EPILOGUE - The Betancourt Family Conundrum
After having worked a bit with The Farm's newest inductee alongside her
monster of a European partner, a masked man named Gunther, Stella Primrose
had some time to kill, and she chose to settle herself at her
administrative work desk. Her computer, which naturally had access to the
Sisterhood's deep database of past and present subjects, sat idle.
Ever since her involvement in the Betancourt affair, the curiosity subtly
ate away at her, and it was a curiosity that only an inquiry to the
database administrators could potentially resolve. Having slipped an e-
mail their way prior to meeting Leslie Betancourt face-to-face for the
first time, the woman who hid behind the 'Tanya' alias...one of her
favorites as a Sisterhood agent...had gotten confirmation of the findings
they had sent her.
In this moment, it was time to open it, and peruse their notes,
potentially answering the question as to how the Betancourt family tree
manifested into the present day.
Let's see how you found your way into the picture, Arnold. Stella mused to
herself.
She ignored the years, and assessed the details that was of more interest
to her.
According to the file, Harvey Betancourt and Glenda Hemingforth were best
friends from childhood. Things were platonic between them until they were
both teenagers. By then, it was the 1940s and an enemy Axis had started a
second great war. Among those who eagerly wanted to enlist, in the wake of
the attack on Pearl Harbor, was Harvey Betancourt.
And you promised to marry her if you came back alive. Stella observed to
herself. Men like those are rare...but I suppose he wasn't in Europe long
enough to force himself on some vulnerable dutch sweetie.
Coming back with not only a Purple Heart, but a Silver Star, Harvey and
Glenda married. Their close union produced two children. Paul, and Leslie.
The latter had unsurprisingly developed a reputation for being
materialistic and selfish. The former had been bullied by his sister, and
as a result, he had grown to become socially awkward in his teenage years.
He was also still alive.
Stella's eyebrow raised, and she wrote Paul's name on a notepad,
underlining it twice before going back to the Betancourt file.
Arnold was the son of Phyllis Hanton and George Betancourt, Harvey's older
brother. Phyllis divorced George, however, and disowned them both because
she wanted to have 'nothing to do with his genes', a statement primarily
fueled by George's chronic gambling. Stella quietly surmised this to be a
factor in Arnold's own materialistic tendencies.
George's luck ran out, however, when he crossed the mob, and tried to get
away with it. On the run, he chose to have young Arnold stay with Harvey
before fleeing. George's dead body was discovered within the vicinity of
the Canadian border days later.
Nice of George to leave his sins with his son. Stella mused to herself.
As both Arnold and the now older Leslie had much in common, they were
apparently unconcerned with the social ramifications behind the romantic
union that was developing between them. Inevitably, they eloped, much to
the chagrin of Harvey and Glenda.
As the ex-soldier and the former USO woman got much older, however, their
stance towards Arnold and Leslie softened, particularly when they showed
up for a surprise visit as husband and wife. By that point, however, their
mental faculties were beginning to erode in their old age.
Stella shook her head, figuring that the reason they had returned to the
elderly couple was not so much about sympathetic overtures as it was about
inevitably emptying their large bank accounts with the help of their young
son, Tobias.
As she closed the file for the last time, and deleted it, Stella knew that
none of these familial situations mattered anymore. The former Arnold
Betancourt was now a domestic maid named Adele Norris, Leslie Betancourt
had become a satisfyingly homeless and miserable derelict, and the former
Tobias was now Coco Cocklette, an exotic dancer at Mistresses. Contrarily,
the rejuvenated Harvey and Glenda's lives were in a better spot, although
Stella had been told that since Glenda had associated with the dangerously
rebellious Tamara Portnoy, she had been advised that the couple now had
the potential to become a problem.
Thinking for a long moment on this possibility, she wrote another notation
down...this one pertaining to Tamara...and then began researching the
other name she had written.
She was, after all, curious about this Paul Hemingforth she had
discovered.
