Preface:
I could name a Eastern European city (or mid European depending on your definition) but won’t because the inhabitants will be up in arms. ‘If God had allowed I would have joined an order like this myself at my daughter’s age.’ Lady Agure said. ‘Beyond these walls are very rough people.’ she added thinking with distaste of her occasionally very violent, dull and unclean husband – now lying in his grave 200 mile away .
But she was thankful nonetheless for the fortune he made and left to her so abruptly.
Now if her daughter could be settled permanently into a happy but cloistered situation then she could travel and attend soirees with interesting women and occasionally be with males who were exceptionally charming, talented and did not mind the odd bite during lovemaking. Or she could find God also – but that wasn’t likely.
‘Well’ said Mother Superior ‘the call to God is not limited to the young – older women have entered into the eternal marriage to Christ after being bereaved and because they have felt the call to be more holy. ‘Yes I am’ said Lady Agure who, warmed by the atmosphere of care and beauty, would have moved in herself tomorrow given a chance.
‘You appreciate- said Mother Superior ‘that your daughter will pass from public view – and except for occasional organized visits from you will see no one else except her sisters and support in the Lord’s work. She will never be close to men – except for receiving the sacraments and occasional visits from a priest. Further you will be required to provide 26000 US dollars a year as maintenance for her wellbeing as we survive by such payments and with a little help from the Church .‘
?I agree willingly’ smiled Lady Agure ‘and I only wish I could enfold myself into the femininity and security here.’ She spoke sincerely as she saw her action as protection against the coarse world for her daughter. And 26k dollars was not going to dent her ten million a year income.
Mother Superior then turned to Mekis. ‘Welcome youngest member – the Senior Sister here Sister Brec will take you to your place of relaxation and care. My name is Alesis but you refer to me as Mother normally.’
With a gentle smile Sister Brec moved to take the young girl away holding her arm gently.
‘Thank you Lady Agure’ Mother said ‘I hope you will return periodically and perhaps stay for short periods in return for your worldly support – and do not worry about Mekis she is not far away ever because our flock never leaves the confines of this holy retreat except for their funeral’.
As they parted and the door closed Alesis licked her lips quickly and felt almost dizzy at the prospect of training such a beautiful young thing with the help of her long term partner Sister Brec.
Lady Agure for her part felt a lovely sense of anticipation at the chance to stay there some time - the inmates appeared plain but sweet and innocent – Lady Agure supposed it would be fun to interact with them and see if they were actually as chaste as they said.. Chapter Two:
Sister Brec deftly lead Mekis along quiet corridors and past a chapel where nuns could be seen quietly praying.
As she moved she talked quietly and reassuringly to Mekis and held the youngsters hand so she would not feel too frightened.
‘I suppose you wonder what this life will involve.’ The sister murmured ‘It is true that there is obedience, poverty and chastity – well at least hardly any men’ she said with some definiteness ‘but there are one or two men - some of our talented leaders are holy it is true but they are also rogues who enjoy a laugh and more when they have had a wine or two.’
‘However I can assure you that this secure place is for the gentler gender to pray and interact in. You will never feel threatened by males here – in fact they can be scared of us.’
Mekis allowed herself a little smile – she would really enjoy scaring some of the bullies she had met at school.

‘Oh’ said Mekis faintly not understanding really but comforted by the program’s ordinariness.
Sister Brec did not understand the program either but it did not matter – its function was simply to keep those outside the institute happy with it’s work
‘In the morning’ said Sister Brec ‘you will return to Mother Superiors office from your cell without speaking when you hear the chants– come wearing just the smock that is hanging on the door of this room where you will sleep. Wait quietly there until she returns from devotions. Goodnight Mekis. I suppose you are travel weary and sore so I hope you sleep well. You have a little while to make yourself clean and pretty and sweetly perfumed. We are very plain during the day but a little beauty at night and in front of the Mother Superior is acceptable’.
Chapter Three.
Mekis slept well in the quiet pervading silence that was broken by early morning singing that lifted to the sky and hopefully was heard by God. She rose, toileted and put on her smock and padded barefoot along the smooth stones of the cloisters – obviously everybody was at devotions for she saw nobody and when she arrived at the Mother Superiors quarters she went into the day room as she had been directed to last night. She shut the door from the unattended office and sat on the hard bench to wait for Mother Superior.
The Mother Superiors quarters seemed to comprise the office used yesterday and a the plain small day room she was now waiting in with ablution facilities attached at the back. To the other side was a small sleeping quarters room only slightly larger than the cell in which she had spent the night.
Mekis waited for only a short time and then Mother Superior returned in good spirits. ‘Ah Mekis glad you are here – just come with me to wash your face it has a little dirt from yesterday on it.’ Mother Superior gestured with her arm and Mekis obediently went forward looking over her shoulder to see where she was expected to go. Mother Superior shut the door to the bathroom gently and Mekis walked to the washbasin. When she neared the shower she felt herself grasped roughly and pushed into the shower and further because the back wall swung smoothly without pressure on it’s axis to reveal a room beyond. Before Mekis had time to catch her breath or even wonder what was happening she was suddenly in a room with the Mother Superior behind her and magically Sister Brec behind the Mother. Without any drama or words one took each arm and steered her to the wall where two leather armbands were attached in a single quick fix action. Within 10 seconds each wrist was held up against the wall?.
