Theresa draws the pentagram. The spell is devilishly tricky. She needs it though. As shy as she is, it’s the only way she knows she’ll get the job.
As she begins the chant she knows Gram wouldn’t approve. The magic involved is far too close to black. She smears a bit of blood of bat on her forehead. She burns a picture of a confident woman, a leather clad model she found in a magazine.
She begins the final chant.
Her friend Holly bursts into the basement. She pauses startled by the intrusion. She fumbles for the words to finish the spell, but she manages to articulate them.
Nothing happens. She wonders if she missed or garbled a word in the final chant. She looks up at Holly.
“What’s up, Holly?”
“What the fuck do you mean, what’s up? You were supposed to meet me an hour ago for a little stress relief.”
“I’m not sure I need it. I’m going to nail this interview.”
“Well then, how about a celebratory drink?”
Theresa laughs. Her tongue feels dry from all the chanting. “That sounds great. Can you give me a couple minutes to change?”
“Of course, do think I want be seen with a flannel clad yoga dropout?”
Theresa laughs, as they head up the stairs to her room. The sun in her bedroom is brighter than she can ever remember. She scampers to the window to shut the curtains. As she draws them closed she admires her fingernails. The are sharp, and a lovely shiny black.
She smiles imagining running them down a lover’s back as punishment.
She opens her closet, looking for something to match the color of her obsidian fingernails. She finally settles on a black shirt and shiny black tights.
Holly grins. “Much better.”
Theresa looks in the mirror. Holly is right, she looks sexy. The black contrasts with her pale skin. The tights cling to her legs making them look shapely. The cut of the tights makes her waist look almost waspishly thin. The simple black shirt seems to cling to her breasts, making them look huge and perky.
“Off to get some liquid relaxation.”
Holly laughs.
“I’ll drive.” Her tone leaves no room for objection and Holly just nods in agreement.
Theresa takes the wheel. Her eyes are have trouble adjusting to the sun. She breathes a sigh of relief as it begins to dip below the horizon.
It is dusk by the time they arrive at the bar. Theresa feels energized. She prances inside, Holly behind her.
A pair of college girls are at their favorite table.
“Crap those bitches are at our table.”
“Theresa, we can grab another.”
“No.”
Theresa heads to the table, stares at the girls. “Move. This is our table.”
The girls simply leave. Theresa wonders if maybe the spell is kicking in a little.
She and Holly sit down. A waitress sidles up to the table.
“I’m Tara, I’ll be your server. Are you ready to order?”
Holly looks up at her. “A pair of margaritas and some nachos.”
“Be right back with those.”
The thought of margaritas sounds delicious to Theresa. She licks her lips and runs her tongue along her teeth. Her canines seem oddly sharp.
As the waitress struts off, Holly turns her attention back to Theresa. “So what were you doing in the basement?”
“I was casting a spell to help me land the job.”
“I’m sure Grams wouldn’t approve.”
“Yeah, we’ll I don’t think it worked anyway. It was supposed to make me more confident.”
“You sure? You seem pretty aggressively in charge.”
“Well, let’s see. HOLLY KISS ME.”
To both girls surprise Holly leans across the table and begins to French kiss Theresa. Theresa’s canine cuts Holly’s lip.
“Ouch! What the fuck was that! How did you get me to do that.”
Theresa so lost in the exquisite metallic flavor she doesn’t even hear the question.
“Holly, you taste good.”
