John sat with both girls. He fished from a dock just upstream from
Umimatsu's.
"This was Dynamite Fengman's pier," he said. "Back before he lost his
daughters." John tossed a lure in the water and reeled it in. "Both of
you showered with the soap I gave you? Scrubbed every inch?"
Tesla and Cheri both nodded.
"Certain? There's a shower at Umimatsu's." He nodded to a bottle of soap.
"It killed my AVS rig," Cheri said.
"Scrambled it. The effect is temporary. It only takes ten square
centimeters of circuitry to record a conversation. Every inch? Head to
toe? Armpits, particulars? Did you scrub each other's backs?"
They both nodded.
"You washed your ears? People forget the ears."
"We washed everything," Cheri said. "As instructed."
He nodded. "First the bad news. The men - it's mostly men - in that
prison may never come to justice. I'm on a watchlist now, in case I
disobey orders and murder people who very much deserve it. The people in
my organization who forged paperwork and misrepresented evidence? Gone.
Best we can do for now."
Tesla picked up a fishing pole. She sat there. She stared at the pole.
After a moment, she dropped the lure in the water. She reeled it in.
Cheri said, "I called about the war rats. I spoke with Captain Caroline.
She was very clear. War rats are not on your list of invasive species."
"They're not."
"They burned my house. Poisoned the ground. I'm supposed to pay for
remediation. They killed four of my friends."
"Who did they kill?"
"Everyone who signed a union card. Save one. They didn't kill the human."
"We're moving assets into the region. War rats. Gene-engineered humans.
Mobile plants."
Cheri interrupted. "I thought mobile plants were bad."
"Bad is good. We're prepping for a war. Biomechanical monsters.
Artificial life. Things you can't imagine. Defense in depth."
"War in Fairview?"
"In places around the globe. Finish your school, girls. Place top of your
class for something. I work with a dance-instructor. There are no useless
skills. Probably no useless skills. Some of the entities we meet
communicate through dance. Computer arts, biotech, med tech. Not sure
about sex work. Girl, if you need money for an IUD, fucking ask. Okay?"
Cheri cringed. She looked away.
"I would spank your mama," John said, "but it's plain, from the feelie,
that she enjoys it."
"You watched my video," Cheri said.
"My boss watched it. She says you have a bright future in Thailand,
working for us."
Cheri hid her face with her hands.
"You shouldn't have to pay for remediation. The rats died protecting your
house. The house was the real target."
Cheri looked upset and puzzled.
"You got some high-level attention, girls. Unwanted. Unasked-for. Two of
your bio-hacks were judged hazardous. Which one of you came up with the
dick prank?"
"What was dangerous?" Cheri asked.
"The mapmaker. We're upgrading security because of you. The dick virus."
"How dangerous? I have a ... I still have...."
Tesla said, "She has a hausplant. Not sure of its pedigree."
John sighed. "I'll send a team."
"Like hell," Cheri stood. "Nobody dies protecting a fucking hausplant.
Never again."
"You still have war rats?"
"Maybe." Cheri tugged at Tesla. "Let's go."
"Wait. Fine. Take my car." Tesla handed over the keys. "Secrets Act?
Harboring a fugitive, four counts. Can you explain it? What happened?"
Cheri waited.
"Bogus charge," John explained. "Somebody didn't like the idea of rats
with human rights. That started an investigation. A person in power
leaned on the wrong buttons and you were arrested." He looked around.
"Latest thinking - you weren't the target. I was. Power politics, maybe.
Someone's line item in the budgets in Washington. The people in my
department? Pure greed. They got offers they couldn't refuse." He removed
the lure from the rod and put it in his tackle box.
John sighed. "Remember the princess I deported? The captain thinks her
family is involved."
Tesla asked, "Why would she target me?"
"I don't think she did. A commoner like me? Insults a royal? My whole
family would disappear. Daughters, cousins, ex-wives. Gone. Or worse." He
shuddered. "I think it was a first skirmish in the war we're prepping
for. This wasn't a home-grown attack."
Cheri asked, "The Chinese?"
John laughed. "I wish. I can't say, girls. Get your clearance. And then
you won't be able to say. Let's go. Plant transport. Will it fit in my
car?"
"It'll fit in the van," Tesla said. "Maybe."
John said, "I'll call for a truck."
Cheri called Shiok Labs. She got an airship.
