A week passed and then a month. Kabir and Arjun's trip to Delhi was
delayed. I had messaged Arjun and he said he was preparing for his visit
and that he would let me know once the plans were finalized. Eventually,
Kabir work played spoilt sport and he had to cancel the visit. However,
Arjun messaged saying he was coming down and he would like me to be around
when he met his mother. I reluctantly agreed - I did not know Arjun that
well, I had somehow unsheathed an inner personality of his, his
relationship with his mother was obviously complex and here I was playing
the supportive sister's role in all this.
Arjun reached Delhi on a weekday and was staying in one of the many spare
apartments his family owned. He asked me to pick him up from his place
around noon so that we could join his mother for lunch. As I reached his
apartment, I saw a lady walk towards my car and it took me a bit to
realise that the "lady" was Arjun. I gasped as I noticed that he was
wearing a nude and pink formal cotton saree with dull gold brocade. The
sleeve of the blouse was nearly elbow length and was of the same design,
with works of pastels sewn in. His hair was parted at the side and was
done up in a French roll, creating a semi bouffant on top. His gorgeous
back showed through between the updo and the cut of his blouse. He was
wearing tear drop earnings, a simple pearl neckless and was carrying a
black tote bag. His make up was immaculate and befitted a formal occasion
- darker liner on the upper eyelid with a lighter coat on the lower eyelid
made his eyes more beautiful (if that was possible) and his face was done
up with different shades of nude and pastels. His lips stood out in light
pink lip gloss and I knew any guy would be dying to steal a kiss. "Anjali!
You look gorgeoussss!!!" I squealed once I had regained my composure and
hugged her. She hugged me back, giggled and said, "A trip to the salon
honey! None of this is my handiwork."
"I hope your mother can handle the change. I am sure any mother would be
thrilled to have a daughter as smart and beautiful as you," I said
honestly. "I hope so. I have sent her a picture of mine when I am all
dolled up and I have prepped her so she wouldn't be as shocked as you
think. Anyway, I am going to ask her for a job. It's as much my company as
it is hers you know," Anjali stated as a matter of fact.
We had reserved a table at a restaurant at the Hilton. Anjali's mother was
already there and she looked every bit a CEO of large corporation. While
she had silver streaks in her hair and was probably a couple of pounds
heavier than Anjali, the resemblance was uncanny. There was nothing that
Anjali's father had brought to Anjali's looks. Mrs Mehta was dressed in a
gorgeous peach colored chiffon saree befitting her stature (I was sure it
cost as much as my last earned salary) and once an awkward hug with Anjali
was done, she held out her immaculately manicured hands towards me and
said, "I am Mrs. Mehta. You must be Neha."
"Yes. Its very nice to meet you Mrs Mehta. Anjali speaks a lot of you," I
replied hesitantly.
"In that case, you would not have a good impression of me," she said with
a smile and sat down. This woman was a force of nature and this lunch was
going to be a long one.
"Arjun, should we order first? I am starving," Mrs Mehta said, looking at
the menu. Suddenly conscious, Anjali replied softly, "Mom! If you insist
on calling me Arjun, would you atleast say that a bit softly. Things may
become embarrassing for both of us." I smiled to myself - Anjali had
certainly received the DNA of this woman - he knew what buttons to push.
"I am sorry. You are right," Mrs Mehta replied evenly, turned to me and
said, "Neha, thank you for accompanying Arjun today. I know it is tough
for him and we appreciate you being here for the support. We are going to
speak very frankly and honestly today and we would request you to keep
everything you hear to yourself. Also, if at any point, should you get
uncomfortable with the conversation, you are most welcome to excuse
yourself."
"Sure Mrs Mehta. I appreciate that. Thank you," I replied without any
confidence. If this lady was my mother, I would not have put a thing out
of place in my room while I was growing up. Mrs Mehta continued, "Arjun,
today is the day to be honest. Tell me everything."
And Arjun began. Most of it was unknown to me as well. He said he wanted
to join the company but before that, he wanted his mother to know the
truth about him. His resume was rich and his IQ levels were touching the
genius mark and he thought he would be great asset to the company. He also
wanted to be a part of an organization his parents had built. He went on
to lie that he had "discovered" himself when he attended fancy dress ball
in women's wear (at a friend's insistence) and that occasion had opened up
a side of his that he did not know existed. "You always did look like me
you know. You look really beautiful. And I love your saree and the way you
have worn your hair. Very classy and beautiful. Just like my daughter,"
Mrs Mehta said touching Anjali on her arm. I saw Anjali look away and bite
her lower lip. "I am sorry but I am also very confused Arjun. You say that
till a couple of months ago, you were a regular guy and one event changed
everything. Is that even possible?" Mrs Mehta asked genuinely. "Mom, I
know what you are asking. I have thought of it too. I don't know if I am
gay. I don't know if I am transgender. I don't know if I am straight. I am
being completely honest with you. I am more comfortable wearing clothes
such as what I am wearing right now. It makes me fit in. I know my
mannerisms have always been a bit effeminate. In men's wear, I always
stood out. In women's wear, I am just another pretty girl and India is
full of pretty girls," Arjun said confidently. I smiled, what an answer!
Mrs. Mehta smiled, "No you are not just a pretty girl. You are a very
beautiful woman. Welcome back. And I am sorry I never understood you" No
one could have stopped the tears from flowing after that. I wish all
mothers could be as accepting and understanding as Mrs Mehta. Arjun didn't
know it yet but he was a lucky girl.
"So what is the plan? You want to live as a girl from now on? Move back to
Delhi? When do you want to join the company?" Mrs Mehta asked, all
barriers broken between them. "I want to move back to Delhi and join the
company immediately. Do I want to live as a girl now? I don't know. That
is a life decision. Why don't I try it for a while and see figure it out
for myself. I think I need to see a psychiatrist to answer all my
questions," Arjun replied. "You have thought it through. One issue I see
is that if you join my company as a girl and then decide to move back to
being a boy, I am not sure how that would work out with the employees.
Don't misunderstand me, I will support you in whatever decision you make.
I don't want to lose you again," Mrs Meha said kindly. "I know Mom. If you
are okay, then I can join work only once I am sure about myself." Mrs Meha
would have agreed to buy Arjun a Porche if he had asked at that point.
Kabir had made plans to visit a month later, which was around the Diwali
time. I met Arjun a few times and we had managed to spend a lot of girl
time together. From doing girl talk, watching movies to shopping and
visiting the salon together, we had covered it all. Arjun and I had gone
to one of the high end boutiques in central Delhi and gifted ourselves
lehengas for Diwali. I hoped Kabir would like it. We also had given
ourselves new hairdos - I had given myself a sassy inverted bob and Anjali
had got a more feminine long middle parted layers which came down to the
bra strap length. I had already accepted that she was prettier than I was,
by a fair distance, but her new feminine haircut increased the distance
even more. On Diwali day, each of us spent time with our families and then
decided to meet at a nightclub and party late. I knew Kabir was not
excited with my new hairdo - he said I looked beautiful but I knew that he
preferred me with longer hair. As we went to Anjani's house, I could see
Kabir staring as Anjali walked out. I couldn't blame him - her hair was
parted in the middle and she had pulled back one side with a cute hair
ornament. She had teamed her silver jhumkas in her ears with pink and
silver bangles on her wrist. Her gorgeous (and super expensive) lehenga
was pink and mauve and showed her toned stomach and accentuated her
slender build. Her pink and pastel focused make up and fuchsia nail paint
completed the picture of a gorgeous woman. "Hii Kabeerrr! My my don't you
look handsome!" Arjun skittled on the toes of his kitten heels and hugged
him. "Huh Hi Arj...Anjali. You...erm...look beautiful," Kabir replied,
looking very uncertain. I rushed them into the car and we were off to the
party. "Anjali, Ved would be coming along as well. You remember him
right?" I winked at her and said. "Yes. How could I forget? My first kiss
with a boy. My prince," Anjali made a helpless damsel in distress face
sarcastically, "Thank god I sneezed or else my first kiss would be quite
different," Anjali continued, patting Kabir playfully on the head while he
drove. Kabir looked so uncomfortable but I caught him looking at Anjali in
the rear view mirror.
At the party, we were joined by several friends of Kabir's and mine, which
included Ved. Ved couldn't contain his excitement at seeing Anjali again
but Anjali didn't reciprocate the enthusiasm. Everyone was already quite
tipsy by the time we had got there but over time, we progressively got
more drunk. Anjali danced with a number of boys, all of whom were dying
for the attention of the prettiest girl in the group. I had reached a
point when I was not in control myself and wanted to sit down. Ved sat me
down on a couch and went over the bar. I could see Anjali and him chatting
at the bar. Boys! They see a pretty girl and forget all about their drunk
girlfriend. Soon Anjali came over and said, "Sweetie, Ved is making a move
on me and I am not interested at all. Kabir wants to take you home but we
think its best that he drops me home and Ved drops you home instead. Is
that fine?"
"Yes as long as Kabir doesn't fall for you," I slurred. "Hehe, I am too
pretty for him," Anjali mocked jokingly. "And you are not his type
anyways," I said unkindly, not in control of what I was saying. I saw
Anjali's expression change and I couldn't tell to what. She tucked a
strand of hair behind her ear, smiled at me and walked away. As Ved led me
out of the part, I turned back and saw Anjali and Kabir getting another
drink at the bar. "Ved, aren't they coming too?" I asked, barely able to
string a sentence together. "Not yet. Kabir said that they want to keep
going for a bit and then get home. But its important for you to get home
since you are in a bad state. And since it looks like I am not going to
get lucky tonight, I am going to drop you home," I heard Kabir say before
I passed out.
