Thursday arrived, I had already packed what little I had, and waited for her driver to ring my doorbell, it seemed like ages, but finally he was here, and my heart skipped a few beats, I opened the door, “how much have you got” he asked… “just this box and my haversack, that’s all”, “ok, lets go then”…. I followed him to this big black Mercedes “Front or back” … “I don’t really mind, front would be good”…. I slowly turned the handle, and stepped inside… “Ah, here you are, how was your journey, are you hungry?” …. “Er..um.. yes please, I am a bit peckish”….. “no problem, we will get you something shortly, but first things first…… I need to go over what your duties will be, and after, show you to your room”… and by the way, you will address me as Madam Eva… for the time being”………
I hadn’t eaten so well in ages, I was full, my room was perfect, it had everything I needed, including my own on-suite, although at the top of the house, the views were stunning……
I met with Charles the following morning, for a tour of the house and gardens, it was huge, round the back was her stables and workshops where I would spend most of my working days.
I had completed my first month at the house, and received my first wage packet, more money than I had seen in a very long time, I had really fallen on my feet… work was enjoyable, I had become friends with Charles, work clothes were provided, and even some new clothes for myself.
Four months had passed, and I had started to realise, I hadn’t seen the outside world since I arrived here, so at the next opportunity I got to see Madam Eva, I thought I might ask here if I could maybe pop off into the village one weekend, Charles had told me about it, and I thought it would be nice to see it for myself.
The following day I was called to Madams office, for a meeting, the ideal chance I thought to myself…… I knocked on the door, and entered, “Hello David, come in, sit down… there are a few things I need to discuss with you”. All was good, so I plucked up and asked the question, “By all means, you can go to the village, I’m surprised you haven’t asked sooner, can you drive?” “Yes Madam, I can”, “Good, you can pick up a few things for me while you are there” She gave me a list…. “The garage next to the workshop has a car inside, you can use that, its five miles to the village. “Thank you Madam Eve” I replied….. I noticed I glint in her eye, and a wry smile.
I sat in my room and glanced through the list, they were specific items at a specific shop, and most of it was for female clothes and underwear, she must have a daughter I thought to myself, a bit embarrassing, I not ever shopped for women stuff before.
The following morning, ran down to the garage and opened the door, and found a little van, virtually brand new, perfect I thought, for picking up supplies and shopping, so off I went.
I stopped off at Madams shop first, that was the top priority, went to the counter and a woman came forward and served me, “Can I help you?” “Yes” I replied, “I’m from Madam Eve’s residence, and she has asked if I can pick these up for her, it may be easier if I leave you the list and call back a little later”… “That will be fine, they will be ready for you in around thirty minutes”… I left the shop and took a walk around the village.. had a coffee, and found out I was in the borough of Kent..
It was about time I headed back, stopping off at the shop to pick up the goods on the way, “I’m sure we will see you again” said the shopkeeper…. I smiled and went on my way…
