Tesla set her work station by the autodoc. She reached back accepting a
tool pouch from the overhead lift system.
Tentacles.
"Thank you, house." Tesla opened her tool pouch.
Tesla's specs chimed. Incoming call. Tesla nodded. The call connected.
"Glasswerks," she said. "Speak."
Cheri said, "What are you doing?"
"Taking it apart. See what I can see."
"Don't break anything that's not already broken."
"Always a goal, Anything else?"
"Be careful what you throw in the frosting box. Some of it will poison a
recycler."
Tesla nodded. She had the first cover off. "It smells like dead people."
"Thank you for your expert opinion. End call."
Tesla fixed the power supply. She strung an extension cord from the media
room to the basement. She plugged in the autodoc.
Some of the lights came on. Then all of the lights went off. The house
went dark.
"Lights," Tesla said.
The house ignored her.
"Lights." Tesla waited. "Favillous." She stumbled around in the basement,
trying to remember where the staircase was. "Ah." She found the power
cord. Whoops. That was a tentacle.
The house lifted her. It swung her from tentacle to tentacle in the dark.
It carried her upstairs. It dropped her by the breaker box.
"Lights." She waited. "Right. Yeah. Sorry."
The windows depaqued in the kitchen.
"Thank you." Tesla walked to the media room. She unplugged the extension
cord, which was hot.
She met a war rat in the kitchen. It dropped a flashlight at her feet.
"Um, thanks?" Tesla took the light. "You guys have a tech?" she asked.
"Someone with med-tech experience?"
The rat twittered. It ran off.
Tesla reset the breaker for the media room. She reset the main breaker,
too. She clambered down the stairs to the basement. Two war rats followed
her.
They handed her tools. They made suggestions by pointing, or by touching
things with their noses.
A third rat scampered downstairs with an item fresh from the maker.
Tesla took it, puzzled. "Another power supply? Oh, I see. I burnt out the
old one. Thank you."
She changed out the power supply, disconnecting pin connectors and
flipping switches off. Some of the pin connectors were corroded. She
would need to replace these.
She plugged it in. The power available light came on.
"Seismic."
She flipped switches until the lights went out again.
The rats scolded her.
By mid-morning, she'd replaced four power supplies, two pin connectors,
and one breaker in the breaker box. But now she had an idea of what was
broken.
"This katung." She lifted it out of the autodoc. "Wonder what it does."
The one remaining rat covered its eyes.
"Wish I could speak your language."
The rat extended one finger. Toe. A middle digit.
"I understand that. Communication. Highly overrated." She checked its ear
tag. "Greg. Thanks for the help. I'm going upstairs to research this. You
want lunch?"

Tesla filled Cheri's cup at the coffee tit. She handed the mug to Cheri.
"Chenoworth Beagsley." Tesla sent the link to Cheri's ... specs? Her tel-
ID account. "Died in 2031."
"Original owner of this house." Cheri cradled the cup and sniffed. She
smiled.
"Asked to be buried in his autodoc. By the way, that beast was long dead
in 2031, totaled by insurance companies in 2029. Salvageable parts were
removed. The deader and autodoc were supposed to be buried in Lao Fan
cemetery. Records say they were."
"So it's hopeless. We can't fix it."
"Nothing is hopeless. I've been working with two bomb-disposal techs and
a corpsman. They say tech has improved since 2029. We can fix it." She
rocked her hand. "Sixty-forty that you'll spend more money than you
recover. Greg says if you let me keep working on it, I'll burn the house
down. There's no hope you'll ever make a profit."
"Greg."
"Your med tech. The rat."
"They speak to you?"
"They never shut up." Tesla tapped her specs. "Modulate their voices down
a few octaves. I can't hear most of what they say without a voice font.
Ultrasound. Super-squeaky." Tesla smiled. "Greg is his slave name, by the
way."
"What is he called?"
"Big Balls. On the chairs, fellas."
Three rats jumped onto chairs at the kitchen table.
Cheri startled. "They're in the house."
"I invited them. Big Balls, Tits, and ... I forget your name."
Tesla listened while it twittered. She nodded and named it. "Cat Piss."
Cheri smiled broadly.
"Yee-ah. Don't do that." Tesla shook her head. "They don't understand
human smiles."
Cheri lost her smile.
"To them it's a threat display."
"Can you explain to them?" Cheri pointed to her mouth. "I do this when
I'm nervous."
"So do they. They can hear you, Cheri."
"Big Balls, Tits ..." Cheri shut her eyes. "Cat Piss."

It took five weeks of constant tinkering to get the autodoc working. Then
the certification process began.
Sheri took classes at Girls College. She renewed her maker-tech
certificates and then picked up certificates for radiation tech, med
tech, and autodoc tech.
She shared her course material with five war rats.
Tesla registered a company, Glasswerx Med. She hired Sheri as her first
employee. She took over the basement, and immediately started bringing in
med tech for calibration and repairs.
"I'm firing you the moment Mom finds out your work for me," Tesla told
Sheri. "Just so you know."
Biomass Eleven didn't have any entries in the robotics competition that
semester. They all pitched in, helping Tesla's startup business, or
helping Cheri tame the house.

Tesla and Sheri sat on one side of the table. Rats sat on the other side.
"Unionize?" Tesla said, incredulous. "Why? I pay you. I feed you. You
have medical. Better dental than I have. What do you need?"
Cat Piss spoke. "Citizenship, franchise, human rights."
"I can't do that for you."
"We wish to retain the services of a lawyer. Many Fleas thinks we should
form a labor union as a first step. You run undocumented workers in a
sweat shop."
"Do you guys sweat?" Tesla looked over to Sheri. "Didn't know rats could
sweat."
"Sorry," Sheri said. "I'm with them." She moved to the other side of the
table. "Got a union card? Where do I sign? ID? Yes. In my purse. Here."
Tesla said, "The last time Shiok Labs lost employees, they sent an armed
team in to recover them."
Cat Piss stood. "Let them try."
Tesla shut her eyes and nodded. "The road to hell is paved with the bones
of lawyers. If you lawyer up, I'll need a lawyer, too. We probably can't
have the same lexi. We're on the same side, though. Power to the people."
Tesla raised her fist without enthusiasm. "You don't know that gesture?"
She showed it to them again. She rubbed her eyes. "The multibeam scanner
at the Free Clinic is...."
Big Balls interrupted. "The unit is downstairs. I will look at it after
dinner."
"Sweatshop. A sweatshop? Really?" Tesla stopped. "Ya know. Every one of
you will have to get certified as a med tech. The day is coming when
Sheri can't sign off on your work."
Sheri looked concerned. Then she shrugged and nodded.
"What a mess," Tesla said. "You guys know what a rat's nest is?" She
looked across the table. "Right. Poor choice of idioms. A can of worms?
You guys are opening a big can of worms."
Cat Piss stood again. "Did you just equate a rat's nest to a can of
worms?" He bared his teeth.
Tesla pointed to the media room. "I'm going to leave now. Before I say
something that starts a war."
"Yes, we are aware of the human idiom." Cat Piss relaxed. The other rats
laughed.
"Laugh it up, furballs," Tesla said. "Back to work."

While Cheri was in the basement, working on the autodoc, the mapmaker
appeared behind her. He tugged on Cheri's skirt. Cheri looked down.
The mapmaker pointed to the hole they had pulled the autodoc from.
"Treasure."
"Yes," Cheri said. "The treasure is very nice. Thank you."
"Query. What you do."
"I'm fixing the treasure."
"Bah. Repeat. Fix treasure?"
"Yes."
"Query ba. Treasure broken?"
"Yes."
The appekin looked at the hole. "Okay."
Cheri knelt. She hugged the mapmaker. "You did well."
The appekin pat her shoulder. "Human puzzle fix the treasure."

Tesla hauled up an old bag, age-worn and crazed. Ballistic tufflon. It
split open on the table.
Gold coins, silver coins, platinum bars. And someone's old coin
collection. Many of the coins dated from previous centuries. Tesla picked
up a platinum bar. "Still useful," she pronounced. "Not worth much."
Xi said, "It's worth money to a collector. Or a jeweler."
Tesla said, "I gave some of it to the rats. Hope you don't mind. They
found it."
Cheri said, "That may not be ours to give away."
"Ours? Yours. This is your house. You purchased the debt, right? No
liens?"
"No liens." Cheri considered. "Let me ask a lexi about found treasure."
She looked at Tesla, "If it is mine, it's ours. You found it. Only fair."
Then she laughed. "That's why the mapmaker was miffed." She smiled. "It
was in the hole we pulled the autodoc from?"
"Yes."
Cheri slapped her forehead. "I'm an idiot. I need to upgrade the speech
DN module for house constructs. Add that to my list. He tried to tell me
about the treasure. I didn't understand."
Xi asked, "The mapmaker is male, now?"
"Yeah. Don't remind me."
Xi said. "He pervs on me in the shower."
"Good." Cheri poked Xi's shoulder. "Consequences for your actions."

The treasure was worth more than they imagined. Cheri split the loot into
shares. The house got one share, for maintenance, upgrades, and
unexpected expenses. The rats got a share, for finding the treasure.
Tesla and Cheri each got a share. Hease and Xi split a share.
Xi said, "Not that I'm complaining...."
"It was your stupid dick prank that inspired me to make another mapmaker.
If I hadn't sent him to map out systems, he wouldn't have found the
blockage. Hease, you get a partial share because, I dunno. You look cute
in a dress."
"When have you seen me in a dress?"
"In Riverside. Heather."
Hease blushed. He exchanged a pointed glance with Xi.
Xi said, "It's not like she doesn't know you're gay."
Hease said, "How many others know?"
Xi said, "Why do you care?"
Cheri made the humans all sign for the monies they received. She
explained, "Because I'm not eating the taxes for the full amount."
Tesla asked, "The rats?"
"I paid them in centurions and fifties."
"Who pays taxes for the rats?"
"I guess I do."
Tesla pushed the receipt book back to Cheri. "Deduct some from my share."
Xi said, "Me, too."
Hease grumbled. He nodded.
Cheri had her lexi figure it out.
The rats returned the loot that Tesla had originally given to them.
"You gave them twenty percent?"
"Seemed fair at the time."
Cheri filed another discovery and auctioned off the treasure. Again.
This earned Cheri a thirty-second mention on the Channel Five news.

A moment later, Hease heard the sound of a moped. He looked out the
window, saw her spitting gravel as she motored out onto the icy road
without regard to traffic.

"I hope we're still on the overhead feed," Hease said. When she switched
cell towers, both of them would start stuttering.

Hease picked up his own specs. He went down to the basement. He watched

After a moment, Cheri said, "My cousin's a toad. Did he really take your
bike and leave you stranded?"
Tesla flipped Hease the keys to her Ypsilanti. "Find him. Punch him in
the dick."
Hease smiled. "Girls. I am not the person you think I am."
And then everything went black.
It hurt. Everywhere.
Hease woke up. Blood on his visor. Apple trees. Snow. He coughed. Broken
collar bone. Leg twisted underneath him. His hip hurt.
Motorcycle gloves. Jacket. He was in his own body again.
He looked up. A child looked down at him. A woman pulled the child away.
She said, "I called an ambulance."
"Thanks."
Hease woke up. Paramedic. A med bot putting in an IV. Heat packs under
one arm. Loading into an ambulance.
He saw Xi, Tesla, Cheri, and Sheri. Maybe a rat.
Xi stepped into the ambulance. "I'm his fiancee."
"You can't ride with him." The paramedic held up a hand.
"Common-law marriage. I'm riding." She sat next to Hease.
They swapped bodies again.
Hease looked down at his broken body. "Ooh," he said with Xi's voice.
"You look bad."
Xi smiled. She was missing a tooth. "I broke it; I fix it."
And then Hease passed out again.

He woke in a hospital bed. He looked over to Xi. "Hi, Gorgeous."
She had been crying. "Your back is broken. I am so sorry."
Hease shut his eyes. "Married." He smiled. "Worth it."
