"No," Lady Bullet smiled.
Michael was stunned. That certainly wasn't the answer he was expecting.
"Oh," he sighed.
"What about you?" Lady Bullet asked. "Do you do anything else besides
living in burning buildings?"
Michael jumped at such a sharp joke. "Oh, uh, nothing much I guess,"
Michael laughed nervously. "I'm just a tech journalist."
"That's very fascinating Michael!" Lady Bullet replied. She took a sip
of her water.
Michael started trembling. He could hear his heart beating. "And I know
this is weird. On the job I'm interested in you. Your super tech, I
mean. But I'm also also interested in getting to know you..."
As he said this, Michael's hand began to rest upon Lady Bullet's. Lady
Bullet pulled away abruptly.
"Oh! I'm sorry! I'm sorry," Michael was blushing red. In all honesty,
Lady Bullet was blushing too.
"No, no. It's not that," Lady Bullet replied. "I'm just startled. I-
I've never done this before."
Lady Bullet smiled and held Michael's hand.
10:02 PM
The two headed back to Michael's interim apartment. Lady Bullet was the
one who escorted Michael to his home. As they entered, Lady Bullet took
a moment to look around. Near the doorway was a box full of picture
frames. Lady Bullet picked up the top picture of Michael and another
woman. "Who is this?" Lady Bullet asked.
Michael looked and got wide eyed. "Oh! It's not what you think!"
Lady Bullet smiled. "I wasn't thinking that."
Michael relaxed. "That's my wife. Erm, I mean ex-wife I guess."
Lady Bullet put the picture down. "Do you mind if I-"
"She died. She died. It was cancer."
Lady Bullet let out a small gasp. "Oh! I'm so sorry."
Michael tried to pass it off, but he was obviously tearing up, his
voice cracking. "It's okay. It's just been hard these days. It's hard
to be alone."
Lady Bullet walked up to Michael and took his hands. "You don't always
have to be alone."
12:00 AM
Back at headquarters, the Lady Bullet suit docked into the tube and
opened up. Dominic stepped out and let out a deep breath. He sat on the
nearest chair expressionless. "Are you okay, Dominic?" the computer
voice asked.
Dominic was still frozen. "Am... am I gay?"
There was silence. Then the computer voice started up again. "I cannot
answer that Dominic."
"But the thing with Mich-"
"Remember Dominic, you share your thought processes with Lady Bullet
and Lady Bullet shares her thought process with yours."
Dominic was getting aggravated. "But why? This wasn't part of being a
superhero!"
"As Lady Bullet the vigilante, you are to help those people who are in
need."
Dominic scoffed. "And Michael needs help getting laid?"
"The algorithm will make things apparent as events take their course
Dominic."
Dominic wiped his eyes and began leaving the lab. "Yeah, the
algorithm," he said sarcastically.
