We finished about 5pm on the Saturday and Steve ordered Pizza’s and Claire produced some bottles of wine, which apparently was the norm. I had worked with John quite a bit during the audit and we got on well, plus he seemed impressed that I had been willing to work extra to save for a house which he found quite rare about younger people, although he was only in his mid thirties himself.
With the wine and pizza finished Steve and Claire announced they best be heading home and I was just about to do the same, although I had no where to be or none to be with, when John John asked me if he could have a quiet word. I was intrigued so agreed and we nipped through to his office. He told me he had a little side line going which was a good little earner although it had to be on the quiet and asked me if I might be interested. Well, the prospect of earning some extra money certainly intrigued me so I told him I may be.
He told me that quite a few of the drivers, especially the ones from overseas who were away from their families for days on end, who overnighted often liked a woman’s touch in their cab so to speak and he had set up a little sideline. I asked him what he meant by woman’s touch and he told me some of them just want the cab cleaned and spruced up while they get a shower and their meal and some of them ask for a little more but that was purely down to the girls.
“Girls?” I asked him. He told me that Claire, who I had met on the Audit was in on it as were a couple of the cafeteria staff and some of the cleaners, who had actually started off the whole enterprise but it worked better with him running it as he had direct discrete contact with the drivers. Maybe it was the drink in me but I thought what the hell I could always say no at anytime. “I’m in” I told him.
He explained that there was a flat fee paid to him from the driver for the appointment and the rest of the negotiation was up to the girls. He suggested I discuss it further with Claire as she was the one who proposed asking me as I was quite a bit younger than all the other girls and would probably be a big hit.
