To expand the nervous system is to expand the mind. It's true that one
is never the same after the first modification. You can set your body
back just the way it was, but the transformation of the mind cannot be
undone. Once the machine helped me to discover that I was never Marco,
but Kendra all along, how could I resume the charade? And so, as I
returned to the chamber to revive my father, I knew he would ever quite
be the Jerry that raised me again.
The Surgeon's control panel included several view options for the body
scan. One option displayed only Jerry's skeleton. Bones are still best
modified through hormone replacement rather than surgery. Experiments
with bone plasticity show that it is possible to reframe one's skeleton.
Even under anesthesia, though, such a mod would still be excruciating.
Dad's modifications were to his nervous system, skin, and musculature.
He would keep his penis and testicles and would not grow breasts. But,
in terms of chemical and synaptic activity, he would be entirely
transformed. Or "they," rather. Jerry was now a Mod. And, whether they
could accept it or not, they would emerge from the chamber as far more
of a woman than a man.
I flipped to the skin view and checked the status of Jerry's epidural
refabrication. The machine was still rethreading Jerry's pores with a
reduced size. The machine's billion microscopic arms bobbed in waves
like sewing bobbins across his body.
This was the most delicate and complex part of the operation. the
thought that it was my own father in the machine made me anxious.
Surgeons are quite safe. Home units are even available for quick, simple
mods. Accidents were quite rare, but the tech I could access at the lab
was on the bleeding edge of tech.
Jerry's collagen levels had already fallen to a feminine target level.
The machine now reprogrammed three fourths of the cells in the outer
epidermis. Jerry's cells immediately joined and with, and thickened
their skin's deeper layers. The collagen pattern linking their muscle
fibers were now looser and straighter. This would bring him less arm
strength but greater power and control of his legs.
I thought of the first time I ran with femme legs, strong and graceful
as a wildcat. Cool sweat dripped and glistened down my body's tight
bends and meanders. For the first time, my body and spirit--what we now
call the Gross and Subtle bodies--felt perfectly aligned.
Physicians now accept the idea that all humans carry with them two
bodies. The first is the Gross Body, our every day outer fleshly carbon
and chemical incinerator. For centuries humans in the west believed that
was where the body begins and ends.
Our second body is the Subtle Body. It consists of electrical pulses,
nerves, and synapses running from the brain to all parts of the body.
Some humans are simply born with a Gross Body of one sex and a Subtle
Body of the other. This aberration is what makes one "trans" in the
classic sense.
Trans people existed long before Surgeon machines, electric lights, or
even the wheel. These women "tucked," "stuffed," and wore makeshift
birdseed breasts. I long at times to somehow revive them for second
lives in elegant, meticulously modded forms.

The next view displayed Jerry's nervous system. Divorced from the body,
it resembles a willow tree. I believe our nerves carry more of our
personality than the brain. When it comes to "gender reassignment,"
modding your relationship with your nervous system is 90% of the game.
Subtle/gross body mismatch is no longer seen as a "problem," at least in
the big cities. Many call it a blessing and envy trans-folk for their
enriched palette of experience. I considered my own mismatch a blessing.
It drove me to expand and explore my morphology, the most thrilling
journey of my life.
The most jarring difference for Mods experiencing a femme body is in
motion and touch. The female brain receive more signals through touch.
Upon receipt, it further processes those signals in very different brain
regions. Masc-to-femmes often take six weeks to raise their motor skill
test scores back to adult levels.
It occurred to me I'd never checked who would be running Jerry's motor
skill tests. I shot Kylie a text.
"Do you know who's doing my dad's rehab tests?"
"Yup!"
"Who?"
"Guess."
"You?"
"Me!"
"Yippie."
I was genuinely glad. Though I found her exhausting in conversation, she
was the best therapist at the lab.
I looked forward to the day that Jerry finished their Mod training.
Perhaps I could convince them to go jogging or swimming with me. Jerry's
fat distribution would be quite different after the mod. I did nothing
to his testicles or penis, as he requested. I designed his modifications
to give them a high dose of all other aspects of the female body
experience. This I hadn't told them.

Women have more nerve endings than men. These nerves run through their
bodies in greater densities, as well. Most new masc to femme Mods ask
about the nipples. I tell them I can increase the nerve density, but
male and female nipples have, on average, the same density. Such an
operation is, thus, unrelated to sex or gender modifications.
Once someone asks this first question, I know a second it on its way:
"Will I be able to have multiple orgasms?" It is my inauspicious duty to
inform them that men are naturally capable of multiple orgasms. and they
could have been having them their entire lives. Occasionally, this
conversation ends with the subject choosing not to undergo the
procedure.
This is a shame, because a woman's experience of reality is still very
different than a man's. To become a woman is more than to become a sex
toy. It's a shame so many men limit their experiences because of
ignorant fears. They will never know the euphoria of expanding one's
morphology. I smiled because my father was no longer among these men
and, at the moment, hardly a man at all.
The Surgeon ceased its whirring. There was a final flash. A buzz
startled me from my reverie. The table on which Jerry lay rose back from
the surgeon chamber into the control room. He was already emerging from
the anesthesia.
"How do you feel, Jerry?"
Jerry sat up.
"No, lay back down, keep still. Dr. Kamura is coming in to touch a few
things up."
"Dr. Kamura?"
"Dr. Kylie Kamura. She's your therapist."
"Okay, okay. Thanks, son--uh, Kendra."
"No problem... mom."
