"Ah, come in, Mr Collins. Do take a seat." the attractive middle aged HR
lady said.
"Well, I have to say that your application, which is one of two hundred and
fifty we have had for the job is the best one by far, but unfortunately we
cannot employ you."
"What do you mean?" I asked anxiously. I had been out of work for six
months and this would be my dream job, Director in charge of Manufacturing
at a large, well respected, multi-national company.
"This company has a 'Diversity policy' and it has been agreed that the
board would be 30% diverse by the end of next year. You, as a middle class,
white, male, just simply do not tick any of the required boxes; unless you
are gay, of course?" she said with an inflection at the end of the sentence
to denote that she expected a reply.
"No, I am not, I am attracted to women. Would it help if I was gay?" I
responded.
"Well, we might just have been able to squeeze you in if you were gay but
without that you really have nothing. You're not from an ethnic minority,
not female, not disabled, sorry differently abled, we're not allowed to say
disabled any more, gay or Trans. So I am sorry we can't employ you."
"So you can discriminate against me because I am mainstream, and that is ok
despite the fact I am the best person for the job, just because of some
daft quota?!
"It's not a daft quota, I assure you, Mr Collins. It's so minorities can
get jobs."
"Even if they are unsuitable for them?"
"Well, yes."
"Well, suppose, I said I was Trans, would that help?"
"Oh, yes, perfectly. You would get the job without a problem. It would tick
three boxes. If you were transitioning from male to female, you would tick
the 'trans' box, the 'female' box and the 'gay' box (assuming you are still
attracted to women after your transition), so that would be wonderful, it
would take us to our quota goal in just one hiring! Of course, you would
need to prove that you are Trans, though and not just saying it to get the
job!"
"How would I do that?"
"Well. We would need a letter from your psychiatrist saying that you are
transitioning and your doctor that you are taking the required medication,
you would also need to have changed your identity and name by deed poll
and, of course, dress appropriately for the office. Our women directors
tend to wear dark skirts just on or below the knee with matching jackets,
tasteful but bright silk blouses and black heels with stockings or tights.
The male directors of this company are still a bit old fashioned and do not
like to see women in trousers."
"And yet they would be quite happy to see me in a skirt?" I reposted.
"Oh, yes, they would expect it."
"But supposing I look terrible in a skirt."
"Oh, I don't think you would look bad at all. With your slight figure and
the fact that you're quite short and have delicate facial features, I think
you could be quite pretty. Add to that the right hair and makeup I think
there would be no doubt. Anyway, have a think about it and let me know
this week. I can hold the job open for one month assuming you have started
to transition by then. If you need a psychiatrist, doctor and lawyer, I
have the names of some who I am sure would be able to fast track you.
"And if I agreed all this?"
"I would say, welcome to our board, Ms Collins!"
Should I continue with this story? I got the idea from the fact that the
business plan of one of the finalists in 'The Apprentice' was to set up an
employment agency with the specific aim of placing more women in
boardrooms, particularly in manufacturing.
