She found it, and held it up in front of her, so Maria could get an idea of what it would look like on her. Maria agreed that the dress WAS cute, and admonished Susan to go try it on. A few seconds later, Susan came out with it on. It was a pale yellow dress, with a scoop front, that came just about 4 or 5 inches above her knees. It was deep enough to show a slight amount of cleavage, and display her beautiful legs to their best advantage. The skirt was slightly full, so when she twirled, she had to hold it, so as not to reveal to her Mom that she wasn't wearing panties. Her Mom thought as much of the dress as Mel and Susan. Mel raised her hand to get the attention of one of the sales ladies, and told her that she wanted the dress, but wanted to look around some more. The sales lady took the dress to the front of the store, and her Manager saw who it was for. It was Lannie. They exchanged greetings, and some small talk, telling them that B.J. was pulling up on things, and attempting to take a step or two. Most times, though he teetered and fell on his butt. He would blink and crawl off to wait to try again some other time. He was now 7 months old, and looked just like his Grandpa. Lannie's Dad.
Lannie led them to the racks of bathing suits, and had to leave them to attend to other business, after inviting them to come and visit as soon as possible. Mel looked through the bikinis, and saw one that she pulled off and handed to Maria. "This is what YOU need. That old suit you have went out with drive-in movies, and Burma-shave signs. You need something to show what you REALLY look like." It was a string bikini, with black bottoms, and a silver and black striped top.
Maria looked at it, her astonishment showing. "NOT NO, BUT HELL NO!!! I wouldn't wear THAT for all the tea in China. The pattern would make me look like a clown. It's cute but no stripes, no spots, and no polka dots. Black, red, or dark blue, okay. Maybe even a lighter color, but none of the above. Susan had looked through the remaining suits and found a dark red one that had white stars over the nipples of the top. She held it out to her Mom. Here. try this one. PLEASE MOM!!!" Maria took it and looked at it. "Well. I suppose that if I decided that I didn't like being a star, I could take them off. Okay, I'll try it on." She took the suit and went into the changing room. Mel and Susan exchanged a high five. They had agreed that Maria's old suit was straight out of the "Dark Ages." It was the type that was made famous in the 40s and 50s, by Esther Williams.
A few minutes later, Maria came out and they saw her. The first thing they saw was that she was going to have to trim her bikini line. Too much bush was showing. It was the first thing Maria spoke of, also. "That won't hurt Floyd's feelings, either. He saw all the fresh trimmed landing strips at the parties those times, and told me how nice they all looked. I got the idea that he was hinting at something, but when it got cold, I put the idea on the back burner. Now I have a good excuse. I think these stars could grow on me, though. They're not too big, and are kind of cute. Who knows. I might cut the centers to let the girls out for a little air sometimes. There are distinct possibilities." Mel looked around at Susan. "You take this one and see what it looks like on YOU."
She returned in much less time than Maria had taken, but looked nearly as good. Her body, that of a girl still in her late puberty, held promises to become dazzling with time. Now she was cute as any could imagine. She had to tie the strings tighter on her bosoms, because she was just a 34 B, leaning toward a C. Maria's body was a full blown woman's. Showing the promises had been fulfilled. SHE was a 36C, or maybe D, and quite possibly as much as a 38. She showed what a woman in full bloom COULD look like. Having two c***dren had just "gilded the lily," making her just that much more attractive. Mel was a supreme example of a woman that was fulfilling all the promises, and making the most of her life. She almost bought another bikini for herself, but remembered that she had at least a dozen of all shapes, sizes, and styles at home. All the way from the 60's style bikinis, to the "wild weasel" style. One was a thin thread, for strings and was the size of a band-aid for the bottom, and two postage stamps for the top. She had only worn it one time, and decided to take it off and swim naked, instead. They paid for their purchases and told Lannie bye for now, and to come visit any time. Then they were off to see what else they just couldn't live without.
Bob and Floyd launched their boat, and pulled into a neck a little more than halfway across the pond. It was a hot spot, and the fish were biting good. They soon had nearly 40 fish in the live well. Royce hadn't made it, but Pete and Bruce were there. They had taken Pete's small tractor and had made a trail through the brush, to get close to where Bob and Floyd were in the boat. It was near enough for them to talk back and forth as they fished. Where Floyd and Bob were using jigs to fish with, Pete and Bruce had gone to their pond and caught minnows to use for bait. Both were having nearly the same success. Barely would one of them throw in the basket after depositing a fish, than the other would be pulling it back in to put in one HE had just hooked. This was where Pete had thrown the Christmas tree, when they took it down.
Althea was showing her full measure of the affection she felt for Albert, for the second time, while still in the shower. they finally finished their shower, and dried off, climbing on Albert's bed. With Albert occupying his time between Althea, Susan, Maria, and Melody, Mel had decided that she would get a part time cleaning lady. She was coming in three days a week. She came in for about 3 or 4 hours, each time, made the beds, did the laundry, dusted and cleaned the floors. She didn't do windows, cook, or wash dishes. She was in her early 30s, and wasn't bad, but compared to the other women his life, Albert thought she was a bit on the plain side. He was only mildly amused when he discovered she liked to work in her panties and bra. He had come home from an assembly, and saw her doing the laundry. He had shook her hand, and introduced himself to her, and went about his business. A few minutes later, Althea had "rode" her elephant, as she called it, to his house with Susan, and they had come in as usual. They BOTH had keys. They had introduced themselves, too, and went straight back to Albert's room. They would change clothes as soon as they took a shower. Both of them had their own rooms, and well stocked closets, and chests of clothing. The weather had been warm enough that they were going to go for a dip in the pool.
Althea pulled herself closer to Albert, whispering to him. "I hope, in a way, that you DO make me pregnant. I want to go to college, and get my degree, but being a good wife for you is much more important to me. I stopped taking my pills, but, if you want me to, I can start taking them, again. We have plenty of time to have c***dren, if we want them. I just want to have a little fun and spend time with you, and our families. We have your truck, and my elephant, and lots of room to take what we need or want with us. I'd like to see a few things, and spend some time under the stars with you. I would love, sometime, to lay out in the open, stark naked, and have you, the same way, and making love to me, where anybody could walk up and watch us. The thrill would be out of this world. Unless they were mean, I would even let them try me out, if they wanted. As long as you were part of it. The same would go for a woman. You could try her out if she wanted, while I watched you with her."
The maid was standing outside of their door. "My, My, My!!! Don't we have a rosy outlook on life. Don't look now, Dearie, but the world is a dangerous place, full of bad people. Many would cut your throat for your shoes, or even to see what color it was. I never go out of the house without a gun in my purse, and I have a hidden pocket for me to carry it in. Life is NOT sunshine and roses. It's storm clouds and nettles. It's survival of the fittest, and Devil take the hindmost. The sooner you learn that, the better off you'll be."
Both of them looked aghast at her. Albert was the first to speak. "What made YOU so bitter? You sound like you don't have a friend in the world." The maid, her name was Gloria, looked at him. "I shouldn't tell you, but I will, so your girlfriend will know to watch out. I was like her, at one time, but it changed when the guy I thought I was in love with, took me to another state to get a job. He knocked me up, and ran off, leaving me high and dry. I did what I could, and finally had my baby. It was a premature birth, and he died a month later. I tried to go home, but some bozos had other ideas. They took care of me. BOY!!! DID they take care of me. They had me financing their habits, and giving me just enough to eat on. I finally got hold of my cousin, and told him what was going on, and he came and got me. Took care of business at the same time. Neither one will ever need a woman, again. He took me in, and I lived with him and his wife for a long time. He died and she moved back with her folks. I been on my own ever since. I make enough to get by, and make ends meet, if I don't get the big eye. I managed to get an old car, and fix it up, so it gets me where I'm going."
"Is this the only job you have?" asked Althea. "Maybe we could help you out." Gloria shook her head. "The only thing I've got is what you see. The clothes on my back, and two good hands." Albert studied her for a long second. Have you ever done any type of labor, like construction?" She smiled and told him, "I was raised on a farm, with a brother. He got the farm, when my folks died, and I couldn't be found. He offered to split it with me, but I didn't want to. We did all the things that were needed to make a farm run, so I can do most things enough to get by." Albert turned and picked up his phone, hitting the speed dial. A few seconds later. "Hello, Carl? This is AL. Have you got any need for a hand at your place. I've got a lady here that reminds me all in the world of a mix between Chloe, and Maria. She's a farm girl, and was raised that way. She's a bit down on her luck, and could use a helping hand if you could see your way through. Oh YEAH!!! Great. I'll tell 'er your on the way. Thanks, And Bye, Tell Julia I love 'er and miss 'er. BYE!" He turned to Gloria. "There'll be a guy here in a few minutes, to talk with you. Don't try to blow any wind up his skirt. Just talk to him like you want HIM to talk to YOU. He's, to me, a great guy, and VERY good to work for. Almost all of his hands have been with him for years. He hired me for summer work, and is helping me to go to college. Sweetie. I've got to put on my clothes, but you don't need to, if you don't want to. It's Carl, and he's seen ya naked, before, a few times. Just like he saw your Mom, Susan, and my Mom. Julia had her baby last night. He went in to pass out cigars, and is heading back to the hospital. It was a boy. They already named him Carl, Junior, and are calling him CJ. Carl said he looks like his Mom, thank goodness."
He rolled out of the bed and pulled on a pair of jeans and a t shirt. The doorbell was ringing. "Come on in the living room, Glory. You need to meet him."
Gloria and Albert went in the living room, and Althea stood nearby. SHE was fond of Carl, too. As he came in the door, she went over and kissed him on the lips. THEN he shook hands with Albert, and was introduced to Gloria. They went in the kitchen and were served drinks by Althea, and shown her newest trophy. She was kissed, again, and congratulated, along with Albert. "Early honeymoon, I see." he remarked.
"Now, Young Lady. Tell me about yourself. Anything and everything you want me to know. I promise that it will go no further than our ears. If you want, these two will give us some privacy. It's up to you." She shook her head at him and told him, "They've already heard the worst, the rest will be much better." Carl held up his hand to her. "Is that pistol loaded? If it is, I would appreciate if you would UN load it. You're among friends here. You won't need it." She pulled it out and opened the cylinder to take out the bullets, and laid them all on the table. Carl nodded to her and said, "Thank You."
They talked for a long while, with Carl asking a few questions, and calling to ask about Julia and CJ. He told her to stick her hands out, palms up, so he could see them. She did, and he smiled at her. THOSE are the hands of a farmer's daughter, if I EVER saw them. Strong and tough. We're losing a guy in a week or so. He's moving to be close to his family. He's from Tennessee. I'll need someone to train on some heavy equipment. This girl's Dad, and a black guy named Francis will be training you. Both are the best that have ever worked for me. With your experience on a farm tractor, you should be a natural. If you're short, I can give you an advance on your wages, to get you started. I'll pay you $12 per hour to train, and will move ya to 15 when Floyd and Francis tell me you're ready. After that it'll go up 2 dollars every 3 months, until you're at scale, of $20 dollars an hour. When can you start?"
She silently raised up from her chair, and leaned down and hugged and kissed Carl's cheek. You're the most trusting and nice thing I ever met, since I left home. Thank You. I can go with you as soon as you want me. I'm daily hire, so all I have to do is tell them I'm leaving" She turned to look at Albert. "And Thank YOU, for helping me out. You've gone a long way in restoring my faith in people"
Just then the door opened, and in came Bob and Floyd. Carl looked at them and asked "How are YOU two horse thieves? Out drowning minnows, again?" Carl turned to Gloria. "This is one of your new bosses. His machine is being serviced so he took the day off. Floyd, meet Gloria Martin. This is Floyd. You'll meet Francis when ya get to the site, tomorrow. When ya shake hands with either of them make sure to count your fingers to make sure they didn't get a few." Gloria had the feeling she had found a new home, and new friends.
They heard a new commotion, and in came the three other ladies, weighted down with bags and boxes. They dumped them on the sofa, unceremoniously. We're tired. THIS has been a busy day. Who's cooking supper?" Just then Susan looked at Althea. "NO CLOTHES YET, SIS? HOW MANY TIMES HAS HE NAILED YA? What does everyone want? I'll go get it for ya. Bennie told me that I can get my license tomorrow. He rode around with me, and said he would call Public Safety, so I could get my license. I'll be Queen of the Road, tomorrow. Mel told me to come and get her, and I could use it for my driving test. Then I'll show how an elephant does it's thing.
They told Mel what had happened just earlier, and she kissed Gloria, and congratulated her. Then they invited her to stay for supper. Mel called a caterer, and asked if he had any last minute cancellations. He did and she was read the menu. It was great, and she told him to bring it to her house. It was on the way.
Gloria was starting a new chapter in her life. It would be MUCH sweeter, than she had EVER imagined it could be. She didn't know, but she would meet her future husband a week later.
