A short time later mom and I were sitting in the coffee shop.
She looked at me with a serious look. "Andy what you did to yourself,
taking those hormones is very serious. Do you really realize what you've
done to yourself. What if you change your mind someday and decide becoming
a girl was the wrong decision, you'll never be able to father a child and
what you've done to your body you may never be able to look like a man."
"Mom I've felt like a girl for as far back as I can remember. I've never
once had any doubt that I'm supposed to be a girl, all i've ever felt is

turn me into a guy like Mike and dad. You have it easy, you're a woman and

Mom reached across the table and took my hand. "Andy do you really know
what becoming a girl means? Not everyone is going to accept you, life
being transgender isn't going to be easy. What about school? Kids your age
can be mean towards gay and trans kids. How will your friends react to you
all of a sudden becoming a girl? Are you attracted to boys or girls? There
are a lot of questions, like what kind of girl do you see yourself as?"
I pulled out my phone and opened my pictures. I swiped to pictures Jenny
took of me earlier in her cheer uniform and handed it to my mom.
"This is the kind of girl I want to be. I came out to Jenny today and told
her everything i'm telling you. She talked me into trying on her
cheerleading uniform and I was in heaven mom. She did my hair and makeup
too, I felt like a girl for the first time in my life. I wish I could be
that girl everyday and yes I like boys. I've never felt attracted to
girls, I've only ever wanted to be one. I wish I was that pretty
cheerleader in the picture, that I had a cute boyfriend who would hold my
hand when we walk down the hall, give me kisses, be my date to the school
dance and just see me and like me for the girl I really am."
Mom swiped through the pictures, her expression was kind of disbelief that
the girl in them was really me. When she was done she smiled as she handed
me my phone back.
"Wow Andy you make a cute cheerleader, I really like how she did your hair
and makeup too. I'm guessing this is the reason you're wearing her bra.
"Look Andy it's not that I don't believe your feelings of wanting to be a
girl. As your mom I have to be sure about all this, that it's not some
phase, which you taking hormones for the last nine months kind of proves
to me you're serious about this. Going through transition to become a
girl, to change your gender is a life changing thing, not just for you,
but for everyone, your family, your friends.
"Let me ask you, if you were to transition and become a girl, where do you
see yourself in five years?"
I knew the answer to that, I'd been thinking about what life could be like
as Ashley forever. "Five years from now. Well first thing is i'd have
support from my family to become Ashley, that's my girl name. I'd
hopefully have my gender confirmation surgery by then and be female all
the way.
"It would be my senior year so hopefully I'd be a varsity cheerleader,
maybe even captain. Having started my transition early enough, i'd be as
pretty as any girl in school and i'd be in the running for homecoming and
prom queen. I mean what girl doesn't dream of that. I'd have a boyfriend
that accepts me being transgender and loves me for the girl i've become.
"I would hope by then that my supportive mom would help me do a few beauty
pageants. When you used to judge those beauty pageants when we were
younger and take us with you I always wished I could have been one of
those girls, walking across the stage, my hair and makeup done up all
pretty, wearing one of those pretty pageant dresses.
"When I see those pictures of you when you were younger, how pretty you
were, how you were a cheerleader and would do those pageants. I've always
wished I could be like you, that I could be your daughter and do all those
things you did when you were a girl.
Becoming a girl is all I think about all day everyday. The way the
hormones have made me look and feel over the last few months, I'm more
emotional and in touch with my feelings and when I see how my body is
changing I love it, I feel like i'm becoming a girl and I don't want it to
stop."
I started to tear up as I was talking. Mom got up and walked around the
table and gave me a hug, a hug we held for a while, then she handed me a
tissue to dry my tears. "It does feel good to cry doesn't it." I smiled
nodding my head.
She sat back down, grabbed my hand again. "Andy I want you to be happy and
I have always wanted a daughter. Those are some big dreams you have and I
doubt any boy would say he dreamed of being cheerleading captain or prom
queen who didn't truly feel those feelings would say what you've told me,
I want you to know I will always support you and we will get through this
and I will do everything I can to help you become the girl you want to be.
But when we do this, we do it right and we do it all the way. I want to
help you become the girl I think we both know you want and need to be.
"There is going to be a lot to learn about being a girl, about becoming
Ashley, which by the way I think is a very pretty name.
"You'll be going through a lot more changes both physically and
emotionally than you already have, but from what you've said I think
you're ready for it."
I smiled at mom. "Mom I am so ready for it and thank you for being here
for me, I love you."
"I love you too and I think it's been very brave and courageous of you to
come out to Dr. Price, Jenny and I and tell us your feelings. But you know
we don't keep secrets in our family and tonight when we get home we're
going to sit down with your father and Mike and you're going to come out
to them."
I just sat there silent thinking about how dad and Mike would handle me
telling them I wanted to be a girl.
"You've come so far today honey, to have had these feeling your whole
life, to have kept them from everyone and to now come out, you're a very
brave young lady who I'll be proud to call my daughter."
I looked up and smiled at that. "Don't worry, I'm going to be right there
to support you. Your dad and your brother love you and we'll get through
this and do this as a family."
"Thanks mom, I want to cry again but I won't, if i've watched anything
about you, besides the fact you're always so pretty even when you don't
try to be, it's that you're such a strong and confident woman, wife and
mom, you're the kind of woman I hope to be someday. I know it's not
something you ever expect your son to say to you, but it's true."
She smiled as she stood up. "No I can't say I ever expected my son to say
that to me but thank you, that means a lot more than you know to hear you
say that. Now are you ready to go, I texted your dad to tell him we're
going to have a family talk tonight."
I hugged her again. "I think I'm ready mom, I just hope dad and Mike won't
hate me or think I'm some freak."
Mom broke our hug off and held me at arm's length. "You're dad and your
brother would never hate you or think of you that way, we're going to get
through this as a family. If you're going to be my daughter...Ashley, no
daughter of mine is going to let a man or anyone for that matter decide
how she feels about herself. A woman can be strong and confident yet
pretty and feminine at the same time. That's your first lesson young
lady."
I smiled, I had won my mom over but as we walked out to the car I was
nervous at how dad and Mike would handle me coming out.
