THE PROPOSAL
A SHORT PLAY IN ONE ACT

Cast of Characters
Madison (Maddy) An attractive, middle-aged transwoman.
Bob A nice guy in his early 50s.
Sets and scenes:
1. A bedroom and adjoining bathroom. As this set will be mostly dark, it
can be suggested with just a bed, a window, a door to the bathroom, and a
sink. This set should be designed to be moved off-stage after the first
scene.
2. The kitchen of a pleasant townhome in an upscale neighborhood.
Most of the action takes place in the kitchen.
Time:
The present.
ACT 1
Scene 1
SETTING: The bedroom and bath.
AT RISE: It is mid-afternoon, but the bedroom is dimly lit; the only
light source is the diminished sunlight glowing through closed curtains
on the window. No details other than a bed can be discerned. The bathroom
door is closed. BOB and MADISON are in the bed. BOB is on his back and
MADISON is on top.
Their forms are barely visible, just silhouettes backlit against the
window, but it is clear that MADDY is giving BOB oral sex. Gasps and
moans indicate that BOB has just had his orgasm. MADDY waits a moment,
then sits back on her heels. A moment passes. As BOB quiets, MADDY leaves
the bed.
MADDY goes into the bathroom and turns on the light. The light reveals
that she is fully dressed in a skirt, top, and sensible high heels, which
click audibly on the floor. Her outfit is that of a comfortably well-off
suburban lady. It should not be immediately apparent that she is
transgender.
She takes a brush and fixes her hair in the mirror. She turns on the tap
and holds a washcloth under the water. She takes it and a towel back to
the bedroom and sits on the edge of the bed. She cleans BOB off, dries
him, then gently pulls the sheet up above his waist.
BOB
Mmmm...thank you, Maddy...that was great...
MADDY returns to the bathroom. She repairs her lipstick in the mirror.
BOB sits up to watch.
You're beautiful, Maddy.
MADDY
Thank you, Bob.
BOB
I love watching you do that.
MADDY
I know, Bob.
She turns to smile at him and returns to the bedroom, smoothing her
skirt. She leaves the light on in the bathroom.
I'll be in the kitchen. I put clean towels out...take your time.
MADDY leaves. BOB sits up in bed and we see that, unlike Maddy, he is
naked. Before he stands he wraps the towel around his waist. He steps
into the bathroom and we see that he is a fit, (preferably tall) middle-
aged man. He closes the door and the set is once again in the barely-lit
darkness as before.
(BLACKOUT)
(END OF SCENE)
ACT 1
Scene 2
SETTING: About 15 minutes later. The kitchen. It is tastefully decorated,
clean and bright, and it should be obvious that a woman lives in the
house.
AT RISE: Clear afternoon light streams through the window. MADDY is at
the counter making coffee. She takes two mugs from the cupboard as BOB
walks in. He is wearing jeans, a comfortable shirt, and Top-Siders. He
sits familiarly at the table.
MADDY adds a bit of milk, turns and hands the warm mug to BOB. Turning
back to the counter, she busies herself her own coffee. It is a relaxed,
domestic scene, one that has obviously been played out many times before.
BOB watches her closely, but comfortably and contentedly.
BOB
Maddy, can I ask you a question?
MADDY
Of course, Bob. I told you and Cyndi a long time ago that I'm happy to
answer any questions.
BOB
Well...do you miss it? Any of it?
MADDY
Miss what, Bob?
MADDY returns to the table and sits across from BOB. She holds the cup in
two hands, enjoying the aroma and sipping at it.
BOB
You know...being a man. I mean, you gave up a lot when you...you know...
MADDY
Transitioned? Started living full-time as a woman?
BOB
Yeah, transitioned.
MADDY
(Laughingly.) It's been two years, Bob! You should know the proper term
by now!
But to answer your question...well, let's see...
Do I miss the foul language and the disgusting jokes? Do I miss the
pointless competition in everything? Do I miss having to wear the same
dull, stupid clothes every day? Do I miss having to pretend to be
interested in 22 hulking clods chasing a pointy little ball around a
field?
It is 22 hulking clods, isn't it? Football?
BOB
(Smiling.) Yes, Maddy, 22. 11 guys on each team.
MADDY
Ok. But no, Bob, there isn't a single thing I miss about it. Not a single
thing.
BOB
(Nodding slowly) Ok. I get it, I guess. I mean, I don't understand it,
but I sort of do.
MADDY
(After thinking about it for a moment.) Pockets.
BOB
Pockets?
MADDY
Yes, Bob, pockets. I really miss not having pockets.
BOB looks at her, confused
So, look at what you're wearing. You've got pockets everywhere! Five in
your pants, two in your shirt, three or four in your jacket. And they're
deep pockets too, useful...lots of room to put all kinds of things.
So now look at what I'm wearing...a skirt and a top. Not a single pocket.
And even the so-called pockets in my cute blingy jeans are worthless. I
can hardly get a lipstick in them, much less my keys and a wallet and a
pen and notepad and a pocket knife and a million dollars in small change!
So that's what I miss about being a man. Pockets.
BOB
That's it?
MADDY
That's it.
Silence. The silence is comfortable. It should be apparent that BOB and
MADDY are friends and have been for some time.
BOB
Well, you make a hell of a woman, Madison.
MADDY
Oh thank you, Bob. I love that it when you say that.
BOB
Well, I say it because it's true. I think you're the most beau....
BOB catches himself. He fidgets and looks away from MADDY. Another
silence descends, which is suddenly not comfortable any more.
BOB
I mean, Cyndi's great and all...
MADDY noticeable stiffens. She puts her cup down, carefully, and eyes
BOB, as if she knows what is coming and doesn't want to hear it.
BOB
And I love her. I mean, we've been married 12 years, and she's great with
the kids and stuff...
MADDY waits. The quiet moment has shattered and both of them are getting
uneasy.
But she...she and I...that is...we...well...um.
MADDY
You and she what, Bob?
BOB looks up, at her, a little desperate.
BOB
We hardly ever have sex, Maddy! And we never have...I mean, she
never...you know, what you and I do...
I mean, we did it a couple of times, when we were dating, but I could
tell she didn't like it, and after we got married...never. And even
regular stuff, once Alison was born, that got less and less. And then,
after Jake came along...it all tapered off even more, so now...nothing.
Well, almost nothing.
BOB pauses, gathering steam.
And she hardly ever dresses nice...I mean, she's not a slob or anything,
she dresses nice, but she hardly ever wears a dress, or much makeup, just
jeans usually and some kind of shirt. And forget about high heels! I
don't think she even owns any.
BOB is looking intently at MADDY now.
But you, Maddy...I mean, I've known you for years, but ever since you
changed--I mean, transitioned, sorry...but ever since then...you...look
great. I mean really great. You always wear dresses and high heels and
makeup and all. And you know what I like...in bed and...and everything
else. Like this coffee...it's just the way I like it. You even wear high
heels for me just because you know I love the way they look and that
sound they make on the floor.
MADDY is motionless now, knowing BOB has to say what he has to say. BOB
looks around, makes a small gesture encompassing the room.
I love coming over here...your house is always perfect. Everything put
away. Clean.
And you smell good and I love kissing you, and... and you really like
giving me ...you know...(He looks away, embarrassed.)
MADDY
Blow jobs?
BOB
Right...
BOB's head snaps around to face MADDY again.
You do, right? Like it?
MADDY
(Grins) Yes, Bob, I do indeed.
BOB
And the other...you know...
MADDY
(Almost laughing) Oh, yes, Bob, I do indeed know. You're a wonderful
lover. Yes, I love that too.
BOB
Good. I thought so, you really seem to enjoy it, but...well, good to
know.
BOB clears his throat, then pauses, gathering up his courage.
I mean, OK, so times have changed...and I was thinking...so...what
if...would it even be possible....to...well.
He reaches across the table to take MADDY's big, perfectly-manicured
hand.
What if we got married? No, wait, I said that wrong...will you marry me,
Madison?
BOB's face is hopeful (that she will accept), scared (that she won't),
and a little regretful (that he even brought it up).
MADDY leaves her hand in BOB's. She looks out the window for a long
moment. She toys with the pendant around her neck with her free hand. She
turns to look back at BOB.
MADDY
Oh, Bob...I can't tell you how honored I am by this. I really wasn't
expecting it!...but I would be lying if I told you I hadn't ever thought
about it; you're a really nice guy, you've got a good job, you're not at
all bad looking. I would love--I would be thrilled to accept.
But.
MADDY frees her hand from BOB's, and puts both her hands in her lap. BOB
looks at the now-empty space between them, crestfallen.
But you know I can't, for so many reasons. You know that, don't you? Why
it wouldn't--couldn't, couldn't ever--work?
BOB
(Defensively) No, Madison, I don't know. Tell me, Madison. Tell me why it
wouldn't work.
MADDY
(Smiling slightly, to soften the next things she has to say.)
Well...first of all, Cyndi and I are friends, Bob. I like her a lot, and
I love your kids. I couldn't do this to her and them. I introduced you,
remember?
BOB
Yeah, I remember. But Cyndi and I haven't been close in...
MADDY puts a finger to BOB's lips.
MADDY
Shhh. Second of all, yes, you're right; marriage would be legal for us
now. But do you really want to go from one marriage right into another?
And with a transwoman at that? Would you be comfortable introducing me to
your friends? People at work? Your family?
BOB
But I'm in love with you, Maddy! All that doesn't matter!
MADDY covers BOB's hand, briefly, with hers. She knows how hard this next
part is going to be for both of them. She stands, adding physical
distance between them.
MADDY
No, no, you're not, Bob. You're in love with the idea of me. You're in
love with the high heels and the makeup, the perfume and stockings and
dresses and jewelry. I love those things too, but I only love them
because they're what I need to become me. I have to wear all those things
to convince the rest of the world, most of the time, that I'm a woman.
And it works pretty well. Most of the time.
But they aren't me.
It wouldn't last living together, Bob. Being that close, constantly,
living together...no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't keep it up.
No one passes, Bob, not all the time. Oh, I'd be careful around you,
really careful, but inevitably one day you'd see me someday without the
paint, or the hair, or the padding, and then you'd see the old me, that
guy I used to be that neither one of us ever wants to see again.
But there'd he be and you couldn't ever not see him after that, every
time you looked at me. You'd only see that male person then, all the
time, no matter how much I layered on the clothes and wigs and makeup and
all the rest.
And once that happens, you would know that you didn't marry me at all,
you fell in love with and married a...a shadow, just an idea of me, and
that idea--that ideal--just doesn't exist.
And then do you know what happens?
BOB is looking away, staring at nothing, knowing but not wanting to
acknowledge that what MADDY is saying is true.
When that happens, you'll be embarrassed to be seen with me. You'll hate
waking up next to me. The fact that I'm taller than you, even in flats,
will become a problem. You'll see my square chin, my big hands, my huge
feet. You'll start to think that that's all everybody sees, too, and then
you'll think that all those people are laughing, pointing, laughing at
you, at us, that sad, pitiful idiot and that gigantic man in a dress.
MADDY starts to feel tears. She delicately wipes them away with her
fingertips. Saying these truths out loud hurts.
And then you'll come to regret the whole thing. You'll regret the cost
and the pain you put Cyndi and the kids through. You'll regret it more
and more and finally you'll resent it--resent me.
BOB tenses; his shoulders hunch and his hand on the table knots into a
fist.
You'll resent living here in my little apartment instead of your lovely
big home. You'll resent having to ask permission to see your kids, you'll
resent the awful choice of going to their concerts and games alone, or
with somebody you're ashamed of. You'll resent that it takes me two hours
every day to get dressed every single day, you'll resent the fake hair
and fake boobs and fake nails, you'll resent that I want you to take me
places and hold my hand and kiss me. And you'll really resent sending
that child support every month.
And that resentment will come down on me. And then you'll leave me too,
because how could you do otherwise? You'll come to hate yourself, and
then me, so one day you'll leave me too and at the end there will just be
three lonely, angry, resentful people, all of us sitting by ourselves in
the dark, wondering what the fuck happened.
MADDY stops, flushed and a little angry herself. She has said enough and
it has hurt her to do it. But it worked. She watches BOB's brittle
resistance fade. His hands loosen and his shoulders droop. MADDY sits.
(Softly) So, no, Bob, I won't marry you.
Another long silence. MADDY looks like she wants to say something, but
she knows that what comes next will have to come from BOB.
Finally, BOB turns to look at MADDY.
BOB
You're right, Maddy.
BOB looks down at the floor. He takes a deep, breath, lets it out slowly.
He looks up, at MADDY, and nods.
You're right.
BOB slowly stands to leave, but stops himself and turns back to MADDY.
But...what about us? Can I ever see you again? Or is that off the table
now?
MADDY
(Smiling. It feels good to smile.) Of course not. I would love for you to
come by once a month or so, just like you have been. I love having you
here.
MADDY stands to face BOB. She puts her hand on his arm.
But only if you make me a promise.
BOB
What's that?
MADDY
Promise me that you'll go back and tell Cyndi that you love her, really
love her, and tell her like you mean it. Make her believe it.
And then work on it, Bob. Put her and the kids back where they belong, at
the very center of your life, your whole existence. Tell them, show them,
in every way you know how, every way you can think of, that they mean
everything to you, that you can't imagine life without them.
MADDY takes BOB's hands in hers and holds them close to her chest..
Be a husband. Be a father. Put everything you have into just those two
things. Forever.
MADDY looks hard into BOB's eyes.
Promise me.
BOB smiles and gently disengages his hands. He then assertively holds out
his right hand to shake on the deal. It's a little awkward and theatrical
and they both laugh quietly. They shake.
BOB
I promise, Maddy. You have my word.
MADDY
Thank you, Bob. Thank you.
MADDY impulsively kisses BOB's cheek. BOB hugs her briefly, then turns to
put on his jacket. He puts his hand in his pocket and pulls out his keys.
BOB
(Grinning) Wow, Maddy, you're right about those pockets. Very handy
things to have.
MADDY
(Smiling, newly confident) Next month, then?
BOB
Next month, Maddy.
BOB goes to the door, puts his hand on the knob, then hesitates.
Maddy?
MADDY
Yes, Bob?
BOB
Thank you.
MADDY
You're welcome, Bob.
MADDY pauses to let the gravity of the moment sink in.
Give my best to Cyndi and hug the kids for me.
BOB
I will, Maddy. Believe it.
BOB leaves. Maddy moves to the window and waves as his car leaves the
driveway. She waits a beat, then picks up her phone. She dials.
MADDY
Hi Cyndi.
Doing great, thanks.
I wanted to tell you that he just left. (Smiling) Be warned, there might
be flowers.
Yep, pretty much like we thought it would. He'll be OK now.
Sure, no problem. Take care of him, OK? He's a good guy.
This Thursday? Yes, lunch would be lovely. About 1:00, to avoid the rush?
Great. Peter's? Perfect...see you then, and hug the kids for me!
MADDY logs off the call and puts the phone down on the table. She walks
to the window and stares out for a moment, her hand to her breast. Her
shoulders slump and tremble a little. A small sob escapes and she puts
her hand to her face to stifle it. She cries softly for a moment.
Her shoulders level. She puts her hand down and shakes her hair. She goes
to her purse and takes out a compact, opens it and looks in the mirror
appraisingly. She wipes the tears away, straightens a couple of stray
hairs, and uses a fingernail to fix a small smudge of lipstick.
She smiles.
MADDY
(Nodding to herself.) Looking good, Maddy. Looking really...good.
